A Christmas Message MESSAGE SUMMARY: The real meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ – the Messiah, who is the Savior of the World. Christians emphasize Christmas and Jesus' birth because His birth: 1) fulfills many Biblical prophesies, especially n terms of the time and location of Jesus' birth; 2) points the fact that Jesus was more than just a man; 3) and life saw Jesus claim the right to forgive sins; 4) led Jesus to call God His “Father”, which indicated that Jesus was God; 5) resulted in Jesus' Resurrection, which validated Jesus' claims and made Him different; and 6) was God, through Jesus' birth, still trying to get our attention. God, through His Grace and through the birth of Jesus, did for us what we could not do for ourselves – save ourselves from our sins and our death that would result from our sins. God, through the birth of Jesus -- the God-Man, entered into our earthly mess to save us because, after God's Grace and Jesus' birth, all our sin now resides on Jesus. God's Grace through the birth of Jesus, demonstrates God's love for us. God wants us to know that Jesus was born for us out of His love for us. Therefore, we need to consider that God, the Creator of the Universe, entered the world, through the baby Jesus for us so that we might have a personal relationship with Him. Have you yielded to God so that your mind's consideration of God's Grace, love, and Jesus' birth can move from your mind into a commitment of both your mind and your heart to your faith in Jesus as your Savior and into God's service? Until we yield to God's lordship over our lives, we are saying to God that “we don't need your love”. Is Jesus your Lord and, therefore, your Savior? God has given you the greatest Christmas gift that you will ever receive. Have you accepted His Gift and opened His gift into your life? If not, then why not? With your hands open, you can accept God's Christmas gift by saying: “I am sorry; thank you; and please”.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM RIGHTEOUS IN GOD'S EYES. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21). Send us a textWhat if the most honest thing you can say in suffering is not “help me feel better,” but “bring me back to You”? We dive into Job 9:32–33 and uncover how Job's cry for a mediator anticipates the gospel with piercing clarity. God is not a man, so judgment isn't a negotiation—and that realization reshapes everything about how we face pain, guilt, and the ache of feeling far from Him.We walk through why self-help fails at the one thing that matters most: reconciliation with a holy God. From courtroom analogies to Hebrews 4, we explore the necessity of a Mediator who is both God and man. Jesus alone can lay a hand on both, silence dread, and clothe us with a righteousness we could never earn. The conversation refuses shortcuts and counterfeits; no human intermediary, ritual, or motivational lift can pay an eternal debt. Only the God-Man can represent us perfectly and open bold access to the throne of grace.Along the way, we share personal stories of change, tough love, and the joy of watching someone return to truth. We sit with Job's fear and discover how it becomes courage when the rod is removed and the Mediator speaks for us. If suffering has ever made God feel distant, this is a clear-eyed map back to fellowship: seek the One who reconciles, not the comforts that distract. Come for the theology, stay for the hope, and leave with a renewed confidence in Christ's finished work.If this conversation helped you see Christ more clearly, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review so others can find it too. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of a herald, who proclaims peace and preaches good news, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God is king!" (Isaiah 52:7). Amen.Merriam-Webster recently tried correcting the wording of a classic Christmas hymn. But the self-proclaimed "America's Most Trusted Dictionary" ended up with eggnog on its face. In a now-deleted post to social media platform X, Merriam-Webster tried to edit the Christmas hymn "What Child Is This?" by posting "Which* Child Is This?"As an author and public speaker, I'm very interested in proper words and correct English. But the online dictionary is just wrong. The dictionary presented themselves as smug, but even more biblically incorrect. The hymn isn't asking, "Which of these Jewish children born in Bethlehem is this?" That's a question of location. The hymn is asking, "What kind of child is this?" That's a question of theology."What Child is This?" was written in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix and was later paired with the ancient tune of "Greensleeves," which dates to the 16th century. In the first verse, the hymn answers the question of "What child is this?" with this statement, "This is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing."St. John also answers the question of "What Child is this?" by stating, "The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. We have seen his glory, the glory he has as the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14).Verse 1: What child is this who, laid to rest, On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet With anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing. Haste, haste to bring him laud, The babe, the Son of Mary! What child is this who is sleeping on Mary's lap? This is no ordinary baby. It is a Child that the angels fill the night sky to sing about. It is a Child that shepherds leave their flocks to run and see. Why? Because this is no ordinary baby. This is Christ the King. He is the baby, the Son of Mary ... but so much more.St. John writes about this baby. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him everything was made, and without him not one thing was made that has been made" (John 1:1-3).This baby is no ordinary baby. He is also the God who formed a human body out of the dust of the ground. He is the God who was formed as a baby in the womb of the Virgin Mary. God breathed into the man's nostrils the breath of life and his heart started beating. He is the God whose very human baby heart started beating in the sixth week after his conception by the Holy Spirit within the womb of Mary. About 7 ½ months later, the Virgin gave birth to the Christ Child, and he took his first breaths of the air he had created. The One who created life was alive in the womb for 9 months, then was born on Christmas Day.The Word through whom everything was called into existence was now the Word made flesh. The One who had walked among the stars and would one day walk on water, would have to learn how walk with shaky, little toddler steps. The One who made the thunders clap would enjoy clapping his chubby, little baby hands in joy.The One who had set up a marvelous system where animals from antelope to zebras would be fed, would have to be fed with milk from his mother's breast. The One who would be like every child everywhere who has rolled mud in his hands to make a snake, would one day be pierced by the ancient snake of the Devil.Verse 2: Why lies he in such mean estate Where oxen now are feeding? Good Christians, fear; For sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce him through; The cross he'll bear for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh, The babe, the Son of Mary!If this Child is more than just the Son of Mary, why does he lie in such mean estate? Why is this baby lying in such lowly conditions, where the oxen are feeding? The Son of God came low to be among his lowly people. We are made poor and lowly by our sins. We are born in sin. We are dead in our sins. All we can do is evil – in our thoughts, in our words, and in our actions. We sin in what we do. We sin in what we fail to do. All that sin causes us to die. Dying with sin, wickedness, and unbelief, we are destined to an eternal death in hell. What Child is this? A Child that was born to save us from sin, death, and hell. The One who breathed life into the first man was now a man who needed to breathe to live. The One who started Adam's heart beating was the second Adam whose heart was beating. All that was reversed on Good Friday. The very people the Son of God came to save crucified him. St. John explains this. "The real light that shines on everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not recognize him. He came to what was his own, yet his own people did not accept him" (John 1:9-11). The creatures God created did not recognize or accept the Creator living among them. So, they pierced the divinely human flesh. The rough wood of the manger foreshadowed the rougher wood of the cross. On the cross, the Word made flesh had his perfect flesh pierced with nails and thorns. The sun was darkened and the earth trembled as Jesus cried out, "It is finished." Then he closed his eyes, breathed his last, and his heart stopped beating. To make sure the Son of God was dead, his heart and lungs were pierced with a spear. For three days, the corpse of the Creator of Life lay cold and dead in a borrowed tomb. Then as the first rays of sunlight began dawning on Easter morning, the darkness and death of Friday afternoon were shattered. Everything had been quiet and still in the darkness of the tomb. One moment the tomb was filled with darkness and death. The next moment the grave was filled with life and light! Darkness cannot extinguish the Light. St. John explains, "In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. The light is shining in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:4-5).He who was born, wrapped in strips of cloth, and laid in a manger arose from the slab of the tomb clothed in glory, the firstborn from the dead.Jesus took one breath and put death to death. With his first heartbeat, he defeated the Devil who imagined he had killed God's only-begotten Son.The Creator of Life died. He rose. He lives. He will never die again. When you believe in the Son of God as your Savior, you will still die because of your sins. But Jesus has removed your sins. He has endured your death. He has defeated your enemy of the Devil. Though you will die, you will live again. And you will never die again. The Lord of Light will awaken you from the darkness of death. He will open your grave on the Last Day. You will live in the light of heavenly glory. For this Child is the life and light of mankind.Verse 3: So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; Come, peasant, king, to own him. The King of kings Salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise the song on high; The virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy, for Christ is born, The babe, the Son of Mary! How do you respond to the question, "What Child is this?" In faith, you respond by bringing him your treasures – incense, gold, and myrrh. You bring him your treasures – money, vocation, prayers, works, and worship. Praise him with hearts filled with love. Praise him with mouths filled with song. Praise him with hands and feet filled with action and motivation. As the Virgin Mary gently sings her lullaby, so we gently sing our praises to the Christ Child on this Christmas Morn. What Child is this? This Child is the One who had his birth announced to Bethlehem shepherds by angels in the sky and announced to Babylonian Magi with a miraculous star in space. This Child comes for the salvation of everyone from shepherds to Wise Men, from peasants to kings. He is the King of kings who comes into our world so we can be made heirs of his heavenly kingdom. He is the Lord of lords who enters our presence to welcome lowly sinners into his presence. He is the Word made flesh so that he can be a baby lying in a manger, then the God-Man shedding his divinely human blood as he lies on a cross, and then the resurrected Christ whose corpse is raised from the dead.Jesus – the Son of God and Mary's Son – is now flesh and divinity for all eternity. Through faith in the divine Son of God and the humble Son of Man, our Savior with flesh, we will be standing before his throne as resurrected flesh and holy soul. One commentator on Merriam-Webster's criticism of the hymn title, posted his own criticism of the online dictionary. He wrote, "I regret to inform you our modern dictionary is illiterate." The online dictionary wanted to "correct" the hymn but ended up being corrected themselves. Whoever wrote that post does not seem to understand Christianity.By the grace of God and through faith in the Child in the manger, you and I are among those who do understand Christianity. We have received Christ and been born again through water and the Word. St. John writes, "But to all who did receive him, to those who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. They were born, not of blood, or of the desire of the flesh, or of a husband's will, but born of God" (John 1:12-13).The 160-year-old hymn is correct. That's why we're singing it on this Christmas Day. "What (not which) Child is this?" Amen. The Lord lays bare his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation from our God. (Isaiah 52:10). Broadcasts – Christian Working Woman

