Before Star Wars, there was Bond. James Bond. It is a film franchise that has inspired everyone in in the industry from Steven Spielberg to Christopher Nolan to Rian Johnson. Eight actors have (unofficially) played the character over its almost sixty years in existence. And there is another one coming out this April. So what better time for the Binge Movie Aftertaste to gear up and cover a franchise that has been requested for years. Myself, Adam, and Matt are going to fire through a gun barrel the entire 26 film franchise, cultivating in a review of Cary Fukunaga's No Time To Die, which is being heralded as Daniel Craig's final bow as the character. Normally I spend this space giving bullshit behind the scenes stories in preparation for the movie review you are about to hear. But given this movie has been delayed so many times, and we have waited so long to finally review it, how about we waste zero time in getting things going? Enjoy! Play Episode Listen Later Oct 8, 2021 83:29

Nowadays horror remakes are a dime a dozen. But if you were to ask any contemporary horror fan what their favorite remake of all time is, chances are they'll say John Carpenter's 1982 remake of The Thing From Another World. Or as he called it, The Thing. But what was it about that first film which made Carpenter want to tackle it at the pinnacle of his career? And what about the 2011 Mary Elizabeth Winstead starring attempt to reboot (retell, sequelize) it? Join myself, Matt, and the returning Mik Duffy as we attempt to answer these questions. After John Carpenter's 1982 version of The Thing came and went with a whimper, there were zero plans to bring the nihilistic vision back for another go around. But something happened once Thing killer E.T. exited theaters and the downslide of Carpenter's career started. The Thing was given more looks, and before pundits knew it, the movie was one of cable tv's most watched films. It started appearing on horror lists year after year. And, unbelievably, it got a damn video game! So obviously The Thing was primed with popularity. Cut to 2011. No Carpenter. No Russell. Yet, it girl at the time Mary Elizabeth Winstead was cast in a role clearly designed to be different, yet Ripley-esque. How did she do, and is this, like its 1982 predecessor, a movie that was lambasted at the time only to deserve a second look? Listen in as Matt, myself, and Mik conclude our look at The Thing franchise!                The Thing (2011) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10)   CLICK ABOVE TO LISTEN NOW! Subscribe to Binge Cast on iTunes

Director John Carpenter was in a spot of power in 1982. His first horror film Halloween had already become a bonafide hit, and while The Fog didn't set the box office afire, it gained him even more respect within horror circles. Then, when fellow horror savant Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) was taken off a project that would have brought Howard Hawks' vision to terrifying life in the 80s, Carpenter was more than happy to take the reigns of The Thing from his hero Hawks' hands. But a low box office take would mean that Carpenter's career cold be in trouble. So how'd he do, and what do we think all these years later? Is its eventual popularity -starting on the home video market- something well deserved? Or were critics like Siskel & Ebert right in denouncing The Thing as trash that shouldn't be picked up again? Join myself, Mik, and Matt as we look at the film that helped bring one career down a notch, while Carpenter's stumbled. Which one was well deserved, and which one was just right? There have been many filmmakers covered on the Binge Movie Aftertaste. But one which has been left out in the cold is Howard Hawks. Often called one of the greatest storytellers of all time, Hawks had done everything from the original Scarface to Red River. But in 1951, Hawks took it upon himself to enter the realm of science fiction by adapting the story Who Goes There by John A Stewart. But while the directing credit lies with Christian Nyby, ther are people who say it was actually Hawks who directed the film. So what is the real story? And what is it about this movie which has everyone from Ridley Scott to Quentin Tarantino citing it as a major influence on their careers? Listen in as we discuss that very, uhhhh, thing. For a long time now, Matt and I have been wanting to do one massive retrospective that would seem to keep building and building to an unknown number. For awhile, it was looking like Marvel was going to be that series. But after Jack and company did their three hour show on it a couple years ago, that idea went out the door. So what could we do that would could take the place of what we originally had in mind? Enter the works of Stephen King. Often called a master of horror, sometimes called a trashy populist, there is no question that King has transcended horror, and made his own brand of fiction not only popular, but the most massively successful empire of published work of all time. But in order to review the entire run of King's film adaptations, we must first look at the very first published novel of King's career, and the films it inspired. Stephen King may not have been in the stratosphere in 2013, but bullying was. Which is the angle that director Kimberly Pearce (Boys Don't Cry) takes while adapting this story that has been adapted two times already, with a 1999 sequel in tow as well. So how did this DePalma alum do in once again telling this story, and how does Chloe Grace Moretz do in filling the prom dress most famously worn by Sissy Spacek in the 1976 original? Listen below to find out. Join us next week as myself, Matt, and the returning Mik Duffy begin our look at the three iterations of The Thing with a review of 1951's The Thing From Another World. Yes folks. The long awaited Lord of the Rings Retrospective from Binge Media is upon us. However, before horror director Peter Jackson embarked on a journey through J.R.R. Tolkien's world of Middle Earth, that journey was taken by Arthur Rankin Jr and Jules Bass, with a little Ralph Bakshi thrown in for good measure. But how did it all come about? And why did Bakshi become such a grumpy bastard during the entire process? Join Matt, Adam, and myself as we start our look at Middle Earth with these three seminal 70s and 80s animated features. After Ralph Bakshi appeared with his feature The Lord of the Rings, it looked like Rankin/Bass wouldn't be able to finish their foray into Middle Earth. But little did Bakshi know that's exactly what they were looking to do, and a year later came The Return of the King, a movie that came with it an INSANE script, and even a little litigation. How did it stack up in a cinematic universe that was already out of control? Join Matt, Adam, and myself as we continue our dive into the war over the one ring to rule them all! Join Matt, Adam, and myself as we start our look at Middle Earth with these three seminal 70s and 80s cartoons. While the three of us liked 1977's The Hobbit well enough, there was one person who wanted to one up it. Ralph Bakshi, the man behind the X-rated cartoon Fritz The Cat, was doing everything from rewriting a one film script trying to change its narrative to visiting the Tolkien estate getting the blessings from the daughter of J.R.R. Tolkien to do the material well. The film did well. But Bakshi wasn't satisfied. Why is that, and how do we feel about the movie? Join myself, Matt, and Adam as we dissect the one movie in this leg of the retrospective that is not done by Rankin/Bass. Could the different flavor actually improve the dish that is known as Middle Earth? The Lord of the Rings (1978) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10) CLICK ABOVE TO LISTEN NOW! Subscribe to Binge Cast on iTunes

