The subject tonight is Love And for tomorrow night as well, As a matter of fact I know of no better topic For us to discuss Until we all Die! - Hafiz Crisis, war, injustice, and violence have a certain logic—and social change processes working to address these challenges carry a similar, reactionary logic. How can love help us to step out of the perceived reality of “what is possible” in building peace during conflict? Turning points in conflicts and crises are often mysterious, require acts of enormous creativity, and a willingness to risk. Social change is an artistic act, mobilizing love and prophetic imagination–and it requires us to step into the mystery of the unknown that lies beyond the far too familiar landscape of violence. In this series, join Host Serena Bian in speaking with three people who bear witness to the best and worst of humanity, holding a courageous moral imagination. Working and witnessing the front lines of injustice, war, climate change, these peacebuilders, mystics, storytellers hold space for the miraculous to emerge, refusing to be bound by a perceived reality of “what is possible.” Events in the series Monday, April 29 | Deepa Patel Weds, May 29 | Aljosie Aldrich Harding Tues, June 25 | Kalyanee Mam View Kalyanee's film “Lost World” (an excerpt is featured in this podcast) at: https://emergencemagazine.org/feature/lost-world/ Kalyanee Mam Born in Battambang, Cambodia, during the Khmer Rouge regime, which claimed the lives of over 2 million people, Kalyanee and her family were displaced from both their land and their home. Humans have lived with a changing climate  since we've been on this planet. But what archaeology and anthropology is able to reveal now, is how well civilizations have adapted to changing climates over the course of human history. Brian Fagan is an emeritus professor of anthropology at UC Santa Barbara and the author of more than 50 books including, Climate Chaos: Lessons on Survival from Our Ancestors and Floods, Famines, and Emperors: El Nino and the Fate of Civilizations. His work focuses on the history of human culture and our relationship with the climate, using ancient artifacts to piece together the story. Brian and Greg discuss how humans have historically adapted to climate change, the role climate has played in the rise and fall of civilizations, and the importance of understanding our past to prepare for future climate challenges.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why has climate and other big global physical things been underappreciated as historical causes?07:12: You've got a situation now where climate change is among us. We live with it every day. And every time there's a major storm, up come the media with the old climate change thing, which is all very well, but the fact of the matter is that we've lived with climate ever since we've been on this planet. The real immediacy of it has been in the last 10,000 years, particularly with the development of agriculture and herding, because then you're really getting into a situation where you've got the whole scene of climate changing rapidly.Looking at climate as a player in history09:12: We're looking at climate as a player in history, not necessarily a cause. But a major player, which it was.On the dynamics of herding and the breathing of deserts20:42: The dynamics of herding are very simple. In the final analysis, an awful lot of history, I think, is probably very simple. You get rainfall in the desert. Large, shallow lakes develop, water holes form, and a whole bit of vegetation comes up. What happens? Animals and, ultimately, humans and cattle move in. Then it dries up, and they move out. It's like lungs in and out. There's no question that there's movement of deserts, the lungs, or the breathing of the deserts.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Mortimer Wheeler Hubert LambGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at UC Santa BarbaraHis Work:Climate Chaos: Lessons on Survival from Our AncestorsThe Little Ice Age: How Climate Made History 1300-1850The Long Summer: How Climate Changed CivilizationFloods, Famines, and Emperors: El Nino and the Fate of Civilizations The Great Warming: Climate Change and the Rise and Fall of CivilizationsThe Intimate Bond: How Animals Shaped Human HistoryFishing: How the Sea Fed Civilization

