Lealand Schoon is a 28 year veteran of the NRCS and works as an Area Rangeland Specialist out of Murdo, SD. Leland also has some land, and runs 150 head of sheep along with 30 cows, putting the grazing management and soil biology expertise he has acquired to work. Lealand's ultimate question is “what is this action going to do for the soil biology?” We dive into some soil biology, but with the aim of how grazing management actually can increase photosynthesis and grass production and feed soil microbes. The heart of this discussion I imagine for the grazier is just to look at the terms like grazing readiness, partial defoliation, primary, secondary and fall tillers, rest and regrowth/recovery after defoliation – Lealand has a great way of explaining this wonderful mutualistic relationship that man, cattle and grass have with one another and how they interact with the elements. We discuss a lot of other things but at the end of the day, Lealand is a keen observer and was the first one to help me to look at rangeland with new eyes. ALAN ROBERTSON is the man who reared the likes of Kris Boyd and Steven Naismith as Kilmarnock's head of youth. But now he's trying to get Bonnyton Thistle to grow up fast. After leaving the South of Scotland League for the West, they were immediately plunged into the top flight. It's been a steep learning curve. They sit bottom of the pile but they have beaten Pollok and narrowly lost to Cumbernauld United on the weekend. We hear about the transition for the club and the work going on behind the scenes. One of the humblest men in the game, Alan also tells us about how he's finding life managing adults rather than kids – and recalls the first time he saw Boydy score goals. We also look back at Alan's career, which saw him play over 600 games for Kilmarnock. PLUS it's been a week of drama at Pollok. After seeing THREE men sent off against Auckinleck last Saturday they still managed to draw 3-3 with the league leaders. But just days later they were booted out of the junior cup along with Irvine Victoria after an injury time fight led to their clash the week before being called off. John Thune grew up in Murdo, South Dakota. His interest in politics was sparked at a young age after making five of six free throws during a freshman high school basketball game. He was later greeted by a spectator who said, “I noticed you missed one.” That spectator happened to be a well-known sports enthusiast and then-South Dakota U.S. Rep. Jim Abdnor. The introduction was the start of a friendship that ignited John's career in public service.John received his undergraduate degree at Biola University and his master's degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota. Upon completion of his master's degree in 1984, he married Kimberley Weems, a native of Doland, South Dakota.John's attraction to public service took him to Washington, D.C., to work for that sports enthusiast and then-U.S. Sen. Jim Abdnor. He then served at the Small Business Administration under an appointment from President Ronald Reagan. In 1989, John and his family returned to South Dakota, where he served as the executive director of the South Dakota Republican Party. In 1991, then-Gov. George S. Mickelson appointed him to be state railroad director, a position he held until 1993, when he became executive director of the South Dakota Municipal League. In 1996, with a shoestring budget and the support of family and friends, John won his first term as South Dakota's lone member of the U.S. House of Representatives. John was re-elected to a second term by the largest margin in South Dakota history. He returned again to Washington in 2001 to serve his third term in the House.John then honored his 1996 campaign pledge to serve only three terms in the House. After a narrow loss in a U.S. Senate race in 2002, he won his current Senate seat in 2004, when he made history by defeating a sitting Senate party leader for the first time in 52 years. In 2010, John was elected to serve a second term in the Senate in a rare unopposed race. He was only the third Republican and the only South Dakotan to run unopposed for the Senate since direct elections were created in 1913. John was elected to a third term in 2016.For the 117th Congress, John serves on the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee; the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; and the Finance Committee. He serves as ranking member of the Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Communications, Media, and Broadband and ranking member of the Finance Committee's Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight. He also serves as the Senate Republican whip, the number two position in Senate Republican leadership, and has previously served as chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee from 2009–2011 and chairman of the Senate Republican Conference from 2012-2018.John and his wife Kimberley live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and they have two grown daughters and five grandchildren. This week's podcast has leadership and history at its core as themes. However we begin with Murdo Fraser who seems to have undergone a road to Damascus conversion with his proposal that Scotland should move to STV for Holyrood elections.Lesley was stunned to find herself agreeing with him but reckons he should be careful what he wishes for while admiring his sheer brassneckedness given his silence on First Past the Post for Westminster.Joanna Cherry and Douglas Chapman are the latest members of the SNP NEC to resign over matters of "transparency and scrutiny". Chris Hanlon has decided to hang on in there. We look at the background to this ongoing dispute and wonder whether staying or going is the better course of action. The Royals seem to have got it right in terms of their reaction to the Johnson proposal for a new royal (not) yacht but revelations concerning the Royal Household's exemption from equalities legislation, at their request, brings into sharp focus, once again, their position at the centre of the   anti-democratic nature of the British state.Joe Biden visited Tulsa to memorialise the hidden from history Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 signalling a fundamental shift,at least in domestic terms, of leadership in the USA.All this plus the usual meanderings. And no, it wasn't Roy Plomley whose catch phrase was "As the sun slowly sinks in the west".It was James A. FitzPatrick.

How should Christians engage in the Scottish independence debate? The finance spokespeople for the Scottish Conservatives and the SNP are both Christian but on opposite sides. This week, the Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser describes what role he thinks Christians ought to play when discussing independence and how he thinks Scotland's future should be prayed for. Murdo also explains why he didn't know he was an MSP until a journalist rang him up and Tim Farron speaks about how we should respond to political losing as he analyses last week's election results. To get your question answered by Tim in the next episode, write it in an email to farron@premier.org.uk or add this number to your phone and send us a message on WhatsApp: 07711 701133

This WORK OF THE WEEK might be a little offside!Sometimes even the most memorable images can take the shortest time to make. A case in point is Portrait of Roy Keane (2002) by Murdo MacLeod, which was shot in a Manchester hotel foyer soon after its subject had infamously departed the Irish soccer team in Saipan.“Having only a few minutes to take the photographs,” MacLeod remembers, “I produced my rotting head of a dead raven from my pocket and held it to my eye, saying ‘Could you do this?'” Taking the raven's head, Keane asked, ‘do you mean like this?' and a few shots later the artist had his portrait for a cover feature in Observer Sport Monthly.Raised on the northern coast of the Isle of Lewis, Murdo MacLeod (b.1963) studied at Napier College (now Edinburgh Napier University) and has been a professional press photographer since 1985. In his work, he often makes use of dramatic lighting, unusual poses, and unexpected props. This lends his photographs a sometimes bizarre or even surreal quality, as with his Portrait of Roy Keane (2002), that even verges “on the ridiculous.” MacLeod – who has also photographed the likes of Bobby Charlton, Bill Clinton, Ricky Gervais, Jeremy Paxman, J.K. Rowling, Michael Schumacher, and Tilda Swinton – is a previous recipient of UK Press Photographer of the Year. You can find Portrait of Roy Keane (2002) by Murdo MacLeod just off our main landing on Floor 1. He explains why he'll forever be grateful to Blantyre Victoria for giving him a route back into the game and the opportunity to be a boss in his own right.
