Somehow, Tim and May connect them all in another unfiltered episode of BS Free MD. The conversation kicks off with a nostalgic tribute to the Canadian Football League before taking a detour into bizarre climate headlines, including whether changing temperatures could threaten bird populations. From there, Tim and May dive into one of social media's hottest debates: the rise of the "trad wife." Are traditional family roles making a comeback, or has the internet turned the concept into something it was never meant to be? The hosts unpack the cultural shift, discuss why healthy partnerships don't fit neatly into internet labels, and share their own perspective on balancing careers, marriage, and family. Then it's time for one of Tim's favorite rants: cosmetic filler. From duck lips and body dysmorphia to plastic surgery trends and why saying "no" can be the best medical advice, they examine how social media and unrealistic beauty standards continue to reshape expectations. The episode wraps with an entertaining discussion on gym culture, attention-seeking fashion trends, and why confidence doesn't have to come with an exaggerated filter. As always, expect humor, strong opinions, and plenty of tangents along the way. In This Episode Why Tim still believes Canadian football is more entertaining than the NFL The surprising climate change story involving bird populations What the "trad wife" movement actually means—and what it doesn't Healthy marriages versus internet stereotypes Social media's influence on beauty standards Why facial filler can quickly go too far Body dysmorphia, cosmetic procedures, and knowing when enough is enough Gym fashion, attention, and modern fitness culture Tim's thoughts on plastic surgery versus injectable fillers A reminder that confidence doesn't come from social media trends Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Keep What You Earn
Reclaiming Your Role as a Medical Provider in a Retail-Minded Med Spa World

