On Wednesday, the government withdrew a mandate requiring smartphone makers to preload the Sanchar Saathi on all new devices. Several privacy advocates had raised concerns over how the app may impact users' rights. What were these concerns and what are some of the challenges that still remain. Founder of MediaNama, Nikhil Pahwa explains, in conversation with Senior Assistant Editor, Apoorva Mandhani.

Setting up Linux Mint with Custom LVM and Luks Linux Mint with Custom LVM on LUKS Overview The current Linux Mint installer doesn't support custom partitions when setting up a new machine with LUKS encryption using LVM. I prefer having a separate partition for my home directory and a backup partition for Timeshift, so that reinstalling or fixing issues won't overwrite my home directory. I found several approaches to achieve this. One method involves setting up partitions first and then using the installer to select them, but this requires extensive post-installation configuration to get boot working with the encrypted drive. I discovered this blog which explains how to repartition your drive after installation. Combined with my guide on setting up hibernation, I created this documentation to help remember how to install a fresh copy of Linux Mint with LVM and LUKS. Tested on: Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon Partition Layout For this guide, I'm working with a 1TB drive that will be split into the following logical volumes: Root - 100GB (system files and applications) Swap - 32GB (for hibernation support) Home - 700GB (user files and documents) Backup - 100GB (Timeshift snapshots) Unallocated - ~68GB (reserved for future expansion) This setup ensures that system snapshots and user data remain separate, making system recovery much easier. Installation Guide Step 1: Initial Linux Mint Installation Start the Linux Mint installation process as normal: Boot from your Linux Mint installation media Follow the installation wizard (language, keyboard layout, etc.) When you reach the Installation type screen: Select "Erase disk and install Linux Mint" Click "Advanced features" Enable both options: ✓ Use LVM with the new Linux Mint installation ✓ Encrypt the new Linux Mint installation for security Click Continue Enter a strong encryption password when prompted Complete the rest of the installation (timezone, user account, etc.) When installation finishes, do NOT click "Restart Now" - we'll repartition first Important: Do NOT reboot after installation completes. We need to repartition before the first boot. Step 2: Access Root Terminal After installation finishes, open a terminal and switch to root: sudo -i This gives you administrative privileges needed for disk operations. Step 3: Check Current Disk Layout View your current partition structure: lsblk -f This displays your filesystem layout. You should see your encrypted volume group (typically vgmint) with a large root partition consuming most of the space. Step 4: Resize Root Partition Shrink the root partition from its default size (nearly full disk) to 100GB: lvresize -L 100G --resizefs vgmint/root What this does: -L 100G sets the logical volume size to exactly 100GB --resizefs automatically resizes the filesystem to match This frees up ~900GB for our other partitions Step 5: Resize Swap Partition The default swap is usually small (a few GB). We need to increase it to 32GB for hibernation: lvresize --verbose -L +32G /dev/mapper/vgmint-swap_1 What this does: -L +32G adds 32GB to the current swap size --verbose shows detailed progress information This ensures enough swap space for RAM contents during hibernation Note: For hibernation to work, swap should be at least equal to your RAM size. Adjust accordingly. Step 6: Create Home Partition Create a new logical volume for your home directory: lvcreate -L 700G vgmint -n home What this does: -L 700G creates a 700GB logical volume vgmint is the volume group name -n home names the new volume "home" Step 7: Create Backup Partition Create a logical volume for Timeshift backups: lvcreate -L 100G vgmint -n backup What this does: Creates a dedicated 100GB space for system snapshots Keeps backups separate from user data Prevents backups from filling up your home partition Step 8: Format New Partitions Format both new partitions with the ext4 filesystem: mkfs.ext4 /dev/vgmint/backup mkfs.ext4 /dev/vgmint/home What this does: Creates ext4 filesystems on both logical volumes ext4 is the standard Linux filesystem with good performance and reliability Step 9: Mount Partitions Create mount points and mount your partitions: mkdir /mnt/{root,home} mount /dev/vgmint/root /mnt/root/ mount /dev/vgmint/home /mnt/home/ What this does: Creates temporary directories to access the filesystems Mounts root and home so we can configure them Step 10: Move Home Directory Contents Move the existing home directory contents from the root partition to the new home partition: mv /mnt/root/home/* /mnt/home/ What this does: Transfers all user files and directories from the old location to the new home partition Preserves your user account settings and any files created during installation Without this step, your home directory would be empty on first boot Step 11: Update fstab Add the home partition to the system's fstab file so it mounts automatically at boot: echo "/dev/mapper/vgmint-home /home ext4 defaults 0 2" >> /mnt/root/etc/fstab What this