Leo Calligaro is a farmer who shares his personal journey of health transformation. Born in Venezuela, Leo comes from a family with a strong agricultural background. His grandparents, who lived into their late 90s, grew their own food and inspired Leo's passion for farming. After moving to the United States, Leo initially embraced the fast-food culture, leading to a diabetes diagnosis. Determined to avoid insulin dependency, he sought alternative solutions. Through the books "The Complete Guide to Fasting" by Dr. Jason Fung and the teachings of Dr. Boz, Leo discovered the power of a low-carbohydrate, primarily carnivore diet combined with fasting. Within 90 days, Leo's health dramatically improved. His triglycerides, glucose, and A1C levels normalized, and he lost 110lbs. Inspired by his grandmother's wisdom to eat food as nature intended, Leo decided to grow his own food and founded Our Ancestors' Foods. Dr. Marie Mihalicz is a respected researcher, consultant, and founder of White Lightning Consulting, an organization committed to community-based healing and wellness retreats. She completed her Ph.D. at Royal Roads University, where her dissertation focused on Indigenous methods of healing and their potential for addressing the high rates of suicide and mental health issues in northern Saskatchewan communities. Her research findings have been used to influence policy change, with the aim of supporting sustainable, culturally relevant mental health services for Indigenous youth and families. Dr. Mihalicz and her team at White Lightning Consulting offer evidence-based healing and education programs that combine Western science and Indigenous healing methods. Through their collaborative community-based approach, they aim to empower Indigenous youth and families to pick up their knowledge bundles in today's world, strengthening and mobilizing community processes from the inside-out. In the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic and the complex intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous communities, Dr. Mihalicz and her team continue to work towards enhancing sustainable counseling supports and delivering effective leadership training workshops. In this 8th podcast of a nine part series, Marie Mihalicz discusses the importance of decolonizing trauma and healing the soul. She highlights how traditional ways of knowing are not recognized, and there are gaps in the mental health system that need to be addressed. Mihalicz emphasizes that trauma is passed down through blood, but so is healing, and it is essential to understand the historical links to trauma. She suggests that healing is in our DNA and that the delivery of mental health needs to change to include outdoor therapy, such as art therapy, breathwork, and hands-on ceremonies. Mihalicz believes that the biggest barriers to healing are the spiritual loss and the fact that traditional healing methods are not recognized by the current system. She emphasizes the need for protocols and boundaries around ceremonies, as well as space to sit down and talk about how we are doing. Mihalicz advocates for the use of traditional Indigenous practices in mental health treatment, such as prescribing ceremonies and mentorship through ceremony. Dr. Milton Mills, MD is a practicing urgent care physician in the Washington DC area, with a focus on the use of nutritional measures to reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. He is an Associate Director of Preventive Medicine and a member of the National Advisory Board for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), where he has been a major contributor to position papers presented to the United States Department of Agriculture regarding Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Dr. Mills has published several research journal articles dealing with racial bias in federal nutrition policy and has been the lead plaintiff in PCRM's class action lawsuit that asks for warning labels on milk. He is also a frequent volunteer at free medical clinics and travels widely, speaking at hospitals, churches and community centers throughout the country. Dr. Mills was featured in the documentary “What the Health” and will also appear in the upcoming film “The Silent Vegan”. He is a strong advocate for plant-based eating and addressing cultural disruption in the food system, particularly in communities of color. Through his work, Dr. Mills aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and to promote the use of sustainable, plant-based diets for both personal and planetary health. Dr. Mills discusses the impact of cultural disruption on plant-based eating and health in the BIPOC community in Nicolette's seventh PhD Podcast. Dr. Mills explains that BIPOC communities have become dumping grounds for agricultural excess, leading to food scarcity and a lack of access to nutritious food. He advocates for the use of core crops, such as the Three Sisters (corn, beans, and squash), which provide good calories and adequate nutrition while also being sustainable and renewable. Dr. Mills highlights the historical impact of Western culture on the diets of POC, including the use of commodity crops, and how