Christmas 2025 is almost here. Let's use this as a time to focus on the Christmas account of the birth of the Christ-child and discover unique facts about Christmas we may not have ever considered. For example, how about those shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night (Luke 2:8). Who were these guys anyway? All we know about them is they were shepherds in Bethlehem. This means most likely the sheep they were watching that first Christmas night were sheep destined to become sacrificial lambs at the Temple in Jerusalem. Bethlehem is close to Jerusalem. If you travel it today, it takes less than half an hour—about 5 and 1/2 miles. In that day, a little longer of course, but certainly doable in a few hours. These shepherds in that field that night were raising sacrificial lambs for the Temple, and then suddenly, the visit of the angels tells them the Lamb of God has been born in Bethlehem. Once they recover from the fright of this visitation, they decide to go see the Lamb of God, born to take away the sin of the world. Leaving their sheep behind—which was very unusual for shepherds to do—they travel to find the baby with Mary and Joseph, and they worship him. Then they spread the word, telling everyone what they had seen and who they had seen! Reminds me of a wonderful verse from the wonderful song, A Cradle in the Shadow of the Cross. Talking about the shepherds looking at Baby Jesus—listen to this verse: The shepherd lads were bending the knee, and how the little lambs were all trying to see, the Passover Lamb, born in a manager, just to give his life for lost sheep like me. A baby born to be a lamb—the Lamb of God for you and me. We have much to celebrate this Christmas! Jesus was born in a manger to become a man—the God-Man, the only qualified Savior who gave his life for lost sheep like me and you. Think about that today; it's a great way to prepare your heart for Christmas day.

St. Justin Popovic (+1979) the great Serbian theologian of the 20th century, explains the nature and veracity of God being Judge of all creation. "It is natural for the heavenly Sower," writes St. Justin, "who has abundantly sown the seed of eternal, divine truths in the earth of the human soul, to come and see how much of that seed has rotted in the mire of lust, been strangled by the thorns of passion or withered by the coals of sinfulness, and how much has grown and yielded divine fruit, and, also, to reap and winnow the ripe ears of corn."A reading from The Orthodox Church and Ecumenism by St. Justin Popovic, p. 85-88.NOTE: The meaning of Theanthropic: divine (in Greek theos = God) and human (in Greek anthropos = man); the Theanthropos = the God-Man, i.e. Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.

The Christmas story never grows old. From an angel announcing to teenage Mary that she'd become pregnant with the Son of God to an angel telling Joseph he'd have a son but not by him, you're hooked. Then myriad angels announce Jesus' birth to minimum-wage shepherds, while great men travel 715 miles not just to see a baby, but to worship Him. The Gospels show the human perspective, but what about God's viewpoint? Hebrews 1 gives us exactly that. It was written to Jews who believed intellectually that Jesus was the promised Messiah, but needed final convincing that He wasn't just the human Messiah, but God Himself. The doctrine of the incarnation, which is a word from Latin meaning “becoming flesh,” teaches this. Jesus Christ is one person with two distinct natures, fully human and fully divine. He's not two people but one. He's the same person both before and after the incarnation. The difference is that before, He had one nature (divine); but after, He had two (divine and human). The one who sits on the throne of the universe today is God and man. The man who walked on earth in time is the God who is to be worshipped forever. When you see Jesus for who He really is, you discover God's complete message for you.

Sermons from Lord of Lords Lutheran Church

To all those loved by God who are in Rome (and Casper), called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 1:7). Amen.Ahaz is a wicked, unbelieving king. He is a descendant of King David, but he is unlike David who cherished his children and led the nation of Israel in their worship of the true God. Ahaz sacrificed his own son in the fire as he led the nation of Israel in the worship of pagan gods.Earlier in chapter 7, Isaiah records how King Ahaz of Judah is being threatened by Pekah, the king of Israel, who has allied himself with Rezin, the king of Aram, to destroy Judah. The prophet Isaiah calls King Ahaz to trust in the Lord for protection from this alliance. Ahaz refuses. His solution to this threat is to make is own alliance with the nation of Assyria, north of Aram (2 Kings 16:1-9).Isaiah tells Ahaz that he doesn't need this alliance with the wicked nation of Assyria. The Lord will protect Judah from its enemies. To prove this, Isaiah tells Ahaz to pick a sign – any sign – as proof of his protection. The Lord spoke to Ahaz again. He said, "Ask for a sign from the Lord your God. Ask for it either in the depths below or in the heights above" (Isaiah 7:10-11).Ahaz could have asked for anything. He could have gone simple and asked for a shooting star across the sky that night. He could have gone big and asked for an asteroid to come crashing down on his enemies. He could have asked for any sign he wanted. But King Ahaz doesn't trust in God. Instead, he trusts the alliance he had made with Assyria. Because he doesn't trust God, there was no sign that would have convinced him of God's power to save his throne or country. In false humility, Ahaz refuses to "test" the Lord. Ahaz responded, "I will not ask. I will not test the Lord" (Isaiah 7:12).To prove to Ahaz and to the world that his promises can be trusted, God decides on his own sign. He is not going to allow an unbelieving king to stand in the way of the physical deliverance of Judah and the eternal deliverance of all who believe the sign. God chooses a sign that is an embarrassment to Ahaz because it is so simple, yet so miraculous. It is also a sign that would take 700 years to fulfill. So, Isaiah said, "Listen now, you house of David. Is it not enough for you to test the patience of men? Will you test the patience of my God as well? Therefore the Lord himself will give a sign for all of you. Look! The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and name him Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:13-14).God promises the virgin's Son and his Son will be named Immanuel – God with us... and God for us.What does it mean that Jesus, the Son of God, is "God with us"? To help understand the relationship of God to humans, imagine the relationship of humans to ants. Young Hudson volunteered to be our resident "ant-lover" for this story.Imagine that Hudson's dad, Ty, is going to be resurfacing their driveway. But Hudson notices that there's a large anthill at the edge of the driveway. He becomes worried that when the hot asphalt is poured onto the driveway, the asphalt will also fill the anthill – killing the countless ants inside.Hudson, being the ant-lover that he is, goes outside to start talking to the ants. He tells them about his dad, the driveway, the asphalt, and their anthill. He tells them the entire story. What do the ants do? ... Nothing. They ignore Hudson, even though he's trying to help them. So, Hudson gets down on their level. He puts his face right above the anthill and shouts warnings for them to pack up and leave. The ants just run away. What can Hudson do? He loves the ants. He wants to rescue the ants. But he's too superior to them. They're too puny. He's like a "god" to them.Hudson decides that the only way they'll listen to him is if he becomes one of them. So, that's what he does. He goes to his closet and put on his Ant-Man suit from Halloween. (Ant-Man is one of the Avengers.)Hudson, in his Ant-Man suit, pushes a button and shrinks down to become the size of an ant. (This is a very high-tech Halloween costume!) In this form, he's able to communicate with the ants and save those who believe his message. It sounds like a silly story, doesn't it? It will seem even more silly when Hudson wears his Ant-Man suit to church one day.It seems ridiculous that a person would become an ant to save the ants. But that's no more ridiculous than God becoming a human to save the humans.Think of the world the Son of God left. Our classiest mansion would be an anthill to him. Earth's finest cuisine would be crumbs on heaven's table. The idea of becoming an ant with a segmented body and antennae? That's nothing compared to God becoming an embryo and entering the womb of Mary. But that's what the Son of God did. The God of the universe was born into the poverty of a peasant and spent his first night in the cow's feed trough. The God of the universe left the glory of heaven and moved into our neighborhood. The God of the universe left his eternal seat on his golden throne, surrounded by saints and angels to be born in time and laid in a manger surrounded by Saint Mary and Saint Joseph. Who could have imagined God would do such a thing? Why would Jesus come? He comes to be Immanuel. He comes to be God with us.But I want you to understand that God being with us is not necessarily good news. He has every right to be God with us in righteous anger over our sins. He can be God with us in justified judgment over how we act and live. He can be God with us in deserving punishment over our continual crimes against God and humanity.A king coming to be with his people is not good news if he's there to raise their taxes. A judge coming to be with the people in the courtroom is not good news if he's there to sentence them to prison. A human coming to be with the ants is not good news if he's there to step on their anthill. And God coming to be with his creation is not good news if he's coming to bring the hellish punishment they rightly deserve. It is significant that when the angel appears to Joseph in a dream he says, "Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:20-21). The God who is coming is not coming to destroy his people because of their sins. Rather, he's coming to save his people from their sins. In other words, the God who is with you is the God who comes for you.We call this the incarnation. Divinity combined with humanity. God's gift of his Son wrapped in cute, little baby skin. We confess our belief in the incarnation in our three Christian universal creeds. The Apostles' Creed: "I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary..."The Nicene Creed: "For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human."The Athanasian Creed: "He is God, eternally begotten from the nature of the Father, and he is man, born in time from the nature of his mother, fully God, fully man, with rational soul and human flesh, equal to the Father as to his deity, less than the Father as to his humanity..."This is what the incarnation of God taking on human flesh reveals: Jesus is the King coming to free his people from the tyranny of the Devil. He is the Judge coming to release the prisoners from the prison of hell. He is the God-Man coming to proclaim rescue to those who will listen and believe. He is the God who could come to us to wipe us out and shed our blood. However, instead he is the God who comes to wipe out our sins with his blood.God with us is only good news if God is for us. The good news is in changing the preposition. "For" means that Jesus is on our side, out to get our enemies. We are the "apple of his eye" (Psalm 17:8). He comes to live the perfect life for us, in our place. He comes to suffer for us, in our place. He comes to die for us, in our place. He comes to be the fulfillment of his names. He is Jesus because he saves us from our sins. He is Immanuel because he is God with us since he came for us.Again, why would Jesus come? Because he loves to be with the ones he loves.Dr. Maxwell Maltz tells a remarkable story of a love like this. A man attempted to save his parents from a burning house. He couldn't get to them. They perished. He was burned and disfigured in the fire. The man mistakenly interpreted his pain as God's punishment. He would not let anyone see him — not even his wife. The wife went to Dr. Maltz, a plastic surgeon, for help. He told her not to worry. He said, "I can restore his face." The wife was unenthused. Her husband had repeatedly refused any help. She knew he would refuse again. Then why her visit? She told the doctor, "I want you to disfigure my face so I can be like him. If I can share his pain, maybe he'll let me back in his life."Dr. Maltz was shocked. He denied her request but was so moved by her love that he went to speak with her husband. Knocking on the man's bedroom door, he called loudly. "Sir, my name is Dr. Maltz. I'm a plastic surgeon, and I can restore your face." No response. "Please come out." Again, there was no answer.Still speaking through the door, Dr. Maltz told the man of his wife's proposal. He said, "She wants me to disfigure her face, to make her face like yours in the hope that you let her back into your life. That's how much she loves you." There was a moment of silence, and then, ever so slowly, the doorknob began to turn. The way the woman felt for her husband is a small picture of the way God feels about us. But he did more than make the offer. He took on our face, our disfigurement. He became like us. Just look at the places he was willing to go to reach people – feed troughs, carpentry shops, deserts, and cemeteries. He visited mountain tops and temple courtyards. He went into the homes of friends, Pharisees, tax collectors, centurions, and dead little girls. The places Jesus went to reach us show how far he goes to fulfill his name, "He saves."Getting back to the story of King Ahaz... Israel and Aram failed in their plan against Judah. Both Israel and Aram were defeated by the Assyrians, with the northern kingdom of Israel falling to Assyria in 722 B.C.But then, look out, Ahaz! Assyria was not going to stop with knocking off Israel and Aram. Assyria would then turn its attention to Judah. After the promise of the virgin birth, Isaiah told King Ahaz, "The Lord will bring on you, on your people, and on your father's house, days worse than any since the day that Ephraim broke away from Judah. The Lord will bring the king of Assyria" (Isaiah 7:17).God fulfilled that promise, too. Assyria threatened Jerusalem 21 years later. At that time, Isaiah had to counsel the next king of Judah, Hezekiah, to trust in the Lord and not in political or military alliances. King Hezekiah listened to the counsel of Isaiah, and that threat again was lifted.God fulfilled his promise to wicked King Ahaz in sending a virgin's Son to be named Immanuel. This is why every Advent we sing, "Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel." Jesus is Immanuel – God with us by being God for us. He loves to be with the ones he loves. Amen. This gospel is about his Son, who in the flesh was born a descendant of David, who in the spirit of holiness was declared to be God's powerful Son by his resurrection from the dead—Jesus Christ, our Lord (Romans 1:3-4). Amen.View this sermon (with video and/or audio recording) on our website: https://www.casperwels.com/sermons/god-with-us-and-god-for-us/

