(Hunter Morrison / KRBD) Wildlife across southern Southeast Alaska is emerging from wintertime hibernation, but in Metlakatla on Annette Island, animals are not the only things waking up. Canoes are hitting the water again, marking this year's start of a Tsimshian tradition that is tied to the village's history. KRBD's Hunter Morrison tagged along for a recent canoe journey, and has this story. About a dozen people are holding cedar boughs in a driveway on the outskirts of town. Seated atop a nearby trailer is a long, white canoe. David Nelson grabs his drum and begins singing. As the drumbeats echo through the subdivision, the mixed-aged crowd cleanses and awakens the vessel by brushing the cedar along its sides. The song's lyrics honor the canoe and welcome its paddlers. It has not been performed in three years. “We believe they’re like a living, breathing thing, so we treat it as such. We say ‘hello' to it, and when we put it away, we tell you ‘it was good to be you,' and we thank it for doing everything.” The ceremony marks the start of the canoe's spring and summertime journey. The 40-foot long Nahaaygm Lagyigyedm (Spirit of Our Ancestors) has navigated Metlakatla's waters and traveled to neighboring islands since 2013. Johon Atkinson, president of the nonprofit Liwaayda, says the organization's goal is to share Tsimshian culture and bring Metlakatla back to its canoeing roots, which dates back over 130 years. “So the whole reason why we got this canoe was to get our people in Metlakatla out on water.” While today's canoes are often used to educate people about Tsimshian culture, Atkinson says they are still important to traditional practices. Later this month, the Spirit of Our Ancestors will be used in Metlakatla to harvest seaweed from neighboring islands. “It’s that feeling of we’re going to be on the ocean, on the highways of our ancestors. And just that feeling is so comforting. I feel complete when it is canoe season.” Minutes after its blessing, the canoe is towed to a boat launch, from which they will paddle to nearby One Tree Island. Johon Atkinson, right, and family members cleanse the Spirit of Our Ancestors with cedar boughs before the canoe's first journey of the season. (Photo: Hunter Morrison / KRBD) Atkinson, who is joined by his son, niece, and nephew, hopes fun opportunities like these can help keep Tsimshian traditions alive for the next generation. “Having them experience this now is something that many of us adults have not experienced at their age. So the fact that they are here, learning and leading – there’s just no words on how amazing that is.” Atkinson says folks from all over the country visit Metlakatla each summer to experience the village's canoe journeys firsthand. (Courtesy Robert Nick family) Robert Nick was a man of the Southwest Alaska tundra – and much more. He died last month at the age of 84. His memorial service was at St. Innocent Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Anchorage last week where, as Rhonda McBride from our flagship station KNBA tells us, he was remembered for a lifetime of public service. Robert Nick's Russian Orthodox service was fitting for a man who loved the harmonies of the Slavonic choir. He was known to pass out recordings of his favorite hymns to friends and fellow singers. For Andrew Guy (Yup'ik), president of the Calista Native Corporation, Nick represents the end of an era. “He's part of that group that came from having no electricity, no outboard, to where we are today.” (Courtesy Robert Nick family) Nick helped bring electricity to villages throughout Southwest Alaska through his work with the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, an organization he helped found. He also ran a store in Nunapitchuk, a village near Bethel, Alaska where he grew up. Richard Jung (Yup'ik), who owned Jung's Trading Post, in the neighboring village of Napakiak, said Nick's leadership grew from the values he was raised in. “One of the things you're taught is to help people. You try to do what you can for your village and your region. And he was one of those guys that did that./ He knew that he could get things done and was one of the ones that knew he had to do it. He was just a fine person.” Robert Nick was very proud that he was the first in his family to receive a Western education and graduate from high school. That achievement became a foundation for decades of service on boards and commissions that focused on a wide range of causes: health, education, housing, economic development, job training, and protecting the Yup'ik subsistence way of life. (Courtesy Robert Nick family) His niece Karen Cooke Phillips (Yup'ik) says he was tireless. “Attending meetings, after meetings, for days and hours, and for continued years.” And yet, Phillips says, his home was filled with love, a reflection of his early life. Nick was the eldest of nine children. After his father died, he took over his father's store and helped to provide for