it has resulted in systemic and structural racism. He argues that Western medicine operates from a disease model and must change the way it practices medicine, as band-aids will not cure diseases. Dr. Mills emphasizes the importance of decolonizing our diet, mindset, and way of relating to the world to protect the planet and ourselves. He advocates for narrative medicine to address trauma and abuse and for doctors to unlearn bad habits and become part of the solution. Find Dr. Milton Mills at:Website: www.drmiltonmillsplantbasednation.comInstagram: @MiltonMillsMDBook: Discussed on the PODCAST:The Silent Vegan Documentary - https://youtu.be/RaSK8DqZhLoDr Loxman Opreary – Midwest veg fest -They're Trying To Kill Us Documentary - www.theyretryingtokillus.comCasablanca - www.imdb.com/title/tt0034583/Physicians CommitteeDr. T Colin Campbells Centre for Nutrition StudiesDr. Dean Ornish -Dr C Esselstyn -The Gerson Therapy Learn More:Ready to launch your career as a certified Metabolic Nutrition & Detox Coach? Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson is a distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland College Park. With a passion for material culture, Dr. Williams-Forson focuses her research on African Americans' lives in the United States from the late 19th century to the present. She is a multidisciplinary academic, serving as an affiliate faculty member of the Theatre, Dance, and Performing Studies, the Departments of Anthropology, African American Studies, The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and the Consortium on Race, Gender, and Ethnicity. Her extensive research in this area employs cultural studies, intersectionality, and popular culture to inform our understanding of historical legacies of race and gender representation. In Nicolette's second PhD interview, Dr. Psyche discusses her doctoral research on the association between Black people and chicken, which turned into just one chapter of her broader research. Their conversation explores the foodways of Black people, Southern food, and the legacy of slavery, which resulted in African slaves' agricultural knowledge. The discussion also touches on the complexity of factors contributing to Black people's health, including trauma and violence, and how food choices are not solely responsible. They highlight the importance of understanding that choosing what to eat is a middle/upper-class conversation, and food shaming should be avoided. Instead, we need to consider factors such as taste, access, availability, affordability, and knowledge of how to prepare food. Dr. Psyche emphasizes that eating is a necessity, and we need to help people where they are. Find Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson at:Website: www.psychewilliamsforson.comFacebook: @psyche.williamsforsonInstagram: @buildinghouses9Twitter: @pwilliamsforsonBooks:Building Houses out of Chicken Legs: Black Women, Food, and Power - https://a.co/d/3xdA4RHEating While Black: Food Shaming and Race in America - https://a.co/d/hrAJD4wTaking Food Public: Redefining Food in a Changing World - https://a.co/d/4BJnOpm Discussed on the PODCAST:Alice Walker – https://alicewalkersgarden.com/Black Therapist Thoughts - Patricia Hill Colins – https://bit.ly/3LpOZ9EDarleen Clark Hine - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darlene_Clark_HineElsa Barkley Brown - https://history.umd.edu/directory/elsa-barkley-brownContending forces 1900 - Pauline Hopkins – https://a.co/d/aVr6b28Vibration Cooking - Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor - https://a.co/d/9yqFLEsIron Pots and Wooden Spoons: Africa's Gift to New World Cooking - Jessica Harris - https://a.co/d/jh7NllHBlack Rice - Judith Carne – https://a.co/d/6V6o69ySlavery at Sea, Terror, Sex and Sickness in the Middle Passage - Sowande M Mustakeem – https://a.co/d/42gtccu19th Century Slave Diet - https://bit.ly/3mYoGNCCurated Exhibition Fire and Freedom - Food and Enslavement in Early American - https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/fireandfreedom/index.htmlMarcie Cohen-Ferris – https://marciecohenferris.com/Isobella Winston – https://bit.ly/3LrZRDZFilm – Theyr'e Trying To Kill Us – John Levis - https://www.theyretryingtokillus.com/Good Meat Documentary - Lacota Community South Dekota – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zIP1Cer_PIChef Andres World Central Kitchen - https://wck.org/teamPregnancy Aids Centre – https://pregnancyaidcenter.org/homepage/Vegan Soul Sistuhs - www.instagram.com/vegansoulsistuhs/Film - Contagion – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1598778/Doc - The Invisible Vegan – https://theinvisiblevegan.com/Doc - Ugly Delicious - https://www.netflix.com/ca/title/80170368.