In this episode of On Boards, hosts Joe Ayoub and Raza Shaikh welcome Lynn Clarke, an experienced leader in family board governance who has served on more than a dozen family and private equity-backed boards including as an independent chair and lead director. Lynn is also a strategic advisor and mentor and has served on boards spanning from beverage and food services to e-commerce and manufacturing. Lynn has mentored next generation board members and leaders throughout her career and was named the Private Company Director of the Year by National Association of Corporate Directors in 2022. She also serves as one of three judges for Deloitte's best managed private company awards program. Key Takeaways 1. Interviewing for a board role With years of experience serving on boards, Lynn advises aspiring board members to carry a passion for the business, its products and what the company does. It's important to understand why you want to serve on a board, what value you add and what new perspectives you believe you will bring. She advises to make these points clear when you are interviewing for a board seat. 2. New boards vs. existing boards Newly formed boards offer a unique opportunity to build the culture, rhythm, and structure of governance from the ground up, but its success is dependent on the principal shareholder(s), who will define the culture of the board and company. Shareholders set the tone. 3. Knowing when it's time to leave a board or offboard a member Having the self-awareness is key to knowing when it's time to leave. Lynn suggests asking yourself, “am I still a good fit?” and “do I like what I'm doing on this board?”, “Am I enjoying the discussions at the board meeting?”, “Do I feel as though I am contributing to the growth of the company?” If the answers are no, maybe you need to consider stepping out. Offboarding a member is one of the challenging aspects of board governance, especially in close-knit or long-tenured groups. It requires direct but respectful conversations from the lead director, board chair, or governance chair. Whether a board member is being asked to leave due to performance issues or company changes, Lynn recommends treating it like a celebration and acknowledgement of the person's service on the board, almost like a retirement. 4. Board evaluations make it easier to provide ongoing feedback Even private and early-stage boards benefit from formal assessments. Annual board effectiveness and peer evaluations help surface underlying issues in board dynamics and performance. Peer evaluations can be sensitive for company boards, so Lynn suggests introducing different types of evaluations in parts. Quotes “ABARTA Coca-Cola was one of the first family-owned businesses I know to really think about independent governance. There were a majority of independent directors on a board, had a high quality strategic plan that is really a living, breathing document and a good family council or an ownership council. Those are the three things that take a business from Gen 1 or 2 into 3, 4, 5, 6, and beyond.” ”I take my commitments to the companies and the families that I work with 100% seriously the same way that I did in running a company or working for a Fortune 50. When you join a board, you are committed to that organization. You're a fiduciary. Why would you do this unless you really wanted to help make an impact, and the only way you can make an impact is to take what you do seriously.” ”The first thing you need to think about when you've been approached about joining a board: can I really make a contribution? I also think passion for the business is really important, passion for the product, the service and what the company does is really important.” “ It's important when you're on a newly formed board to think about what you know from boards that have been around for a while, and how you apply those learnings to help support the formation and the development of the new board.” “Do I enjoy the conversations? Am I feeling like it's a good fit?” And no matter how many years you've been on the board “do you like what you're doing?" Good morning, everyone! In today's episode, I shared a profound realization I had during my morning walk. Despite the rain, I found myself deeply grateful for the simple invention of the umbrella, which led me down a rabbit hole of thoughts about gratitude for everyday items and experiences. I discussed how ordinary events, like making a smoothie, can foster gratitude and happiness. By dissecting the components of my smoothie, I realized the immense journey each ingredient takes to reach me, from the blueberries sourced from Maine to the Vitamix blender and the electricity that powers it. This reflection made me appreciate the interconnectedness of everything in my life. I also shared personal anecdotes from my time deployed and a missionary trip to rural Africa, highlighting how these experiences taught me to appreciate simple luxuries like showers. These moments of gratitude have helped me cultivate a mindset of contentment and joy. I emphasized the importance of using daily practices to foster gratitude, which in turn enhances life satisfaction, emotional resilience, and positive relationships. By shifting