his younger brothers and sisters – an experience Phillips says shaped his lifelong role as a father figure – not just within his family but across the region. “He has been in those arenas, leading in lots of different organizations and providing a voice for people from our region, or the lifestyle of the people of our region.” Nick had two twin passions, housing and education. He dedicated many years of his life to improving housing conditions in rural Alaska. Eventually, he became a national advocate for federal Indian housing programs and brought attention to the Third World conditions in Alaska villages. He also served on the Lower Kuskokwim School Board for two decades and became its longtime chairman. Steve O'Brien, a former school principal, remembers giving Nick a copy of Robert Rules of order to help him. “And he laughed, and he said, ‘Oh, I already have that book.' And he reached behind from the bookshelf, and he pulled down this very worn and earmarked copy of Robert's Rules with sticky pages and stuff. He was an expert about this stuff.” O'Brien says it is no surprise that Robert Nick was eventually asked to chair almost every board he served on. In 2014, Nick received an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. (Courtesy Robert Nick family) Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. In this episode of the Vault, we revisit the Italian writer Italo Calvino's James Lecture, presented at the New York Institute for the Humanities on March 30, 1983. Italo Calvino was one of the most inventive and widely read Italian authors of the twentieth century. Born in Cuba in 1923 and raised in San Remo, Italy, he began his literary career as a journalist and fiction writer after World War II, publishing his debut novel, The Path to the Nest of Spiders, in 1947. He went on to write some of the most formally original works in postwar literature, including Our Ancestors, Cosmicomics, Invisible Cities, and If on a winter's night a traveler. His work moved fluidly between realism, fantasy, and structural experimentation, earning him a reputation as one of the foremost practitioners of what would come to be called postmodern fiction. He died in 1985, in Siena, Italy. In this lecture, later published as “The Written and the Unwritten Word” in the New York Review of Books, Calvino reflects on writing, reading and what it means to live between the written world and the material world. Mothers of Magic: Perdita Finn on How to Summon Your Ancestors and Reclaim the Mothering You Never Had

Ready to feel all the feelings? Sarah and Jane sit down with author and mystic Perdita Finn on the eve of the launch of her new book, Mothers of Magic: Summoning the Wisdom of Our Ancestors — and the timing feels nothing short of divinely arranged. Perdita is also the author of Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World, and this episode picks up right where that book left off: the dead are not gone, they are available to help us.  What unfolds is one of the most resonant conversations Medium Curious has ever had. Perdita brings her gift for poetic, grounded storytelling to questions that couldn't feel more urgent: What does it mean to be un-mothered in a culture designed to make mothers fail? How do we reclaim the grandmothers who were silenced, reduced to diagnoses, cornered by circumstance? And how do we connect with them now, across the veil, when we need them most? Perdita shares the story of her grandmother Nellie — a woman she only knew as a stroke victim, but who she discovered, through diaries found after her mother's death, to be a complicated, extraordinary soul worth claiming. She talks about the forget-me-nots blooming in her yard three weeks early on book launch day, carried from England to America by her grandmother, and what it feels like to offer this book to her. The conversation moves through the lost village of mothering — how before civilization, a mother was anyone who cared, regardless of gender or biology — to the very practical question of what to do with all of it: the grief, the rage, the overwhelm, the headlines. Perdita's answer is to delegate to the dead. She opens every morning with her worries and calls on her team on the other side, from her late dentist to the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, trusting that the dead can hold what we cannot. This episode will leave you crying, laughing, and reaching for your own grandmother's hand across whatever distance separates you. Key Takeaways The dead are still available to us. Perdita opens every morning by calling on her team on the other side — ancestors, teachers, friends, even those we've lost to historical atrocity — and asks them to help carry what feels too heavy to hold alone. This isn't metaphor. It's a daily practice with real effects. Our grandmothers were more than the stories we were told about them. Many of us inherited a reduced version of who our grandmothers were — shaped by trauma, mental