On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank shares his thoughts on the coming of Christ in flesh. The reason we rejoice at Christmas is because the baby born to Mary and Joseph was no ordinary child. This baby was the ultimate fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy of Immanuel: “God with us.” Although John's Gospel does not include a narrative of Jesus' birth, the doctrine of the Incarnation is beautifully summed up in his introduction: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The clear testimony of Scripture is that, in the Incarnation, Christ was one person with two natures; fully God and fully man. As Theanthropos, the God-Man, Jesus lived a perfectly sinless life and died a sinner's death to atone, once for all, for the sins of humanity.Hank also answers the following questions:What happens to our soul when we die? Send us a textThis weekend's program was produced in 2022 and was prepared to focus our attention on the Christ of Christmas. In the right column are resources and ideas for you to use personally with your own families.  The Christian Worldview wishes all of you a memorable and meaningful Christmas.  To God be all Glory!Christmas is upon us. While it's easy to get distracted by all that competes for our attention—current events and politics, work and school, sports and recreation, travel and material things, even family and church—there is really only one most important issue and that is the person of Jesus Christ and what He has done for mankind.Jesus said, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).That couldn't be more clear. Where you spend eternity hinges on whether you place your faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.Christmas is the time when Christians remember and celebrate God sending His Son into our world, born of a virgin woman, mighty and holy in word and deed, and loving and sacrificial in offering His perfect life to satisfy God's wrath and justice for our sins.Today will be a program to think about not Christmas generally, but the Christ of Christmas specifically. We will read God's word, listen to some music, even do a Christmas quiz, all to appreciate and worship the God/Man, the Lord Jesus Christ. “But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.” (Galatians 4:4–5 NLT) When we think of Christmas, we think of the arrival of Jesus: “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 NLT). In reality, it was also a departure. For us, a Child was born. But for God the Father, a Son was given. Twice in Galatians 4:4–5, God talks about sending Jesus to us (NLT). In Heaven, the time had come for the departure of God’s Son. We even have a record in Hebrews 10 of Jesus’ farewell words to the Father. He said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer. You were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin. Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God—as is written about me in the Scriptures’” (Hebrews 10:5–7 NLT). It’s impossible for us to comprehend the sacrifice, the break in intimacy, involved in God’s sending of His Son. We see that intimacy between Father and Son throughout Jesus’ public ministry. Luke 6:12 says, “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God” (NIV). Jesus prioritized His relationship with His Father above all else. We see that intimacy in Matthew 26:39. As the time of His sacrifice approached, Jesus prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will” (NIV). Jesus knew what was coming. And in Mark 15:34, we see the unimaginable agony of Jesus’ sacrifice as He cried out in a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (NIV). God placed the sins of the world on His Son. And in that moment, Jesus was banished from His Father’s presence because sin cannot coexist with God. Jesus suffered the separation from God that we deserve. Jesus also made an unimaginable sacrifice at His birth. He went from the throne of Heaven to a feeding trough. He went from the presence of angels to a stable of animals. He who was larger than the universe became an embryo. The apostle Paul summed it up well: “You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9 NLT). No one who has ever lived has even remotely affected human history the way Jesus Christ has. He has been opposed, censored, banned, and criticized by every generation since His birth. Yet His influence continues unabated. There has never been anyone like Jesus because Jesus was not just a good man. He was the God-Man who came and walked this earth because of the sacrifice of His Father. And that’s what we celebrate at Christmas. How could Jesus, Who was always God, become even better? Hi Folks. This will be our last podcast of 2025. We'll resume in January. I'm excited for us to move on today to the next two verses of Hebrews so let's start by reading them. We're using the NKJV:Hebrews 1:4-5 (NKJV) having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. [5] For to which of the angels did He ever say: “YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU”? And again: “I WILL BE TO HIM A FATHER, AND HE SHALL BE TO ME A SON”?These verses tell us that our Messiah, having become so much better than the angels, has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. So we need to ask ourselves if Yeshua, Jesus, became something that He was not previously. How did He obtain a more excellent name? Now this verse is comparing Jesus with angels. He has become better than the angels and He has inherited a more excellent name than they. We might ask if He has become better than the angels by virtue of inheriting a more excellent name and if so what is in that name that makes Him better? Let's read verse four again:‌Hebrews 1:4 (NKJV) 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.Because the word as separates two clauses in this verse, and because as is present in the Greek, we might wonder how the Son of God, who was and is always perfect and who was and is always God, became so much better than the angels by inheriting a better name. What could that mean? I think that in order to understand this question we need to remember the last part of verse 3 and we need to remember that the chapter and verse numbers in the Bible were not in the original Scriptures. Keeping that in mind let's read the last part of verse 3 with all of verse 4 as if that was a single verse:‌Hebrews 1:3-4 (NKJV) .... when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.‌So, Yeshua's becoming better than the angels by obtaining a more excellent name seems to be at least in part be due to His sitting down on the Father's right hand and that could never have happened without Jesus having purged our sins. And He couldn't have done that without being the perfect sacrifice and He couldn't have been that perfect sacrifice without being God. But OK, we know that Jesus is God and He was God before the cross.John 1:1 (NKJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.Now Jesus being God is not new. So, how did He become so much better than the angels? It seems to me that of course, as God He was better than the angels already but then He became so much better than the angels. What accounts for that? Let's read verse four once more:Hebrews 1:4 (NKJV) having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. What is the meaning of as here? Does it mean He became so much better because He obtained a more excellent name than they? I think we have to understand what rank the angels hold and compare it to the rank that Yeshua holds. And of course, there is no comparison there! There never was. But Yeshua has been elevated even more in some way.‌Again, His becoming better seems to be due to a change in His name and what that name represents.‌So what was the nature of this change? It was a change in status or rank. To understand this, I think we get some help from looking at the next verse, verse 5 :Hebrews 1:5 (NKJV) 5 For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”?‌“You are My Son, Today I have begotten You” - Now folks, this could be a little confusing, so please stick with me. Jesus was God the Son throughout eternity but this clause from Hebrews 1:5 is describing something extra, something new. “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”. This clause is a direct reference to Psalms 2:7 (NKJV) “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.‌Incidentally folks, to digress for just a moment, note the word begotten in John 3:16. Let me read that to you:‌“John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.‌Folks, the word begotten in John 3:16 does not have the meaning to beget or to give birth; the Greek word is better translated as unique or one and only.‌But in Psalms 2:7 and so in Hebrews 1:5, the word for begotten does usually mean to beget or to give birth. And there seems to be a particular point in time, today, when the Father becomes the Father of this very special Son, our Messiah. In the NKJV it says Today I have begotten You. Now we know that God the Son always existed and that He is God. He was never anything else. And He was always the Son, the eternal Son. How do we know that? We know it from: ‌Proverbs 30:4 (NKJV) Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son's name, If you know? But again, how could the Son of God become better - how could God ever become better? - and how could He become the Son of God the Father? Wasn't He already the Son? Now, He, Yeshua, is God. He was never born in the way that you and I were born. Yes, He was literally born of a virgin, Miriam or Mary. That was the incarnation when He became the God-Man and that was indeed a change. At the incarnation His nature changed from perfect God to perfect God and perfect Man. And we know that happened so that He could do something that He couldn't do when He was God only. That something was to die on the cross. And there were other things that He couldn't do when He was perfect God only; He couldn't suffer the way a man can suffer. When he was perfect God only, He couldn't do that. And we'll see a little later in Hebrews why that is necessary. But the most important thing that he could do as a man that He couldn't do as perfect God was to die. ‌Folks, this is absolutely extraordinary, is it not? Without question it is extraordinary! ‌So Jesus became the God-Man. He was no less God than He was before but now He became Man also. And He was and is a Man in a way that no other man could ever be. In what way is that you might ask? He was without sin, as we will see when we get to Hebrews chapter four where we read about Jesus being a high priest:Hebrews 4:15:“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”So Jesus went from being God only to being the God-Man. Did this change His name and status? I don't think that it did at His birth, at His incarnation. But, as perfect God and perfect Man he was able to die and by so doing He became sin for us, meaning He became a sin offering for us, or I should say He became the sin offering for us, the perfect sacrifice. He paid the price that God's Law demanded for sin, for every sin ever committed. That price was, and is still today, death: Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”‌After He died He was buried and then He was raised from the dead and those of us who accept the marvelous work that He did on the cross for us are included in this supernatural experience: Romans 6:4 (NKJV) Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. ‌So, by what He did Jesus made it possible for you and me to not only be forgiven of our sins but also be raised to newness of life. And because He did this His name and His status changed. I think verse five of this first chapter makes that clear: Hebrews 1:5 (NKJV) For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”?This verse directly quotes Psalm 2:7 and it also quotes 1 Chronicles 17:13. Let's look at the context of these two Old Testament verses. Let's look at the context of the 1 Chronicles verse first:1 Chronicles 17:11-14 (NKJV) And it shall be, when your days are fulfilled, when you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your seed after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. [12] He shall build Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. [13] I will be his Father, and he shall be My son; and I will not take My mercy away from him, as I took it from him who was before you (King Saul). [14] And I will establish him in My house and in My kingdom forever; and his throne shall be established forever.” ‘ “These verses describe the Davidic Covenant. Now most Bible scholars quote from 2 Samuel when referencing the Davidic Covenant:2 Samuel 7:12-16 (NKJV) “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. [13] He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. [14] I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. [15] But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. [16] And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ‘ “I prefer to quote the 1 Chronicles passage because in the 2 Samuel passage verse 14 speaks about David's son Solomon rather than the Messiah. Let's read that verse:[14] I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.Because Messiah is God, He is without sin and so verse 14 can't be about Him. But nothing like that is present in the 1 Chronicles passage. But as important as this is, it's a digression. So, getting back to Psalm 2:7: the meaning of begotten in the Hebrew in “Today I have begotten You”, from Psalm 2:7, normally means to beget, to bear, or to be born in the very same sense that you and I were born. Let's look at the whole verse:‌Psalm 2:7 (NKJV) “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.The Messiah, Jesus, is saying “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. - that is very emphatic language folks - Today I have begotten you. There is a declaration and a decree here. Very emphatic language indeed. Now the context in Psalm 2:7 is that of an exaltation to divine kingship as shown inPsalm 2:8-9 (NKJV) :8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel.' ” ‌Now this is still future to where we are today (December 16, 2025). But because of this context which is that of exaltation to kingship, normally formalized in a coronation ceremony, many scholars consider begotten in Psalm 2 to mean elevation to kingship. The Father is rewarding the Son by crowning Him as King. The Father is giving the Son His inheritance, meaning the Son's inheritance, and the Son's status and rank are thereby increased or made even more excellent. I am inclined to agree with those scholars who interpret Psalm 2 in this way. I believe that the meaning here in Hebrews is the same. The author of Hebrews is using Psalm 2, a psalm of exaltation of the Son, to show just how very much better than the angels the Son, Yeshua is. He is not only better because He is God but He has become so much better than the angels because His status changed after the cross. He has been exalted to become God's Son the King. This is a prophecy folks, a prophecy that will be entirely fulfilled after the Son's second coming when this coronation will take place. That is the more excellent name that He has inherited, the name of the begotten Son, King of the universe, King of Kings and Lord of Lords: Revelation 19:16 “16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.””. This supports the explanation that begotten in both Psalm 2:7and Hebrews 1:5 is used in a different sense than that of physical birth. Instead it indicates an elevation in status, or in a sense being born into a new status, the status of a King, the Son of the divine Father, Who will establish the throne of His kingdom over Israel forever. I should say Folks, that indicates an awesome rank indeed! So begotten as used here is a figure of speech. It does not refer to literal physical birth. ‌Psalm 2, verses 8 and 9, even though not quoted in the Hebrews verses we are looking at today, also help to amplify the inheritance aspect of Yeshua's change in status. Let me read those verses to you again: 8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel.' ” ‌These verses describe a Father bestowing upon His Son the divine inheritance of kingship. This change in status didn't make Him better in the sense of becoming a better God but to become better than the angels in a new sense. Because He did something that no angel could ever do. He absorbed on the cross the punishment for every sin ever committed by every member of the human race who accepted Him or would ever accept Him and by so doing became better than the angels and by so doing pleased His Father to an extent that we can't fully appreciate. ‌Now regarding angels and their status, we need to talk about that and we will next time.‌In the meantime Folks, are you getting a better idea of who Jesus is? Of how God came to the earth in the form of a man? Not only to die for us, to pay the debt for our sins, and to make us new but also to meet us, and to teach us, and to let us get to know Him. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, a great pastor and preacher of the 20th century used to say this: If the Gospel of Jesus Christ when presented to us doesn't seem too good to be true, it is not being presented properly. Folks, I could not agree with that statement more! So, if any of you reading or listening today don't know Yeshua/Jesus please call on Him today, ask him to forgive your sins and to save you and to give you eternal life. Rest assured, He will do it!Thanks for listening folks! This is Art Wolinsky. Until the next time, God bless you my friends! This is a public episode. "What does it mean to be in Christ? The answer is nothing less than the heart of the gospel itself. In this sermon from 1 Corinthians 1:30–31, we explore the glorious truth that salvation is union with Christ. Every blessing of the gospel—justification, sanctification, adoption, redemption, and glorification—flows from this one reality: believers are united to the Son of God who became man for our salvation.Union with Christ is not merely one aspect of Christian theology—it is salvation. From eternity past to the final glory, every part of our redemption is rooted in our connection to Christ. We are united to Him by faith, and that faith itself is the gracious gift of God.You will discover in this message:• Why union with Christ is the foundation of every gospel blessing• How justification and sanctification are inseparable because Christ cannot be divided• Why all salvation is of grace—in Christ alone• How the incarnation makes union with Christ possible: the eternal Son became man so that we might be united to God• The glory and humility of belonging to the God-Man who is wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption for us

Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord as long as I live (Psalm 146:1-2). Amen.Racine – in southeastern Wisconsin, where we recently moved from – has already received 13 inches of snow, causing travel issues, school closures, and buried cars. Then Racine warmed up and had rain. Now they're experiencing single digit, and even negative, temperatures to freeze all that rain and melted snow to create even more dangerous conditions. That's way east of us. How about north and south of us? Up to 2 feet of snow is expected in Yellowstone National Park this week. The Snowy Range has already received 75 inches of snow in 40 hours!Yet here we are in Casper, enjoying 50-degree weather for several days in a row. We've also had several days of 50 plus mph winds. Because everything is a contest, I may have rubbed it in to my friends back in Racine about our wonderful weather. I did admit that it was a tad breezy, though.Wyoming meteorologist, Don Day commented on this week's wind, "If it's windy, it's not going to be terribly cold. It's rare to have 50-degree days and no wind in winter. When it gets really cold, it doesn't get really windy. It's when we're in between cold snaps and warmups, that we have the worst winds." Day calls these "50-50 days." "When it's 50 degrees, you'll have 50 mph winds," he said. "If you don't like the wind, you better like the cold. That's just what it is to live in Wyoming." I don't know if you agree with him or not. He's the Wyoming meteorologist. You're the ones who've been living in Wyoming.Either way, you must admit this is pretty great weather for winter in the desert. The Sahara Desert is an "absolute desert" where almost no rain falls. Isaiah's original audience lived in a "tame desert" like here in Casper. In Israel, the rain is confined to the spring – March, April, and May. It's similar here, plus the snow in the winter. The Israelites lived in a physical desert. The Israelites also lived in a spiritual desert. The ten northern tribes of Israel were on the brink of destruction. The Assyrian army was about to overrun them. The people in the northern tribes would be carried into captivity to disappear from history. The two remaining southern tribes in Judah would be spared … but not for long. In a few generations, the Babylonians would move south to carry them into captivity in Babylon.Things looked bleak for Isaiah's audience. Things looked hopeless. Things looked desperate in the desert. The cities would be ghost towns. Their fields would be wastelands. Their people would be gone.God sent Isaiah as Israel's prophet because he wanted his people to understand why this was happening. It wasn't because God didn't love them. He did. He refused to watch them wallow in the filth of their sin any longer. He needed to show them how much they needed him. They needed a taste of his earthly discipline to repent and return. If they continued down their own way, they would experience God's eternal wrath.Do you feel like you're living in the desert? Not the physical desert of Casper or Wyoming. But the spiritual desert where your life appears bleak, dry, and dreary? Where it feels like God doesn't love you? If that's how you feel, I ask you, are you living in unrepentant sin? Are you confessing some sins while holding onto other sins? Are you going through the motions of Christianity while being passionate about other pursuits? Are you confessing one thing on Sunday morning but living out other things the rest of the week?Could your bleak, dry, and dreary life be brought on by yourself? God does not bless sin. He doesn't bless anything that pulls you away from his presence. Or could your spiritual desert be a result of God disciplining you like he did with Isaiah's audience?Like a good father, the Lord disciplines his children for their good. Jesus said, "I rebuke and discipline those whom I love. So take this seriously and repent" (Revelation 3:19). God uses discipline to lead us back to him. He lets us feel the pain of past mistakes. He permits us to stand in place surrounded by our shattered dreams and broken relationships. He lets us feel the misery of our own making. God does this to gain our attention. When we're lost in the desert, there's only one road that leads us to safety.Isaiah speaks of this road. "A highway will be there, a road that will be called the holy way. The impure will not walk there. It will be reserved for those who walk in that holy way. Wicked fools will not wander onto it. No lion will be there, nor will any ferocious animal go up on it. They will not be found there, but only the redeemed will walk there. Then those ransomed by the Lord will return. They will enter Zion with a joyful shout, and everlasting joy will crown their heads. Happiness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away" (Isaiah 35:8-10).Earlier this week, Austin Dirks was out hiking by himself in Arches National Park when he broke through what appeared to be solid ground. He got stuck at a 45-degree angle in quicksand. Thankfully, because Dirk is an experienced desert hiker, he had his satellite phone handy. He was rescued in the desert after 2 hours. Those in Isaiah's audience – and we in this audience – are stuck in something far worse than quicksand in the desert. We are stuck in a spiritual wasteland. Jesus our coming Messiah arrives to rescue us. He comes on the holy way that leads to Zion – the New Jerusalem – of the Christian Church. Our Messiah comes to us in Word and Sacraments to rescue, redeem, and lead us out of trouble into the safety of his Christian Church.Christ's way is a safe highway in the desert. There aren't any ferocious beasts on his highway. No lions in Israel. No coyotes, bears or mountain lions here. There won't be any wicked people or foolish people on this road. Unlike the semi drivers blown over on I-80 in 105 mph winds, clogging up traffic and putting everyone in danger. Everyone on Christ's highway knows where they're going. This road is reserved only for those who "walk in that holy way."This highway is only for the redeemed and ransomed. Those who were stuck and have been rescued. Those who were lost and have been found. Those who were trapped by the Devil and have been redeemed. Our Messiah traveled from the paradise of heaven into the desert of this world to rescue us. He brings us back on his highway.Brings us back to where? Christ rescues us from a bleak, dry, dreary desert to bring us into another desert. This is a very different desert. This is a desert that will be glad."The wilderness and the desert will be glad. The wasteland of the Arabah will rejoice and blossom like a crocus. It will bloom lavishly, and there will be great joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it. It will be excellent like Carmel and Sharon. They will see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. … Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unplugged. The crippled will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy. Waters will flow in the wilderness, and streams in the wasteland. The burning sand will become a pool, and in the thirsty ground there will be springs of water. There will be grass, reeds, and rushes where the haunts of jackals once lay" (Isaiah 35:1-2, 5-7).Christ's ministry as the Messiah is prophesied in these verses. What a dramatic reversal this will be! The wilderness will be watered. The wasteland will blossom. The desert will be a lush green place. The blind, deaf, lame, and mute within the desert will also be changed. The blind will see. The deaf will hear. The mute will speak. The lame will leap. I believe even the color blind will see colors. Like Jesus told John's disciples, these are the signs that point to him as the Messiah (Matthew 11:2-6).But this isn't just a physical transformation that will take place. Jesus doesn't promise your surgically repaired knees, old bones, sore muscles, hearing-aided ears, and glasses-improved eyes will be returned to new right now. Isaiah is prophesying an even more miraculous transformation that will take place within the heart of every traveler on his holy desert highway. With your eyes, you look upon your Savior on the altar. With your ears you hear the voice of Jesus calling you in Scripture, sermons, and Bible studies. With your tongue you pray, praise, and give thanks. With your arms and legs, you fulfill your vocations as Christian parents and children, citizens and students.Isaiah encourages, "Strengthen the weak hands, and make the shaky knees steady. Tell those who have a fearful heart: Be strong. Do not be afraid. Look! Your God will come with vengeance. With God's own retribution, he will come and save you" (Isaiah 35:3-4).The author of Hebrews quotes these verses, "Therefore strengthen your weak hands and feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated but rather healed" (Heb 12:12-13). The author's readers were being tempted to give up their faith because of persecution. He quotes Isaiah because there's an important message for those who are afraid of the Church's enemies. That important message is that our Messiah has come to rescue us. Jesus is no weak God or soft Man. He is the divine God-Man who flipped over tables and created enemies wherever he went. This is the Christ who comes with vengeance and divine retribution. Because we are followers of Christ, his enemies are our enemies. God wants us to stand strong in front of these enemies because these enemies won't be able to stand in front of him. God may use us as the arm of his vengeance. Get lean and in shape to be God's retribution. Strengthen your hands and knees so you are prepared to be God's vengeance when he calls you into battle. When we are strong in our hands and knees, we say with our Messiah, "They surrounded me, yes they surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I cut them off" (Psalm 118:11).God's vengeance is the just punishment for sin. When God brings his judgment upon his enemies, that will also mean salvation for God's people. St. Paul writes, "Certainly, it is right for God to repay trouble to those who trouble you, and to give relief to you, who are troubled along with us. When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his powerful angels, he will exercise vengeance in flaming fire on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Such people will receive a just penalty: eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from his glorious strength, on that day when he comes to be glorified among his saints, and to be marveled at among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed" (2 Thessalonians 1:6-10).All this will happen in the desert. The landscape parched with idolatry and paganism will become well-watered and green with the worldwide preaching of Christ's gospel. All this happens with the imminent arrival of the Messiah.Fellow desert inhabitants, our situation in life may not change. After all, we are still living in the desert. Thank God that – at least for now – our desert weather is better than everyone else's weather. Our physical desert of Casper and Wyoming is beautiful. By the grace of God, with the arrival of Christ our Messiah, he makes our spiritual desert beautiful, too. It's a desert that will be glad. Amen. The Lord reigns forever. Your God, O Zion, rules for all generations. Praise the Lord (Psalm 146:10). Amen.View this sermon (with video and/or audio recording) on our website: https://www.casperwels.com/sermons/the-desert-will-be-glad/

