Tom Lorenz from Sensi joins the podcast to talk about the launch of the Sensi Touch 2 thermostat. The Sensi Touch 2 smart thermostat is compatible with room sensors, which makes it an efficient and effective thermostat. Smart thermostats are becoming more common in homes, especially as we focus on HVAC efficiency. Designers are aiming to make smart thermostats user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, easy to install, and driven by data (via sensors). Installation is easy for contractors, as it relies on push terminals and cleanly covers up the previous thermostat's installation site. The Sensi Touch 2 requires a common wire, but it has easy-to-use push terminals that allow wires to click into place. It also has dedicated accessory terminals for add-on equipment like dehumidifiers. You can also pair the Sensi Touch 2 with its respective app to program the thermostat. Smart maintenance automatically alerts homeowners about poor performance or efficiency. These sorts of alerts can offer peace of mind for the homeowner. The room sensors allow the Sensi Touch 2 to manage home comfort by collecting data from several locations of the house; you can sync up to 15 room sensors to the Sensi Touch 2 thermostat. As with other Sensi thermostats, the Sensi Touch 2 has contractor branding capabilities. You can get your company name and number programmed into the main display so that the customers know who to call whenever they need something. You can learn more at procontractorbranding.com. Tom and Bryan also discuss: History of Emerson, White-Rodgers, and Sensi controls Personal data and privacy concerns with smart technology Smart thermostat design and aesthetics Energy Star certification Sensi Lite (coming soon) Warranty information Learn more about the Sensi Touch 2 at https://hvacrschool.com/sensitouch2. Joining host Rob Grimes this week is Eddie Shapiro, a home technology integrator and expert – who is on the board of the Association – CEDIA - Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association. Eddie shares with us the trends in the luxury home marketplace that also can play a role in what is available and coming for the commercial foodservice and hospitality markets. The luxury home market has seen a shift in consumers who desire high quality technology in their home, such as intelligent lighting fixtures, audio-visual, connected bathrooms and kitchens, security and surveillance, and energy management. All these technologies come together in a Human-Centric approach, incorporating AI and requiring a deep understanding of networks, data security and integration to pull it all together. Whether bought from Home Depot, Amazon, or specialized professional grade equipment, the fusion of home and tech cannot be denied. In establishing the connection between technology and the home, Eddie says that collaboration between vendors is essential. “The integrator of the AV technology company on a project, needs to collaborate with the builder, plumber and electrician as it is available everywhere. It's a better project for everybody when that happens.” Moving forward, powering the numerous technologies that run at home is a focal point for those who work in the space, especially ensuring the integration of clean energy to do so. Sound familiar?Listen to this episode of Accelerate to consider the learnings at home that can be applied to your operations and can be applied to your home as well!

“When you take weird risks and opportunities, weird shit presents itself,” says Shawn Kolodny, whose large-scale installations are strange in all the right ways. Using polished steel as his primary medium, the Miami artist is known for his “balls,” reflective sculptures that exist somewhere between the realms of art, science, and magic. On this week's podcast episode, host and NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with Shawn to discuss the artist's winding journey from business to industrial design to fine art. With an MBA under his belt, Shawn approaches his fine art career with an entrepreneur's mindset, explaining that he sees himself as the CEO of his own small venture. “I always look at the artist as an entrepreneur,” he tells Scott. “You're basically a small business where [you're] in charge of marketing, [you're] in charge of social outreach, [you're] in charge of inventory, [you're] in charge of general finances. Oh, by the way, [you're] also creating the stuff.”Realizing that many creatives lack basic business skills, Shawn created Ballsy, a podcast that investigates the habits and growth hacks of profitable artists. As the host, Shawn interviews financially successful artists to find out how they “got the balls” to sell their work and make art their career. “I look at every artist as a small business,” he says. “Whether that means [they're in the] Gagosian or whether that means they're on Etsy, every artist is a small business.” Tuning in, you'll learn more about Shawn's thought-provoking work and his nonlinear path into the art world. Shawn and Scott talk about the inherent value of constraints, the difference between a job, a career, and a calling, and how artists can get out of their own way by “falling forward.” Find out how you can grow the balls to sell your work by hitting the play button on our episode with Shawn Kolodny below. In Today's Podcast EpisodeShawn Kolodny discusses…How he became known for his “balls”The essential role of the sphere in his installation workA technical overview of his creative process and materialsThe evolving iterations of his art practice over the yearsHis unique journey into the arts and how he learned to “problem-solve with purpose”Tips for structuring your workflow and scheduling your responsibilitiesThe power of reinventing yourself while still making money from what you're known forWhy branding and audience are inherent parts of an artist's businessThe myth of “overnight success” and promoting the value of the hard slogFor more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/shawn-kolodny

Episode No. 594 features curators Stephanie Mayer Heydt and Isabel Casso. With Audrey Lewis, Heydt is the co-curator of "Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature," a survey of the American modernist's nature-based artworks at Atlanta's High Museum of Art. While Stella is best known today for his futurism-informed studies of urbanity, most especially for his paintings of the Brooklyn Bridge, Lewis and Heydt's exhibition reveals him to be every bit as much as interested in re-making America's century-long Emersonian landscape and nature traditions as his Precisionist colleagues were. The exhibition features over 100 paintings and works on paper. It's on view through May 21. A fine catalogue was published by the High Museum of Art and DelMonico Books. Amazon and Indiebound offer it for about $55. With Kate Green, Casso is the curator of "Celia Álvarez Muñoz: Breaking the Binding," the artist's first retrospective, at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. The exhibition features over 40 of Muñoz's large-scale installations, book projects, and shows how Muñoz built a witty, often funny style built from conceptualist puns even as she styled herself as an "artivist" who engaged issues informed by her experiences living along the US-Mexico borderlands. It's on view at MCASD's La Jolla location through August 13. A catalogue is forthcoming.