does: Appends a mount entry to /etc/fstab Ensures /home partition mounts automatically at startup The 0 2 values enable filesystem checks during boot Step 12: Clean Up and Prepare for Reboot Unmount the partitions and deactivate the volume group: umount /mnt/root umount /mnt/home swapoff -a lvchange -an vgmint What this does: Safely unmounts all mounted filesystems Turns off swap Deactivates the volume group to prevent conflicts Ensures everything is properly closed before reboot Step 13: Reboot Now you can safely reboot into your new system: reboot Enter your LUKS encryption password at boot, then log in normally. Verification After rebooting, verify your partition setup: lsblk -f df -h You should see: Root (/) mounted with ~100GB Home (/home) mounted with ~700GB Swap available with 32GB Backup partition ready for Timeshift configuration Setting Up Timeshift To complete your backup solution: Install Timeshift (if not already installed): sudo apt install timeshift Launch Timeshift and select RSYNC mode Choose the backup partition as your snapshot location Configure your backup schedule (daily, weekly, monthly) Create your first snapshot Additional Resources Original blog post on LVM rearrangement Setting up hibernation on Linux Mint Conclusion This setup gives you the best of both worlds: the security of full-disk encryption with LUKS, and the flexibility of custom LVM partitions. Your home directory and system backups are now isolated, making system recovery and upgrades much safer and more manageable. Automating Your Linux Mint Setup After a Fresh Install Automating Your Linux Mint Setup After a Fresh Install Setting up a fresh Linux Mint installation can be time-consuming, especially when you want to replicate your perfect development environment. This guide will show you how to automate the entire process using Ansible and configuration backups, so you can go from a fresh install to a fully configured system in minutes. Why Automate Your Setup? Whether you're setting up a new machine, recovering from a system failure, or just want to maintain consistency across multiple computers, automation offers several key benefits: Time Savings: What normally takes hours can be done in minutes Consistency: Identical setup across all your machines Documentation: Your setup becomes self-documenting Recovery: Quick recovery from system failures Reproducibility: Never forget to install that one crucial tool again Discovering Your Installed Applications Before creating your automation setup, you need to identify which applications you've manually installed since the initial OS installation. Entamoeba histolytica nearly ended Ron Blutrich's scientific career. Instead, it pushed him to rethink how we protect people in multi-family buildings, senior facilities, and dense urban centers from invisible microbiological risks in their drinking water. In this episode, he joins host Trace Blackmore to unpack what whole-building UV can (and can't) do for Legionella, biofilm, and real-world water safety. When One Bad Cup of Water Redefines a Career In the middle of his PhD in molecular genetics, Ron drank from an under-sink reverse osmosis tap at an Airbnb and contracted Entamoeba histolytica. The infection triggered more than three years of severe gastrointestinal symptoms and a 100-pound weight loss, despite being "clinically cured." That experience—and the lack of clear answers—led him to dig into how governments, utilities, and buildings actually manage microbiological risk in water. He discovered that even in urban centers, there is "a lot left to be desired" in monitoring, guidelines, and the epidemiology of waterborne disease. UV at the Point of Entry: Why Medium Pressure Matters Ron explains why he chose UV as the primary disinfection tool for CLEAR's whole-building solutions. He contrasts conventional filters (carbon, RO, media) that remove contaminants but do not kill biology with UV systems that directly target DNA and other cellular structures. He walks through the differences between low-pressure and medium-pressure UV, including temperature independence for hot water recirculation and the broader wavelength spectrum that can damage DNA, proteins, membranes, and even DNA repair enzymes. That same technology is being used for multicellular control in marine environments, ballast water, and mollusk control, and Ron argues it is uniquely suited to domestic hot water systems facing Legionella and biofilm. Legionella, Biofilm, and the Limits of "Good Enough" Drawing from CLEAR's field work, Ron describes how often Legionella shows up in single homes, condos, and new buildings, and how standard practices typically focus on remediation and short-term clearance instead of long-term prevention. He highlights the gap between ASHRAE 188's recommendations for hot water temperatures and real constraints in senior housing, where anti-scalding concerns keep tanks too cool to reliably control Legionella. He also shares stories of property managers and public agencies reluctant to test because they lack cost-effective treatment options or don't want to confront what the data might show. Scaling UV from Towers to Single Homes Ron walks through why conventional media and RO systems don't scale well to large towers—footprint, cost, and pressure loss—and how CLEAR instead installs inline UV systems at the point of entry. These systems can handle up to