Keep What You Earn

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 28, 2026 20:14

Medical aesthetics is one of the few areas of healthcare where practice owners have real control over pricing. Because most services are cash pay, med spas are not waiting on insurance reimbursements or negotiating with carriers. Yet many practices give away that advantage by running constant promotions and training patients to shop for the lowest Botox price.  In this solo episode, I explain how deep discounts create margin erosion, weaken patient loyalty, and push the industry toward commoditization. I also share how stronger consultations, treatment plans, and value-based pricing can improve retention, patient experience, and clinic profitability without turning every appointment into a sales pitch. Discounts Train Patients to Wait for the Next Offer  Discounts can fill the schedule for a weekend, but they also change how patients see the practice. When every holiday comes with a coupon, patients learn that the listed price is temporary and the service is interchangeable. That is how Botox pricing and injectables start to feel like retail products instead of medical treatments.  Patients who choose a practice based only on price are also difficult to retain. They may come in for the promotion and leave as soon as another clinic advertises a better deal. You pay to acquire them, give up margin on the treatment, and still have no lasting customer relationship to show for it. Run the Numbers Before You Run the Promotion  A discount should never be approved simply because the calendar is slow or a competitor launched one. Before lowering the price, look at what the offer does to gross profit, cash flow, future capacity, and patient behavior. Promotional revenue can look impressive while the economics underneath it tell a very different story.  Calculate treatment margin after product cost, provider compensation, payment fees, and promotional spending  Measure how many discounted patients return and rebook at full price  Compare customer acquisition cost with patient lifetime value  Account for prepaid packages as future treatment obligations rather than immediate profit  Review inventory levels before promoting injectables or retail products  Determine whether the offer supports a broader treatment plan or only creates a one-time visit  Give the team clear language to explain value, outcomes, and next steps without relying on aggressive sales techniques  If the numbers only work when patients purchase more later, be honest about how often that actually happens. Upselling cannot carry the strategy when your intake, follow-up, and rebooking systems are not built to support it.  (00:05:43) Building lasting patient relationships (00:09:01) Setting confident pricing for services (00:10:40) Understanding value versus effort (00:15:21) Shifting from retail to patient focus (00:16:31) Improving client intake and planning (00:19:37) Identifying growth barriers for practices  Lead the Consultation With Medical Authority  A patient consultation should feel like clinical guidance, not a review of services and prices. Patients come to you because they want a result and need help understanding which treatments will get them there. When providers lead with patient education, set realistic expectations, and recommend a clear treatment plan, price becomes one part of the decision rather than the entire conversation.  This also creates a better patient experience. People are more likely to follow through, rebook, and trust future recommendations when they understand why the plan was created. Value-based pricing works when the practice can clearly connect its expertise, care, and treatment strategy to the outcome the patient wants. Patient Loyalty Creates More Predictable Growth  Practices that depend on promotions often see the same pattern: a rush of cash, a crowded schedule, and then another dip. That volatility makes financial management harder because staffing, inventory management, and marketing decisions are being made around short-term spikes instead of reliable demand.  A medicine-first approach creates cleaner practice growth. Strong treatment plans, consistent rebooking, and better customer retention increase patient lifetime value and make cash flow easier to forecast. Over time, that stability gives you room to improve margins, invest in your team, and expand without constantly discounting the work that built your reputation. A med spa with medical authority and loyal patients has far more control over its pricing, profitability, and future.  Follow Shannon & Keep What You Earn:   Shannon Weinstein is the founder of a fractional CFO firm specializing in helping 7-figure aesthetics and wellness practices scale with clarity, cash flow, and confidence.  Shannon is committed to helping med spa owners understand, fix, and maximize their business's enterprise value, offering actionable advice and resources, including a popular free video series specifically for aesthetics practice owners.  Connect with Shannon: Fractional CFO Services and Executive Financial Review: https://www.keepwhatyouearn.com/ Connect with Shannon: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shannonweinstein  Watch full episodes: https://www.youtube.com/@KeepWhatYouEarn  Listen on your favorite podcast app: https://pod.link/1580071347  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shannonkweinstein/  The information shared is for educational purposes only and is not individualized financial advice. Anele was getting ready for her Lotto broadcast when someone working on her face asked for advice about getting gastric bypass surgery. The woman assumed Anele had also had the procedure because of her weight loss. She says it caught her completely off guard. Now, here's the question...If someone assumes you've had surgery because of your "glow-up"... is that actually a compliment? Are they saying, "Wow, you look incredible!" Or is it an insult because they're basically saying, "There's no way you achieved that naturally." It's not just about weight-loss surgery either. People assume others have had Botox, lip fillers, veneers, hair transplants, BBLs... all because they look different. So where do you stand? The Tim Conway Jr Show Hour with Andy Riesmeyer Hour 2 (7.23) Andy is joined live by House Whisperer Dean Sharp, the KFI home designer who’s breaking down current home trends and helping people decide when it’s time to renovate. It’s all about finding your X-factor and expressing yourself through design — that’s when Dean goes to work. Is “The Big Lebowski” the greatest LA-centric movie ever made? Andy and Crozier might just agree on that one. Dean also shares a little tip on how to sound convincingly Russian, while Andy digs into how to stay current with architectural trends and which design elements actually stand the test of time. Meanwhile, LA’s famous “Graffiti Towers” skyscraper is finally getting a long-overdue scrubbing. And the TalkBacks keep rolling in with the eternal debate: is it “Eagles” or “The Eagles”? What if aging isn't the enemy—but the fear of aging is?In this episode of Transparent with Tina, Tina Marx sits down with Dr. Natalya Borakowski, a naturopath and aesthetic medicine expert, for an honest conversation about beauty, skin health, hormones, longevity, and self-worth.Dr. Natalya explains why the beauty industry has taught women to fear wrinkles, how stress and poor sleep can affect the skin, and why true beauty begins from the inside out. They also discuss Botox, microcurrent devices, red-light therapy, gua sha, microneedling, lasers, collagen supplements, peptides, and the importance of choosing treatments that support your identity instead of changing who you are. You'll also hear why Dr. Natalya believes every woman should develop a personal “mirror ritual”—one rooted in self-care, compassion, and acceptance rather than criticism. This conversation is a reminder that you are not a broken doll that needs constant fixing. You are a beautiful, living body worthy of care, support, and love at every age.

