Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers' is a historian whose work has shed new light on the roles that women played in American slavery. In this episode, she joins Ben and Bob to share some of the significant findings of her work, the sources she's used to learn more about enslaved people and female slaveowners, and her new project, which reorients our understanding of the British Atlantic slave trade by centering the story on the lives of both free and captive women. Dr. Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers is Associate Professor of History at the University California, Berkeley and the author of the award-winning book They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South (Yale University Press, 2019). Were Irish colonisers too? A new book reveals our forgotten dark historyIn discussions around empire and colonisation, including popular movements such as Black Lives Matter and Rhodes Must Fall, Ireland likes to think itself on the “right” side of history, as colonised victims of empire. But as Trinity College Dublin historian Prof Jane Ohlmeyer explores in her new book, Making Empire: Ireland, Imperialism, and the Early Modern World, it's not as simple as that.On the island of Monsterrat in the West Indies, for example, St Patrick's Day is a national holiday - the only country outside Ireland to mark the day officially. But the parades there are to celebrate an unsuccessful revolt by enslaved islanders against the European whites - mostly Irish - who colonised it in the 17th century. There are stark examples too of the Irish in India - and other countries too - acting more like colonisers than colonised.Irish Times reporter and historian Ronan McGreevy interviewed Ohlmeyer and talks here about a troubling aspect of Irish history.Presented by Bernice Harrison. And it sparked riots in the streets of Washington and heated battles in government. Slavery in the United States is often thought to be an institution of the American South, but western states played a part as well. In Utah, a law passed in 1852 made slavery and the slave trade legal, and this law was passed under the urging of the first territorial governor, Brigham Young. Historian Paul Reeve joins the program to discuss newly unearthed documents about Brigham Young and Utah's history.

"Hitler was a product of his time," historian Kent Gardner told us in 1975, just thirty years after the end of World War II. "Was Frank Rizzo racist, or just a product of his time?" The Philadelphia Inquirer pondered in 2017 about the city's notoriously racist former police commissioner and mayor just 26 years after his death. "Christopher Columbus, no saint, was product of his time," explained a 2013 commentary in the Staten Island Advance. We often hear this sentiment in reference to historical atrocities. Slaveowners, colonizers, genocidal tyrants, and right-wing bigots from decades or centuries past didn't know any better. They were simply responding to the time and place in which they lived — a different time, marked by different social mores, moral standards, and laws. While it's perhaps fair to cite this cliche to explain, rather than justify, awkward song lyrics or offensive language and stereotypes used in movies from decades ago. But it's an entirely different issue with respect to how we venerate and remember the past. Especially since, in the most popular cases, famous people's bad actions were roundly criticized, at the time. Long popular as a catch-all to hand-wave away the misdeeds of slaveowners, colonizers and war mongers, Increasingly educational movements on the American right––from Ron DeSantis trying to remake history education to conservative propaganda targeting kids like PragerU — this "product of its time" cliché and its close cousin "don't judge the past by the standards of today" is making a bit of comeback, if it ever went away at all. The defensive, superficially appealing cliche is a popular go-to for those who think we shouldn't criticize the supposedly sacrosanct secular deities of our past — from George Washington to Ronald Reagan. But the whole concept operates under a glaring double standard: how can we take pride in and venerate the supposedly good things Americans in history did but ignore and dismiss the bad things? How can we pick and choose our moral inheritance at will? How does the need for us to downplay slavery, colonization, and Jim Crow continue to be such a strong political force? And whose interests does this down-playing serve in 2023? On this episode, we dissect the notion that the reactionary forces of history have just been "products of their time." We'll explore the ways in which this and related concepts are not only inaccurate, but also convenient instruments of right-wing historical revisionism, and how the need to make people feel good about our civic mythology makes for bad history, and even worse politics. Our guest is historian and museum educator Erin Bartram.

Did you read the title of this episode? It's a doozy! As convoluted as “The Untold Story of the Story That I Told” is, I couldn't resist calling this newest episode that because of the WILD ride I went on making it. Years ago I made an eBook called “Rise and Resist” where I highlighted five different Black people who were alive around the time of Juneteenth. I told their stories and really wanted people to use this eBook to be able to share stories of Black resistance with children and students. I was planning on using one of those stories in today's episode as a way to illustrate how talking to kids about slavery can be complicated, but when I opened the book, I was astounded. I could not believe some of the stuff I wrote! There were things in there that I would never say today — things I would cringe about if someone else said them, but I double cringed knowing that I wrote them! So this episode is a little bit of what I had planned, but also a little bit of me correcting what I got totally wrong. I hope this episode reminds you how anti-racism is a journey. It's about growth. And the best thing we can do is keep moving forward and keep trying to grow. Sometimes we'll be in a position where our growth is evident, even if it's a little embarrassing, but it's worth it. If we're not trying to make change, speaking up and telling stories, then we might miss the opportunity to try to make things right — which is something I'm trying to do today!   Invite Jasmine to work with your school! John Cribb Reveals A Special Insight into The History of Lincoln

