There’s a quote going around on from Glennon Melton’s book, Carry On, Warrior: Thoughts on Life Unarmed and it reads: “You have been offered the gift of crisis. As Kathleen Norris reminds us, the Greek root of the word crisis is "to sift", as in, to shake out the excesses and leave only what's important. That's what crises do. They shake things up until we are forced to hold on to only what matters most. The rest falls away.”What’s left, as this week’s guest points out, can actually be joy in the slowness. Gold coast based artist Samuel Leighton-Dore is a satirical cartoonist, a painter, ceramic artist, filmmaker, a regular contributor for SBS Sexuality and author of the graphic novel 'How to be a big strong man'.Samuel has rare ability to be both light-hearted and joyful, and deep and reflective – proving that laughter can be balm for uncertain times. In this conversation, Samuel share his three-tiered approach to balancing various projects, the little things you can do to feel more disciplined working from home, toxic masculinity, the connection between ambition and depression, failure,   untangling your identity from creative success. * * *Share your refections, routines and ruts at www.extraordinaryroutines.com/surveyTo stay tuned, please subscribe or follow the podcast on your preferred listening platform and leave a review on iTunes. You can also sign up to the Extraordinary Routines newsletter, or follow along at @extraordinary_routines on Instagram. This podcast is produced, edited and mixed by Madeleine Dore using Hindenburg. (In honor of Thanksgiving, we're taking a break from the recording studio. But we didn't want to leave you podcast-less. So we're serving up a special treat: a re-broadcast of one of our most popular podcasts, my May 30, 2104 interview with author, Glennn Doyle Melton. Sit back, relax, and get ready to laugh and be inspired to see your life in a whole new way.) According to Glennon Doyle Melton, "Life's about how you use what you got." Because honesty, and "truth-telling" is her mission, she has no problem revealing how, for twenty years, she was lost to "food and booze and bad love and drugs." Annie and Glennon laugh a lot as they chat about her past addictions, her strategy for marriage and parenting ("Keep showing up") and the best way for moms to help their daughters let go of the need to be "perfect." About Glennon Doyle Melton Glennon Doyle Melton believes that part of her life's work is being an "open truth-telling presence" for people. She has taken that truth-telling to Momastery.com, the online community she founded. There, through her writing, she connects with hundreds of thousands of women around the world. Glennon is also the New York Times best selling author of "Carry On, Warrior: The power of embracing your beautiful, messy life." We are always told to avoid "toxic" people, but sometimes it's difficult to completely cut ties. This is when we learn to set boundaries. Cathy shares a metaphor she found in Glennon Melton's latest blog - the reason we can see the beauty of a tiger behind bars is that we are safe from being devoured. If we don't set up our own boundaries (bars), then we risk allowing others to take advantage of us (and we miss their beauty!). We also share the website worldpulse.com  - it allows women from all over the world to communicate with each other and transform their circumstances. At 22:00, we interview Todd's good friend Rick Williams.  Rick shares the story of his wife Trish - for the last 19 months she has been dealing with Hydrocephalus. Rick has persevered to support Trish in unbelievable ways, but they have reached an impass - recovery is possible, but insurance has run out.
