Talking To Teens
Ep 234: The Emotional Lives of Teenagers

Talking To Teens

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2023 29:14

If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Teens are dealing with a lot–impending adulthood, changing bodies, rigorous schoolwork and a complicated social scene–it's no wonder they're emotional! As parents, it can be hard to help them manage all the ups and downs, especially when teens are screaming at us or locking their bedroom doors. This week, we're talking all about teen emotions: how to help them learn coping strategies, why they might be lashing out, and what's really going on in their heads when they're making mountains out of molehills.Joining us is psychologist and author Lisa Damour, to talk about her recent book, The Emotional Lives of Teenagers: Raising Connected, Capable and Compassionate Adolescents. Lisa has been recognized as a thought leader by the American Psychological Association, cohosts the Ask Lisa podcast, writes about adolescence for the New York Times, appears as a regular contributor at CBS News, and maintains her own clinical practice! In our interview, we're talking about the two different kinds of reasoning teens apply when making a decision, gendered differences in teen's emotional coping mechanisms, and how we can connect with kids, even when it seems like they want nothing to do with us.Hot vs. Cold ReasoningIn the episode, Lisa explains how teens typically oscillate between two kinds of reasoning. Cold reasoning occurs when teens are using their logical rational mind to make a decision, while hot thinking typically refers to their thought process when they're in emotionally or socially charged situations. While they may reach one conclusion when they're using cold reasoning, that conclusion might just fly out the window when a situation gets much more emotional or social. For example, teens often tell us they're not going to drink or smoke, that they're going to stay in and study, that they're not going to waste time dating someone when they want to focus on the future. But later, when they're at a party or riding in a car with their friends or seeing their crush at a social gathering….they might not make the same choice they swore by earlier! For teens whose brains are still developing and who often make decisions based on social pressures, these two kinds of thinking often end up in conflict with one another. To make sure teens stick to their rational decisions, Lisa suggests we present them with the hot situation while they're still in a cold state of mind. Try walking them through the whole party scenario while you're alone together in the kitchen, hours before the party starts. Doing this can help ensure that your teen will still behave rationally when they're placed in an emotionally, socially charged situation.Teens don't just need strong reasoning to handle the perils of high school, they also need to know how to cope when things go awry. Lisa and I are talking about how we teens tend to fall into gendered patterns of coping, and how we can help them find more effective methods.Cultivating Better Coping MechanismsFrom a young age, kids are often conditioned to follow certain practices for emotional management, and typically these are shaped by their gender, says Lisa. Boys are taught to push through tough times by using distractions like sports, video games or work. Girls are typically taught to use their words to describe what they're going through, and are socialized to have a vocabulary to describe emotions. This leads to patterns later in life: boys acting out or hurting others to cope, girls developing conditions like depression and anxiety, Lisa explains.Boys are also often struggling with self esteem during puberty, as girls are typically developing faster. This applies to both minds and their bodies, with girls often beating boys out in the classroom as well as in sports. This can be tough on boys' self esteem, and is often the reason why they're so mean to girls. Lisa even explains that this frustration in boys can often lead to the earliest occurrences of things like sexual harassment and assault. To fix these complicated gender discrepancies, Lisa explains how we can help kids develop healthy coping mechanisms and self esteem. For boys, a sense of value in adolescence can come from doing service work or cultivating a skill. For kids of all genders, music can be a healthy way to both work through and escape from the tough feelings of teenage life. As parents, we might want to just jump in and solve problems for our kids, but Lisa explains that we've got to help them learn to manage their feelings on their own.If we want teens to learn to handle their emotions, we've got to get through to them first! Lisa and I talk in the episode about how we can connect to teens, even when they seem to want nothing to do with us.Teaching Emotional ManagementSometimes it seems like everything we do is annoying to our kids, no matter how hard we try! This is because kids are starting to develop their own brand and identity, says Lisa. They still think that we reflect on them, and therefore when we do something that contradicts the personality they've created for themselves, they're frustrated. Alternatively, they get annoyed when we do something that's similar to the brand they're trying to cultivate, because they want to separate themselves from us as much as possible! It can be endlessly frustrating to deal with this constant teen angst, but Lisa reminds us that it's not always as personal as it feels. She explains how we can provide teens with a few options: being nice to us, being polite to us or simply just having space. She explains that providing these options often prompts teens to think about what they actually want, and can help the two of you communicate instead of just bickering. In the episode, Lisa explains how we can also work on our listening skills–so when teens do decide to open up, we can be ready for them. She describes a method she often practices with her own teenage daughters, in which she plays the role of an editor and acts as though teens are reporters. Instead of interjecting while they're speaking to immediately offer up advice, she listens to their entire spiel, and then offers up her best attempt at summarizing everything they just said, like a headline. This shows teens you're listening and trying to understand, instead of just throwing advice their way.In the Episode…There's lots of great insights in this week's interview with Lisa! On top of the topics discussed above, we also talk about: Why teens need negative feelings How adolescence can heighten emotions Why teens want to talk late at night How to get teens to actually listen to your advice If you enjoyed this week's episode, you can find more from Lisa at Dr. Lisadamour.com. The Story of Jesus is the climatic chapter in God's Larger WAR Story.  After being anointed God's chosen King at His Baptism and proving His Believing Loyalty to God through His Wilderness Temptations, Jesus then begins his public ministry of proclaiming the coming Kingdom, casting out demons and healing human disease as a means of softening the battlefield. But it's through the Transfiguration which takes place on the demonic stronghold of Mt. Hermon that Jesus officially declares war on God's Cosmic Enemies.  He then begins his final journey to Jerusalem to engage in what will be the decisive Cosmic Battle.  As he publicly rides into the City as Israel's true Davidic King, he comes to do battle.  His disciples too are ready for battle, following him with swords.  Satan prepares for war by entering Judas.  The battle lines are drawn.  The ancient Serpent's head is at last about to be crushed.  Victory is in the air.  But then the unthinkable happens—or does it?  In this session we will discover that when it comes to Jesus' battle strategy, “V” stands for much more than Victory! If you would like to learn more about our mission to offer men hope and direction in a confusing world through Jesus Christ, please visit us online at www.ahm4.life

