2022 Professional Golf Year in Review This year was filled with exciting moments and memorable performances, including the emergence of LIV Golf as a major player on the tour. Their innovative approach to golfing events and sponsorships has garnered a lot of attention. One hundred and 24 words. Phil Mickelson couldn't have taken more than a minute to speak them. Writer Alan Shipnuck didn't need much more time to type or transcribe them. Beyond that, only those two men know exactly how the course of their conversation went: everything that was said, the tone and context, and if Mickelson did indeed believe, as he has contended, that he was merely talking casually off the cuff and not doing an interview with the journalist who was writing an unauthorized autobiography about him. In 22 starts, McIlroy won three times while posting 12 top-five finishes and 15 top-10s. He claimed the PGA Tour's season-long points title (the FedEx Cup) for a third time, and grabbed the DP World Tour's season-long points title (the Harry Vardon Trophy) for a fourth—but this was the first year in which he walked away with both. Along the way, McIlroy also reclaimed the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time since July 2020. He's definitely a player to watch in the coming years. Since the announcement of the inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open, there had been curiosity, and even a little apprehension, about what it might look and feel like to see 96 golfers with varying forms of adaptions perform on a stage as big as the USGA provides. In the end, the competition morphed into a three-day celebration of opportunity, diversity and unfathomable grit. It was, for so many, the most inspiring golf they had ever witnessed. Finally, we can't forget about the highly-anticipated Netflix PGA Tour documentary. What's to come is an eight-episode series that debuts early next year, and if it reaches anywhere near the dizzying heights of DTS, it will be a coup not just for Vox and Netflix, but for all the stars of the show and the sport of golf itself. A few years ago, it might have sounded hyperbolic to say that a simple documentary could transform an institution like golf. Now, we've seen what it can do for a niché sport, and we know that the so-called Netflix Effect could be seismic. All in all, it was a fantastic year for professional golf, and we can't wait to see what the future holds. Thank you for watching, and we'll see you next year for the 2023 Professional Golf Year in Review!

Welcome back to Conduct Detrimental for all your Sports Law new coverage. The Dans are back to bring you up to speed on the latest. Tua suffered a large hit and was showing signs of a concussion during last week's game, but he reentered the game. (5:10) Experts believed that he would/should not return under the concussion protocol. The NFLPA stated that they would be investigating whether the Dolphins followed proper concussion protocol. Some owners in the NFL are shifting their opinion of Dan Snyder and whether to vote him out. (15:55) We recently saw the pressure put on Robert Sarver to voluntarily sell the Suns. This could have influenced NFL owners. Sponsors can also put the pressure on Snyder, like PayPal did with Sarver. Mary Jo White is still conducting her investigation surrounding the allegations of sexual assault against Snyder, and what her investigation discovers could also lead to pressure on Snyder to sell. The issue with this recent investigation is will the NFL release the report, like the NBA did with Sarver? Phil Mickelson has removed his name from the lawsuit against the PGA. (31:45) This suit had 11 LIV golfers at one point but now only four remain. Phil was the main Plaintiff in this lawsuit, but not that LIV Golf has joined as a Plaintiff, he expressed that he no longer needed to be involved. New York Attorney General, Letitia James, has called on MLB and Apple TV+ to make it easier for consumers to watch Aaron Judge chase homerun history. (45:22) The Yankees exclusive television provider is the YES Network and AG James was asking MLB and Apple TV+ to work with YES for some sort of coverage of all the games. Apple TV+ paid MLB $85 million for coverage of MLB games, and every Friday there are games live on Apple TV+. However, so long as you have an Apple ID / Apple TV account, then the game is free to watch. Ime Udoka has been suspended for one year by the Celtics. (1:01:08) The source came from within the Celtics organization. The relationships were alleged to be consensual, but there are reports that this was much worse. *** Have a topic you want to write about? ANYONE and EVERYONE can publish for ConductDetrimental.com. August is winding down but the summer of upheaval and change in pro golf continues with the PGA Tour announcing its next move in the battle against LIV. It's a series of moves, really, dramatically re-shaping what the Tour is, who controls it, and acknowledging some truths that many have been shouting about for years. Andy and Brendan discuss the new “elevated” tour, how it will all fit into the schedule, who should get the credit (thank u Mr. Mickelson!), and if Jay Monahan and his team are the right people to implement it all going forward. They also discuss the notion that the Tour copied LIV. Rory and Tiger's new TGL project is also pondered at length, as Monday Night golf returns in a new way.