our focus to the positive and being present in the moment, we can find happiness in the simplest of things. I encouraged listeners to experiment with acts of kindness and mindfulness, such as allowing someone ahead in line or paying for a stranger's coffee, without expecting anything in return. These small actions can promote a sense of abundance and joy. Lastly, I updated everyone on my well-being challenge, sharing my progress with step counts, journaling, and reflections. I am excited to see how this journey unfolds over the next 30 days. Thank you all for being here and allowing me to share this time with you. I hope you find these insights helpful and that they bring more happiness and gratitude into your lives. “I definitely don't know if I would have done it if I knew how difficult it was back then. But here we are, living to tell the tale,” says Jash Mehta, co-founder of Pop & Bottle, as she shares how she and her co-founder, Blair Hardy, started the company inspired by California's farm-to-table culture and a commitment to plant-based eating. From humble beginnings with a Vitamix in a small kitchen, they created dairy-free, no refined sugar, and organic beverages. Despite lacking a food and beverage background, their passion for clean living led them to craft products free from additives and preservatives, setting Pop & Bottle apart in the market.Strategic marketing, eye-catching packaging, and partnerships with local tech and food delivery services helped them gain traction. Securing a spot in Whole Foods was a pivotal moment, validating their efforts and allowing them to scale.Jash emphasizes the importance of community support, trusting one's intuition, and being resourceful. She shares their future goals for Pop & Bottle, including expanding their product line and becoming a household name in the organic beverage market. This episode of Dear FoundHer… explores how two friends turned their passion into a successful business, navigating the food and beverage industry with resilience and innovation.Quotes“We wanted to be organic certified. That was really important to us because we believe in our coffee and tea being organic. So we had to go through organic regulation, get certified, and do all of that. But again, what did that teach us? It taught us everything about supply chain and sourcing, and we've carried that knowledge forward as we've built the brand.” (17:30 | Jash Mehta)“We sold ourselves and our story as much as we sold the product.” (27:45 | Jash Mehta) “Don't let this be a lonely journey. Find community. And don't let anybody tell you or define the rules of your company or your business. Finding that inner voice as you balance out all of those outer voices is really, really important.” (43:39 | Jash Mehta)Connect with Jash Mehta:Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/popandbottleGrab Lindsay's Partnership Blueprint for Small Business: https://stan.store/lindsaypinchuk/p/get-your-ebook-now-the-partnership-blueprintConnect with Lindsay Pinchuk and Dear FoundHer.http://www.instagram.com/lindsaypinchukhttp://www.instagram.com/dearfoundherGrab Lindsay's JumpStart Your Business Blueprint:https://lindsaypinchuk.myflodesk.com/11stepsforbusinessIf you like what you're hearing, please leave a rating or review at: https://ratethispodcast.com/dearfoundherIf you know a FoundHer... we should meet, please tell her to share her story with us here.https://form.jotform.com/230008245758152Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm Hosted on Acast. In episode 219, Prep Dish founder Allison Schaaf continues the meal prep basics series by addressing a common question: what's better to have in your kitchen - a blender or food processor? Though Allison does have both tools in her kitchen, she advises that just having either a blender or a food processor is necessary. But which one to choose? A lot depends on what you'll be whipping up in the kitchen. Blenders work best for recipes with mostly liquid ingredients. If you're mixing up smoothies, marinades, dressings, homemade nut milk, or soups, then a blender is the way to go. Pro chef tip: elevate your simple salad dressing recipes with a stick (hand) blender. It makes all the difference in taste and texture! A food processor is the kitchen tool of choice for making energy bites, thicker pesto or dressings with herbs, homemade flours, or in baking recipes such as when making a crust. Head over to our Facebook group and weigh in on which kitchen tool is in your meal prep space - we'd love to hear from you! We're always so impressed when we hear about scrappy female founders starting off making a product from their homes and then growing it into a multi-million dollar business. So, how did they do it? Did they always dream of starting something bigger or did it take time for them to realize that their humble idea could really scale? And do the skills it takes to run a small business translate to running one with many employees, where the day-to-day tasks are wildly different? Starr Edwards is one of those founders. In 2010, she was looking for creative ways to provide for her young family, and with just $200 and a used Vitamix, she started selling her dips, with the clever