This week we consider the annunciation of Jesus in Luke 1:26-38, noticing its parallels and contrasts with the announcement of John the Baptist's coming, and understanding it through reference to some church Fathers, Gen 18, Ezekiel 8, Haggai 1, 2 Sam 7, and Isaiah 29:22. Luke uses his artistry and deep understanding of the Old Testament to show the link between the God-Man and his cousin John, and to put Jesus luminously in the spotlight.

On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (12/09/25), Hank shares his thoughts on the coming of Christ in flesh. What about the spirit? Frank - El Paso, TX (5:27)Can you explain what it means when Jesus says the days will be shortened in Matthew 24:22? God With Us (Advent 2025 – Part 2)Hebrews 2:14–17 shows that Christmas matters because God became truly human in Jesus—not in sin, but in our flesh—to accomplish what no one else could. By taking on our nature, Christ destroyed the devil's power, silenced his accusations, and freed us from the fear and slavery of death. As the perfect High Priest, He represents us before God, bears our sin in propitiation, and gives us His righteousness. Tears and Preaching Personal anecdote about crying and preaching Preacher Billy Kelly: “I’m too big to care what you think about me crying.” Tears as an immediate result of the Holy Spirit Tears, snot, etc. as an excuse John 14:11 Philip’s request: “Show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.” Jesus’ response: “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.” “I am in the Father, and the Father in me.” “The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.” “Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.” Jesus Christ: The God-Man 100% God and 100% man Mathematicians would say this is an impossibility People do not believe that Jesus is God Pharisees upset when Jesus equated himself to God Reason for wanting to kill Jesus: He said he was the Son of God Old Testament scriptures: indication of a Son of God? Spirit mentioned often Son of God references: prophecies about the Messiah, Emmanuel (God with us) Problem of the human heart: believing that Jesus Christ is God The Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Hard for the human mind to grasp Three are one and one are three Analogy: cherry pie with crust and filling God chose to reveal himself in three persons One no greater than the other, one no less than the other Importance of believing Jesus is God: Must bow to Christ to get to God One mediator between God and man: Jesus Christ Must be born again Reconciled unto the Father through the mediator (Jesus) The Only Begotten Son of God People take great liberties with the word of God Translations changed: “only begotten Son” to “unique one,” “only son,” or something else If Jesus is the only son, what are we? 1 John: “Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we have been called the sons of God.” Born-again believers are grafted in and adopted into the family of God Adopted in, not begotten in God’s only begotten son is Jesus Christ Trust must go into Christ Plan of God from the beginning: Recognized the way to present salvation to a sinner Had to send his only begotten son God had to become one of us for the supreme sacrifice Jesus had to take on flesh Jesus had to become what only Mary could be: a son conceived of the Holy Ghost Relevance of the birth of Jesus Christ: Virgin conceived of the Holy Ghost Not just another man born into the world The God-man was born Apart from Christ, you can’t be saved Must believe in Jesus and that he was virgin born Otherwise, he couldn’t have been God’s Son or the spotless Lamb God sent His Son, who became flesh and was God in the flesh Believe for the Very Works’ Sake Jesus’ words in John 14: “Believe me for the very works’ sake.” Raised the dead Gave sight to the blind Caused the deaf to speak and hear These works can only be done by the power of God Question to Philip: How long will you stand on the outside of simply believing in Jesus Christ? Challenge: If you truly believe in Jesus Christ, why don’t you trust him, serve him, surrender to him, and seek salvation? Jesus wasn’t just a good man, he was the God-man Many believe Jesus was a prophet They believe that Jesus existed He was a good man, a prophet, but more than that If Jesus is not the God-man to you, you’ll miss who he really was He was the only begotten Son of God Matthew 1:23 Quoting Isaiah 7:14 “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God with us.” Somebody needs to believe in Jesus because of who He is If he had been like you or me, he would not have been spotless, perfect, and acceptable unto God the Father There had to be a body for the sacrifice God searched heaven, earth, and under the earth, and there was none worthy Jesus prayed in the garden: “Father, if it be any other way, let it pass from me. Nevertheless, thy will be done.” No other way to save us but to send His own Son In order to be sacrificed, there had to be a body born of man God made a way for a virgin to bear his son Jesus has always existed; he did not begin in Bethlehem God had to make a way for his son to become flesh in order for him to become a sacrifice Jesus could suffer in your place, die in your place, and offer up his blood unto God as the eternal atonement and sacrifice for sin Either God sent his son to die for you, or Jesus was a fake Either Jesus was a liar, or he is the Lord Jesus was either a liar or he is the king of glory today God’s plan from the beginning was to make his son one of us, except without sin Wise Men and the Birth of Jesus Matthew 23: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God with us.” Wise men came from afar, traveled a great distance, and bowed before the young child Kings from the Orient presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh They saw a star and concluded that a king had been born They weren’t coming to find an earthly king They went to Herod and asked, “Where is he that is born king of the Jews?” God made a way for mankind to be saved through Jesus Christ The only means of salvation still is Jesus Christ John 1:14 Matthew begins with the genealogy and birth of Jesus Christ Luke tells much about the birth of Jesus Christ John introduces him this way: “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” “In the beginning was God, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” The Word refers to Jesus Christ himself Jesus is the word of God, the bread of life, the sustenance Jesus was the manna and the water that kept the children of Israel alive God recognized that Jesus had to be born John concluded that the Word was made flesh No man was involved in the birth of Jesus Christ Mary asked, “How can this be, since I know not a man?” The angel Gabriel explained: “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Thank God for the son given that day to become the sacrifice for my soul God-man born in the lowliest of conditions All John knew to say was, “The Word was made flesh.” Relevancy of who Jesus really is He’s the God of it John said the word he said it was made flesh he said and he dwelt among us he was trying to put this down he said we beheld his glory beheld his glory he said yes We beheld His glory as of the only begotten Son of God. Salvation is 100% dependent upon His Son God made no other way of salvation but through His Son Everything that we have concerning Jesus is of necessity John 10:28 Jesus said, “And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” No man or priest can give you eternal life The only way to get saved is through Jesus Jesus Christ is the giver of life “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” He is the God-man, the King of glory incarnate “My Father, which is greater than I, which gave them to me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” “I and my Father are one.” Eternal life that Jesus gives is able to keep you to everlasting Jesus made a clear statement concerning his position in God This declaration fired up the Pharisees to the point they wanted to stone him Jesus is God today He’s the God-man, sent to become our sacrifice 1 John 5:7 The Holy Ghost moving through the Apostle John to clarify the position of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost “For there are three that bear record in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one.” The record needs to make the difference for you Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” John concludes that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are one If Jesus was just a man, he couldn’t save you God had to send his son because there was no other way to be saved We celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ because God sent his son He was born of the virgin, having conceived of the Holy Spirit of God What was born that day was God in the flesh, the second part of Godhead, the God of man You’re believing in God, not just another man The only way to get reconciled with God is to believe in Jesus Christ, His Son Distinctions in the God-Man On his mother’s side, he’s the Son of Man On his father’s side, he’s the Son of God On his mother’s side, his name is Jesus On his father’s side, his name is Emmanuel, God with us On his mother’s side, he was a carpenter On his father’s side, he’s the creator of all heaven and earth On his mother’s side, he was born in a manger On his father’s side, he’s sitting on a throne today On his mother’s side, he was visited by shepherds and worshiped by wise men On his father’s side, he’s worshipped by the entire host of heaven On his mother’s side, he had no place to lay his head On his father’s side, he has a throne that’s sitting beside the holy and sovereign Lord of all On his mother’s side, they pierced him in his side and nailed him to his hands, and he bled out and died for us On his father’s side, he lives forever and still bears the scars of the man Jesus is the only mediator between God and man On his mother’s side, he had no keys to anything of his own On his father’s side, he has the keys of hell and death On his mother’s side, he had a birth date and a death date On his father’s side, he’s Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last “I am he that liveth and was dead and am alive forevermore.” On his mother’s side, he was baptized of John in the waters of the Jordan River On his father’s side, he baptizes all the believers with the Holy Spirit On his mother’s side, he was the healer of men On his father’s side, he’s the healer of our soul On his mother’s side, he calmed the raging sea On his father’s side, he created the sea itself On his mother’s side, he thirsted on the cross On his father’s side, he’s the fountain of living water for all that will believe him On his mother’s side, he was falsely condemned by the high priest On his father’s side, he sits as my high priest and ever makes intercession for me On his mother’s side, he shed his own blood for our sins On his father’s side, he took all that blood back and carried it up unto the Father as the payment for my sin On his mother’s side, he died on the cross On his father’s side, he had power to raise from the dead On his mother’s side, he was judged and condemned by sinful men On his father’s side, he is a judge and will judge rightly in that day Invitation “No man can come to the Father but by me.” God made a way for you to be saved All He’s asking you today is to come, trust Him, believe in yourself, confess your sin, and call upon the one that can forgive you of it Jesus Christ will do the very thing that he died to do for you today We can make this your birthday spiritually if you’ll trust Christ and believe him Consider in your heart today where you’re going to spend eternity If you’re not ready right now, read If you know right now that Jesus is not your Savior and you have never bowed to Christ, then you need to come, obey God, believe Him, trust Him, and call upon Him If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his You cannot claim to be going to heaven today unless you have the Holy Spirit living in you, that Jesus Christ is your Lord, that you have made Him your Savior You’ve received Christ as your own and you know that God is your Father today These three are one You cannot separate them but to distinguish the power of their work in all of our lives