illness labels, silence, and the limits of the era they lived in. Their diaries, their objects, their dreams can give them back to us as full human beings. Fretting is a form of prayer. Perdita reframes worry not as weakness but as creativity at work — an act of turning something over, wearing away at a problem, spinning new possibilities into being. Our anxious minds are also our most generative ones. Before civilization, a mother was an adult who cared. Mothering wasn't defined by gender or biology. It was communal, expansive, and distributed across a whole circle of people. Reclaiming that definition is not just healing — it's resistance. We are all psychic, and we have been trained out of it. Perdita's own precognitive dreams were met with terror by her mother, and she shut them down. When we silence those gifts in children — and in ourselves — we lose our most essential line of communication with the unseen world. The goal isn't just your lifetime. Perdita encourages thinking in terms of 49 generations — roughly 1,200 years. What prayer would you want to still be praying then? What healing are you beginning now that you may not live to see complete? Quotable Moments "What we long for are the arms and the embrace of a circle of mothers — a circle of grandmothers, a circle of beings who know who we are and want us to be who we are." "If we weren't adored by a group of women who loved us in life, just know: you are adored by beings beyond measure who love you from the other side." "We need less children in the world and more mothers." "A knot, an obstacle, a problem, a rift — becomes an opportunity for magic with the dead." "If we remember we're all each other's mothers, we're going to stop clear-cutting the forest and mountaintop mining and putting each other in solitary confinement." They are currently at work on their next book together Circles Not Lines: Spiritual Community Beyond Patriarchy.  To find out more about her devotion to “ecology not theology” visit wayoftherose.org In addition to extensive study with Zen masters, priests, spirit workers, and healers, she apprenticed with the psychic Susan Saxman, with whom she wrote The Reluctant Psychic. Perdita Finn now teaches popular workshops on Getting to Know the Dead. Participants are empowered to activate the miracles in their own lives with the help of their ancestors and recover their own intuitive magic. Her book Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World is an intimate journey through her recovery of these lost ways. She speaks widely on how to collaborate with those on the other side, on the urgent necessity of a new romantic animism, and on the sobriety that emerges when we claim the long story of our souls. Her next book is Mothers of Magic: Summoning the Wisdom of Our Ancestors, to be released on May 5th, 2026. Perdita begins by talking about the idea of redefining Mothering beyond gender, something that feels so important in today's world where Mothering has been sidelined by the patriarchy. She offers some strong guidance to men about the role of Grandmothers which helps us move towards collective Mothering. So much of Perdita's work and book centers on a calling upon the dead. As such we get to hear how this connects with Mothering, how to speak with the dead, and viewing our worries or fretting as an act of prayer calling out for help from the unseen.  You can connect with all of Perdita's work at https://takebackthemagic.com/ Like, Subscribe!  Watch us on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@dancingwithwaterpodcast Find us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/dancingwithwaterpodcast Support us at Patreon https://www.patreon.com/dancingwithwater Find archive conversation from I want what SHE has https://iwantwhatshehas.org/  Learn more about Theresa and her offerings at https://www.anahatakingston.com/  Learn more about Jennifer and her offerings at https://www.cosmicmotherlove.com/

We start off by revisiting the Artemis II mission and some ideas of future space expansion.  We then move to the main topic: a recap of some of the new places we visited in Egypt, such as KV5(a "tomb" complex in the Valley of Kings) and Tell Al-Roba, a massive 200 acre site in Egypt that holds the buried remnants of a temple complex and features an absolutely enormous single-piece granite shrine. We also talk about some new obvservations regarding the floor of the "Queen's Chamber" in the Great Pyramid, as well as some interesting aspects of the Grand Gallery. We then move on to our travels in the Faiyum and out into the desert, looking for traces of paleo and neo lithic people.   You can support us through Patreon or Paypal by going to https://www.brothersoftheserpent.com/support Thank you!         