Jesus Christ, as the "Divine Incognito”, is the God-Man who willingly laid down the prerogatives of Deity to become a servant. Even to death on a cross.
Science Assumes Intelligent Design cannot be challenged. Christianity has assumed that Jesus is God and the debate is over. The Gospel the Apostles Preached After forty days of instruction, the apostles proclaimed: God sent, raised, and exalted Jesus. (Acts 2:22–36; 3:13; 5:30–31) Their gospel: what God did through a man, not what God became in a man. Acts 10:38 – “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth… for God was with Him.” John's Message about the Word “The Word became flesh” reveals God's wisdom and power embodied in Jesus. “My flesh… for the life of the world” shows flesh as God's provision, not incarnation. (John 1:14; 6:51) Proverbs 8:22–30 – Wisdom beside God from the beginning. The True Accusation Jesus was condemned for claiming to be the Messiah, not God Himself. Mark 14:61–64; Matthew 26:63–65; Luke 23:2–3 The inscription read: “King of the Jews,” not “God of the Jews.” (John 19:19–22) The Law of Agency In Jewish thought: “A man's agent is as himself.” Jesus spoke and acted fully in God's Name. (Exodus 23:21; John 5:43; 14:10; 17:11) Conclusion God didn't become man to save us—He sent a man, His Son, to reveal and redeem. 1 Timothy 2:5; Romans 5:19; Acts 2:36The post Who Told You That? Jesus Is a God-Man first appeared on Living Hope.

"In India, we don't use the word 'cult' but the photo of a godman hangs in every other home and it's all placed under the umbrella of culture. Cults go after the most vulnerable, those who are not thinking with their rational mind. That's exactly what happened with my parents. When they saw death, they gravitated towards what gave them most certainty. The majority of people going to such gurus are going for something related to their health; they are going in the hope of getting better. It could be related to disease, addiction or poverty. When you don't get answers from anywhere, you go to someone who gives answers as the guru did in my parents' case. People won't get healed but they are hooked by the continuous promise that if they sustain on this path, things will change. When you become part of a cult, there is manipulation, fear and guilt. In my case, everything got attached to my mother's wellbeing; that if you don't follow the rules, she will lose her life. You start getting manipulated because you don't want her to die. I see my parents as victims too. Within the cult, you are only allowed to do certain things like watch the guru's sermons or listen to his mantras. After a while, from disuse, your brain starts to atrophy and you lose critical thinking because you are not allowed to question anything, These cults may be born from any religion; the thing is they distort the teachings of that religion to suit their own narrative. This is possibly the first book by an Indian about being influenced by a cult. I'm trying to create awareness so people can spot when this happens. You need mental health professionals to deprogram victims because indoctrination changes your brain wiring. There has to be a larger systemic change with the creation of proper programmes so victims can be led back into their lives."- Priyamvada Mehra, author, The Cost of a Promised Afterlife, talks about how her family was drawn into the fold of godman Rampal after her mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour, the blind belief that led to the deterioration of her condition, the proliferation of religious charlatans who prey on those who have lost hope, and the mental abuse that being part of a cult entails Learn more about your ad choices. This Man who confronted Jacob at the Ford of Jabbok was the God Man, and none other but the pre-incarnate Christ. He came to Jacob when Jacob was alone and wrestled with him, confronted him, and would not allow him to cross into Canaan until Jacob was weakened and brought into a place of having no strength to trust in himself, but rather in God and God alone.
This Sunday, Dr. Peter Tie delivers a message titled, "Incarnation."
