In this episode we want to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year.  We also want to touch base on why we love anything and everything outdoors.  It's about the adventures.  We are slowly turning into an indoor species and for many of us, myself included,  too much time indoors starts to feel like a life sucking prison.  We need the outdoors and the many kinds of adventures that await us there.  It is what fuels us, keeps us sharp and fills our souls and hearts with memories and the feeling of being alive. Live your life to the fullest, follow your calling and go and seek your adventure!

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Emma Carmichael. I first met Emma in the London Indie Authors Meetup Group (https://www.meetup.com/London-Indie-Authors/), where I found out about her adventures, particularly the one we discuss today. In 2009, Emma quit her job and bought a classic Serbian car, which she drove in a huge circle around the Balkans.   This adventure is unlike anything else we've discussed on this show. It's also unlike any trip I've ever been on. I hope Emma's journey inspires you to come up with your own wild adventures.   About Emma Carmichael Born in Edinburgh. Lived in Edinburgh, London, Sydney, Strasbourg, Pristina, Sarajevo and now back in London for now. Traveller, podcaster, writer - not particularly in that order! Worked as a Conservation Building Surveyor for Historic Royal Palaces from 1995-2004 Worked for the Council of Europe, involved with post-conflict conservation and cultural heritage from 2004-2009 Travelled the Balkans in a vintage Zastava 750 from August-October 2009 Wrote the first draft of Driving Tito in 2010 while living in Strasbourg, France Moved to Sarajevo in Bosnia & Herzegovina worked on a cultural heritage programme for the town of Vares. 2011-2012 Returned to the UK in 2012 and opened my bookshop Travelling Through in 2014-2019. Published Driving Tito in June 2019 Began podcasting in 2020 to present day Travelled solo, in groups, with my partner, with my sister, my family, my brother and/or with a friend. Each experience is different. Each notable in its own way. Each can be enjoyable or a nightmare - it's a mindset thing. It's about compromise even when travelling alone!   WALKED: a section of the St Jacques de Compostella from Le Puy en Velay to Conques; the Mozarabe Camino, Portuguese Camino, the Coast to Coast (UK), Hadrian's Wall Walk TRAVELLED to: Round the world ticket when 22yrs old for 20 months. Partly with a friend / and solo. Separate trips to: Russia/Mongolia - Vietnam - Argentina/Chile - Brazil - Colombia - many parts of Europe. RUNNING: love 5km runs; ran half-marathon in Stockholm, Sweden (never again!) CYCLING: still have my bicyle from when I was 14yrs old - who needs more than five gears? Cycled many of the Scottish isles. Cycling cities of Strasbourg and Amsterdam.   Travelling Through is a concept, whether it be a place, a community, or life. It's how we respond instinctively to this constant state of movement that's important to our well-being.   Website Podcast Instagram Facebook Twitter   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn What inspired Emma to quit her job and drive around the Balkans in a Serbian Zastava 750 car What it was like to drive a classic car around the Balkans How Emma traveled around tiny villages without speaking the local languages How Emma remembered all the details from the adventure so she could write her book Emma's top tips for a Balkan adventure   Things We Discussed Zastava 750 car  Vellum for publishing    Related Episodes 438 Jenny Mowbray ~ Solo Travel + Adventure When You're in a Relationship 433 Robert Twigger ~ How Adventure Satisfies Our Need for Childlike Play (now with downloadable transcript!) 383 Anne Malambo ~ How Solo Travel Can Change Our Lives (now with downloadable transcript!) 374 Holly Worton ~ How Outdoors Adventures + Travel Help With Digital Detox (now with downloadable transcript!) 367 Holly Worton ~ Finding Yourself Through Solo Travel and Outdoor Adventures (now with downloadable transcript!)   Connect With Holly Website Facebook Instagram Twitter Pinterest Google+ LinkedIn   How to Subscribe Click here to subscribe via iTunes Click here to subscribe via RSS Click here to subscribe via Stitcher   Help Spread the Word If you enjoyed this episode, please head on over to iTunes and kindly leave us a rating and a review! I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Racquelle Pakutz. She left her corporate job in 2019 and began hiking daily for her mental well-being. Racquelle used hiking as an escape from the anxiety and unknowns as she transitioned into a full-time entrepreneur. While she hiked, she listened to many authors, podcasters and influential people that helped rewire her negative thought loops.   As you know, I love everything mindset-related, and I love how Racquelle combined mindset work with hiking and outdoor adventures. She has a great perspective on how to easily change your limiting beliefs while at the same time practicing mindfulness in the outdoors.   