%202018 Learn More:Ready to launch your career as a certified Metabolic Nutrition & Detox Coach? Dr. Adrianne Lickers Xavier is a remarkable academic who is currently serving as the acting Director of the Indigenous Studies Program at McMaster University, where she has made valuable contributions to the fields of Indigenous Studies and Anthropology. She earned her undergraduate degree in Anthropology from McMaster University and went on to complete her MA and doctorate at the esteemed Royal Roads University, where her research focused on Indigenous food systems. Dr. Xavier is a passionate and dedicated teacher who has designed and delivered courses in the areas of Contemporary Indigenous Issues, Indigenous Food Security and Food Systems, Indigenous Food Sovereignty, Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Methodologies. Dr. Xavier is a true scholar whose research interests include the study of Indigenous food security and sovereignty, Indigenous land connections and re-matriation, Indigenous food ways, and Indigenous ways of knowing. Her exceptional work in this area was recently recognized when she was awarded the new McMaster Indigenous Research Institute “Indigenous In-Community Scholar Fellowship” in 2020. This project aims to expand the understanding and capacity around food security and sovereignty in Dr. Xavier's community of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Her achievements were further recognized when she was awarded the prestigious Petro Canada McMaster Young Innovator Award for 2021-22, which allows undergraduates to engage in Indigenous research and focuses on building community. Dr. Xavier's appearance on Nicolette's first PhD podcast was a tour-de-force. She shared her insights on a range of issues, including the root causes of disease, food sovereignty versus food security, and the impact of colonization on access to nutritious foods that are part of one's heritage. She also touched on the ways in which racism acts as a barrier to food and disease, and how trauma can cause disease. Dr. Xavier underscored the importance of listening to our bodies and the foods it craves. She passionately believes that educating the next seven generations of people about food and history is vital, and that even social media can play a role in influencing the kinds of foods people are exposed to. Dr. Xavier's upbringing was centered around whole foods, as her mom grew everything or traded for other foods and she reflects on how this all changed when they moved to Canada. Find Dr Adrianne Lickers Xavier at:Website: http://bit.ly/3ZFrmxoFacebook: @mcmasterihmLinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3ZWr9WN Discussed on the PODCAST:The Arrell Food institute Guelph University – https://arrellfoodinstitute.ca/McMaster Healthy Roots - https://stearnslab.ca/tag/healthy-roots/Canada Food Guide - https://food-guide.canada.ca/en/Autumn Peltier - www.instagram.com/autumn.peltierGreta Thunberg - www.instagram.com/gretathunbergO.Noir Restaurant – http://www.onoir.com/Indian indentureship in Trinidad - https://fb.watch/jhRxdmfXNa/Book – Legacy: Trauma, Story and Indigenous Healing, Suzanne Methot -https://a.co/d/gv6nsNqDocumentary – Gather - https://gather.film/Cathy's Crawly Composters – https://www.cathyscomposters.com/CBC Guelph University Podcast - https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1100042307763 Learn More:Ready to launch your career as a certified Metabolic Nutrition & Detox Coach? As a well renowned fitness expert, John Lewis has spent over 2 decades in the health and fitness industry and played Division I College basketball. John is highly passionate about not only his own health and fitness, but that of others as well. Today, John has taken his passion for health and is now directing his first feature length documentary focused on food and social justice. John has teamed up with the maker of the award winning “What The Health” to create their joint venture “They're Trying To Kill US”. The film follows co-director John Lewis from his beginnings as an adopted child from a crack-addicted birth mother, growing up as an overweight kid in the violence of Ferguson, Missouri, to becoming a prominent health and wellness advocate promoting compassion.Audiences journey with John as he crosses the country seeking answers to why Americans of Colour suffer from disproportionately higher rates of chronic disease than their European American counterparts, while examining the intersections of food, disease, race, poverty, institutional racism and government corruption. Through interviews with cultural influencers, doctors, researchers, politicians, attorneys, professional athletes, activists and experts in the field of food justice, John begins to unravel a story of collusion that has kept millions of