Send us Fan MailDavid Suzuki, founder and CEO of Bio-Therapeutic, explains frequency specific microcurrent: how it stimulates the mitochondria, why ATP decline drives aging, and what the clinical data shows. What is Bio-Therapeutic?A second generation, FDA registered device manufacturer founded in the 1970s by Suzuki's father, an electrical engineer who worked on Boeing missile systems before turning to the body's own electrical system. "Every function in the human body is powered by cellular energy, but the frequencies are what the commands are."How does aging relate to mitochondria and ATP?ATP production peaks in the mid 20s and declines, leaving damage unrepaired. Collagen, elastin, and circulation are all ATP driven. "What I really have when I look in the mirror is age... a collection of damage that I no longer have enough cellular energy to repair in real time."What is the difference between EMS, TENS, and microcurrent?EMS twitches muscles and above roughly 300 microamps shuts the mitochondria down. TENS controls pain without healing. Microcurrent works low. "If you're down in the more 40 to 80 microamps, that's really where the sweet zone is." A 1982 study found low microamperage can generate up to 500 times more ATP.What does the clinical data show?University of Washington studies found wound healing "sped up by nearly four times," plus a 14 percent collagen synthesis improvement, a 48 percent elasticity increase, and a 38 percent circulation increase over roughly 20 days. What order should you layer microcurrent with skincare?Cleanse, exfoliate, microcurrent, then products smallest molecule to largest. The stratum corneum is non living and non conductive. "70 to 80 percent of the products that you put on topically will get caught up in the stratum corneum and never make it to the living tissue."How much does microcurrent improve absorption?"Your electricity is going to help get much better absorption into the skin, maybe 50 to 60 percent more than if you were just topically applied," provided the skin is properly exfoliated first. Why does ingredient concentration matter? Many brands cite a study's results while dosing a fraction of the studied amount. "That is a true statement. They just left out the fact that it was a 2 percent introduction of that particular key ingredient."What pairs well with microcurrent?LED across blue, yellow, and red wavelengths, plus oxygen infusion, since the Krebs cycle is aerobic. "You start to spray that onto the surface of the skin... your mitochondria are chirping like little birds."Can you use microcurrent with Botox and fillers?Yes, with coordination and timing. "You just want to make sure that whoever your injector is, that they're aware that you're doing microcurrent." Expect a three to four week gap, longer for fillers. How is microcurrent different from microneedling or laser? Those work through controlled damage. Microcurrent upregulates what the body already does, and it moves muscle. "There's nothing else that does the sculpture of the face. And that's where microcurrent comes in."Does microcurrent fatigue your muscles? Not at proper levels. High current EMS depletes localized ATP; low level microcurrent does the opposite. "You can't really overdo it with microcurrent, but you can basically really regenerate them and make them healthy."Is microcurrent safe for the heart?Facial current stays localized between the probes. Federally required contraindications include "pacemaker, any sort of heart issues, thrombosis, phlebitis." Anyone with a heart condition or implant should clear it with their physician.Listen to the full episode with David Suzuki of Bio-Therapeutic on Skin Anarchy, available wherever you get your podcasts.Shop Bio-TherapeuticDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!*This is a paid collaborationSupport the show

In this episode, host Don sits down with Naren Arulrajah, founder and CEO of Ekwa Marketing, to dismantle the med spa playbook of cheap ads and low-price Botox deals. Naren argues that discount-first marketing doesn't just underperform, it actively damages your position in the market and fills your schedule with patients who were never going to stay. The conversation gets specific about the numbers owners are ignoring. Naren breaks down why the average practice books only one in three new patients and just one in six from ads, why organic leads cost $60 to $70 against roughly $300 for paid, and why a patient who doesn't book is a phone-handling problem rather than a marketing one. He closes with the framework he insists on with every client: build the funnel around find, like, and trust, rank for at least 100 search terms to survive Google's messy middle, and generate 10 or more paragraph reviews every month. Ads earn a place only after all three are working, as an adjunct, never the engine.