name – Btichin' Sauce, at the San Diego Farmer's Market. Today, they are a 50 million dollar business, and their vegan almond dip is sold just about everywhere from Costo to Whole Foods. Edwards shares how she scaled while raising a family of five, and what she learned when she shipped the sauce to Colorado (hint: it got messy!) Takeaways: Starting small and scaling organically can lead to significant growth over time. Learning from peers and industry experts can be invaluable in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship. Maintaining a personal connection to the brand and product can drive passion and success. Providing childcare as a benefit can have a significant positive impact on employees and the company as a whole. Finding the right fit for team members and harnessing their talents can lead to greater fulfillment and value for the company. From Dr. Shah: I have been a retired primary care physician, vegan ( plant-based ) for 22 + years. I became a self-taught Vegan, inspired by seeing a lion on an African Safari, realizing that a simple choiceless life in a jungle is the healthiest way to live life Vs. the so-called civilized life offering a multitude of choices but in exchange bringing us hordes of diseases - physical and mental. Also, being on a spiritual path, and meditating regularly, made me realize the atrocities committed on innocent animals, the worst of them being artificial insemination, which if looked at from a spiritual angle is nothing but rape of the cows. Further research made me realize that animals are the main source of cholesterol in our diet, making a vegan diet the best approach before going onto any medications. I applied this in my professional life and thousands of patients benefited from a Vegan lifestyle, by reversing their high cholesterol levels, diabetes, and Obesity. Also, being environmentally conscious, studying "Rule of 10" made me realize that the animal industry is a major culprit in deforestation and global warming. I have been a President and now a Medical Director of a vegan society - World Vegan Vision. I am not just a physician proposing a Plant-based diet, I have been a patient too. I had a major heart attack within six months after I went on a plant-based diet. I survived the heart attack and it made me an even stronger believer in a plant-based diet. I increased my exercise significantly and ran my first marathon on the anniversary of my heart attack. After that, I ran five more marathons, lost 23 lbs, and never looked back on the heart disease again. Now, nearly 24 years after my heart attack, I can say that I have defeated my heart disease. A lot of South Asians are very prone to heart disease and diabetes. This can be a great inspiration for them." The significance of maintaining a healthy diet extends beyond mere physical nourishment; it impacts every aspect of one's life, from energy levels to mood and overall quality of life. By reducing the intake of processed foods high in sugars, unhealthy fats, and additives, individuals can lower their risk of developing these health issues and improve their overall longevity. Join us as Nicole delves into the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle and prioritizing nutritious food choices. From the meticulous sourcing of high-quality ingredients to the preparation of dishes free from harmful additives, Nicole demonstrates how The Well embodies a commitment to promoting health from the inside out with a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of food. Healthy Eating and Gluten-Free Options in a Restaurant Setting Nicole had always been immersed in the service industry, growing up in her family's long-standing restaurant business, yet initially uncertain about making it her lifelong career. However, she found herself deeply drawn to the daily interactions, the sense of community, and the joy of being around people. It was this passion for connection that fueled her desire to create something truly unique in the dining landscape. The inspiration behind their restaurant concept stemmed from a simple yet profound question: Why should people have to choose between eating well and dining out? She thought it didn't make sense that eating out often meant giving up healthy options. So, they decided to create a restaurant where people could enjoy dining out without compromising on nutritious food. Collaborating with a renowned nutrition consultant named Liv, they embarked on a journey to redefine the standards of restaurant dining. Liv's expertise guided them in curating a menu that not only prioritized nutrient density but also celebrated bold flavors and vibrant ingredients. Together, they meticulously crafted dishes that combined healthfulness with culinary excellence, setting a new benchmark for their brand. They also teamed up with designers to make sure the restaurant felt inviting and lively, breaking away from the typical look of health-focused places. They wanted it to be a spot where people could come for anything, whether it's grabbing a smoothie after a workout or celebrating a special occasion, and feel comfortable. Through their dedication to quality, community, and holistic well-being, they aimed to redefine