He came to what was his own, yet his own people did not accept him. But to all who did receive him, to those who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (John 1:11-12). Amen."On the 300th anniversary of the Reformation (1817), one of the most powerful rulers in Germany attempted to unify both Lutheran and Reformed churches into one Evangelical church. The government mandated a common confession that blended Lutheran and Reformed beliefs. Those who opposed the policy had two choices: establish a free church, deprived of government financial support, or leave Germany. Some of them left and sought religious freedom in the United States. They were known as the Old Lutherans, or Strict Lutherans, and wanted to be free to practice their Lutheran faith" (Christ Through Us, p. 4)."When they came to the American West, they carried their German Bibles, hymnbooks, and copies of devotion books from the old country and gathered in homes for worship, hymn singing, and Bible reading. Often there were no pastors to teach them or conduct services. Someone would be chosen to lead the singing and perhaps also to read. With so few pastors on the frontier, differences in doctrine were ignored. The German Christians, Reformed and Lutheran, simply agreed to disagree. The Lutheran Confessions remained silent protests to set aside for the sake of unity and convenience When the people established congregations, sometimes they were gatherings of both Lutheran and Reformed protestants" (Christ Through Us, p. 5)."In reality, opposing doctrines often stood side by side in silent opposition and tension. The sound of axes and the struggle to create families, homes, and productive farms were more important" (Christ Through Us, p. 5).Three pastors - John Muehlhaeuser, John Weinmann, and William Wrede – founded a new synod called the "German Evangelical Lutheran Ministerium of Wisconsin," which later became the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The official founding of the synod was on May 26, 1850, at Salem Lutheran Church in Granville, which is now part of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Though Strict Lutherans had fled Germany because of religious persecution, these three pastors did not care for the restrictive views of the Strict Lutherans. They preferred a Mild Lutheran synod that would allow them to also minister to the Reformed in their communities. The founding of our church body was not with strong, doctrinal, confessional Lutheran convictions. The beginning of the WELS was indeed small, even weak. We will discover over these three sermons and our ten-week Bible study on the history of the WELS, that this young Wisconsin Synod did something almost unheard of among Christian church bodies. By God's grace, it grew more biblically sound over it's 175 years.Today we examine the blessing of Christ for us. It's a rare blessing from the Lord that any church body teaches the gospel with remarkable clarity, much less for 175 years. We haven't done anything to deserve this blessing. Instead, Christ has done everything for us. He died for us, he rose for us, he saved us, and he reconciled us to God the Father. St. Paul lays all this out for us in Romans 5.Paul writes, "God shows his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Paul explained earlier that what makes us sinners is that we are "ungodly" (Romans 5:6). Being godly means doing the will of God. But we do the opposite of God's will. We don't put God first in our lives. We take his holy name in vain. We don't worship God. We don't honor God's representatives in the home or government. We allow our temper to get the better of us. We lust, steal, covet, and gossip. All this makes us ungodly sinners. And yet, while we were ungodly, Christ, the perfect God-Man, died for us. In our place. As our Substitute. Look at Jesus hanging dead on the cross and then think of all the biblical stand-ins – the ram that spared Isaac (Genesis 22:13); the Passover lamb (Exodus 12:21); the scapegoat of Yom Kippur (Leviticus 16:21), the Suffering Servant of Isaiah: "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). Christ is the stand-in for sinners. Christ is the vicarious Victim.Paul explains that being ungodly sinners, we are God's natural-born enemies. "Therefore, since we have now been justified by his blood, it is even more certain that we will be saved from God's wrath through him. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, it is even more certain that, since we have been reconciled, we will be saved by his life" (Romans 5:9,10)You may consider yourself a good, decent, hard-working, church-going, right-decision-making Christian. Still, even you are an ungodly, sinful, enemy of God. Yet, this is how God shows his love for us – while we were still sinners and God's enemies, Jesus Christ died for us. He took the place of his enemies. Not his family. Not his buddies. He died for those who wanted him dead. For those who wanted nothing to do with him. That's you and me.One life in exchange for another. He becomes the sinner in place of every sinner; and we in him become the saint – holy and righteous before God. That's what Paul means when he says, "Since we have now been justified by his blood, it is even more certain that we will be saved from God's wrath through him." By saving us from God's righteous wrath, Jesus changed our eternal destination from hell to