Chapters 00:00 Introduction to the Podcast and Artemis Mission Discussion 03:01 Transient Lunar Phenomena and Mission Insights 05:56 Space Elevator Concepts and Material Science Challenges 09:10 The Future of Space Travel and Rocket Technology 11:59 Exploring Ancient Egypt: New Discoveries at Tell Al-Roba 14:47 Lithics Project and Archaeological Findings 18:04 Understanding Egyptian Civilization and Its Layers 20:53 The Great Pyramid and the Queen's Chamber Insights 31:36 Exploring the Great Pyramid's Intricacies 34:53 The Grand Gallery: A Marvel of Engineering 38:34 Unveiling the Secrets of the King's Chamber 39:45 Insights from the Abruhuash Descent 45:27 Investigating KV5: The Valley of the Kings 56:54 Reflections on the Sinai Peninsula Adventures 01:02:11 Exploring Ancient Civilizations and the Fertile Crescent 01:05:30 The Mysteries of Mount Sinai and Pre-Pottery Neolithic Sites 01:09:08 Navigating Bureaucracy in Egypt: A Tourist's Experience 01:12:34 Discovering Ancient Artifacts and Sites in the Desert 01:17:10 The Significance of Pre-Pottery Neolithic A in Sinai 01:20:15 Uncovering Lithics and Ancient Technologies in the Faiyum 01:26:43 Exploring the Labyrinth and Pyramid Structures 01:30:14 Geological Insights and Flood Impacts 01:32:28 Basalt Quarries and Ancient Construction 01:35:15 The Oldest Road and Transportation of Materials 01:41:34 Ancient Lake Levels and Docking Structures 01:45:51 Petrified Forests and Fossil Discoveries 01:51:00 Valley of the Whales and Extinction Events 01:52:44 The Fossilization Process and Environmental Changes 01:55:48 The Silica Cycle and Its Geological Impact 01:56:55 Discovering Ancient Creatures: The Basilisk Imprint 01:58:08 Ancient Roads and the Legacy of Our Ancestors 02:00:28 Exploring the Descent to Lake Levels 02:04:12 Disaster Mapping: Understanding Ancient Floods 02:10:37 Future Projects and Community Engagement

This episode features listener takeaways from the recent RootsTech 2026 conference. Diana discusses the overall positive impressions of the event, noting the high quality of the presentations and the unanimous message about disclosing the use of AI and double-checking its work. Nicole and Diana review several classes on AI, including transforming family history into song, understanding AI's role in archival stewardship, and mastering the basics of AI for genealogy. They share lessons on using AI to abstract information from records, create citations, and analyze research logs to identify gaps. Diana also discusses her class on using AI to clarify complex court records by translating obsolete terms and organizing chronological data. The hosts share insights on specialized research areas, methodology, and records. Diana highlights classes on DNA, including using shared-match grids to analyze and group DNA matches and a methodology to defeat the "Genealogy Gremlin" by evaluating match pedigrees and mitigating confirmation bias. They share a listener's review of Michael Lacopo's session on how to successfully approach non-responsive cousins to encourage them to share their DNA. The hosts discuss classes on research methodology, such as resolving same-name issues by building identity profiles and constructing timelines, and using genealogical analysis to solve conflicting birth dates. Diana notes that a class on probate files reveals that these records contain many rich documents beyond the will, offering clues about an ancestor's associates and lifestyle. They also share Sue Taylor's review a class on Italian records that explains the Latin grammatical forms—nominative, genitive, and accusative—found in civil and parish records. Listeners learn how to access recordings and handouts from RootsTech to apply new AI tools to their research, master advanced DNA analysis techniques, and apply genealogical proof standards to complex records and challenging research questions. This summary was generated by Google Gemini. Wisdom's Cry
No Kings The Voice of The Ancestors Cry Out a Samhain Reflection

Wisdom's Cry

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2025 27:30

The veil thins. Candles flicker in windows, pumpkins grin like little guardians of light, and the wind itself seems to carry whispers. On this night of Samhain, the air is crowded not just with ghosts and shadows, but with memory. The ancestors are near. They gather around us not as specters of fear but as companions in the long struggle for freedom. They murmur their old refrain: No Kings. It isn't only a political cry; it's a spiritual declaration. No kings over conscience. No kings over the sacred spark in each soul. No kings over the earth that belongs to no one and to everyone. And yet, empire still rides: headless, hungry, searching for a new crown to wear. The Headless Rider of EmpireEvery age has its horseman. Ours rides draped in flags and algorithms, clutching power with a grin that never reaches the eyes. Empire doesn't always look like soldiers on horseback; sometimes it's the dull hum of propaganda, the endless scroll of outrage meant to make us afraid and divided. Fear is the tyrant's favorite sacrament. It is how empire keeps us bowed. But Samhain teaches another kind