US Americans sick, while the industries responsible make billions of dollars.Today, Nicolette engages in a conversation with John Lewis, delving into his remarkable journey from playing basketball to finding a new path towards wellness and purpose. The journey commenced in 2004 when the passing of a close friend compelled him to seek solutions for his own health issues, including IBS. By adopting a plant-based diet, he experienced a remarkable transformation within a mere two weeks, shedding inflammation and gaining newfound energy. However, the pivotal moment arrived when his mother was diagnosed with colon cancer, sparking his research into the link between lifestyle choices and diseases such as hypertension and heart disease. Through personal experiences and learning from the mistakes of others, he uncovered the ancient roots of veganism in Jainism, realizing that indigenous cultures had long embraced plant-based lifestyles. Along his path, he encountered pre-packaged vegan foods, which prompted him to transition towards whole foods, expanding his palate and understanding of diverse culinary traditions. Embracing his role as a catalyst for change, he founded the Badass Vegan movement, advocating for the planet, social justice, and personal well-being.With a focus on providing answers and promoting inclusivity, John tackles various topics, ranging from the disproportionate impact of food-related issues on Black communities to the manipulative tactics employed by insurance and fast-food companies. Through his film, "They're Trying to Kill Us," and his book, "Badass Vegan," his aim is to empower individuals to fuel their bodies, challenge the system, and live authentically. Join us on this transformative journey as we explore the history of veganism and discover how embracing a plant-based lifestyle can foster healing for ourselves and the world we inhabit. Hey Family! In this episode I dive into some of the ways we have been MEDICALLY Institutionalized! The Medical (aka Healthscare) industry has significantly impaired OUR ability to care for and sustain Ourselves. We have allowed ourselves to be "Medically" manipulated into Our own demise. There is so much we DO NOT know about the medical industry, which causes so much harm to US and OUR Lineages from the things we do, eat, see, and think about regarding health and disease. We have listened for too long to people who CANNOT create US and DO NOT care for OUR Longevity, thus it is time WE start to refer to what Our Ancestors did and practiced to sustain Us given WE are here today. "Medically" refers to the substances, treatments, people, practices, ideologies, and etc. Nature NEVER require a hospitals, pills, or amputations. Nature simply supplies what's needed to PURPOSEFULLY maintain LIFE, Lineage, and Legacy. We need to take new notes and reclaim OUR Health and Well-being. In this episode, genealogist Bernice Alexander Bennett shares information about the Homestead Act of 1862, and why it's critical that African Americans know about the Homestead Act when researching their ancestry. If your family was listed as a farmer, Bennett says, it's important to check the Homestead Act records to see if your ancestors participated in this program. Bernice Alexander Bennett is an award-winning author, genealogist, nationally recognized guest speaker, storyteller, and producer-host of the popular Research at the National Archives and Beyond BlogTalkRadio program. If you don't know him, he is TikTok famous, and has a growing instagram following, and beyond that, he's an overall amazing soul. I enjoyed sharing in conversation viewpoints on toxic masculinity- where Professor Odi beautifully broke down the long heritage and use of the word "masculine." We then discussed physics and the very real nature of our reality. We expanded on the necessity of one having emotional intelligence, and the ability to maneuver a world, beyond the primal 5 senses. Get ready for an amazing conversation, and check out more about him below. Hey. I'm Professor Odi. I'm a Millennial, and I'm an Africentric Holistic Wealth Coach. My specialty is a Hip-Hop Therapy Based Intervention Style, Quantum Emotional Intelligence and Metaphysical Spiritual Alignment Strategies. In Eurocentric terms, I'm a "culturally competent eclectic" clinician. I have earned two degrees of knowledge, wisdom and understanding at two HBCUs, which are our contemporary Temples of the Universe(ity) dervied from the Original Mystics, Our Ancestors, and Our Predecessors. I Mastered my Craft at the Temple at The Highest of Seven Hills, and in my total years of discipline after my eighteenth year with my mother, I have accumulated in total as of this writing: 85,965.6 hours of study, and yet my knowledge is still incomplete.