The Messianic Jewish Expositor

Hi Folks. Thanks for joining me as we move ahead in our study of Hebrews. We're moving on to verses 2 and 3 of chapter one today but before we do that, I want to tell you about a friend of mine. He is no longer with us. His name was Joel (name changed for confidentiality purposes) and he was Jewish. He suffered from depression and always proclaimed forcefully that his depression was due to a chemical imbalance that required multiple medications to treat it. The treatment was never effective. He would sometimes say to me, “Art, I guess God wants me to be depressed”. Joel made a profession of faith in Jesus about 25 years ago. Now folks, please keep this true anecdote in mind because Hebrews was written to Jewish people some of whom may have been like Joel.Hebrews 1:1–3 NKJV1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,Last time we went over verse 1 and we talked about how God spoke to the ancient Hebrews through the prophets at many different times and in various ways. The prophets refers to the Old Testament prophets of course including the 16 writing prophets as well as those prophets who did not write specific books in the Old Testament that have been categorized as books of prophecy. Writing prophets would include those such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. The 16 writing prophets are divided into major and minor prophets but I need to mention at this point that what I am referring to as the 16 writing prophets would be in the Jewish tradition only 15 in number. The difference is Daniel. Hebrew tradition does not include Daniel in the Nevi'im, or Prophets. Daniel is included in the last or third section of the TaNaKh which is the Ketuvim or the writings. Now folks, we can say from Hebrews 1:2 alone that Jesus' ministry marked the beginning of the last days. Maybe that surprises you. But listen please.Hebrews 1:2 NIVbut in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.Folks, God spoke many things to the Jewish people of first century Israel through His Son Jesus and much of what He said has been preserved for us to read today. We will cover some of those things in our study of this book. But let's talk now for a minute or so about Jesus as God's Son. Jesus is God's Son in a very different way than we are sons and daughters of God. We are told that we are sons and daughters in the Gospel of John:John 1:12–13 NIVYet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.This verse talks about what happens to us when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior; we are born again and are transferred from being in Adam to being in Messiah or Christ. That's what John 1:12-13 is talking about and as incredible as that is - we becoming sons and daughters or children of God - we are not sons in the sense that Jesus is the Son of God. Because Jesus is not a created being and He is the one and only Son of God, He has to be of the same substance and nature as His Father. He has to be divine, He has to be deity. So please recognize that Jesus is the only unique Son of God and He is a Son - the Son - in a different way than we are. I also just want to remind you that God said He has a Son in the Old Testament in Psalm 2 and in Proverbs 30 and we talked about that last time. God's Son here is the Messiah. But getting back to Hebrews 1:2:Hebrews 1:2 NIVbut in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. In trying to grasp the profound meaning of this verse I think we can get some help by looking at John's Gospel:John 1:1–3 NIVIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. Now please take a look at Genesis 1:1:Genesis 1:1 NIVIn the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.Folks, God's Son did this. So, Who is this Son? We've already said that He is a Son like no other Son and that He is divine - He has the attributes of deity. But can we get a better understanding of that? I think we can. In John chapter 1 He is called the Word which in Greek is Logos and we are told that in the beginning He was with God and was God and that without Him nothing was made that was made. So, how is He, the Logos or Word and also God? Thanks to Arnold Fruchtenbaum, I've come to understand that the idea behind the Greek word Logos is better understood by the Aramaic word Memra, which also means word, and which was used in the Jewish Targums or paraphrases of the Hebrew Scriptures, recognized by many rabbis, to describe a visible appearance of God, somewhat similar to, yet different from, the Shekinah glory of God, like the pillar of fire that stayed with the Israelites in the desert following the Exodus. Sometimes this Memra would appear as the Angel of the LORD or the Angel of Yahweh such as we see in:Exodus 3:2 NIVThere the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.AND:Exodus 3:4 NIVWhen the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”Can you see from these 2 verses that there is an equivalence between the Angel of Yahweh and the LORD, meaning Yahweh Himself? The Apostle John was a Jewish man and would have been familiar with the Memra which means word. Logos was the closest Greek equivalent to Memra and so John used Logos as he was inspired to do by the Holy Spirit. This gives us an understanding of how Jesus is the Logos and God. He came as God in the flesh, God incarnate, and He was and is the same Divine Being that he was in the Old Testament where He temporarily came as the Angel of Yahweh. These appearances, in the Old Testament, were of the preincarnate Christ. Folks, this is mind blowing, is it not? But it's true! So, the Son of God - the Logos, or Memra, or Word - is like no other Son. Understanding this will help us greatly in this study of the letter to the Hebrews. And as the Divine Son of the Father, it becomes understandable that Yahweh, the Father, would appoint His one and only Son the Heir of all things. Likewise it makes sense that YHWH would appoint His Son to make the Universe, that the Universe would be made through Him. Folks, I don't want to get ahead of myself. We are in deep waters here but what wonderful deep waters they are! The Shema tells us that God is One but He is a complex or plural One. He is one God with a plural nature. We cannot fully understand this. But God allows us to understand it enough to know that it is absolutely true and that is a wonderful gift to us!But, getting back to the Scripture:Hebrews 1:2 NIVbut in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. So, what did the Son speak to us - and that applies to you and me - in these last days? Let me give you just a few things that He said:John 3:3 NIVJesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” And Jesus also said this:John 3:16 NIVFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. This is perhaps the most well known verse in the Bible. Both the essence and the assurance of salvation is encapsulated in this one verse. And Jesus said this:Matthew 22:36–40 NIV“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Folks, this is the essence of The New Covenant. This is the law that we are to follow now and it is a law that we can keep with the help of the Holy Spirit who indwells all believers. And Jesus also said this:John 19:30 NIVWhen he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Jesus finished the work of salvation. At a cost that we cannot comprehend, He has done it all.Folks, let's move on to verse 3 of chapter 1:Hebrews 1:3 (NIV)‌The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. The Jewish religious leaders were angry when Yeshua called Himself the Son of God. Because He was equating himself with deity.Let's look at John 5:18 NIV:‌For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.Yeshua is calling God His own Father or if I can take the liberty, His very own Father. In the Greek His own is idios. By using this word, idios, Yeshua is saying that God was His own private, personal, unique Father. If that were not so He would have used the usual Greek word for own which is autos. What about Jesus being the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being. How can we understand that better?Let's see if we can we get an idea of the glory of God from the Old Testament because those were the Scriptures that the writers of the New Testament had. Let's look at Psalm 97:1-6 NIV:The LORD reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice. [2] Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. [3] Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. [4] His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. [5] The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. [6] The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory. This is God's glory folks! Now let's look at something else:‌Exodus 24:9–10 (NASB95)Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel; and under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself. Now this was a glorious sight! They saw the God of Israel. But wait a minute! How could that be? Because if you see God you die, right? Now how do we know that?Leviticus 16:2 (NIV) The LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.AND:Exodus 33:19-23 (NIV) And the LORD said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. [20] But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.” [21] Then the LORD said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. [22] When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. [23] Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”Now let's read the passage again from Exodus 24:Exodus 24:9–10 (NASB95)Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel; and under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself. So, they saw God here. Why didn't they die? I think the reason that they did not die is because Who they saw was the pre-incarnate Christ, the Messiah, the Word of God, the Memra! And when you see the Messiah, you don't die because He is both God and man in one person.Folks, Jesus is the exact representation of the Father. He is