of reverence, the courage to face the dark and discover that we are not alone in it. When we remember the ancestors, we remember that empire has fallen before, that courage has survived worse nights than these. As we light our candles this year, we are not warding off ghosts. We are calling them in.The Communion of the Courageous DeadTo honor the dead is to remember their unfinished prayers. Our ancestors were not perfect saints; they were human beings, flawed and luminous, stumbling toward freedom. Some resisted tyrants with sword or song. Others sowed seeds, healed wounds, or hid the persecuted in their homes. Some were themselves entangled in empire's lies and it is ours to set those wrongs right.Their presence tonight is not sentimental. It is strategic. They come to remind us that the fight for freedom is ancient and ongoing, that our bloodlines are braided with courage. Every generation must reclaim liberty from the jaws of fear. The dead lend us their memory so we can stand our ground without trembling. So when you feel the chill tonight, do not recoil. Let it steady you. It is the breath of all who refused to kneel. The Spell of FearEvery empire survives by casting the same spell: Be afraid, and obey. They conjure phantoms of scarcity and strangers, they whisper of purity and order. They tell us that power is safety and obedience is peace. But fear is a liar.Samhain breaks that spell. It invites us to laugh at death, to dance in the graveyard, to mock the old specter of control. In every carved pumpkin grinning against the dark, there is an act of rebellion. Every costume is a playful reminder that masks can liberate as much as they conceal. We can take the tyrant's favorite tools, fear and spectacle and turn them inside out. Make them ridiculous. Make them lose their power. Empire cannot stand when its priests of fear become the butt of the world's laughter. This is holy mischief. Sacred mockery. The ancestors knew it well.No Kings: The Theological HeartWhen we say No Kings, we echo both the prophets and the mystics. The Hebrew scriptures warned Israel what kings would do: take sons for war, daughters for labor, and the fruit of the land for greed. Jesus of Nazareth refused a crown and washed feet instead. To walk the Christopagan path is to remember that divinity does not enthrone it indwells. The Holy is not found in palaces but in the gathering of people who love one another enough to live free.Every tyrant dreams of being worshiped. Every mystic knows that worship belongs only to Love. The Work of Ancestral HealingTo honor our ancestors is not to whitewash them. Many of us carry lineages tangled in empire's violence colonizers and enslaved, oppressor and oppressed. Healing that wound begins with honesty. The ancestors cry out, not to defend their sins, but to urge our repair. In Hebrew mysticism this is called tikkun olam the mending of the world. Our task is not to make the past pristine but to fill its cracks with gold, like kintsugi pottery. To make beauty from brokenness. We do this through truth-telling, solidarity, and mercy. We the LivingWe are the living continuation of their courage. The blood of resistance runs in our veins. We, too, must stand in our time as they did in theirs against tyranny in every disguise: political, ecclesial, corporate, or psychological. But take heart. The ancestors are not trapped in dusty graves; they walk with us in every act of conscience, every laugh that punctures fear, every community that chooses cooperation over control. When you light your Samhain candle, whisper their names. But also whisper your own. You are part of the lineage now.Practice: The Circle of Memory and FreedomCreate an Ancestral Altar of Resistance* Gather tokens of courage. A photo of an ancestor who stood up for justice, a candle, a stone from the earth you walk on, a symbol of freedom a feather, a leaf, a key.* Name your lineage honestly. Speak aloud the gifts and wounds you inherit. If your ancestors caused harm, acknowledge it and commit to repair.* Invite them to stand beside you. Say: “Those who fought for freedom, walk with me. Those who seek to heal, guide me.”* Make a pledge. Choose one concrete act this season: volunteering, mutual aid, community defense, voting, or organizing to embody their courage in your day.