How did George S. Mickelson come from behind to become Governor of South Dakota? In this episode of History 605 we speak to Paul Wilson who worked on Mickelson's campaign staff for both the 1986 and 1990 campaigns for Governor. His use of short but effective commercials speaking to voters and focused campaigning in selected parts of the state won the election for Mickelson. Wilson also crafted the 1990 State of the State address Mickelson introduced the Year of Reconciliation. The episode is based on Wilson's essay in the coming Plains Political Traditions, Vol 4, edited by Jon Lauck and Paula Nelson.

John Thune grew up in Murdo, South Dakota. His interest in politics was sparked at a young age after making five of six free throws during a freshman high school basketball game. He was later greeted by a spectator who said, “I noticed you missed one.” That spectator happened to be a well-known sports enthusiast and then-South Dakota U.S. Rep. Jim Abdnor. The introduction was the start of a friendship that ignited John's career in public service.John received his undergraduate degree at Biola University and his master's degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota. Upon completion of his master's degree in 1984, he married Kimberley Weems, a native of Doland, South Dakota.John's attraction to public service took him to Washington, D.C., to work for that sports enthusiast and then-U.S. Sen. Jim Abdnor. He then served at the Small Business Administration under an appointment from President Ronald Reagan. In 1989, John and his family returned to South Dakota, where he served as the executive director of the South Dakota Republican Party. In 1991, then-Gov. George S. Mickelson appointed him to be state railroad director, a position he held until 1993, when he became executive director of the South Dakota Municipal League. In 1996, with a shoestring budget and the support of family and friends, John won his first term as South Dakota's lone member of the U.S. House of Representatives. John was re-elected to a second term by the largest margin in South Dakota history. He returned again to Washington in 2001 to serve his third term in the House.John then honored his 1996 campaign pledge to serve only three terms in the House. After a narrow loss in a U.S. Senate race in 2002, he won his current Senate seat in 2004, when he made history by defeating a sitting Senate party leader for the first time in 52 years. In 2010, John was elected to serve a second term in the Senate in a rare unopposed race. He was only the third Republican and the only South Dakotan to run unopposed for the Senate since direct elections were created in 1913. John was elected to a third term in 2016.For the 117th Congress, John serves on the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee; the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; and the Finance Committee. He serves as ranking member of the Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Communications, Media, and Broadband and ranking member of the Finance Committee's Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight. He also serves as the Senate Republican whip, the number two position in Senate Republican leadership, and has previously served as chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee from 2009–2011 and chairman of the Senate Republican Conference from 2012-2018.John and his wife Kimberley live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and they have two grown daughters and five grandchildren. In his free time, John enjoys spending time with his family, pheasant hunting, and running.

Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states. We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode forty-one is South Dakota. The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America. Here's our list for South Dakota: 1. Go Caving: Wind Cave National Park near Hot Springs and Jewel Cave National Monument near Custer in the Black Hills are two of the longest caves in the world at 140 miles and 180 miles (and counting), respectively. Get yourself underground and take a guided rock tour. Each cave offers unique formations, including boxwork at Wind Cave and the beautiful crystals in Jewel Cave. If you are truly daring (and not claustrophobic) opt for the challenging Wild Caving Tours that give an adventurous and real caving experience. 2. Paddle the Missouri River: The Missouri River divides the state into two regions, affectionately known as 'west river' and 'east river.' There’s a lot of fun to be had on a river adventure and you’ll find a nice mix of free-flowing current and reservoirs you can paddle through. Great for day trips and camping, you can stay on the river all day or stop for a hike, go fishing or just enjoy a historic journey as you paddle near the lands of five Native American tribes. 3. RIDE THE MICKELSON TRAIL FROM DEADWOOD TO EDGEMONT The 109-mile George S. Mickelson Trail, which was once a railroad bed, meanders through South Dakota's Black Hills National Forest. Today, cyclists, runners, snowshoers and, in some areas, snowmobilers all share the trail. The surface is mostly packed gravel and the trail itself is relatively flat for most of the way, which makes it a great spot for families and people of all abilities. Side note – you get major South Dakota bragging rights if you bike the entire trail in one day. 4. HIKE BLACK ELK PEAK At 7,242 feet, Black Elk Peak (formerly known as Harney Peak) is the highest point east of the Rockies in the United States. Nestled in the Black Hills National Forest, this peak boasts 100-mile views from its summit – be sure to check out the unforgettable views from the old stone fire tower. There are a variety of trails that will bring you to the top, most in the range of 6-8 miles round trip. 5. Earth Resources and Science Center 6. Hike Bear Butte Peak just outside of Sturgis. Thanks for listening to Season 3 of our podcast featuring all 50 US States and some of each state's unique and hopefully lesser known to you Outdoor Adventures. ABOUT JODY HALSTED Jody Halsted is her family’s chief vacation planner and a pro at creating meals with a few Dutch Ovens and a pile of charcoal. Jody is also an award winning writer and the publisher at Camping Tips for Everyone, were the only wrong way to camp is to not camp at all! Follow Jody on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. TIPS FOR VISITING THE BLACK HILLS, SD  Be aware that June is the rainiest month. When planning your trip to the Black Hills you should try to give yourself at least five days to explore the area. There is so much beyond Mount Rushmore to see. Plan to visit the lighting ceremony at night at Mount Rushmore. They have all of the present veterans go up on stage, then they lower the flag with a ceremony and light the monument. Needles Highway has some great views and tunnels. But beware that there are some narrow spots along with the small tunnels to drive through, so you should only drive it in a smaller vehicle. If you like learning about ancient history, the Mammoth site in Hot Springs is absolutely amazing. It is the largest continuous mammoth dig in the world, and they are the only place that have found both the Woolly and the Columbian Mammoth in the same place. If you like biking, the George S. Mickelson trail would be a great place to spend a day or even half a day in the outdoors. Both Wind Cave and Jewel Cave tours book up really fast and tickets are not sold online. In order to make sure you can get a ticket you will need to be there first thing in the morning. Try to plan at least six months in advance for your trip since lodging and camping book up really fast. Keep in mind that the months of July and August are really hot and if you plan on making your trip in that time you should plan and pack accordingly. If you are planning to do outdoor activities make sure to bring enough water and to prepare for the worst case. Don't over pack your days with too much. You want to enjoy the area. Plus there will be more driving than you think and things will take longer than you expect. BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Jody recommends getting a photo at the Avenue of Flags with Mount Rushmore in the background. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Jody loves to wear her Margaux Cargaux pants by SCOTTeVEST because of the amount of usable pockets. She also likes her Columbia capris which are great for kayaking and paddleboarding. She never travels without her Merino wool quarter zip pullover top, that she finds are great for layering.