Last Thursday I was thrilled to speak with Idris Murphy, leading contemporary artist and a previous podcast guest, in front of a live audience at the S.H.Ervin Gallery in Sydney. It's where the survey exhibition of his work, 'Idris Murphy: Backblocks' is now showing and continues until 26 March 2023. Curated by Terence Maloon, it features breathtaking work predominantly from the last two decades. Paintings which shimmer, glow, and transport the viewer. Idris talked with me about his career including the stories behind several works, the influence indigenous culture has had on his approach and how he works in the studio. Although this exhibition is impressive in its quality and depth, this isn't the first survey show of Idris's work. The exhibition ‘I and Thou' in 2009/2010 had highlighted the preceding 30 years of work. He has exhibited in over 40 solo shows over the years with work in major public collections including the National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of NSW. Thanks to everyone who came along! I also filmed our conversation and will be uploading an edited version of this chat to the TWP YouTube channel in the coming months. Idris is represented by King Street Gallery in Sydney. As Europe commits to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, one hurdle will be the energy emissions caused by buildings' operations. What investment opportunities might come from energy renovation? European Building and Construction Equity Analyst Ceder Ekblom and European Property Analyst Sebastian Isola discuss. ----- Transcript -----Cedar Ekblom: Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Cedar Ekblom, Equity Analyst covering European Building and Construction for Morgan Stanley research. Sebastian Isola: And I'm Sebastian Isola from the European Property Team. Cedar Ekblom: On this special episode of Thoughts on the Market, we'll discuss Europe's commitment to building energy efficiency. Cedar Ekblom: Sebastian when I talk to investors and talk about energy emissions, most people immediately think of cars and transportation. But according to the International Energy Agency, in 2021 the operation of buildings accounted for 30% of global final energy consumption and 27% of total energy sector emissions. That's a huge number. A lot of people don't realize that. So it's clear that decarbonizing building stock is essential to achieving a net zero by 2050 scenario. Sebastian, we recently wrote about this and with this big goal in mind, can you give us an overview of where Europe is right now and what the biggest opportunities are that you see? Sebastian Isola: I think to start, Europe's building stock is old and inefficient. More than 40% was built before 1970 when the first energy efficiency standards were introduced, and we're currently renovating just 1% of building stock a year. The European Commission thinks that this needs to at least double to meet its 2030 target for a 55% cut in emissions. If we successfully lift innovation spend, there is a big opportunity for makers of solar, heating and ventilation equipment, building automation, energy efficient lighting, and any product linked to the building envelope from insulation to roofing and windows. Cedar Ekblom: So it sounds like there's great opportunity here, but investors often push back with the argument that energy renovation is a 'hope' rather than a reality. What are your views on the economics of investment? Sebastian Isola: I think firstly, I'd say that our alphawise survey gives us a proprietary insight into what's really happening on the ground. It confirms renovation spend is on the rise, there was a 10% increase in the number of people that renovated their homes to save energy in 2022 versus 2021. Secondly, for commercial property landlords, the economics of investment is clear. Green buildings are attracting higher rents, and in some markets, office buildings with sustainability ratings are being awarded materially higher valuations, sometimes more than a 20% premium. And Cedar, what are the key renovation categories and what is the driving motivation behind them? Cedar Ekblom: Well, if you talk to anyone in the industry, they'll tell you that fabric first is where we need to start. So what does that actually mean? We have to look at improving the insulation of the walls, the roofs, and looking at new windows and doors. And the reason why we need to prioritize this is ultimately space heating accounts for about two thirds of total energy consumption. The good thing is that our survey told us that in the nonresidential market, these types of investments are the ones being prioritized. Installation is expected to be one of the key renovation categories for 2023. Building managers told us that they plan to boost spend on installation by 8%. After upgrading the building envelope, you need to think about tackling HVAC equipment and rolling out building automation. And finally solar continues to rank as the most attractive for residential energy renovation upgrades. In terms of the motivations, 59% of consumers and building managers say that lowering energy costs was the biggest driver for investment. I think that ultimately makes sense when we think about the landscape of the energy market in Europe over the last 12 months with the big increases in gas and electricity prices. Sebastian Isola: And with that in mind Cedar, what's your near-term and longer term outlook for renovation spend? Cedar Ekblom: Well, look, the runway for investment is huge. The European Commission