If you're like most average consumers, you're acutely aware of how your monthly energy bill has been rising steadily in recent years. And a new report from the nonprofit Energy and Policy Institute shines a bright light on one big factor behind those hikes that turns out to be very much in the utility companies' control – profits. The report is entitled “Paying for Their Profits: How Ratepayers Foot the Bill for Soaring Utility Profits” and it finds that big investor-owned utilities like Duke Energy are making a mint even as huge numbers of average ratepayers struggle mightily to keep up with their bills. And recently NC Newsline sat down with one of the report's co-authors, Energy and Policy Institute Research and Communications Manager Sue Sturgis, to learn more. Click here to listen to the full interview with Energy and Policy Institute Research and Communications Manager Sue Sturgis.
Edwin Benjamin Kaiser was a thrill-seeking patriot who became enmeshed with many of America's biggest conspiracies, the full significance of which is pieced together and explored in this exciting account by his son, Scott Kaiser. Through handwritten letters and contact book entries left by Edwin Kaiser, and a bevy of discovered government documents, an exciting puzzle forms around the life of a man who was at once a patriot, an arms smuggler, a revolutionary leader, an assassin, and a husband and father. In the 1970s Edwin was the military head of an anti-Castro movement called Cubanos Unidos, and during his life he was frequently in contact with Frank Sturgis—during which time Edwin confessed to the author an assassination plot against President Nixon and confirmed Sturgis' role in the death of JFK. This thrilling mix of paramilitary bravado, government conspiracy, family history, and firsthand anecdote shows how Edwin Kaiser was willing to lay it all on the line to accomplish what he thought was right.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
This is starting our 18th year into the cooking journey. We are based out of Sidney in Western Nebraska. I have cooked all my life and it became more of an obsession than a passion. I love to challenge myself and to learn new things. Before jumping into cooking full time I taught at the college level for 10 years and used my students to testing new ideas. Jimmy L's has a team of 13 dedicated individuals that makes magic happen across the board. We run 4 food trailers across 5 states around 60+ events during the summer months, ranging from big to small. Sturgis motor cycle rally to our local county fair, we also have a large catering operation that we run year round. We run a seasonal restaurant in the winter on Friday nights as well. We turn 10's of thousands of pounds of meat out a year, we only cook certified beef mostly from Greater Omaha and we are very well known for our brisket. We use the Herefords and the majority of those are from Nebraska so we know we are for sure cooking American beef. That allows us to bring the best product to the consumer. Our team drives Jimmy L's success, they are an amazing group of individuals that have dedicated themselves to making our company as efficient and successful as possible. We operate with a very easygoing, intense, and fun loving attitude as you probably can see from our social media accounts. I do not believe in self proclaiming that we have the best brisket or bbq, I prefer to let the Jimmy L's customers speak on our behalf and they do. We make everything from scratch and only use top quality ingredients. One of my pet peeves is people who say they are selling prime rib but serve you a choice piece of meat. Prime rib comes from a prime grade piece of meat other than that it's just a rib roast. I feel that in the BBQ world shortcuts such as this are starting to become the norm.
On today's episode, an episode from our friends at Sotheby's exploring the question: How do objects achieve iconic status? Taking inspiration from the book Icons: 100 Extraordinary Objects from Sotheby's History, published by Phaidon, the discussion explores how a work of art can transform beyond its material form to become a universal cultural image – instantly recognisable, endlessly reproduced, and symbolically charged. Joining the discussion are artist Sir Grayson Perry; Xa Sturgis, Director of the Ashmolean Museum; and Helena Newman, Chairman of Sotheby's Europe and Chairman of Impressionist & Modern Art Worldwide. This podcast was recorded at Sotheby's London in February 2026. And, to step further into the world of Sotheby's, you can visit any of our galleries around the world; they're open to the public. Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: January 7, 2026Name of Podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS10: E1: Austin Ingerman (Gunshine) - Gunshine From Sunshine StateSHOW SUMMARY:Big riffs, big hooks, zero apologies. That's the energy we chase with guitarist and songwriter Austin Ingerman of Gunshine, a Florida-born player who balances swagger with sharp songcraft. From Daytona beginnings to LA's Musicians Institute and arena tours as a hired gun, Austin shares how those miles shaped a band built for choruses you can shout and guitars that actually feel dangerous again. We talk origin stories the honest way: how a pandemic pause pushed Austin home, how early tracks came together before a singer was even in the room, and why the search for a voice with an X factor took years. When Jordan walked in from a dueling-piano bar, the chemistry clicked fast. The result is Gunshine's “swampy” identity—Southern edge, modern punch—rooted in influences like Boston, Def Leppard, AC/DC, and a touch of early GNR. The name Gunshine nods to Florida's nickname and the band's sunburned grit, not a retro costume. Songwriting sits at the center. Austin often starts with melodies and riffs captured on voice memos, while Jordan brings a Nashville-honed lyric lens and the number system to keep structures tidy. We break down “Bayou,” which began as Jordan's country-leaning sketch and morphed into a layered modern rocker with a ramping chorus. The home-studio pipeline is real: tracks built in Austin's space, files shipped to Chris Collier for mix and master, and a sound that still hits like a room full of amps. Theory helps in the background—tension, resolution, the occasional Mixolydian wink—but the rule is feel first. Grand Rising, a 13-song album, arrives with more colors: piano textures, heavier corners, and a stealth seven-string thickening the choruses without stealing the spotlight. We dig into touring momentum after a successful run through venues like the Whisky and Sturgis, plus the realities of booking while transitioning agencies. Austin's parting wisdom is pure working-musician truth: pick one job a day, finish it well, and let the songs lead everything else. If you crave straight-ahead rock with big melodies and no filler, hit play, follow Gunshine on socials, and watch for the first single on January 23. In the spring of 2019, Kelly Jean Warner quietly disappeared from contact, a pattern that didn't immediately raise concern because of her transient life and history of instability. For weeks, her absence went largely unnoticed, even as she lay dead inside a modest apartment in Sturgis, Michigan, her body deliberately hidden and her death unreported. It would take a single phone call on May 22, 2019, to trigger an investigation that exposed not only a concealed homicide, but a prolonged pattern of control, violence, and deception centered around a monster named Wade Allen. Our other podcast: "FEARFUL" - https://open.spotify.com/show/56ajNkLiPoIat1V2KI9n5c?si=OyM38rdsSSyyzKAFUJpSywMERCH:https://www.redbubble.com/people/wickedandgrim/shop?asc=uPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/wickedandgrim?fan_landing=trueYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@wickedlifeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wickedandgrim/ Instagram:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wickedandgrim/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/wickedandgrimWebsite: https://www.wickedandgrim.com/

Brittany Nichole Shank was a 23 year old from Sturgis, MI. She was a mother who was going back to school. On the night of November 30, 2018, after a car accident, Brittany knocked on a local's door, asking for help. She then walked away.