Is it possible to end gender-based violence and human trafficking in just one generation? Programs like manKINDness, a men's advocacy program at New Friends New Life in Dallas, Texas, are working to do that and much more. By addressing gender-based violence and human trafficking directly with young men, the manKINDness program is taking steps to usher in a cultural shift that reverses toxic masculinity and embraces respect. In this episode, Matt Osborne explains the enormity of the problems of human trafficking, objectification of women, pornography addiction, et al, and how educating young men to reject traditional roles of manhood like anger and violence and demand more of themselves and their peers can ensure a safer future for all.Matt Osborne has been fighting the crime of human trafficking in some form since 2006 and currently leads the New Friends New Life Men's Advocacy Group in Dallas Texas where he coordinates the activities of one hundred men in North Texas as they mobilize to take action against sex trafficking and exploitation of women and girls by raising awareness through advocacy, education and volunteerism.   Mr. Osborne served a 12-year career with the CIA and U.S. Department of State, where he worked issues related to terrorism against the homeland, illegal narcotics, organized crime and human trafficking. He regularly provided secrets and analysis to U.S. presidents, senior cabinet officials, and the National Security Council. As part of his mission to fight trafficking, Mr. Osborne has led a total of 16 undercover rescue operations that resulted in the liberation of 178 human trafficking victims and in the arrest of 55 traffickers.