estimates that an additional €275 billion of investment in building energy efficiency is required annually to 2030. And that's only an interim goal. If we really want to reach a 2050 net zero ambition, the optionality for investment means that we could be looking at more than €5.9 trillion of spend. If we deliver that total construction spend in real terms would run at 3% annually. That's a big increase from the less than 1% average growth over the last 10 years. Now, Sebastian, we've obviously spoken about the potential for fantastic investment, but there's obviously some big barriers around actually driving this uplift. How is the region trying to tackle these types of hurdles? Sebastian Isola: I think the biggest barriers are funding and skills and there's a 'carrot and stick' approach to funding. Government subsidies are coming through, although maybe slightly slower than we'd like. The good news is that private investment really is ramping up, and that's partly driven by better economics, but also new penalties which make letting inefficient buildings less profitable. In the UK, if we use that as an example, you need to achieve an EPC rating of B or higher by 2030 to be able to let your building. To put that in context, 75% of commercial properties in the UK currently don't meet that EPC standard. So there's going to be a huge scale of renovation required for commercial property in the UK to be brought up to that standard by 2030. And that really is going to drive investment in commercial property and in energy renovation. The second challenge is skills. It's not an easy problem to fix, especially when the construction industry is already challenged by a lack of skilled labor. The EU is taking an important step to address these hurdles by introducing the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. This sets a region wide energy efficiency standard and harmonizes how buildings are ranked. It was passed into law in February of this year and we think it sets the framework for a multi-decade investment runway. Cedar Ekblom: Sebastian, thanks for taking the time to talk. Sebastian Isola: Great speaking to you Cedar. Cedar Ekblom: As a reminder, if you enjoy Thoughts on the Market, please take a moment to rate and review us on the Apple Podcasts app, it helps more people find the show.
In this episode of The Bookkeepers' Podcast, Jo Wood talks to Alice Thompson from Moneypenny about how bookkeepers can benefit from having outsourced support with answering telephone calls and online chat. Alice explains what Moneypenny does and how they offer telephone answering and online chat services to businesses of all sizes. She goes on to discuss the differences between inbound and outbound calls and how having support can help bookkeepers focus on their work without interruption. They also explore the benefits of having a receptionist who is trained to understand the kinds of questions clients and prospects might have and can handle them appropriately. The amount of support can be increased or decreased depending on the bookkeeper's schedule and how much support they require. Jo and Alice also touch on the importance of not missing a call as it can damage the relationship with the client. They also discuss concerns about losing control and how businesses pay for telephone answering services. Alice goes on to explain how live chat works and how it can be installed onto a website. They also address the common misconception that only large businesses can afford to outsource support. Robert Varden Discusses the Installation Standards He's Developing with the IUPAT by Floor Focus Magazine
Episode No. 592 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Amalia Mesa-Bains and curator Michael Duncan. The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive is presenting "Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archaeology of Memory," the first retrospective of the pioneering Chicana artist. The exhibition includes nearly 60 works including fourteen of Mesa-Bains' major installations. It was curated by María Esther Fernández and Laura E. Pérez and is on view through July 23. The outstanding catalogue was published by the Berkeley Art Museum in association with University of California Press. Amazon and Indiebound offer it for about $50. Across a half-century, Mesa-Bains has foregrounded Chicana forms such as altares (home altars), ofrendas (offerings to the dead), descansos (roadside resting places), and capillas (home yard shrines) into contemporary art. Her work often spotlights domestic spaces and the construction of landscape in ways that highlight colonial erasure. Among the museums which have presented solo exhibitions of Mesa-Bains' work are the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Williams College Museum of Art, the Fowler Museum at UCLA, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. As promised on the program: Sandy Rodriguez on Episode No. 532. On the second segment, curator Michael Duncan discusses "Another World: The Transcendental Painting Group, 1938-45," which is at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through June 19. The exhibition presents a group of mostly northern New Mexico-based artists, including Raymond Jonson and Agnes Pelton, who built a spiritually-informed abstraction with a painterly language that included symbols and images drawn from the collective unconscious. The show's catalogue was published by the Crocker Art Museum and DelMonico Books. Amazon and Indiebound offer it for about $60.