* End in laughter. Remember the sacred mockery that disarms fear. Tell a story, sing, or dance. Joy is resistance.A Call to the Living CircleThe season ahead will test us. But remember: the tyrant's power is built on isolation. The medicine is community.Gather your people. Light the fires. Tell the old stories again. The witches who cursed the bombers, the marchers who faced dogs and hoses, the workers who sang on picket lines. These are your kin.Let your laughter carry through the thinning veil so the dead know their struggle was not in vain. Let your courage rise like a hymn the empire cannot drown.Because when we say No Kings, we are not only defying rulers we are proclaiming the sacred truth of creation:that Love alone is sovereign. And love, once awakened, cannot be ruled. Thanks for reading! In today's episode, delve into the root causes of anxiety through the lens of both modern science and Ayurvedic wisdom. Unlike what the common Indian society preaches, anxiety is not just “all in the mind”; it is the body's natural response to perceived threats, often triggered by imagination rather than reality. Dr. Vignesh shares how Ayurveda views anxiety as an imbalance of Vata dosha, and how misdirected creative energy can spiral into worry and fear.Through practical tools and Ayurvedic insights, you'll learn how to reframe anxiety into resilience and curiosity, cultivating clarity and balance in everyday life.Get free episode abstract: https://vigneshdevraj.comThe details of our upcoming course on healing from anxiety will be announced shortly on our Instagram page. Peace Community,On today's episode I genuinely speak about the inspiration behind the title colonized minds. In today's society there are many minds that are colonized and brainwashed due to extreme indoctrination.I talk about two activists, Yuri Kochiyama + Malcolm X, their connection and significance. Both intersected the struggles of The Japanese Indigenous peoples and The Melanated Indigenous peoples. I talk about the injustices that Yuri, her family and Japanese Indigenous descendants faced in the concentration camps in Arkansas along with Malcolm who also spoke of the injustices that Melanated Indigenous descendants too faced. The connection between Yuri, Malcolm and many others who are descendants of those who have suffered from colonization is directly in our faces. Our Ancestors left traces of their work to liberate the oppressed; Now we collectively get the opportunity to continue that work with purpose. His-story repeats and now the story sits with us in this generation specifically. How will we be remembered by our descendants in this moment? The children will have questions. Every group of indigenous people have experienced the colonial regime to ethnically cleanse and rid us of everything sacred; That's truth, power, wisdom and knowledge. No matter what; The consciousness within humanity will ONLY keep rising.Free The Entire Planet of Oppression until it's backwards. The subject tonight is Love And for tomorrow night as well, As a matter of fact I know of no better topic For us to discuss Until we all Die! - Hafiz Crisis, war, injustice, and violence have a certain logic—and social change processes working to address these challenges carry a similar, reactionary logic. How can love help us to step out of the perceived reality of “what is possible” in building peace during conflict? Turning points in conflicts and crises are often mysterious, require acts of enormous creativity, and a willingness to risk. Social change is an artistic act, mobilizing love and prophetic imagination–and it requires us to step into the mystery of the unknown that lies beyond the far too familiar landscape of violence. In this series, join Host Serena Bian in speaking with three people who bear witness to the best and worst of humanity, holding a courageous moral imagination. Working and witnessing the front lines of injustice, war, climate change, these peacebuilders, mystics, storytellers hold space for the miraculous to emerge, refusing to be bound by a perceived reality of “what is possible.” Events in the series Monday, April 29 | Deepa Patel Weds, May 29 | Aljosie Aldrich Harding Tues, June 25 | Kalyanee Mam View Kalyanee's film “Lost World” (an excerpt is featured in this podcast) at: https://emergencemagazine.org/feature/lost-world/ Kalyanee Mam Born in Battambang, Cambodia, during the Khmer Rouge regime, which claimed the lives of over 2 million people, Kalyanee and her family were displaced from both their land and their home. His work focuses on the history of human culture and our relationship with the climate, using ancient artifacts to piece together the story. Brian and Greg discuss how humans have historically adapted to climate change, the role climate has played in the rise and fall of civilizations, and the importance of understanding our past to prepare for future climate challenges.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why has climate and other big global physical things been underappreciated as historical causes?07:12: You've got a situation now where climate change is among us. We live with it every day. And every time there's a major storm, up come the media with the old climate change thing, which is all very well, but the fact of the matter is that we've lived with climate ever since we've been on this planet. The real immediacy of it has been in the last 10,000 years, particularly with the development of agriculture and herding, because then you're really getting into a situation where you've got the whole scene of climate changing rapidly.Looking at climate as a player in history09:12: We're looking at climate as a player in history, not necessarily a cause. But a major player, which it was.On the dynamics of herding and the breathing of deserts20:42: The dynamics of herding are very simple. In the final analysis, an awful lot of history, I think, is probably very simple. You get rainfall in the desert. Large, shallow lakes develop, water holes form, and a whole bit of vegetation comes up. What happens? Animals and, ultimately, humans and cattle move in. Then it dries up, and they move out. It's like lungs in and out. There's no question that there's movement of deserts, the lungs, or the breathing of the deserts.