An exhibition at The Met investigates industrial slavery in the American South and the artistic work of African American potters. The show features approximately 50 ceramic objects from Old Edgefield District, South Carolina, a center of stoneware production in the decades before the Civil War. Curators Adrienne Spinozzi, Ethan Lasser and Jason Young join us to discuss the show, Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina which is on display through Sunday, Feb. 5.

Brian Sheffey has expertise in Genetic Genealogy, mid-Atlantic & Southern genealogical research, with an emphasis on the intersection of white, black, and Native American genealogy. He has used his research knowledge to solve cases of unknown parentage from Colonial America to the present day utilizing DNA and paper trail evidence. He has deep ancestral roots in colonial Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, as well as the early Kentucky and Tennessee territories. He combine years of experience in marketing research and academia with a passion for genealogical research - and a unique ability to solve seemingly impossible cases. His primary research interests include cases of unknown parentage, such as identifying the white progenitors of his numerous mulatto family lines; and triangulating answers to tough genealogical questions using traditional records and genetic evidence. Behind his passion for research lies the belief that genealogy is an opportunity to connect with Americans from different backgrounds to enable them to connect with each other – and make connections around the globe. This show will focus on the short but extraordinary life of Reconstruction era Senator Lawrence Cain of Edgefield, South Carolina. He was considered an honorable and virtuous man and helped shape South Carolina politics between 1865 and 1877 as one of the leaders of the Radical Republican movement. He rose above numerous obstacles to go from slave to state senator. Over 150 years ago he was at the epicenter of social injustice and racism in South Carolina and became a major leader who fought for political and civil rights. The facts of his life had been forgotten like much of African American history during Reconstruction. Now the facts and reality of his life have been rediscovered by Lawrence Cain's great great-grandson in this new book with the help of family, genealogy research, archived papers and genetic DNA results.. Kevin Cherry graduated from James Madison University in Virginia and started on a 30 year career in business development and technical sales including AT&T and 20 years at Microsoft. In 2018, he celebrated 25 years of marriage with his wife, Dianne, and left the corporate world behind. A few years ago he found out about the “family secret” and through research the facts uncovered the truth. Linda Cherry is a Documentary Filmmaker, lecturer, researcher and Ph.D. in the fields of Consciousness and Transformation, Cosmology and Women’s Spirituality. She has Master’s Degree in Religious Studies, a BS in Communications/Journalism and Theatre and is Ordained Interfaith Minister.