The sports stove has a few things percolating as we're into a new month. I'll serve up a high dosage of what you need as the latest episode has arrived. On deck: (4:30) Coming off of an epic MLB trade deadline, I'll dissect the blockbuster trade by San Diego bringing in Juan Soto to their ballclub. Could the Padres possibly have three players worth over a BILLION dollars in contracts at the same time? What about the Yankees and how they've added to their roster? Also, what could plague them come October? The Dodgers weren't big time players in making transactions to solidify a couple of key spots on their team. I'll break down what some of the other playoff contenders have done, go through both leagues wild card scenarios, a division battle set this weekend between the Braves & Mets. A tribute to a broadcasting legend, Vin Scully. And thoughts on the last two episodes of The Captain, the ESPN documentary on Derek Jeter, that you may find intriguing. (39:47) Deshaun Watson's suspension has finally come down to where an arbiter handed down six games for him to sit out at the start of the 2022 season. Thing is, the NFL has appealed that the suspension should be harsher. The Players Association was hoping that the league would've stood pat. Will this be a fight to the bitter end? How much will Watson get when it's all said and done? The Miami Dolphins were docked a first round draft pick next year, fined and their owner, Stephen Ross, was suspended for tampering violations against Tom Brady and former Saints coach, Sean Payton. Was this penalty warranted? (48:15) In an interview this week, Greg Norman shouted out Tiger Woods as he allegedly passed up $700-$800 million from the LIV Golf Tour. Is Tiger in the wrong for not jumping to where the money is? Speaking of LIV, Phil Mickelson, among nine other golfers. are filing an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA so they can play in the upcoming FedEx Cup Playoffs. How will the PGA handle this now and moving forward? Is it a good deal to sell out your personal integrity for cash from notorious scoundrels? Depends on your sell-out price, chortle some 48 ethically-stunted professional golfers who've peddled both their honor and honesty to the murderous moneyed monarchs who rule Saudi Arabia. The golfers, who are already millionaires, rushed to grab money thrown at their feet by the royal kingdom, which oddly thinks it can launder its public image by sponsoring a money-soaked global golf tour. Of course, a golf tournament needs golfers, but the Saudis had none, so they simply bought some. First, former stars Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman signed away their integrity to join, taking at least $200 million apiece. Then Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau took $150 million each from Team Saudi, and the likes of Brooks Koepka and Sergio Garcia quicky scrambled to get theirs. Worse than the golfers' unsightly money grubbing, however, is their insufferable dishonesty, trying to whitewash their taking of what is literally blood money. Mickelson faked moral outrage at the Kingdom's rulers, calling them “less than savory individuals” and piously proclaiming that he did not condone “human rights violations.” But he certainly has condoned (and cashed) the checks written to him by the violators. But Greg Norman, the former pro who led recruitment of golfer talent for the Saudis, offered the most pathetic moral excuse for selling out. Asked how he could link arms with a potentate so barbarous as to have had a critic of the regime murdered and chopped into pieces, Norman said: “look, we've all made mistakes.” There's a word that describes what these golfing multimillionaires are doing: “Disgusting.” The good news is that most pros – including bigger-name stars like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas – have some values that they refuse to trade for dollars.
Why is a Saudi-backed golf league throwing around impossible amounts of cash to some of the world's best golfers? It sure seems to be a bid to "sports-wash" their awful reputation on human rights. And Donald Trump is more than happy to help. Follow Kerouac at https://letterboxd.com/kafkajones/activity/ Donate to abortion funds at https://abortionfunds.org/