roughly 2,000 gallons per minute, require minimal head loss, and are designed as a single point of installation and service. From there, he explains how his team layered on monitoring and a tenant-facing dashboard so that properties can see UV dose, transmittance, and flow in real time, and service can be triggered based on performance instead of fixed schedules. He also discusses emerging opportunities in UV LEDs and next-generation media that could make fully comprehensive point-of-entry treatment feasible in more buildings. For leaders responsible for building portfolios, senior living, or high-density residential properties, this conversation offers a rigorous look at what it really takes to move from "we hope the water is fine" to a defensible, data-backed stance on microbiological safety. It turns out that Legionella is extremely susceptible to UV. Legionella can be reduced almost 6 logs with most conventional UV systems" - Ron Blutrich "So, at this point, our UV systems, it's an inline system. Intelligente Überwachungskameras erzeugen Live-Bilder in meist hoher Auflösung. Email us! There's news from the wind industry this week. And for once... the headlines tell a story of growth. Down in Hidalgo County, Texas... something worth celebrating happened this week. Terra-Gen commissioned the Monte Cristo ONE Windpower Project. Two hundred thirty-eight-point-five megawatts. Fully operational. The wind facility will generate more than 850 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity every year. Enough to power roughly 81,000 homes. And the power? Already sold. Long-term purchase agreements with two corporate customers. Construction created about 280 jobs at peak activity. More than 490,000 work hours. Not one lost-time incident. They upgraded 11 miles of state roads. Twenty-five miles of county roads. Over its lifetime... the project will deliver more than 100 million dollars to the local community. Property taxes. Landowner payments. Other economic contributions. "It is an honor," said John O'Connor, Chief Financial Officer for Terra-Gen, "to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the hundreds of men and women who made the commissioning of the Monte Cristo wind project possible." Meanwhile... halfway around the world in the Philippines... the government just awarded approvals for more than 10 gigawatts of renewable power. That's ten-point-two gigawatts, to be exact. One hundred twenty-three winning bidders. Solar. Storage. And wind. Onshore wind alone claimed two-point-five gigawatts of that capacity. Twenty-one projects. All set to deliver power by 2029. The Philippines is targeting 50 percent renewable generation by 2040. And they're not waiting around. The "overwhelming response," said the department of energy, "reflects the growing confidence of investors." Back in Europe... in Germany... Nordex is making moves. The turbine manufacturer just secured orders for 123 megawatts from Denkerwulf. Twenty-five onshore wind turbines. Installation begins in 2027. Commissioning in 2028. And Nordex shares? They're climbing. Hit a multi-year high this week. Trading at 28 euros and 2 cents. Denkerwulf'S orders for Nordex in 2025 now total nearly 144 megawatts. And last week... Mingyang signed a contract with ORE Catapult... a state-owned British test center. They're going to test main bearings for Mingyangs offshore 18.5MW turbines in the United Kingdom. "A major milestone," said Mingyang'S chief technology officer for Europe, Marc Sala. "A decisive breakthrough for our local operations." Mingyang has big plans for Britain. One-point-five billion pounds in investments. Half for factories. Half for the offshore wind supply chain. Now... over at Siemens Gamesa... things are looking up. The wind business has been struggling. Over four fiscal years... losses totaled eight-point-six billion euros. But Chief Executive Officer Christian Bruch confirmed this week... they're still targeting profitability by 2027. Break-even by 2026. Revenue for full-year 2025 rose 5 percent to ten-point-three-seven-five billion euros. Losses improved slightly. "The journey towards profitability is going to take time," said Chief Financial Officer Maria Ferraro. "But I think the team is doing a great job." They expect a positive fourth quarter in 2026. So there you have it. The wind industry is pushing forward. Two hundred thirty-eight-point-five megawatts commissioned in Texas. One hundred twenty-three projects approved in the Philippines. One hundred twenty-three megawatts ordered in Germany. Eighteen-point-five megawatt turbines heading to Britain for testing. And Siemens Gamesa ... now seeing light at the end of the tunnel. The numbers tell the story. Things are beginning to stabilize – and there's hope for the future. That's the state of the wind industry on the 17th of November 2025. Join us tomorrow for the Uptime Wind Energy podcast.
Inside the Boros Collection bunker, listening to a sound installation of distorted bells on a speaker suspended by chains, made by Eliza Douglas. The space has a fascinating past as a shelter, a prison for political prisoners, and a techno and sex club - and now it hosts a conceptual art exhibition. The sound captures both the muffled sounds of museum-goers on one side, and the passage of air and the sounds from Berlin outside on the other. Recorded in Berlin by Cities and Memory, September 2025.