The year Garrett was born. Oh, and the year that Rankin/Bass, the production team behind Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer was broadcast in May and began the screen adventures of Bilbo Baggins and company. But how did it happen? And is this a criminally forgotten piece of Middle Earth media, or a bland cartoon that was done so much better by Jackson and company years later? Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2021 120:37

Manoj Nelliyattu, "M. Night" Shyamalan has had one of Hollywood's most interesting stories that could well have come from one of his scripts. After two independent movies which amounted to little success, Shyamalan set the world afire with 1999's The Sixth Sense, which took critics off guard, gathering six Academy Award nominations and rolling to an almost $700 million box office take, making it the most successful horror film all the way until 2017, when It finally knocked it off. But after a financial and critical success such as that, where do you go from there? Join myself, Matt, and the returning Michael Guarnieri as we take the journey to answering that question, which we begin with The Sixth Sense and will eventually lead to Shyamalan's new film Old, scheduled for release this July. It's finally here. After seven months of build up, Old, the cultivation of the Binge Movie Aftertaste M Night Shyamalan Retrospective, has hit theaters. But it almost didn't. After reading the graphic novel Sand Castle, which was given to him by his daughter, Shyamalan saw a story both in the book and out of it that he wanted to tell. But road blocks, which came in the form of everything from Covid to hurricanes, were in his way. But M Night persevered. And the question is, is the result of all that work made by the M Night who had an ego the size of the ocean in this movie? Or is this humbled M Night, a man who is still trying to prove himself after being beaten down by both audiences and critics alike? And how much will Matt hate it? After all, we know what resulted the last time M Night adapted someone else's work. Listen below as our Old review is finally here. And be sure to keep listening to the end as we reveal some things that are coming up on this show later on in the year (yes that was a hint). Old (2021) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10) CLICK ABOVE TO LISTEN NOW! With Split being a massive success, our buddy M Night decided it was finally time to close out the trilogy he had been drawing the foundations of for almost two decades. Armed with a 'best of' the M Night Eastrail 777 Trilogy' cast at his disposal (as well as the eager to work with M Night Sarah Paulson) Shyamalan set forth on ending the journey these characters had taken to finally meet. But with two successes behind him, would this once again be a humbled M Night? Or will the ego driven monster behind The Last Airbender and The Happening once again rear his ugly head like The Beast does in this film? Join myself, Matt, and Mike as we once again dive into the mind of M Night Shyamalan with this review of Glass. And be sure to stay till the end, as we take one final set of predictions of what we are going to expect once we step forth into the theater (yay!) and finally get to see Old, which will be our very next review! After The Visit proved to be a success, it would seem M Night Shyamalan was once again in charge and control of his career. But surprisingly, that wasn't the case. In order to do this pseudo sequel to Unbreakable, Shyamalan had to put up $9 million of his own money, as well as go to Disney himself to get the rights. The result is the James McAvoy and Ana-Taylor Joy starring Split. The gamble paid off, as it proved to be among his most critically and commercially successful film of his career. After once again failing to set the box office on fire, even with one of the biggest box office draws in the world (Will Smith) at his side with After Earth, M Night Shyamalan was once again at a career crossroads. But just when it seemed every studio wasn't willing to take a chance on another Shyamalan project, enter producer Jason Blum. After having just built his studio using a found footage franchise by the name of Paranormal Activity, it would seem fitting that Blum would bring in Shyamalan to do a movie similar in type. But how would Shyamalan do with yet another genre he wasn't proven in? And would The Visit help him once again enter his long abandoned stratosphere of both critical and audience respectability? Listen in as Matt and I bring Michael Guarnieri back to re-enter the cinematic world of M Night Shyamalan, and Guarnieri once again watches a Shyamalan film for the very first time.