God. He is God incarnate, God in the flesh, Perfect God and Perfect man. Not two separate beings inside one person. No, Jesus' nature and character embody perfect God and perfect man in one person. He was and still is today the God-Man. He had to be in order to be our Savior - the Savior of mankind. We'll hear more about that as we go on further in this epistle.Folks, let's continue with Hebrews 1:3:“The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”Jesus sustains all things by His powerful word. What does that mean? Word in Hebrews 1:3 is not the Logos. Word here in the Greek is rhema and it means spoken word. So just as God spoke the universe into existence with incomprehensible power in Genesis, Jesus upholds or sustains all things by His spoken word, or we could phrase it like this: Jesus upholds all things by the power of His word. Let's look at just one example of the power of God's spoken word in the Hebrew Scriptures, in Genesis:Genesis 1:14–15 (NIV) And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so.And God said. The word for said in Hebrew is amar. You could translate it as declared. God declared that the sun and the moon and the stars and the planets come into existence out of nothing and that's exactly what happened. And we know that all things were made through Yeshua. We read that earlier in John 1:3; let's read it again:John 1:3 NIVThrough him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. That includes the sun and the moon and the stars and the planets! And in like manner, Yeshua/Jesus sustains or upholds all things by the power of His word.Moving on in Hebrews 1:3 “The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”‌How did Yeshua provide purification for sins? Before we try to answer that question, let me pose another question: Could God have merely declared all our sins forgiven without the cross? Would that have taken care of everything? WAS THE CROSS REALLY NECESSARY? I'm going to ask you to keep that question in mind for a minute or two. We'll come back to it.Now let's look at something that might seem slightly off the topic, but it isn't. Let's talk about justification. Justification is when God as judge makes a judicial decision, and He states it as a judge in a courtroom would do. He declares it. He declares that our sins are forgiven, and our unrighteous nature is exchanged for the perfectly righteous nature of Christ. God pours out our sins on the Messiah – He takes our sins, and His perfect righteousness is imputed or credited to us. An exchange occurs. God declares us justified. That's exactly what He did for Abraham. He declares you and me righteous when we are saved. He gives us the status of righteousness. The power of God's word is beyond what we can comprehend. It created the universe, and it accomplishes our justification. So, back to the question I asked you to keep in mind a minute ago. Could God have simply declared that all our sins are forgiven and have done nothing more? No. Why not? There are several reasons. For one, the wrath of God must be turned away from us. Something called propitiation is necessary. There must be a sacrifice, a blood sacrifice of infinite value, to appease a wrathful God, and Jesus Christ is the only One who can do that. Please know, folks, that if a preacher denies the wrath of God and says that a declaration of forgiveness from God with nothing else behind it is enough, that preacher is teaching his congregation a false gospel. No, folks, an incalculable price was paid for you and me to be justified. The Son of God gave His life on the cross in payment for our justification. Should this be of particular interest to Jewish people? Yes. In fact, I have a question for my Jewish listeners:What if the temple and the Jewish priesthood and all the accoutrements of the temple service were recreated tomorrow and the blood sacrifices of animals without defect was resumed? Would that accomplish what the cross accomplished? No. Why?Let's take a look at Romans chapter 6:Romans 6:4-7 (NIV) We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. [5] For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. [6] For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— [7] because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.The things described in these verses – being buried with Christ, being united with Christ, our old self, our old man or old woman, dying in Him on the cross, and then being resurrected, raised to newness of life, in Him – all these things require Yeshua's substitutionary death on the cross. Because He did not come only to forgive our sins but to make us new men and women. We are born again. No animal sacrifice can ever do that.‌In closing, let's read Hebrews 1:3 once more and make a final comment or two:Hebrews 1:3 :“The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”Jesus sits down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. He died for us, He was buried, He was raised from the grave by the power of God, proving that He was the Son of God, and 40 days later He ascended to heaven and sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven, in victory. He finished it all and sat down. Folks, a person sits down when the task assigned to him has been completed. That's why Jesus said “It is finished”.What God has done for us is beyond comprehension. Before I close, let's not forget that He sent His Son so that each one of us could spend eternity in heaven with Him. If you don't know Him, if you are not saved, if you are not born again, please call upon Him today and say “Lord, I know that I'm a sinner. I don't want to pay the price of eternal separation from you - eternal death – because of my sins. Please pay the debt that I owe and cleanse me so I can spend eternity with you. Thank you, Lord Yeshua.”And now, Folks, I want to go back to my friend Joel, who was depressed. Joel professed faith in Messiah but he never read the Bible and he never regularly attended any congregation. He said that God wanted him to be depressed. Folks, I believe that what God wanted was for Joel to ask Him for help. I don't know if Joel ever did that. I believe that had Joel sincerely called upon the Lord, He would have helped him abundantly. Joel could have come before the throne of grace. Please listen to this verse:Hebrews 4:16 NKJV16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.My friends, until the next time, this is Art Wolinsky. IntroductionThe crucifixion, intended as a deterrent by Rome, is intedened to kill people in a demeaning, painfully slow way. The intention was to deter anyone from rebelling against Rome.A successful execution is when someone stays dead. A really successful crucifixion is when one is deterred and broken against any hope of rising above the empire. The irony of the cross is that Christ faces the consequences of being nailed to the tree like a covenant breaker. He does so showing that this age is not a place of rest because he is an innocent man sent to death. It important to note that while Rome miscarries justice we witness heaven's court overturning the miscarriage of justice. The death of Christ is necessary to bear the penalty of sin. However, the resurrection is even more necessary because it testifes to Christ's innocence. Luke wants us to understand that the death was not a failure, a plan B, but it was the intended plan to overturn the fall's consequences.Resurrection RevealedThe women, witnessing the burial, returned to the tomb on the first day of the week with spices, expecting to find Jesus' body. Instead, they encountered two angels in dazzling apparel who reminded them of Jesus' prophecy of his resurrection, leading the women to believe and share the news that Jesus had risen. We are forced to see that we do not prepare Christ for this age. It is Christ who redeems, secures, and is preparing us to dwell with him in paradise. Christ is our shield and defender who secures our place.Resurrection RejectedTwo disciples, Cleopas and another, walk to Emmaus. They are lamenting Jesus' death and dismissing the women's resurrection testimony. Jesus, unrecognized, joins them and rebukes their lack of understanding, explaining how the prophets foretold his death and resurrection. He then explains the scriptures, revealing himself as the Messiah and fulfilling the prophecies. Our problem is that we fail to see the depth of sin. Our bigger problem is we fail to see the resurrection power that is working with in us.Resurrection RegardedTwo men on the road to Emmaus invite a stranger, who is Christ, and their eyes are hidden from seeing him. They express their disappointment that Christ has died. They see this as Christ's failure rather than a necessity for Christ to fulfill his mission.Christ teaches them that this is what the prophets said. Christ is the embodiment of God's word. He fulfills the mission. He is the perfect God-Man who is hung upon the tree as a covenant breaker. The cross is not becasue Christ failed, but because Christ had to fulfill this mission. They end up inviting Christ to stay with them for the night. During a meal, Christ breaks bread, revealing his identity to them before disappearing. This encounter emphasizes Christ's role in preparing us for glory and highlights his patience and mission despite our doubts and misunderstandings.ConclusionThe cross is significant because it represents the depth of sin and the necessity of what it takes to overcome the consequence of the fall. Christ's sacrifice for redemption does not end in death, but ultimately in resurrection. Christ's resurrection is heaven's veto to the world's death sentence. It is because Christ has been raised that believers currently possess new life and a guarantee (down payment) of eternal life in Christ and with him in paradise forever.Let us never minimize the significance of the resurrection. Let us push forward in the confidence that our Lord is our shield and defender. He is the Lord of life and not death. As we take hold of Christ by faith we share in that victory.