About Racquelle Pakutz Racquelle Pakutz is the President of Zen Freight Solutions Inc., founder of Healthy Happy Hiker, wife, mother, and healer. She began her business journey a few short weeks after graduating with a BA in business management over the course of 2.5 years. This of course made possible by the fact that she LOVES to learn. This ambition to fill her mind flourished at the opportunities that were in front of her in the logistics field. After gaining a decade-plus of experience in logistics, learning the ups and downs and rights and wrongs, she chose to leave the corporate world to begin to focus on her health, family, and quality of life. This would mark the start of a new way of life including healthy living, mindfulness, self-love, and entrepreneurship. She constantly strives to grow and evolve herself and her portfolio every single day. From books to magnificent future business ventures, stay tuned to her family's journey to learn more about what is possible, and maybe even a little more about yourself!   Websites: Zen Freight Solutions Twenty Won Book Happy Hiker Academy   LinkedIn Facebook   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn How hiking helped Racquelle with her mental health The kinds of podcasts and audiobooks Racquelle listened to How hiking helped Racquelle rewire her negative thought loops How hiking can help with a major identity shift Why hiking provides a safe place to see your true self How hiking can help you to find your purpose How Racquelle uses breathwork and body movement on her outdoor adventures Top tips for others struggling with mental health issues   Things We Discussed The Tao of Fully Feeling: Harvesting Forgiveness out of Blame, by Pete Walker  Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao, by Wayne W. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Jenny Mowbray. We recently met on Instagram, and when I clicked through to her blog and read some of the articles, I knew I wanted to have her on the show. I've been wanting to talk about this topic for ages, but I didn't just want to provide my own perspective. Jenny has some great tips for people in a committed relationship who want to travel solo. Whether you're already an experienced solo traveler or you're curious about how to get started, you'll get something out of this episode. I hope that with this conversation, we've planted some seeds in people's minds about how they can travel solo—even if they're in a relationship.   About Jenny Mowbray Jenny is a passionate advocate of embarking on solo travel adventures when in a relationship. Having traveled solo when she was single, she was surprised by the curious reaction she received from family and friends when she continued to enjoy solo trips after she met her partner. Such was her fascination that she has begun to write about the topic on her blog Orchids to Olives. Jenny believes wholeheartedly that after overcoming the initial barriers that the idea of solo travel sometimes presents, it holds many benefits on both a personal and relationship level and can deepen the connection with ourselves and our loved ones.   Website Instagram Pinterest Facebook   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn How solo travel benefits us on a personal level How solo travel can actually help our relationship Common fears that people who are in a committed relationship have about solo travel The misunderstandings that can arise when one partner wants to travel solo How to work through any fears and challenges around solo travel when in a relationship How to alleviate your partner's anxiety when you're away How to handle communication with your partner when you're traveling solo Jenny's top tips for people in relationships who want to travel solo but are afraid to approach the topic   Things We Discussed Anais Nïn quote: “Where the myth fails, human love begins. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Tori Joy Geiger. Tori has experienced chronic illness from birth, and that has affected her ability to be an athlete and have outdoor adventures—but it hasn't stopped her at all. She's learned how to work with her body so she can have the experiences she wants, at her own pace and in her own way. This was such a delightful conversation. Tori has done loads of mindset work and has gone on a journey of self-knowledge, and everything she has done has gotten her to a place where she can do the things she wants in a way that works for her. Whether you have a chronic illness or other life challenges, I know you'll get something out of this episode.   