the very essence of dining out, one nourishing meal at a time. Discovering the Healthy and Delicious Menu of The Well Personally, I've been avoiding gluten because I'm gluten-sensitive. As for my family, it has already been almost a decade of eating gluten-free. And yet, we still struggle to find real gluten-free food amidst all the processed "gluten-free" products. Thankfully, I discovered The Well during a late meeting at another restaurant nearby. Intrigued by its promise of health-conscious dining, I quickly became a regular, even gifting my patients with cards to enjoy meals there. The Well's menu philosophy was simple: stick to the basics and focus on real, whole foods. Free from gluten, dairy, soy, seed oils, GMOs, and refined sugars, their dishes were carefully crafted to prioritize quality and nutrition. Also, they prioritize sourcing their ingredients organically to ensure that their patrons are not exposed to potentially harmful pesticides. And so, they specifically avoid using non-organic versions of the produce items listed on the Dirty Dozen list as compiled by the Environmental Working Group, which identifies produce items with the highest pesticide contamination levels. One of the standout items for me at The Well is undoubtedly the bone broth, and it's not just because of its exceptional taste. This hearty broth has earned its place as a favorite among patrons, thanks to its unique preparation method and undeniable quality. Made from high-quality bones, carefully selected and simmered overnight, it's a labor of love that infuses every sip with rich flavor and nourishing goodness. According to Nicole, they use a large emulsifier to blend the ingredients, ensuring that all the essential nutrients, including collagen, are retained. Each order is then ladled out and blended again in a Vitamix blender to achieve a smooth and frothy texture, resulting in a delicious and nourishing beverage. Whether enjoyed on its own or incorporated into other dishes, The Well's bone broth is a testament to their commitment to providing not just delicious, but also wholesome options for their guests. More of Nicole's personal favorites on the menu are the roasted beet salad, salmon, and chicken bone broth. She also loves and recommends the chilaquiles, which she describes as uniquely flavorful and perfect for breakfast. Healthy Eating and Menu Options at a Restaurant At The Well, they're all about redefining healthy eating with flavorful and diverse options, ensuring wholesome food doesn't mean sacrificing taste. Their menu has evolved, embracing local brands like Cha Cha! Foods for tortillas and it's all good for gluten-free bread in sandwiches. One of their favorites is the chicken salad sandwich which is a lunchtime delight. Recently, they've introduced new dishes like coconut curry squash and organic brown rice pasta, catering to families seeking both nutrition and flavor. Their focus on kid-friendly choices reflects their commitment to creating a welcoming environment for families, recognizing the importance of early exposure to savory foods over sugary items. Their dedication to providing nutritious options extends to their beverage offerings as well. Despite offering a full bar, they prioritize using natural sweeteners like maple syrup and local honey, ensuring that even indulgences like cocktails are made with quality, homemade ingredients. This holistic approach underscores their mission to offer delicious yet wholesome dining experiences for all their patrons. Healthy Local Restaurant in Austin, Texas The atmosphere at The Well reminds me of dining in Spain, where quality ingredients, diverse menu options, and a relaxed ambiance come together seamlessly. With outdoor seating available at both locations, patrons can enjoy the pleasant Austin weather while savoring their meals. The restaurant has garnered a loyal following, with many patrons becoming regulars. Reflecting on her European heritage, particularly her family's Greek roots, Nicole sees similarities with the focus on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and simple, flavorful cooking. The goal at The Well is not to reinvent the wheel but to return to the basics of nourishing, wholesome food that promotes overall well-being. Like in European villages with abundant quality ingredients, The Well focuses on preparing dishes that optimize health without sacrificing taste. The commitment to sourcing high-quality ingredients and preparing food without harmful additives like seed oils and gluten resonates strongly with the community. Nicole and her husband, rooted in the local community with their two young daughters, are dedicated to providing an optimal dining experience that promotes both physical and mental well-being. For those looking to visit The Well, you may visit them from these locations: 2nd Street, Westlake, and Studio 3. This accessibility ensures patrons can enjoy nutritious, inflammation-friendly meals wherever they are. There's an interesting dichotomy baked into the act of composing. Although the music that composers write reflects their own thoughts, emotions, and perspectives, they need to hand that music over to other people to bring it to life. But for Andrew