A remarkable fog installation in the sculpture garden of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, by Fujiko Nakaya. This site-specific installation activates once per hour, and fills the garden with vaporous fog, playing with the architecture of Mies van der Rohe. Fog formations emerge from different sides of the garden, blending with the trees and permanent sculptures, before slowly dissolving into the sky. The moving fog appears at various densities, at times at a nearly tangible volume, at others as a translucent veil. And it's an interesting sonic experience too - and fascinating to be the only person there focusing on the sounds, instead of the remarkable sights. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

Every sales professional has a horror story that still makes them break out in a cold sweat years later. The deal that imploded spectacularly. The customer interaction that went sideways in ways you couldn't predict. The moment you sat in your car afterward in complete silence, questioning every decision that led you to this career. These moments feel intensely personal and isolating. But the truth is, every rep who's lasted in this profession has been there. On an episode of The Sales Gravy Podcast, Ashley Blount and I collected nightmare sales stories from our years in the automotive and telecommunications industries, plus stories from the sales community. We found 16 tales that prove no one faces this alone. Here are some of the most terrifying. Smelly Dave: The Angel of Death This sales horror story comes from the automotive industry, posted on Reddit by someone who still sounds traumatized. Dave started at the dealership after Sears closed. We found out he'd been the “Angel of Death” at several franchises—Sears, Future Shop, RadioShack. Every place he touched eventually shut down. Dave was in his early 40s, wore the same shirt with the same coffee stain on it every single day, and smelled terribly. Customers would flee after test drives, refusing to come back into the building with him. On one occasion, a customer was dry heaving. Management tried to delicately bring up the hygiene issue, but Dave wouldn't listen. One day, the manager was told to drop off a sold vehicle to a customer, and Dave drove the chase car. As they returned together, the smell in that enclosed space was so unbearable that the manager walked into the boss's office afterward and apologized for whatever he had done to deserve that punishment. The boss laughed, called Dave in, and fired him on the spot. The Bluetooth Incident That Still Haunts Ashley Ashley had been selling cars for a few months when a sweet older couple came into the dealership. The husband was retiring, probably late 60s, and they were one of those rare couples who were actually pleasant to work with. He picked out a lime green Ford Fiesta for his retirement car. They completed the test drive, finished all the paperwork, and Ashley sent the vehicle back to get ready for delivery. When delivering a new vehicle, you always get in with the customer to help them connect their phone to Bluetooth and walk them through all the features. Since it was a couple, the husband was in the driver's seat, his wife was in the front passenger seat, and Ashley was sitting in the middle of the back seat. They got his phone connected to the Bluetooth, matched the code, and turned up the volume on the car. He went to open his phone. The most explicit, obscene audio you can imagine came blasting out of the speakers. Dead silence in that vehicle for what felt like forever. Ashley wished them well, exited the car, and walked back inside, mortified. When asked how it went, she told them the story and muttered, “I don't really want to follow up. I'm not sure that's appropriate.” The Telecom Contractors Who Started a Gunfight I had door-knocked a large hair salon and built a relationship with the salon owner, who also owned the building. He helped me get in the door with all four of his tenants. Because he was switching, they all switched. I closed three to four months of quota on this one deal because of what he did for me. Installation day arrives. At 6 a.m., my phone rings. I try to sound as awake as possible with my gravelly morning voice, and the owner immediately screams, "Jeb, what the f**k?" He explains that our contractors came out the night before, got in a huge argument, waved guns at each other—he swears one of them shot at the other. Then they came back in the morning and dug a trench that cut every single internet line to the building. Every single one. No internet on the salon's busiest day, and all the other stores were out, too. I arrived at 6:45 a.m.