Episode No. 591 features artists Kahlil Robert Irving and Rogelio Báez Vega. Kahlil Robert Irving is included in "I'll Be Your Mirror: Art and the Digital Screen" at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Across more than 25,000 square feet, the exhibition examines the screen's vast impact on art from 1969 to the present. It was curated by Alison Hearst and remains on view through April 30. Irving will deliver a lecture at MAMFW on March 7 at 6 pm. Walker Art Center in Minneapolis has just opened "Kahlil Robert Irving: Archaeology of the Present", a presentation of new Irving sculptures, video, and found objects. Irving has situated his sculptures and other items within a large plywood platform, resembling a stage. Viewers can move onto the structure to encounter both artworks and manufactured objects alike. The show, which was curated by William Hernández Luege, will be on view through January 21, 2024. Irving's assemblages of images and replicas of every day objects challenge constructions of Western identity and culture. His ceramic sculptures incorporate neglected objects that represent a historical moment, as do his room-sized, image-driven installations. Irving has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis; he's been featured in group exhibitions at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, MASS MoCA in North Adams, Mass., the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and more. Rogelio Báez Vega is included in "no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria" at the Whitney. The exhibition, organized to coincide with the fifth anniversary of Maria, explores how artists have responded to the years since that event. It includes 15 artists from Puerto Rico and the diaspora. It was curated by Marcela Guerrero with Angelica Arbelaez, and will be on view through April 23. Báez Vega's paintings often portray modernist buildings dating from Puerto Rico's post-war boom. While his pictures sometimes show the island's rich vegetation overtaking physical structures, they imply both a dystopian future and nature's promise. Today's guest is Sam D'Amico, Founder and CEO at Impulse. Impulse is helping to electrify homes with sleek-looking all-electric appliances, starting with an induction cooktop.Regardless of whether or not you pay close attention to the climate space, you've probably seen some commentary in the last few weeks about gas stoves. The gas stovetop has become one of the latest culture war topics in American political discourse. Recent remarks from an official with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission about health risks associated with gas stoves in the home have prompted a wave of conservative voices to speak out in support of gas stoves, with one prominent House Republican tweeting a picture of a lit gas stovetop and the caption QUOTE "you'll have to pry it from my COLD DEAD HANDS!"Sam and Cody have a great conversation about the news from the last few weeks, the emissions profile of gas stoves, recent data on health risks associated with gas stoves in the home, the history of how gas stoves came into homes in the first place, some of the city and state level regulation that has recently been enacted around gas hookups in new construction, and then all about induction stoves and what Impulse is building. Since this topic is likely to cross over and come up in conversation with folks you might not expect, we hope you find it informative and helpful. In this episode, we cover: [3:38] The culture war around gas stoves [5:25] Growth of gas usage in homes [9:57] Emissions and human health concerns of using gas stoves[17:57] Regulations around gas hookups[22:27] Utility incentives and influencer campaigns for gas appliances [27:11] Legacy electric stove tops [31:14] An overview of induction stoves [5:45] Installation process for induction stoves [40:04] Impulse's suite of appliances[45:30] Sam's background and how he transitioned to working on appliances[47:55] Future plans for Impulse [50:49] Challenges and changes needed to help people understand induction stoves Get connected: Cody Simms Twitter / LinkedInSam D'Amico / ImpulseMCJ Podcast / Collective*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on January 19, 2023
I enthusiastically encourage you to start the journey—now—of a single habit that will set you up for 2023 becoming your most healthy, productive and joyful year yet.Willpower scientists call this concept “a keystone habit”. The one habit that raises all habits.Maybe yours will be… … committing to exercising for an hour every morning. …or dedicating yourself to studying your craft for an hour each night.…or taking a digital sabbath, free of technology one day a week. …or walking 15,000 steps every day. …or cleaning up your language so there's zero victimspeak and total leader talk. …or having a family meal without phones three times a week. I'm not sure what your “one best habit” will be yet please do remember the idea I've been teaching for over 25 years: a 1% improvement every day leads to a 30% improvement within a month and a 365% improvement in a year.Yes: small daily seemingly insignificant improvements when done consistently over time lead to stunning results.Kindly Know: If you'd like me to become your mentor to show you exactly how to do this more quickly than you've ever imagined I'd be honored to help you.