Bennett, a Canadian composer of experimental electronic music who records under the moniker Factor Eight, his own voice is the driving force behind his 2022 album, II. Although that was never Bennett's plan for the album — it proved to be a creative breakthrough. "Throughout the creation of that record, I was also trying to create a sound that was entirely my own, something that felt more authentically me," Bennett says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "I didn't really set out to create music using only my voice, but when I look back it's sort of serendipitous that these things happened in tandem. There's a parallel in the album between my artistic sound and my personal story behind the record." By manipulating the vocals using a raft of technologies, he created a vast, mystical soundscape that's profoundly personal to Bennett. The new album became an avenue for revealing his struggles with mental illness and raising awareness of the stigma around bipolar disorder. Mental health advocacy has always been part of Bennett's mission as an artist, and he is donating proceeds from digital sales of II to the Canadian Mental Health Association Saskatoon. In this episode, Bennett and I talk more about the creation of the album, and how the process inspired him to continue using his voice as the primary canvas for his music. Plus, he shares how the act of collaboration fuels his creativity, why a Vitamix blender is the most important gadget in his kitchen, and the importance of the visual arts in his sound-based work.Listen to II on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, or wherever you stream or download music. — Classical Post® is a leading podcast based in New York. From Cheri: My path to SOS started with my Seventh-day Adventist family which had a dairy farm in Tillamook, Oregon. My grandparents had 100 dairy cows and at 10 years old I stayed with them one summer and the following school year. I learned all of the cows names and numbers and helped with all of the chores including feeding the baby calves. It was very hard work. I feel fortunate that I had that experience and at the time eating dairy was accepted in the SDA community. As I grew, I was very interested in health matters and as valedictorian of my 8th grade class, my whole address centered around health. Sometime in high school, I heard a lecture about the hazards of sugar and refused to eat anything containing sugar. That lasted until the cultural influences at college made me stray into Pleasure Trap eating. My mother has always been an adventurous cook, and I slowly followed in her footsteps. Our culture is obsessed with food, and I am no exception. I have been Vegan and evan Raw Vegan in the last 30 years. As the various ‘experts' have made their proclamations about food, I accepted the contradictory notion that clean animal products were healthy. As I embraced more meat, butter and eggs, my cholesterol climbed to 314. I started to cut back on the cheese, but only got into the 200's. My very active grandfather died suddenly of a massive heart attack at age 66, so I became concerned. Additionally, my A1C was creeping up, and my father had had Diabetes, so these factors weighed heavily on my mind. Sometime in the summer of 2022, I saw Chef AJ on the Rich Roll podcast, and the notion of food addiction really resonated with me. SOS-free was a foreign concept and it took a few months for me to wean myself away from eggs and cheese, but I was able to go SOS-free on October 31, 2022. Within six weeks my labs were all within normal limits! I just want to share a few of the recipes that helped keep me on the WFPB path without feeling deprived BEET HUMMUS 2 Cans No Salt Garbonzo beans or 3 ½ cups cooked in the Instant Pot 16 to 20 oz steamed beets with skins slipped off 2 Lemons, zested & juiced 1 clove garlic ¼ cup White wine vinegar ½ teaspoon ground Cayenne Pepper 2 Tablespoons Tahini, optional Blend in Vita Mix DIVINE PICKLED BEETS 1 to 2 pounds steamed beets with the skins slipped off, slice with wavy slicer or as desired. The Black Vegan Experience is a multicultural educational conference, celebration of African-American ancestry and networking event that was born in November 2019 during a Vitamix demonstration and conversation between a Vegan Teacher, Vegan Nurse, Vegan Nutritionist and Naturopathic Physician. With so many plant-based conferences hosted across the US and locally, there was still little diversity established in most of these medical conferences. This Vegan Quartet sang a new song, one where Black professionals and practitioners would create an educational conference of their own, to address the medical concerns in the Black community and remove the stereotypes attached to Veganism and Black culture. Contributors to this original conversation would go on to form the Committee of Consciousness who have collaborated to host the inaugural event, originally scheduled to debut March 14, 2020, on the rescheduled date of May 15, 2021. Committee of Consciousness is a newly formed non-profit organization that strives to empower others through education. A percentage of the proceeds from The Black Vegan Experience will go to Committee of Consciousness' organization