heaven. When God looks at you, he doesn't see your sin any more, but he sees the blood of his Son covering your sinfulness. He sees only little Jesuses. Even though your sins are many and great, Jesus' divine blood is greater. He became your sin in his death, and you received his life.St. Paul continues, "For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, it is even more certain that, since we have been reconciled, we will be saved by his life. And not only is this so, but we also go on rejoicing confidently in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received this reconciliation" (Romans 5:10-11)."Reconcile" means to win enemies over to friendliness. When I was playing soccer in college, there were players on a certain team that were taking me out. I was slide tackling them, too. It was rough! The ref had to get involved. But after the season was over, the players on that team invited me to their college to play indoor soccer on their intramural team. We had been sworn enemies. But we were reconciled. Most of the time, when there is reconciliation between bitter opponents, warring nations, fighting spouses, or arguing neighbors, each party has to give a little to get a little. That's not the way it worked with our reconciliation with God. We were God's bitter enemies. While we remained enemies, Christ made peace with us. We weren't doing the work that was assigned to us. We cheated on God. We were unfaithful followers and disloyal children. Still, Jesus entered our world to restore peace between us and God. We didn't give up anything ... except our sins. Christ is the One who gave up everything – he gave up heaven to suffer hell on the cross; he gave his perfection to us; he who cannot die as God, became Man so that he could die.On Good Friday, in the darkness of Jesus' death, God said to the world, "I am at peace with you." In your Baptism, when water was poured on you in the Name of the Triune God, the Father said, "I am at peace with you." In the Supper, with Jesus' own Body and Blood as his gift to you, God says again, "I am at peace with you."Brothers and sisters, take the time right now to bow your head and repent of your being God's natural-born enemy – an enemy that killed the Son of God with your sins.Silence for private confession.Reconciled children of our Heavenly Father, you are forgiven. Your name is written in the wounds of Jesus. Christ has dipped his pen in the crimson ink of his divinely human veins and written your name in the Lamb's Book of Life. Jesus promises, "I certainly will not erase his name from the Book of Life, and I will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels" (Revelation 3:5). Jesus has engraved your name on the palms of his hands. God promises, "Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands" (Isaiah 49:16). Jesus has now set up his divine kingdom within your heart. That means he rules over your soul, mind, and body. Jesus says, "The kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21).You were once at war with your heavenly Father. Like Adam and Eve, you ran away and tried hiding from God. But Jesus came as the Seed of the Woman and the Serpent-Crusher (Genesis 3:15). You are the flesh that will return to dust. But the Son of God is the Word who became flesh and dwelled among us (John 1:14). Jesus did all this to reconcile you to your heavenly Father. He has forgiven you. You are now God's friend. God's saint. God's child. You did nothing to bring about this reconciliation. God did it all through Jesus Christ. In Baptism, you didn't commit yourself to Christ; he committed himself to you. In those waters he crucified you with himself, laid your body with his in the tomb, and he carried you forward into the light of eternal life. Jesus promises, "He who believes and is baptized shall be saved" (Mark 16:16). That faith is not a conviction you created but a gift you received. By the Holy Spirit you confess, "Jesus is Lord" (1 Corinthians 12:3).Reconciled. Do you realize the implications? It isn't a matter of you "getting right with God" but of you believing that Christ has made you right with God. You weren't reconciled and made a Christian because you were so great a person, or had a heart that was so pure, or because you were so awesome that God just had to have you. Nope. It was because you were so unrighteous that Christ covered you with the clothing of his righteousness. It was because you were living for yourself that Christ lived for you, and then died for you, and then lives for you again. It wasn't because you asked Jesus to be your Savior that you were saved. It was because while you were still a sinner, Christ died for you, chose you, called you, and washed you clean in his own divine blood. You might have heard people say, "God loves you just the way you are." That sounds nice and loving. But when people say that they are often using those words to excuse someone's sinful lifestyle and harmful choices.A better way to speak is to say, "God loves you just the way you are. ... But he also loves you too much to let you stay that way."God loved you while you were still a sinner and his enemy. But he didn't let you remain in your sin or continue as his enemy. You were an enemy that Jesus saw needed changing. He didn't leave you the way you were. What would be the point in that?If you were going to stay the same, then what would have been the purpose of Jesus