Your face doesn't have a heart pushing fluid through it. Your blood has a pump. The lymph in your face does not. So how does it move? Partly by the muscles around your eyes squeezing the vessels every time you blink, wringing fluid out like a hand on a sponge and sending it toward the drainage points at your jaw and ears overnight. Here's the part nobody mentions before the needle. The muscle numbed for crow's feet is the exact same muscle that drains your eyelids and upper cheeks all day. Soften the frown, and in some faces, you soften the drainage right along with it. Fluid that used to clear by morning starts to sit. That's the puffiness. The little bags on the cheekbone. The tired look sleep and concealer never quite fix. In this episode, Lindsey Holder, Menopause Skin Specialist and Master Esthetician, breaks down what Botox is actually made of, the 2024 lab study on lymphatic cells, the documented case of a 59-year-old whose swelling vanished on half the dose, and what a heat camera can and can't see. Then she gives you the needle-free structure: barrier first, the paper patch made the same way since 1889, and the two-minute drainage step almost everyone skips. Whether you're deciding to start Botox or wondering if you can stop, this one changes how you read your own mirror. The full written breakdown lives in this week's Skin Scholar Society on Substack. SH*T I'M 30! Podcast with Carla Wilmaris & Friends

What does 42 actually look like? According to Carla and Dex... it's acupuncture appointments, spending way too much money on skincare, arguing about hot dogs for ten minutes, refusing to go anywhere that starts after 8 PM, and finally realizing that peace is worth protecting. This birthday episode starts with laughs but quickly turns into one of those conversations that sneaks up on you. The hosts talk about aging, health, dating, friendships, boundaries, money, career decisions, and the freedom that comes from finally knowing who you are. They compare what excited them in their twenties versus what brings them joy now, debate whether dating gets easier or harder with age, and imagine what they hope life looks like forty years from now. It's funny. It's honest. And it's the kind of conversation that reminds you getting older doesn't mean becoming less you just become more yourself. In This Episode Why getting older feels more freeing than scary The wellness habits they're actually investing in now The surprising things that become exciting in your late 30s and 40s Dating standards that change with age Why boundaries get easier the older you get Spending money on health vs. spending money on everything else Career advice they wish they had followed sooner The future they're intentionally building—not just hoping for What peace looks like in this season of life Plenty of laughs about birthdays, hot dogs, Botox, and why nobody wants plans that start after 8 PM Memorable Moments The birthday conversation that turns into a reflection on aging. A hilarious debate over the "right" way to eat a hot dog. Why morning routines have become sacred. The reality of dating when you actually know what you want. Imagining life 40 years from now—and what really matters by then.     CONNECT WITH US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: CARLA WILMARIS | DEX

In this episode, I'm joined by the wonderful Olga Newman, whose unique approach to facial massage, fascia release, and breathwork completely changed my perspective on what's possible when it comes to ageing naturally. I was lucky enough to have one of her treatments before we recorded this conversation, and I honestly felt all the tension in my jaw and neck melt away. Together, we explore how years of anxiety and chronic stress can leave their mark on our faces, why shallow breathing and tension patterns matter more than we realise, and the powerful ways breathwork, fascia release, and self-massage can help us look and feel our best—without relying on Botox. If you've ever wondered how stress is showing up in your face, this episode is full of fascinating insights and practical tools. We talk about: What years of anxiety and stress look like on your face Why shallow breathing and pelvic tension so often show up together The way chronic tension (or release) can change how we age How self-massage, fascia release, and breathwork can work better than Botox Where to find Olga: Instagram: @olga_faceup