to fund building the knowledge base of plant-based nutrition, meal planning, budgeting and related nutrition services in local communities. Executive Director and Event Coordinator, Vonettia Calloway says, “When we know better, we do better.” She and her fellow COC members believe educating others empowers them to make informed choices in addition to helping us all hold each other accountable to higher standards of self-care and caring for Earth. COC plans to partner with other organizations on projects that eradicate food deserts and grant access to healthy food for all. By the end of 2021, COC believes they will be able to provide transportation for families needing this service, one-to-one and group nutrition consultations, referrals to affordable health care and health & wellness workshops within the community. The Black Vegan Experience, will be a community event, where our keynote speaker, Dr. Milton Mills, from documentaries “What the Health?” and “The Invisible Vegan” (along with producer Jasmine Leyva) will enlighten you on plant-based living, with tentative virtual appearances from Tabitha Brown, other guests, Food, Fun and Fuel for a Vegan Soul…and the Veg-curious of course=) Location: Outside The Flying Squirrels Stadium at 3001 N. Speak English Now Podcast: Learn English | Speak English without grammar.
Transcript: I'd like to include some food and cooking vocabulary in this episode. Get the transcript on my website: Speakenglishpodcast.com/podcast/ And with a mini-story, you will improve your English fluency. You'll see, it's like having a conversation with another person. You know, when I enter the kitchen, my first thought is… Why am I here? Yeah. I'm hungry. That's why. Now I remember. :) I open the refrigerator and start scanning for some delicious food. Since I don't buy ready-made food, I usually stare at the fridge for some minutes until it starts beeping. Then I close it and open it again to continue scanning. And I'm not saying my refrigerator isn't well organized; it's just that I'm looking for something I can prepare in 1 minute, preferably even less. Many times, I end up making a green smoothie. That's a fast and easy way of getting all the needed nutrients. And plus, smoothies are delicious. By the way, a smoothie is a thick drink that you can make using fruits, vegetables, greens, seeds, milk, ice, etc. As I said earlier, I typically end up making a green smoothie. Don't panic. It's green but really yummy. I add some water or milk, one avocado, 1/2 cup of pineapple, 1/2 frozen banana, 2 cups of spinach, and 1/2 cup of ice cubes. I put it at speed 10 for 45 seconds, and the smoothie is ready. Delicious! In case you were wondering, I use a Vitamix blender to prepare my smoothies. And I don't use it only for that. I also make frozen desserts with it, soups, I can make flours with it, almond milk, batters, dough, nut butter, juices, dips, etc. It's very versatile. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a6nfG69c9gI read and hear all the time about how we all should do certain things when we reach a certain age. If not, we are being irresponsible…It starts really young: get your baby vaccinations- a LOT of vaccinations, all at once! (NOT a good idea. much better to space them out over years, and even better to pick and choose amongst the many pushed.). For instance: flu vaccine and coronavirus for babies?? Terrible idea!As for the dozen or so usually pushed for infants, I would explore which ones are really necessary! (Recommendations change, but the number of vaccinesalways goes- UP!). If you or yours has a new baby, research this. All vaccines are definitely NOT your baby's friend. Now, I am not at the infant care level anymore, although I am soon to become a grandfather yet again. (Hurray!) My daughter knows all about appropriate, and non-appropriate vaccines… But let me say here- if you give your infant the flu vaccine and the coronavirus vaccine , among others at that early age- you are doing the wrong thing! Don't.I am 71 now, and mainly concerned with my own health and fitness. Aside from my overall very healthy, paleo and largely meat and dairy based diet, ample sleep, and daily workout schedule, am sure to NOT take any prescription drugs. I also have a daily smoothie, prepared in my Vitamix, of kefir, tart black cherry juice, citrus, including an organic unpeeled lemon, cruciferous veggies, apple cider vinegar, nutritional yeast of B vitamins, cod liver oil, ginger, turmeric, and current garden veggies I am harvesting in season. My goals have not changed since in my early twenties. I strive to get stronger (not just maintain), and in some ways I still am! Having muscular endurance is crucial as well, but it is the truth that you don't get continually stronger over the decades, no matter what you do!But is you look into Ben Patrick's kneesovertoesguy.comOn YouTube. Endless helpful videos and demonstrations of how top cure your knees, along with feet, back, and most of the rest of your physical body! Trust me: you can restore injured and even badly deteriorated joints with determined exercise and stretching, always doing such well within your limits and gradually progressing! Here is how my own