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Mortimer Wheeler Hubert LambGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at UC Santa BarbaraHis Work:Climate Chaos: Lessons on Survival from Our AncestorsThe Little Ice Age: How Climate Made History 1300-1850The Long Summer: How Climate Changed CivilizationFloods, Famines, and Emperors: El Nino and the Fate of Civilizations The Great Warming: Climate Change and the Rise and Fall of CivilizationsThe Intimate Bond: How Animals Shaped Human HistoryFishing: How the Sea Fed Civilization

Dr. Marie Mihalicz is a respected researcher, consultant, and founder of White Lightning Consulting, an organization committed to community-based healing and wellness retreats. She completed her Ph.D. at Royal Roads University, where her dissertation focused on Indigenous methods of healing and their potential for addressing the high rates of suicide and mental health issues in northern Saskatchewan communities. Her research findings have been used to influence policy change, with the aim of supporting sustainable, culturally relevant mental health services for Indigenous youth and families. Dr. Mihalicz and her team at White Lightning Consulting offer evidence-based healing and education programs that combine Western science and Indigenous healing methods. Through their collaborative community-based approach, they aim to empower Indigenous youth and families to pick up their knowledge bundles in today's world, strengthening and mobilizing community processes from the inside-out. In the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic and the complex intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous communities, Dr. Mihalicz and her team continue to work towards enhancing sustainable counseling supports and delivering effective leadership training workshops. In this 8th podcast of a nine part series, Marie Mihalicz discusses the importance of decolonizing trauma and healing the soul. She highlights how traditional ways of knowing are not recognized, and there are gaps in the mental health system that need to be addressed. Mihalicz emphasizes that trauma is passed down through blood, but so is healing, and it is essential to understand the historical links to trauma. She suggests that healing is in our DNA and that the delivery of mental health needs to change to include outdoor therapy, such as art therapy, breathwork, and hands-on ceremonies. Mihalicz believes that the biggest barriers to healing are the spiritual loss and the fact that traditional healing methods are not recognized by the current system. She emphasizes the need for protocols and boundaries around ceremonies, as well as space to sit down and talk about how we are doing. Mihalicz advocates for the use of traditional Indigenous practices in mental health treatment, such as prescribing ceremonies and mentorship through ceremony. She encourages people to learn about their history, stories, and intergenerational trauma, to talk about it and create safe spaces to heal. Ep 120 How Plant-Based Eating Can Disrupt Cultural Oppression: A Conversation with Dr. Milton Mills

Dr. Milton Mills, MD is a practicing urgent care physician in the Washington DC area, with a focus on the use of nutritional measures to reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. He is an Associate Director of Preventive Medicine and a member of the National Advisory Board for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), where he has been a major contributor to position papers presented to the United States Department of Agriculture regarding Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Dr. Mills has published several research journal articles dealing with racial bias in federal nutrition policy and has been the lead plaintiff in PCRM's class action lawsuit that asks for warning labels on milk. He is also a frequent volunteer at free medical clinics and travels widely, speaking at hospitals, churches and community centers throughout the country. Dr. Mills was featured in the documentary “What the Health” and will also appear in the upcoming film “The Silent Vegan”. He is a strong advocate for plant-based eating and addressing cultural disruption in the food system, particularly in communities of color. Through his work, Dr. Mills aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and to promote the use of sustainable, plant-based diets for both personal and planetary health. Dr. Mills discusses the impact of cultural disruption on plant-based eating and health in the BIPOC community in Nicolette's seventh PhD Podcast. Dr. Mills explains that BIPOC communities have become dumping grounds for agricultural excess, leading to food scarcity and a lack of access to nutritious food. He advocates for the use of core crops, such as the Three Sisters (corn, beans, and squash), which provide good calories and adequate nutrition while also being sustainable and renewable. Dr. Mills highlights the historical impact of Western culture on the diets of POC, including the use of commodity crops, and how it has resulted in systemic and structural racism. He argues that Western medicine operates from a disease model and must change the way it practices medicine, as band-aids will not cure diseases. Dr. Mills emphasizes the importance of decolonizing our diet, mindset, and way of relating to the world to protect the planet and ourselves. He advocates for narrative medicine to address trauma and abuse and for doctors to unlearn bad habits and become part of the solution. Find Dr. Milton Mills at:Website: www.drmiltonmillsplantbasednation.comInstagram: @MiltonMillsMDBook: Discussed on the PODCAST:The Silent Vegan Documentary - https://youtu.be/RaSK8DqZhLoDr Loxman Opreary – Midwest veg fest -They're Trying To Kill Us Documentary - www.theyretryingtokillus.comCasablanca - www.imdb.com/title/tt0034583/Physicians CommitteeDr. T Colin Campbells Centre for Nutrition StudiesDr. Dean Ornish -Dr C Esselstyn -The Gerson Therapy Learn More:Ready to launch your career as a certified Metabolic Nutrition & Detox Coach? Suzanne's upcoming YA book, Killing the Wittigo: Indigenous Culture-Based Approaches to Waking Up, Taking Action, and Doing the Work of Healing, is set to be published in June 2023. In her interview on Nicolette's Fourth PhD podcast episode, Suzanne offers insights that go beyond the conventional risk factors cited by the government and scientists for disproportionate rates of diabetes and chronic disease in BIPOC communities. She provides a nuanced perspective on the impact of colonization, control, complex PTSD, voicelessness, intergenerational trauma, brain fog, monoculture, the credentials barrier, and multinational corporations' control over food security and inputs for growing. Suzanne debunks commonly held beliefs about poverty and the "thrifty gene" and explores the opportunities for creating a better future through re-learning, knowledge-sharing, consulting with those who hold cultural and ceremonial knowledge, and taking care of marginalized people. She emphasizes the importance of sharing stories and seeing to address the challenges faced by Indigenous communities. Suzanne's extensive experience in advocacy and direct-service positions at Indigenous-led organizations, including the Native Women's Resource Centre of Toronto, the Anishinabek Nation (Health and Environment Program), the YWCA Elm Centre, and West Neighbourhood House, underscores her commitment to serving community members healing from intergenerational trauma and reclaiming culture while facing racism, poverty, homelessness, health issues, addictions, mental-health challenges, crime, and victimization. Find Suzanne Methot at:Website: www.suzannemethot.caFacebook: @SuzanneMethotAuthorLinkedIn: @SuzanneMethotYouTube: @SuzanneMethotBook: Legacy: Trauma, Story, and Indigenous Healing - https://a.co/d/enJ9v78 Discussed on the PODCAST:Book – Trauma and Recovery, Judith Lewis Herman - https://a.co/d/7GiHoVhAnishnawbe Health Toronto – www.aht.caMaslow's Hierarchy of Needs - https://simplypsychology.org/maslow.htmlTurtle Island Creation - http://bit.ly/3FSUSIZBook – The Prophecy of the Seven Fires of the Anishinaabe - https://caid.ca/SevFir013108.pdfSally Gaikezheyongai - https://vtape.org/video?vi=5664Aboriginals Healing Foundations List - Intergeneration Impacts - https://bit.ly/3FVpCZD Learn More:Ready to launch your career as a certified Metabolic Nutrition & Detox Coach? DRIFTING OF A LEAF, 2min., USA, Animation Directed by Wenpei Li If you could have another life, do you hope to become a tree? A little leaf becomes a bird flying in the world. Is it a leaf or a bird? It does not know where its root is. Maybe the root is all this world. http://wenpeili.com/ https://twitter.com/wplyeyeye https://www.instagram.com/wenpei.art/ Get to know the filmmaker: “Drifting of A Leaf” was one part of my MFA thesis project. The idea for this thesis came from Italo Calvino's book, “Our Ancestors.” There were three short stories in this book, one of which was about a tree. Since I was a kid, I hoped I could become a tree or a bird if I had another life. So, I wanted to make an animation about trees. You can sign up for the 7 day free trial at www.wildsound.ca (available on your streaming services and APPS).