Two Mikes with Michael Scheuer and Col Mike

Our guest on the Two Mikes was Mr. John Cribb, a veteran author from Spartanburg, South Carolina. Mr. Cribb is the author of a new book called The Rail Splitter: A Novel. This book of historical-fiction follows the life of Abraham Lincoln from his birth until he is on the threshold of the presidency. (Mr. Cribb's last book is called Old Abe, which covers the last five years of Lincoln's life in which he served as president.)Our discussion focuses on Lincoln's truly spectacular rise in the world. As a youth, his father needed him on the farm, and as Lincoln said his education was a case of “the littles, a little here and a little there.” Mr. Cribb's notes that adding up Lincoln's total time at school tops out at about a year. Lincoln was absolutely a self-learner and not just in the basics. He taught himself Euclid's geometry, the law via Blackstone's Commentaries, and persevered through life to become a top-flight lawyer and the U.S. president. On the issue of slavery, Lincoln claimed to not remember when he wasn't opposed to it, saying “if slavery isn't wrong, nothing is wrong.” He also, however, was opposed to the virulent hate- spewing of the abolitionists; the latter, of course, were key players in pushing the republic into civil war. Indeed, their consistent hate and accusations of a “Godless South” were in large part responsible in making the southerners – the leaders and the led – believe that there was no ground for compromise with the north.Lincoln was without question what was called at the time an “Anti-slavery Man,” but he and many others believed that the sudden freeing of the slaves would badly disrupt the Union, cause an enormous economic dislocation, and inject into the population an enormous number of slaves who were largely uneducated, lacking in employable skills, and who were still detested, perhaps more by northerners than by southerners.Lincoln's aim at the beginning of his presidency was not to free the slaves, but to contain the institution in the south and so prevent its spread to the new states and territories that were sure to enter the Union, while also working to build a joint north-south strategy to eradicate slavery over time and prepare Blacks to cope with the drastic change and new responsibilities that freedom would place upon them. Mr. Cribb concludes our discussion with a fascinating discussion about Lincoln as a man who, though he was never baptized or joined a church, attended Sunday services and was a deeply spiritual human being. There is always more to be said about Mr. Lincoln, and Mr. Cribb gives us all a good and well-written deal to read and consider, as well as to, perhaps, help the reader to begin to grow, or to rekindle, a strong interest in the history of their country and in the enigmatic Mr. Lincoln. In his two books on Lincoln, Mr. Cribb has given a gift to the nation, and especially its young, that is badly needed. Slavery was a system that pervaded life in the American South, and as historian Stephanie E Jones-Rogers reveals in her book They Were Her Property, women played crucial roles in perpetuating that system. Stephanie is one of the winners of this year's Dan David prize – awarded for outstanding historical scholarship. Here she speaks to Ellie Cawthorne about how white women were directly involved in the trade and ownership of enslaved people, and often used tactics that were just as brutal as those of slave-owning men. Of all of the people enslaved in the southern United States over time, 40% of them were owned by women. For example, when she married George Washington in 1759, Martha Washington was herself the enslaver of 84 people. So why has the trading and enslaving of people been commonly perceived as a male domain? Why, in fact, were many white women so entrenched in this trade in human lives? In this episode, Don is joined by Dan David Prize Winner, Stephanie Jones Rogers. Stephanie has been exploring the testimonies of these people formerly enslaved by women to find out more about their experiences.Produced by Sophie Gee. Edited by Siobhan Dale. During the era of legal slavery in the United States, most people living in bondage enjoyed a brief respite at Christmas. Their holidays often included celebratory meals, music, and dancing, sometimes in company with their White neighbors. This seasonal liberty also generated great anxiety, however: Slaveowners dreaded Yuletide acts of resistance against their authority, while enslaved people feared violent rebukes of their festive joy. Conversations about the history of Christmas in the South benefit from an honest appraisal of the holiday's troubled past.

John Jay was a giant in the Founding Fathers generation. He was a diplomat, Supreme Court justice, coauthor of the Federalist Papers, and key negotiator at the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American Revolutionary War. His children and grandchildren were also key players in the Early American Republic. They pushed changes in public opinion about slavery, moving the Overtone window on slavery from support to begrudging acceptance to calls for abolition. The changes played out over the generations in the family. Jay's Huguenot grandfather, Augustus Jay, arrived in New York in the 1680s, thought the family's ownership of enslaved people was a marker of their “social ascendancy.” Jay himself owned slaves and was largely silent on the issue while pushing for the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. But his involvement in foreign affairs fostered his abolitionist leanings, leading him to become the first president of a pioneering antislavery society. He enacted a gradual emancipation law as governor of New York in the 1790s. Today's guest is David Gellman, author of Liberty's Chain: Slavery, Abolition, and the Jay Family of New York. He shows how American values were transmitted and transformed from the colonial and revolutionary eras to the Civil War, Reconstruction, and beyond through an extremely important family. In the 1830s and '40s, Jay's son William Jay and grandson John Jay II were radical abolitionists that called for slavery's immediate end. The scorn of their elite peers—and racist mobs—did not deter their commitment to end southern slavery and to combat northern injustice. Across the generations, even as prominent Jays decried human servitude, enslaved people and formerly enslaved people served in Jay households. They lived difficult, often isolated, lives that tested their courage and the Jay family's principles. One such servant fell ill and died after she was jailed for running away from John Jay's household in FranceThe Jays, as well as those who served them, show the challenges of obtaining and holding onto liberty. This family's story helps us to grapple with what we mean by patriotism, conservatism, and radicalism.