Wikipedia: Toxic masculinity is a set of certain male behaviors associated with harm to society and men themselves. Traditional stereotypes of men as socially dominant, along with related traits such as misogyny and homophobia,[1] can be considered "toxic" due in part to their promotion of violence, including sexual assault and domestic violence. The violent socialization of boys often normalizes violence, such as in the saying "boys will be boys" about bullying and aggression.Carry Michaels 15 year old son encourages him to wake up and overcome this toxic energy that he has been surrounding himself with. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3 & 4: The Drive at 5: Does a new artificial sweetener called erythritol really cause heart attacks and stroke? According to Elizabeth Nolan Brown of Reason, the media may be exaggerating the results of a study published in Nature Medicine. Rich explores what motivates the media to continually scare American citizens. His conclusion: to keep people reliant upon the federal government and experts. PLUS during an interview with MSNBC's Jonathan Capehart, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff vowed to use his platform to combat “toxic masculinity.” During her Thursday press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that President Joe Biden supports Washington D.C. becoming America's 51st state. On Thursday, Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) tweeted: “A government that controls enough resources to create a virus that kills its citizens is a government that has grown too large. The US government was complicit in the creation of COVID-19.” On The View, hosts Sunny Hostin and Whoopi Goldberg blamed former President Donald Trump for the laboratory leak theory not being taken seriously initially—accusing him of pushing the theory out of “xenophobia.” According to the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), there is reason to believe that Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) improperly accepted gifts while attending the Met Gala in 2022. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has acknowledged that she made mistakes. Zeoli is preempted by Temple University basketball!

For this episode of the Sex series, we're getting some adult sex education we wished we had learned when we were younger. Specifically around messages young men received around sex, and how this now manifests with toxic masculinity which unfortunately, seeps into the bedroom. Our guest today helps us find ways we can change these sexual narratives. While not all of us are in sexual relationships with men, the reality is that the way in which men perceive their status in the bedroom affects their roles outside of the bedroom. And when toxic masculinity is driving that inner monologue, we all lose. So today we're addressing the ways this can affect us all, not only the cis hetero men in our lives.    A licensed sex coach and therapist, Cam Fraser teaches sex education for cis hetero men and their partners. As someone who has been hurt by unhealthy masculine culture, he's passionate about changing toxic masculine narratives that affect us all, and freeing men up to be the fully realized humans they are longing to be (whether they know it or not).     In this episode, Cam and Jen discuss: Ideas on how to start conversations with your partner about sex Desire discrepancies in relationships and the difference between responsive and spontaneous libido Taking responsibility for your own arousal The spectrum of intimacy inside and outside the bedroom Unhealthy sexual narratives that feed toxic masculinity * * * Thank you to our sponsors! And women are telling men that too because we all got that same story."  - Cam Fraser “Overall we see a lot of over-pathologizing, over-medicalizing of male sexuality. I think that's a real issue, but one of the major ones I see is, "Oh, I'm not man enough because I don't want sex all the time," or, "I'm not jumping my partner every five minutes, so I must be broken.” - Cam Fraser “It's important to understand. There's a difference between physical arousal and mental subjective arousal.” - Cam Fraser “I think we live in quite a sex and pleasure negative society. And so conversations around sex are still, even though we're pushing for them to be more mainstream, they're still considered quite taboo.” - Cam Fraser “Conversations around sex can be really charged. If you're able to take some of the intensity out of those conversations and take some of the seriousness out of those conversations and keep it a little bit more playful, keep it a little bit more curious and lighthearted, then that's going to serve you well.” - Cam Fraser “There is a need for men to diversify their intimacy in terms of how they get their intimacy needs met.” - Cam Fraser “It's super important to have intimacy needs met in a diverse amount of ways. Because if you don't and then you get into a relationship and your partner is the only person that you can do that with, you're putting a lot of pressure and responsibility on your own as well and that can be detrimental to a relationship.” - Cam Fraser   Cam's Links Cam's Instagram - @thecamfraser Cam's TikTok - @thecamfraser2.0 Cam's Website   Books & Resources Mentioned in This Episode Dan Savage Website  Brené Brown's episode with Jen Hatmaker Trevor Noah on Lack of Male Intimacy   Connect with Jen! Join us for part two of our episode with Doug Braun-Harvey. Doug is a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified sex therapy supervisor and certified sex therapist in San Diego. He has taught and consulted on sexuality and sexual health with Widener University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota. Doug is also the co-founder of the Harvey Institute, an international education, training, consulting, and supervision service for improving healthcare.  Good Christian (3). “I grew up in a very Christian world. And so for me to say I wasn't a Christian, took me 35 years. To be honest and open and say, no, I'm not a Christian. I do not identify as a Christian, and that was a tremendously liberating for my sexual health.” Doug shares the liberating experience of just saying I am not a Christian. This phrase can be a challenging hurdle for many people, because of the Christian central country we live in.  Deconstructing Narratives (18). “One of the things that stood out to me is also part of being a man, part of being a successful man is knowing shit. So when you're thinking, when you asked a question, what is your vision for sexual health? My initial response even was like, well, fuck, I don't know how to answer that question. And some of the shame then that comes up for me because part of the narrative around being a man for me is, well, I know the answers to things. That's how I'm successful as a man” Jeremiah opens up about the effects of toxic expectations that come from manhood and strives to redefine what being a “successful man” means and looks like, and sometimes it means not knowing all the answers.  Toxic Masculinity (23). “Toxic masculinity I think is really saying living in a male-identified body that gives you the privilege of remaining unconscious about how you move in the world and the consequences of how you live the world. I like to think about who do we ask to be more conscious or not in our society, and who must be conscious in order to live in the society and thrive, or at least not suffer horrible things” Doug covers how a majority of men do not realize their privilege, a simple thing such as walking alone at night may never be a second thought for men. He explores how many people are forced to be conscious of this out of safety.  Sexual Debut (25). “The church is a lot to say and churches have a lot to say.  Now, the example that's the most pervasive in the entire planet is the sexual debut. And the sexual debut is really a heterosexually defined experience of penile vaginal, penetrative, intercourse. And that's supposed to happen, and it only has moral value if it happens in a marital relationship that has been contracted and established. That's it. If intercourse happens anytime before that, it is not a morally correct sex act after marriage. It is. That's an example of an act-centered value system. Now, the principle-centered value system is one where you ask yourself, was it consensual? I was conscious and avoiding exploitative interactions in order to be sexual with this person. And was I aware that the person was also not exploiting me? Is there honesty?” Doug discusses the idea of the sexual debut through the Christian lens. This lens can be very damaging for those who do not fit the Christian moral standard for sex, and how that in itself can harm our views of ourselves and sex. Male Sexuality (39). “I work with some unpartnered men and they have talked about how lonely it is not to have the permission to discuss sexuality in the same way that women might, and I had one client come back to a session and he said, oh my God, I had a conversation about sex with my best friend for the first time. And it was, it was such a liberating experience for him. And I remember my own like emotions coming up in that interaction as well.” Julia opens up about a healing conversation she had with a client and how many men do not have ways to openly discuss sexuality in the same manner most women do, and how liberating that can be for men to have those avenues.