About Tori Tori is a congenital heart defect survivor and has undergone multiple open-heart surgeries and procedures throughout her life. Growing up, she was an avid athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball, and track in high school. She went on to play volleyball at Corban University and later join the track team at George Fox University as a high jumper. With a heart for others affected by chronic illnesses such as CHD, Tori started a lifestyle blog where she shares lifestyle and chronic illness tips. Part of her mission is to have a “heart that beats for others,” and to help other chronic illness warriors achieve a life of fulfillment and impact. Tori does this through her 50/50 CHD Promise; 50% of her blogging commissions are donated to CHD organizations. I also got to talk about building an outdoor community in Virginia, completing Trail Quest by visiting every Virginia State Park, and some of my most memorable hikes. Also included in our discussion – solo hiking and solo adventuring, outdoor safety, my gear, four-season hiking, one of my personal fears (which is probably not what you would expect), and my advice for beginner adventurers. Without further ado, here is my first guest appearance on She Opts Out Podcast. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Walker Brandt. We had a fantastic conversation about nature, outdoor adventures, and healing from trauma. Walker is such a beautiful, positive person who has been through a lot of challenges in her early life, and she's sought support from nature in getting through them. Early on in the episode, Walker talks about some good advice that she received: that our stories don't belong to us; they belong to the people who can benefit from hearing them for healing and growth. I hope that this episode inspires you to not only seek help from nature in your own healing, but to tell your story to help others heal themselves.    About Walker Brandt Refusing to be broken at the age of 14 during a suicide attempt, Walker began her independent journey to overcome the trauma of growing up in a violent alcoholic family. A voice that day told her to “Stop. Leave.” She listened and left home as a teen runaway and later became an emancipated minor at 16. As a child, escaping into nature and her keen imagination taught her to heal, resolve and evolve through her connection to creation and the Divine energy found there. It became her dream to create a life unrecognizable to what she had experienced in her family. Through a dedicated commitment to personal training and development, she began to choose her own path. An innately creative personality led her to the craft of acting as a young adult. She embraced the unknown and began affirming her dreams with the belief that creating success was possible! In March 2020, her first book, AWAKEN – Discovering Yourself Through the Light of Your Innocence, was released. Awaken shares her intimate journey to overcome the trauma of her youth and the anxiety it had caused. Awaken was written to assist others in consciously creating a movement within of happiness and success. Choosing to awaken is an intentional and conscious shift in energy to expand beyond the bondage of past circumstances and into their happiness and success personally & professionally.   Walker's image and personality have been utilized in the entertainment and advertising industries for over 25 years. She has appeared in international blockbuster films, TV shows, and thousands of Advertising Campaigns and commercials for global brands.   Website Instagram LinkedIn Facebook Facebook 2   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn How nature helped Walker to recover from trauma How imagination can help us to survive difficult experiences The power of certain words, such as “temporary” (this is a good one!) James was born in Reading and shares a huge passion for the great outdoors. After completing a Degree at Southampton University in Outdoor Adventure management business, James started his own company offering rock climbing and scuba diving holidays worldwide. After selling this company, James brought his first property in 2013 with the proceeds.James then went to work for a billionaire on one of the most prestigious super yachts in the world as a personal scuba diving instructor for the owner. Here James saved his earnings and invested in more property. After many passages all over the globe, James left the yacht industry and moved to Cornwall where he was offered a fantastic opportunity as head property manager for Latitude50, a high-end luxury holiday lettings company managing some of the most luxurious coastal homes in the UK.Here James saw the opportunity for the serviced accommodation model and has continued to build his own personal portfolio in beautiful Cornwall. This portfolio expansion enabled James to quit his Job and continue his eight year's experience as a full-time property developer which was his dream from the outset.James' interests and hobbies consist of, mountaineering, surfing, scuba diving, tennis, skiing and property development. From a young age James was introduced to property as his father owned a small independent high end estate agency based in Berkshire.James has always enjoyed property and loves the idea and execution of renovations, creating beautiful spaces for people to call home. James loves being a landlord and looking after people so that the whole process is enjoyable and stress free for everyone.About your host, Tej:Tej graduated from King's' College London with a BSc