Laura Nichols never expected aesthetics to become her career. Originally from Lake Charles, Laura came to Baton Rouge to attend LSU and then spent the next decade working as an emergency room nurse before returning to school to become a nurse practitioner. Her first job as a nurse practitioner required a lengthy commute and 12-hour shifts, an arrangement Laura quickly realized wasn’t sustainable as a single mother with two children. Around the same period, Laura became fascinated by the science behind aesthetic medicine after she received a Botox treatment. She began learning injectable procedures and offering services to a small group of ten existing patients she already knew and trusted. When the pandemic disrupted her practice, Laura temporarily worked in urgent care while continuing aesthetic treatments out of a salon on the side. Over the next two years, her client base grew to roughly 200 patients. Eventually, Laura realized the business had outgrown its informal beginnings. So, in 2022, she signed a lease on her own space, and The Face Place officially opened on Perkins Road in March 2023. Now, suppose Laura doesn't want the story to end here. Suppose she has her sights set on growing her business, expanding, maybe, even into other states. Or other countries. After all, WalMart started with a single store in Arkansas. Okay, but it's not 1962. So how would Laura make a dream like that actually happen today? She might turn to a type of investor called an angel. And specifically she might turn to an organization called Gulf South Angels who specialize in investing in companies with growth potential and in helping them with guidance and expertise. Gulf South Angels ranks among the top angel investment organizations in the country in terms of both membership and capital deployment. Here in Baton Rouge the go-to Gulf South Angel to contact is Rick Bond. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. Episode 357 showcases our hosts Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal In our mini series 'The Tox Talks', we feature expert injectors who have significant experience in using botulinum toxins. These episodes explore our guests experiences using particular brands, the evolution of their injecting techniques and we get special insights into the subtle nuances of getting the best out of toxins. In Chapter 13 we review where we're at in the toxin market and what the implications are of having more choice. In Australia we've quickly moved from only three traditional choices (Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin) to seven (adding Letybo, Nuceiva, Relfydess, and Daxxify). This has resulted in clinical and commercial complexity for clinics and we delve into this new problem.  Patient demand, marketing pressures and questionable business choices have led some injectors to stock multiple brands - but maybe at the expense of reducing mastery, inconsistent results, poorer patient satisfaction and less profitability. We outline the common issues encountered when introducing new toxin brands whilst covering the business angles including inventory management, buying power, pricing, and communicating change with patients. 00:00 Introduction 00:41 Seven Toxins Overview 01:58 IA Community App Update 03:30 The Evolution Of Neurotoxins 05:01 Patient Demand And Choice 07:12 Comparing Seven Toxin Brands 11:13 Regulation And Off Label Use 13:54 Do Brand Differences Matter? 18:57 Stocking One Vs Multiple Brands 23:58 Switching Between Toxins 26:15 Preparing Patients For A Switch 31:09 Pricing, Bias And Value 32:52 Dose And Dilution Basics 35:39 Hyper Concentrated Treatments 38:06 Injection Technique And Anatomy 39:10 Business And Stock Management 44:02 Inventory And Cashflow Tips 48:52 Key Takeaways And Wrap Up DOWNLOAD OUR NEW APP IA COMMUNITY FOR FREE: DOWNLOAD FOR APPLE DEVICES DOWNLOAD FOR ANDROID DEVICES Our free content includes: Inside Aesthetics podcast - listen to or watch every episode inside the app Conference Diary - browse every major event and booking links Aesthetic News - keep up to date with the latest stories  Invites to our live stream events - RSVP for our 1st Unfiltered LIVE with Julie Bass-Kaplan here THEN GET A FREE 30 DAY SUBSCRIPTION: FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS FOR BUSINESS OWNERS/NON-CLINICAL PROFESSIONALS

They also debate whether Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding was our generation's royal wedding, make the case for a Madison Square Garden ceremony, and wonder whether Blake Lively's missing invitation got lost in the mail. Kiki delivers her official report on what's worth watching, what Bravo fans should be talking about, and which stories have taken over her feed. Plus, why was Kiki left off the RHOC premiere party guest list, and what does a two-way mirror, Marilyn Monroe, and the Kennedy brothers have to do with any of this? This week on Chins & Giggles, we're proving that growing up is just figuring things out with a little more disposable income. Karina and Mayra give the official Botox update (because yes, we're just girls), share where they're at in their ongoing home renovation journeys, and explain why they're fully embracing their Pinterest era one mood board at a time. The conversation gets real as they dive into friendship etiquette: Is it weird to mix friend groups? Why does introducing your friends feel like hosting a social experiment? And why is making friends as an adult somehow harder than finding a contractor who actually shows up on time? From beauty treatments to home projects to navigating modern friendships, it's a relatable chat about building the life (and community) you want in your 30s. Grab your coffee, your Pinterest board, and your bestie because this one's all about friendship, fresh starts, and figuring it out as we go.