And Jehovah said unto Moses and unto Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month is to you the head of the months; this is the first to you in the months of the year. Speak ye unto all the assemblage of Israel, saying, In the tenth of this month they shall take to them everyone a lamb* for the house of his fathers, a lamb for the house; and if the house is too little for a lamb, then let him take he and his neighbor near unto his house in the number of the souls; everyone for the mouth of his eating shall ye count for the lamb. A lamb unblemished, a male, a son of a year shall be for you; ye shall take it from the lambs and from the she-goats;** and it shall be for you to be kept even unto the fourteenth day of this month; and the whole congregation of the assemblage of Israel shall kill it between the two evenings. Exodus 12: 1-6 * The word “lamb” here (Latin pecud-, Hebrew seh) must be understood to mean the young of both sheep and goats, as defined in verse 5, and also by Swedenborg himself in n. 8020. Thus it is either a lamb or a kid. We have no word in English that will precisely render either the Hebrew term or the Latin one. In verse however, the word “lambs,” near the end of the verse, is agnus in the Latin, and keves in the Hebrew, and thus is correctly rendered “lambs.” [Reviser].** Latin capra, Hebrew ez, a “she-goat,” the mother being taken for her little one. Both “kids” and “she-goats” signify “the innocence of the external or natural man, thus the truth and the good of innocence” (Arcana Coelestia n. 3518, subdivisions 3 and 4). [Reviser.] Arcana Coelestia 7814. Man has been so created that he can look upward, or above himself; and can also look downward, or below himself. To look above himself is to look to his neighbor, to his country, to the church, to heaven, especially to the Lord; but to look below himself is to look to the earth, to the world, and especially to himself. AC 7816. To look above oneself is to be uplifted by the Lord; for no one can look above himself, unless he is uplifted by Him who is above. But to look below himself is of man, because then he does not suffer himself to be uplifted. AC7822 THE CONTENTS. The subject treated of in this chapter in the internal sense is the liberation of those who are of the spiritual church, and the damnation of those who are in faith separate from Charity. The damnation of these latter and the liberation of the former are represented by the passover, and the states in respect to charity and faith of those who are liberated, by the things to be observed on the days of the passover. AC 7823 In the supreme sense by the passover is represented the damnation of the unfaithful and the liberation of the faithful by the Lord, when He had been glorified. The quality of the state of the faithful at that time, and also what its quality would be afterward, both in the universal and in every particular, is described in this supreme sense by the statutes of the passover. Third Round posts are short audio clips taken from Round 3 comments in the online Logopraxis Life Group meetings. The aim is to maintain focus on understanding the Text's application to the inner life while reinforcing key LP principles highlighted in the exchanges.

In this comprehensive session, Eric Kaiser walks through the critical importance of establishing proper user requirements before making equipment purchases. Drawing from real-world experiences in the HVAC industry, he demonstrates how poor upfront planning leads to costly mistakes, buyer's remorse, and multiple equipment purchases. The discussion covers everything from selecting simple tools like screwdrivers to complex HVAC system installations for residential and commercial applications. Eric begins with relatable examples that everyone can understand - like buying screwdrivers that don't do the job you need them for, leading to accumulating multiple tools over time. He then escalates to more serious scenarios, sharing a story about a company that spent significant money switching business software twice because they failed to identify a crucial missing feature upfront. This pattern of inadequate planning costs businesses and homeowners thousands of dollars and countless hours of frustration. The heart of the presentation focuses on a structured approach to equipment selection that prioritizes needs over wants. Eric introduces a step-by-step process that includes defining intended use, conducting thorough assessments, categorizing requirements as needs versus wants, and performing systematic candidate evaluation. He demonstrates this methodology using electrical meter selection, showing how 38 potential options can be narrowed down to just two viable candidates through careful analysis of features like amperage capability, True RMS measurement, and accuracy requirements. The session expands into HVAC system selection, where the stakes are much higher. Participants share valuable insights about customer expectations, from wanting to know when quiet systems are running (leading to flag solutions on registers) to dealing with customers who expect their new heat pump to feel as warm as their old poorly-designed system. Eric emphasizes that understanding customer expectations often differs from understanding their stated wants, requiring skilled questioning to uncover the real requirements for comfort, noise levels, and operational preferences. Key Topics Covered The Cost of Poor Planning: Real examples of expensive mistakes from inadequate user requirements, including business software failures and HVAC mismatches Structured Selection Process: Step-by-step methodology for equipment selection from initial use definition through final verification and purchase Needs vs. Wants Prioritization: Framework for distinguishing between essential requirements and desirable features to avoid decision paralysis Electrical Meter Selection: Detailed walkthrough showing how to narrow 38 options to 2 viable candidates using systematic evaluation criteria HVAC System Selection Complexities: Load calculations, customer expectation management, and the importance of understanding actual usage patterns Customer Psychology and Expectations: Understanding why customers may want noise from systems, visual confirmation of operation, and familiar operational feel Commercial Equipment Considerations: Rooftop unit replacement challenges, curb adapters, crane access, and the complexity of retrofit installations Installation and Commissioning: The critical role of proper system setup, customer training, and setting realistic expectations for new equipment operation Risk Assessment in Selection: How complexity and potential failure costs should determine the formality and thoroughness of your selection process Data Collection for Future Decisions: The value of documenting system performance during routine maintenance to inform future replacement decisions Hidden Costs and Considerations: Factors like electrical requirements, ductwork compatibility, equipment accessibility, and service support that impact long-term ownership costs Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast?