journey plays into all of this. I took a bad fall onto concrete pavers a few weeks ago. I broke my fall with my left hand, and my left shoulder was injured pretty badly, along with the tendon on my left knee. Ouch! So, I have been doing daily therapy over my whole body, using virtual resistance by flexing the muscles and tendons just to the point where it does not hurt badly. A little pain, but more therapeutic than anything. The worst thing I could have done? Go to the clinic, take pain pills, and do nothing, except schedule surgeries and more prescriptions. I didn't do that, and now I am definitely on the mend. The pain is manageable, after I do my morning exercises. About an hour's worth, just as I always do, but now gentler, and more focussed on the problem areas…So, the point is this- just keep on striving, to get stronger and more flexible and vital. The rules never change- they just sometimes need alterations given circumstances. Just never give up, and do it all yourself, researching and getting advice where you can. Like from Ben Patrick, who athletes love and medical doctors hate!

You are going to love today's guest—my friend and a true Midwesterner, Leah Brink has lived in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, and for nearly 20 years, she's called Brookings, South Dakota home. She's the kind of person who brings the fun to a party. It was her idea to start our show making strawberry daiquiris in my kitchen, and I certainly didn't argue with that! She speaks frankly about the influence her mom had on her philosophy regarding food, and how her short-lived rebellion led to her own goal of fitting more fruits and vegetables into her and her family's lifestyle, in more of a lifelong, enthusiastic way. But don't worry. Along with the nutrient-packed smoothies Leah starts her day with, and the salsa, soup, Caesar dressing, bean dip, and hummus she makes in her Vitamix blender, we still talk about Cajun cream sauce, chicken alfredo, decadent fudge, and Taco John's. See her recipes on this post on randomsweets.com. Leah is a second-generation South Dakota State University alum, with her daughter, Maddie, a junior SDSU Political Science major with a goal to attend law school. Her son, David, will graduate Brookings High School in 2024, so she has one year left of being a busy baseball and hockey mom. Leah has spent her professional life in a variety of careers, from property management and owning and operating a restaurant, to international services which gave her the opportunity to travel to London 15 times, to corporate recruiting, and most recently, a marketing and training executive. But she doesn't limit herself to whatever her current job role is. Leah commits to understanding her community and using her skills to play a part in it, like serving on countless boards and commissions, performing as her church's pianist and organist for 14 years, plus, she served three years as an elected city councilor. She's one of the smartest, polished, and energetic people I know, yet, she humbly champions for her family, friends, and community of entrepreneurs. Leah loves being a South Dakotan, and she cherishes her childhood memories of picking potatoes, and tending to the raspberries and strawberries at her grandma's farm in rural Trent. Leah shared her recipes for good greens smoothies and strawberry daiquiris, and photos of her family and her Vitamix blender creations so while you're listening to this episode, visit randomsweets.com. This episode is not sponsored or endorsed by Vita-Mix Corporation. But just like friends chat about stuff that makes our lives easier, and more fun and meaningful, I'm excited to hear all about Leah's experience with her new blender—as she says, “the kitchen tool I never knew I needed.” Vitamix Pro 750 Heritage Series (affiliate link) Biscuit Love Recipes: https://randomsweets.com/leahs-vitamix-strawberry-daiquiris-and-good-greens-smoothies/ Website: randomsweets.com Instagram: @potatoesandmittens Instagram: @randomsweets Facebook: Random Sweets --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/potatoesandmittens/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/potatoesandmittens/support

Hello, and welcome to the Smoothie Cafe! We are here traditionally discussing health and fitness from a Paleo Diet point of view. A smoothie, made preferably in a Vitamix, is key to maximizing your nutritional density intake, and that is still my belief. But as in anything looked at honestly for a while, say 10 years or more as it is here, new facts come in, and opinions alter…As it is in life! When you are young, say in your teens and twenties, you are rightly concerned with getting started in life. You want to be strong and healthy, but much of it is to attract and establish a life with a like-minded mate. This is right and natural.Much of your youth is fixated on finding the proper path (job), and the right place to live, and raise a family. Traditionally, this was just on finding a place to live near your job, that was safe and with good schools, etc. But, with the advance of Democratic socialism/liberalism, this has been perverted. Now, you need to find a place that is not contaminated by ‘wokeism' and