Isaiah 9:6 tells us what Jesus, the name above all names, means to us. Pastor Greg Laurie brings us insight in this message. Notes: Focus verse - Isaiah 9:6 Jesus Christ. That is the name above all names. Isaiah 9:6For unto us a Child is born,Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be calledWonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. From Heaven’s perspective, Jesus was given. From earth’s perspective, Jesus was born. Jesus lived our life and then He died our death. The first Christmas gift was not a gift to a child but the gift of a child. Each of these descriptions of Jesus’ name deals with an important part of our life. Jesus said, “Lo, I come, in the volume of the book it is written of Me.(Hebrews 10:7 KJV) Jesus is in the Old Testament concealed and in the New Testament revealed. Jesus said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day: and he saw it, and was glad.”(John 8:56 KJV) Jacob wrestled with Jesus. Before conquering Jericho, Joshua met Jesus and bowed before Him. Let’s look at these descriptions Isaiah gives us of Christ. #1 His name is Wonderful: this takes care of the dullness of life. Wonderful comes from the word wonder. There is nothing this world has to offer that will fill the void in your life. That’s where Jesus comes in. The word, wonder, means:amazement, surprise, astonishment, admiration, bewilderment, worship, and awe. The best way to sum it up is, “God is awesome!” Knowing this wonderful God personally takes care of the dullness of life. When the shepherds shared what happened,“All that heard it wondered at these things told to them by the shepherds.”(Luke 2:18) Everything about Jesus was wonderful:His birth, His life, His words, His death, and His resurrection. Wonder will lead to worship and a desire to know Jesus better. #2 His name is Counselor: this takes care of the decisions of life. Do you know that God wants to give personal counsel and direction to you? Psalm 73:24 (NKJV)You will guide me with Your counsel,And afterward receive me to glory. Almighty God, the Everlasting Father, Jesus Christ, is offering you His counsel. Jesus, our Counselor, has a plan for our lives. Jesus has given us His word so we might learn to think and act biblically.Everything you need to know about God and life is found in Scripture. 2 Timothy 3:16–17All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is trueand to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do. But your Counselor, Jesus, is very involved and wants the best for you. Jesus, our Counselor, prays for us too. #3 His name is Mighty God: this takes care of the demands of life. Jesus Christ was not just a “good man,” but the “God-Man.” The Creator became a creation. He did not lose His deity, but He added humanity. Eternal, yet an infant, the Infinite became touchable. Jesus was fully God and became fully man. Jesus did not become identical to us, but He did become identified with us. Jesus could not have identified with us more closely than He did.It was total identification without any loss of identity. Jesus claimed to be God many times. On one occasion, Jesus was crossing the Sea of Galilee and He fell asleep. What could be more human than that? Jesus rebuked the storm and it stopped instantly. What could be more divine than that?He was fully God. Being fully human reminds you that He understands what you are facing. Some say, “It’s very hard to be a Christian.” It’s impossible to be a Christian without the power of Jesus Christ. That’s like trying to run your electric car with no charge. We work out what God has already worked in. We don’t manufacture the power, we access it. You say, “I can’t break free from drugs or drinking or immorality.”The bible says, “You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” #4 His name is Everlasting Father: this takes care of the future of life. We know life is not merely what we experience here and now on earth. As Christians, we will live forever. God is the Everlasting Father. He will always be there for you. With so many broken homes today and absentee fathers, this is a great comfort. You have an Everlasting Father who chose you. After His resurrection, Jesus said to Mary, “I go to my Father and your Father.” #5 His name is Prince of Peace: this takes care of the disturbances of life. In the storms of life, we all long for peace within. Isaiah 9:6And the government shall be upon His shoulder. For over 2000 years we are awaiting the fulfillment of this verse when Jesus returnsand establishes His kingdom (at the end of the 7-year Tribulation). When Christ returns there will be no more corruption, war, or terrorism. He will reign righteously as King of kings and Lord of lords. Bierkergaard: The Writings of Soren Kierkegaard

Soren writes about the internal "Soul Sorrow" of Jesus. The "Divine Incognito" obscures an inner sorrow of coming into a world broken by sin. One that the God-Man has been ordained to restore by His broken body. Lowrie suggests that Kierkegaard has soul sorrow in his breaking of the Engagement to Regine. While having an outward incognito of being the least serious man in Copenhagen.

Bierkergaard: The Writings of Soren Kierkegaard

Jesus Christ, as the "Divine Incognito”, is the God-Man who willingly laid down the prerogatives of Deity to become a servant. Even to death on a cross.

Science Assumes Intelligent Design cannot be challenged.  Christianity has assumed that Jesus is God and the debate is over. The Gospel the Apostles Preached After forty days of instruction, the apostles proclaimed: God sent, raised, and exalted Jesus. (Acts 2:22–36; 3:13; 5:30–31) Their gospel: what God did through a man, not what God became in a man. Acts 10:38 – “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth… for God was with Him.” John's Message about the Word “The Word became flesh” reveals God's wisdom and power embodied in Jesus. “My flesh… for the life of the world” shows flesh as God's provision, not incarnation. (John 1:14; 6:51) Proverbs 8:22–30 – Wisdom beside God from the beginning. The True Accusation Jesus was condemned for claiming to be the Messiah, not God Himself. Mark 14:61–64; Matthew 26:63–65; Luke 23:2–3 The inscription read: “King of the Jews,” not “God of the Jews.” (John 19:19–22) The Law of Agency In Jewish thought: “A man's agent is as himself.” Jesus spoke and acted fully in God's Name. (Exodus 23:21; John 5:43; 14:10; 17:11) Conclusion God didn't become man to save us—He sent a man, His Son, to reveal and redeem. 1 Timothy 2:5; Romans 5:19; Acts 2:36The post Who Told You That? “Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6 NLT) You’ve probably heard more than a few objections to the inevitable answer to this question. “How can Christians say that Jesus is the only way to God?” “Are you saying that if someone doesn’t believe in Jesus, then they’re going to Hell?” “Do you understand how narrow-minded that thinking is?” “Why are you so intolerant of other people’s beliefs?” “Why can’t you be more inclusive?” Let’s get one thing straight. The only reason I say that Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father is because Jesus Himself said it. Look again at those words in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (NLT). In Acts 4:12, the apostle Peter put it this way: “There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved” (NLT). Why? Because only Jesus Christ was qualified to bridge the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity. Jesus Christ—not just a good man, but the God-Man—died in our place and took the full wrath of the Father upon Himself because there was no other way that we could settle the debt that we owed God. Only Jesus Christ could conquer sin and death and make it possible for us to live forever with Him. Such exclusivity is hard for a lot of people to embrace. Some say, “I choose to believe that whatever religion you want to follow is fine. As long as you sincerely believe, God will let you into Heaven.” The problem with that reasoning is that Adolf Hitler probably believed in his heart that what he was doing was right. Does anyone want to suggest that his sincere belief should earn him a place in Heaven? Others say, “I don’t believe that Jesus was God. I believe that He was an influential philosopher and a great moral teacher, but nothing more than that.” C. S. Lewis responded to that kind of thinking with these words: “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell.” Lewis concluded, “You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” Jesus is the only way to God. The Christian faith is built on that truth. Reflection question: What would you say to someone who believes that all paths lead to God?