Biochemistry in 2014, he then pursued a career in Medical Education and Marketing. Soon after his second job… he was fired! A moment of relief and freedom was what he felt, not sure what his mother felt when he told her he was jobless at 23…He then went in search of a more ethical path, a business he could set up where the reward was equal to the work put in. “If they are making pounds, why am I making pennies?” - was his thought process, not happy with slow progression and bureaucracy (& having to wear smart shoes everyday). This lead him to opening a Recruitment business (not sure where the ethics went) which doubled in profit every year, for 4 years. He hated it. Golden handcuffs they call it.Fortunately, he used the cash he'd built up from that business, to educate himself in Property Investing. Soon, he'd stopped the business and transitioned into Property Investment full time. He then had a slow start -Purchasing 15 properties in his first 9 months, using over £650,000 of Investor Finance, he built a £1,200,000 property portfolio and created £30,000 of profit from flips. This gave him ‘financial freedom', but it was the most stressful period of his life. Growing quickly is very painful.Let's not forget that his Podcast grew to be the most-reviewed UK Property Podcast, peaking at 4,000 unique downloads per episode. His Podcast (Tej Talks) now sits at 660,000 downloads in over 100 countries and has 489 reviews, rated 5/5. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Isabel Firecracker. Back in 2019, I was a guest on her podcast, The Honest Uproar. I really enjoyed our conversation, and I've been wanting to get her on my show for a while. I'm very much aware that I wouldn't have the time to do all the things I've been doing (like training for ultras) if I had children. I'm very grateful for my childfree lifestyle, but it was hard to get here. Like many of Isabel's clients, I didn't realize that childfree living was actually an option in life. You may or may not be childfree. I have many friends who are, and I know that some of my podcast listeners are as well. Childfreedom isn't about disliking children or being angry at parents. Everyone's lifestyle choices are valid. It's important for me to have these conversations because I hope to save others some of the confusion I had growing up. If you get just one thing out of this episode, I hope it's this: having children is a choice. It's not an obligation.   About Isabel Firecracker Isabel was born and raised in Colombia, and has called five countries "home" in her 30-something years. A world traveler, avid kitesurfer, and childfree intersectional feminist, Isabel is a pragmatic, no-nonsense coach for childfree women who struggle with feelings of insecurity, shame, guilt, or anger that surround their choice to not have children. She has designed her coaching programs specifically for this end: to help childfree women evolve and grow into the very best version of themselves. Isabel is a co-host of Childfree Girls, a podcast and web series that features three women in three different countries who challenge society's expectations of parenthood with no-holds-barred conversations and interviews. Isabel is also the host of The Honest Uproar podcast, a space for childfree women to gather and tell their #childfreestories. It was created to foster a stronger sense of community and to connect empowered women around the World. More recently, Isabel co-founded Nunca Madres. This community features childfree content in Spanish to raise awareness about how parenthood is a choice, and not an obligation, among the Spanish-speaking population. Website Podcast: The Honest Uproar   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn Isabel's adventures in solo travel and kitesurfing What it means to be childfree How the childfree lifestyle helped her to live an adventure-filled life The life-changing AHA moment that Isabel had when she realized she was childfree The common insecurities and limiting beliefs childfree women tend to experience How childfree women can learn to embrace their lifestyle choice   Things We Discussed My episode on The Honest Uproar podcast  Childfree Girls on Instagram   Related Episodes 367 Holly Worton ~ Finding Yourself Through Solo Travel and Outdoor Adventures (now with downloadable transcript!) 366 Joanna Hennon + Holly ~ Mid-life: Reevaluating Where You Are and Where You Want To Go (now with downloadable transcript!) 365 Holly Worton ~ How to Keep Life Simple (now with downloadable transcript!) 317 Holly Worton ~ Know Yourself: How to Answer the Question of “Where Am I Going?” (now with downloadable transcript!) 316 Holly Worton ~ Know Yourself: How to Answer the Question of “Where Am I?” (now with downloadable transcript!)   Connect With Holly Website Facebook Instagram Twitter Pinterest Google+ LinkedIn   How to Subscribe Click here to subscribe via iTunes Click here to subscribe via RSS Click here to subscribe via Stitcher   Help Spread the Word If you enjoyed this episode, please head on over to iTunes and kindly leave us a rating and a review!