liberalism, which can transform a city or area into a place where:1. Crime is not punished, and criminals run free. (This includes nowadays all blue, democrat-run liberal cities, which are virtually ALL big cities!)2. Schools are teaching nonsense and anti-civilization like ‘Whites are evil', ‘White Privilege', and other aspects of Critical Race Theory, which is total poison and a total lie.3. ‘Trans' and other Woke garbage. LGBTQ and all the rest of anti-civilization garbage. It's hard to believe to me, who grew up in the 1950's, that we are even talking about such disgusting craziness, and that young people have to deal with and process this crap. But it is there today, sadly!I am now officially old- 71. I have grandchildren! While I still am very concerned with health and wellness, and am very much still a ‘physical culturist' (NOT a bodybuilder), I realize at this stage that the health of our country, state, and nation is just as important to the future. And, even though myself, wife and family are all fit and healthy, side-stepping most ‘big medicine' misdirections, such as in covid vaccines and statin prescriptions, much of our population and so-called leaders are still very misinformed and are ‘loose cannons' of bad information and direction! Here are my conclusions: If you are older, like me- work out daily! Do stretching and ‘virtual resistance' training, in front of the TV, every morning first thing. 30 minutes to an hour; you will enjoy it! Also, work out with resistance training like pushups, especially on gymnastic rings, and work your whole body. Do rows and pullups, situps and squats and deadlifts. At least two times per week, forever. Don't ever stop. And this, for every age: Work out- same prescription! From 12- 112. Walk in your daily life, best is barefoot in the woods, on the grass. Sleep at least 8 hours per night, in total darkness- banish TV's and other screens from your bedroom. Blackout curtains and white noise can help, if you haven't taken my other advice, and gotten the HELL out of big cities and suburbs with blue light and noise coming from everywhere! If you are younger, with a young family or planning on one- Get out of big cities! Get our of big suburbs, in metropolitan areas (They are all liberal/blue/socialist/communistic). Get Out Now! It may not be possible in future!Make sure you are in a red state, or at least purple one. And go rural; small towns are better than larger, small cities are much better than large, and so it goes. Speak English Now Podcast: Learn English | Speak English without grammar.
Hi, everybody! I am Georgiana, your English teacher and founder of SpeakEnglishPodcast.com. My mission is to help you speak English fluently. In this episode, I'd like to include some food and cooking vocabulary. And with a mini-story, you will improve your English fluency. You'll see, it's like having a conversation with another person. You know, when I enter the kitchen, the first thought that I have is… Why am I here? Yeah. I'm hungry. That's why. Now I remember. :) I open the refrigerator and start scanning for some delicious food. Since I don't buy ready-made food, I usually stare at the fridge for some minutes until it starts beeping. Then I close it and open it again to continue scanning. And I'm not saying my refrigerator isn't well organized; it's just that I'm looking for something that I can prepare in 1 minute, or preferably even less. Many times, I end up making a green smoothie. That's a fast and easy way of getting all the needed nutrients. And plus, smoothies are delicious. By the way, a smoothie is a thick drink that you can make using fruits, vegetables, greens, seeds, milk, ice, etc. Like I said earlier, I usually end up making a green smoothie. Delicious! By the way, in case you were wondering, I use a Vitamix blender to prepare my smoothies. And I don't use it only for that. I also make frozen desserts with it, soups, I can make flours with it, almond milk, batters, dough, nut butter, juices, dips, etc. It's very versatile. Whenever I'm not in the mood for a smoothie, and I want to eat healthy and fast, I use a pressure cooker or a frying pan. A frying pan is simply a metal pan with a handle that we use for frying foods. A pressure cooker is an airtight pot where the food is cooked quickly under steam pressure. I love using a pressure cooker because whatever I throw into the pot comes out delicious. I'm not here to promote any brands, but I'm really happy with my Instant pot cooker. The Instant Pot is not only a pressure cooker. It's multi-functional, and I use it all the time. I even bought one for my mom, and she loves it! And you know what I like using it for? For making yogurt. Yes! I started making yogurt, and it was super simple and just delightful. I also use this machine for cooking rice, pasta, potatoes; you can steam with it, and keep food warm after cooking. I usually steam vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, etc. So, how do I steam with the Instant Pot? I place some water in the pot, and then I add a basket where I put the veggies. Make sure you don't add any salt into the water while you are steaming because it delays the evaporation. I just add the salt once it's cooked.
