Our Lord Jesus Christ didn’t come to Earth to establish a religion of rituals. 2. To enter this Kingdom we must be Born-Again by accepting Christ’s Redemptive Work on the Cross. 3. The Iglesia Ni Cristo believes that the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Matt. 3:17), is the one and only Savior given by God (Acts 13:23). Christ is the sole mediator between God and man (I Tim. 2:5) and the only way to God (John 14:6). But we do not subscribe to the belief that Christ is a God-Man. He is man in nature according to His own testimony (John 8:40) and the teachings of His Apostles (I Tim. 2:5; Matt. 1:18). The attributes of a human being are found in Christ. He hungered (Matt. 4:2), thirsted (John 19:28), became weary or tired (John 4:6), slept (Matt. 8:24), and died (Matt. 27:50; I Cor. 15:3). However, Christ as distinct from all men, is the only one Who did not sin (I Pet. 2:21-22; Heb. 4:15). He has been exalted by God and given a name above all other names, that at the name of Christ every knee should bow, those in heaven, and those on earth (Phil. 2:9-11). He has been placed by God far above all principality, power, might and dominion, and every name that is named, and all things have been put under His feet (Eph. 1:21-22). Christ will eventually subject all His power and authority to the true God (I Cor. 15:27-28). He had in so many instances introduced Himself as the Son of God but never did He appropriate the title “God” nor “God the Son” for Himself because He is not God but a man.
The Christian unity The Iglesia Ni Cristo subscribes to sacred unity. This is absolute unity, for in this unity, God, Christ, and the Church are joined together or united (John 17:23, 21). We observe this unity in the name of Christ, to the glory of God (I Cor. 1:10; 10:31). Division or schism is strictly forbidden because Christ is not divided. Divisions and strife are earthly, sensual, and devilish (I Cor. 1:10, 13; James 3:14-15).
Episode 113 Body, Soul, and Spirit The scriptures tell us that we were made in the image of God for God. Paul also prayed that we may be sanctified completely that our spirit, soul, and body may be preserved blameless at his coming. How does this happen? Is this happening to us? The Psalmist says that man is fearfully and wonderfully made. Man is a complicated being and not easy to understand or explain. But there is teaching in the scriptures that can give us some understanding of how we are made and what God is doing to bring us back from the effects of sin that we may enter fully into fellowship with Him both now and into eternity. God is conforming us to the image of Christ and preparing us to be wedded to Him for all eternity. As we mature we can understand more of how this is taking place that we may cooperate fully with the Holy Spirit who is working in us both to will and do for His good pleasure. The makeup of man Body (the physical part of man that is seen) Soul (the inner man—mind, desires, emotions) Spirit (intuition, conscience, communion) The whole man is to be sanctified (I Thess. 5:23) The Body Made for the Lord (I Cor. 6:13) Is how the life of God is expressed (Heb. 10:5-10) Has been affected by sin (Rom. 8:13) The Soul Is the seat of “I” or who I am (including our spirit) Is eternal (Matt. 10:28) Is renewed through obedience ( 2 Peter 1:5-11) The mind is renewed by taking every thought captive to Christ (2 Cor. 10:5) Our desires and emotions must not control (Gal. 5:24) Our Spirit Is seen as distinct from the soul (Heb. 4:12, I Thess. 5:23, I Cor. 14:4) Is made alive by new birth (John 3:6, Rom. 6:4) Is the faculty by which we “know” God (I Cor. 2:11-12) The place of communion with God (I Cor. 6:17) Is the seat of worship (John 4:23) Sanctification Initiated by God (the Holy Spirit, (preparing the Bride, I Cor. 6:11, Eph. 5:25-27) All based on Calvary and God’s grace (I Cor. 1:30, I Peter 1:2) Begins in our spirit (life from God, John 5:40) Works out in the inner man as we are conformed to Christ (Gal. 4:19) Expressed through the body in deeds of righteousness (I John 2:28-3:9) A good reference for further study on the makeup of man http://www.austin-sparks.net/english/books/what_is_man.html Additional resources at http://www.ntchurchsource.com/ Theme song “Will Your Anchor Hold” sung by J. Episode 49 In the Spirit God is Spirit, and we are commanded to worship God in spirit and in truth. We are to live in the Spirit, walk in the Spirit, pray in the Spirit, worship in the Spirit, and know each other according to the Spirit. What does God mean by “in the Spirit”? How do we do these things? The whole working of God in a spiritual work. Since God is Spirit, to know God we must know what this means in a practical way. The opposite to knowing God in the