This episode is marked explicit because of language contained in soundbites and quotes from Andrew Tate. I believe it's absolutely necessary to hear the exact language to understand the totality of his dangerous message.  Andrew Tate - or “Top-G” as his legions of fans call him - has also been called the "King of Toxic Masculinity” by those who are not as easily duped. Teachers know about him and his message because they deal with it daily from “radicalized” middle and high school boys. And many teen girls and grown women know him as the guy who tells their boyfriend, classmate or co-worker that it's okay to treat women as property, to slap them around or otherwise put them in their place. You need to understand who he is, the message he's spreading, and the vile and despicable things he's been accused of doing so you can discuss it intelligently with your teens and tweens.Get ready to be shocked and baffled by his meteoric rise to one of “the most Googled men on the planet” and the #1 influencer of teens in 2022, someone who's managed to amass a fortune on the backs of trafficked women and adolescent males who willingly spread his message and increase his influence for money. This episode of the Fresh Start Family Show features the incredible Dr. Caroline Heldman - author, speaker, activist, and Executive Director of the Representation Project. Their documentaries include the wildly transformational film “The Mask You Live in.” In a society that places undue pressure on men and boys to act and behave in certain ways, there is an ever rising need to push back on limiting beliefs that hold them back from experiencing the wholeness of life.  Wendy, Terry and Dr. Heldman speak to the harmful and dangerous ideals around masculinity that society creates and why breaking those constraints down by allowing men and boys to feel all their emotions and perform duties outside the acceptable box benefits everyone. We have the responsibility and privilege to help flip the narrative around acceptable emotions and roles for our men and boys.   Tune in for more about how: 1. Traditional masculinity is harmful to boys and men.  2. Gender and gender roles are socially constructed.  3. We have the power to construct genders in ways that are beneficial to everyone.