Spirit is to seek to know God with our natural senses. If we do this, it leads us into religion and we will find ourselves bound by our concepts, desires, and human limitations. God has made the way to be delivered from the limitations of the flesh into His glorious presence. • God is Spirit o Man is made in God’s image (a spiritual being) o We have a spirit, but born separate from God due to sin o We begin “in the Spirit” when we are born of the Spirit (Gal. 3:3) o Our spirit is joined to His Spirit and we are made alive to God (I Cor. 6:17) • God expects us to continue in the Spirit o To live in the Spirit (Rom. 8:5) o To be led by the Spirit (Rom. 8:14) o Assurance of relationship (Rom. 8:16) o To know the things of God (I Cor. 2:10-12) o To pray in the Spirit (Jude 20) o To worship in the Spirit (John 4:24) • Evidence (fruit) that comes from a life in the Spirit (Gal. 5:22) o Peace with God (Rom. 5:1) o Righteousness that comes from a walk of faith o Harmony with God’s children (Eph. 4:3) • Conflict with God (and His children) comes when: o We touch sin in some way o We resist the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51) o We quench the Holy Spirit (I Thes. 5:19) o We grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30) o We have something to defend or hide • To try to know God in the flesh is constant struggle • To know God in the Spirit is life and peace • Additional resources at http://www.ntchurchsource.com/ • Theme song “Will Your Anchor Hold” sung by J. I Corinthians 12:12-31
I Corinthians 10:14-32
Who we are in Christ is our identity, our direction, and our destiny. 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 “In Christ,” is our union or relationship with him through faith. In Christ, I have a new identity. I am a new creation. Before Christ I was sinful, far from God, hopelessly lost in my own sin and selfishness. Romans 3:10-12 10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” We were all the fool in proverbs – morally deficient. Like people wondering around in the dark. If you are in Christ (in relationship with him) through faith, then your identity has changed. 1. In Christ, you are a new creation - It is hard to over-state the change Paul is taking about. - it is not just that we’ve had our sins wiped out like a white board’s been wiped clean. - Christ’s work has made us new creatures. “New” (kainos) (kī-no's) – in respect to form: recently made, fresh, recent - in respect to substance: new kind Usage: “Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins.” “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” “Creature” – (ktisis) (ktē'-sēs) is creation or created thing. Usage: -But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female. -Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation The old has gone – who you were – lost in sin, slave to sin, turning away from God – all gone. All that you were is gone – all your sin, all your shame, all your guilt is taken away in Christ, because He died for your sin. He took all the punishment for it and there is no more. You are free from your past. (from It is Well With My Soul) My sin, O the bliss of this glorious tho't, My sin, not in part, but the whole Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! When the enemy reminds you who you have been, you remember who you are in Christ – you are a new creations. The new has come – in Christ, who you are has changed. You are according to 1 Peter 2, • A royal priesthood, • a chosen people, • a holy nation • a people belonging to God • I Cor 5:17 you are a new creation v. 18-20 – This is from God – “Salvation is from the Lord” (Jonah) God reconciled us to himself. 2. In Christ , you are reconciled to God. “Reconcile” – to change or exchange (as in changing money). He exchanged our former lives of sin with a new life that is “in Christ.” We’ve gone from being lost and hopeless to being alive in Christ. Not only that, but after he reconciled us, He gave us the ministry of reconciliation. 3. In Christ, you are his ambassador. We who have received the privilege of being reconciled now have the responsibility of being instruments in God’s hands to minister the message of reconciliation throughout the world. Just like we talked last week, we are a royal priesthood - v. 21 – Summary of the Gospel: Christ is the only one who is entirely righteous. At Calvary he took our sin upon himself and the punishment we deserved, which was death. By marvelous exchange, he gave us his righteousness and to be reconciled to God. Our acceptance and our standing with God are completely based in Christ. It is all his doing. 4. In Christ, you have become the righteousness of God. In this marvelous exchange, Christ took our sin, we get his righteousness.