living and dying for you. No, while you were still an enemy of God, Jesus reconciled you to himself. He chose you while you were his enemy so he could make you a child of God. He chose you when you were a sinner so he could remake you into a saint. He chose you while you were still friends with the devil so he could remake you into a brother or sister of Christ.By God's grace, this is the message of Christ for you that generations of Lutherans in the Wisconsin Synod have been blessed to hear for the past 175 years from pulpits in our churches, learn in the classrooms of our grade schools and high schools, receive from the water in the baptismal fonts, and accept in the Body and Blood at the Lord's Table. By that same grace of God, this is the message of Christ for you that has been proclaimed here at Lord of Lords for the past 45 years. In this small church body we call the Wisconsin Synod, God has done something that is almost unheard of among Christian church bodies. "While most other church bodies have merged into larger bodies and lost their bodies and lost their distinctiveness or simply folded and disappeared into the mists of history as the decades have passed. But not the Wisconsin Synod" (Christ Through Us, viii). Our little Wisconsin Synod has grown more biblically sound over the past 175 years. That has only happened because we, always by God's grace, continue to proclaim a message of reconciliation – of Christ for us. Amen. The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. We have seen his glory, the glory he has as the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14). Amen.View this sermon (with video and/or audio recording) on our website: https://www.casperwels.com/sermons/christ-for-us/

This week at Echo Church, Pastor Jason Polk launched a new series through the Gospel of John. He shared how John's gospel is unique—it's not a timeline of events, but an intimate portrait from Jesus' closest friend. In John 1:1–18, we meet Jesus as the Word, the Light, and the Life. Jason explained: The Word – God's final revelation of His heart. The Light – shining in darkness, guiding us forward. The Life – offering freedom, healing, and new creation. The series will unpack Jesus as Son of God, Man of God, and Lamb of God. Today, the focus was on His divinity—Jesus is God Himself, present at creation, now inviting us to believe and become children of God. Want to dive deeper? Join us this Sunday at Echo Church. Don't miss it!
Does the Bible Declare that “Jesus a God-Man”?We compare mainstream Christian belief with the biblical declarations and find a big difference. Some Scriptures from this episode:John8:40: “I am a man who told you the truth that I heard from God…” Acts2:22: "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attestedto you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through himin your midst, as you yourselves know- Acts17:31: “because He (God) has fixed a day on which he will judge the world inrighteousness by a man whom He has appointed; and of this He has givenassurance to all by raising him from the dead. Romans5:15: "For if many died through the trespass of one man, much more havethe grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christabounded for many." Romans5:19: "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by oneman's obedience many will be made righteous." 1 Corinthians 15:21: “Forsince death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also came througha man” 1 Cor.15:21: “For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection ofthe dead.”1Timothy 2:4-6: God "…desires all men to be saved and to come to aknowledge of the truth. “Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6 NLT) You’ve probably heard more than a few objections to the inevitable answer to this question. “How can Christians say that Jesus is the only way to God?” “Are you saying that if someone doesn’t believe in Jesus, then they’re going to Hell?” “Do you understand how narrow-minded that thinking is?” “Why are you so intolerant of other people’s beliefs?” “Why can’t you be more inclusive?” Let’s get one thing straight. The only reason I say that Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father is because Jesus Himself said it. Look again at those words in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (NLT). In Acts 4:12, the apostle Peter put it this way: “There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved” (NLT). Why? Because only Jesus Christ was qualified to bridge the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity. Jesus Christ—not just a good man, but the God-Man—died in our place and took the full wrath of the Father upon Himself because there was no other way that we could settle the debt that we owed God. Only Jesus Christ could conquer sin and death and make it possible for us to live forever with Him. Such exclusivity is hard for a lot of people to embrace. Some say, “I choose to believe that whatever religion you want to follow is fine. As long as you sincerely believe, God will let you into Heaven.” The problem with that reasoning is that Adolf Hitler probably believed in his heart that what he was doing was right. Does anyone want to suggest that his sincere belief should earn him a place in Heaven? Others say, “I don’t believe that Jesus was God. I believe that He was an influential philosopher and a great moral teacher, but nothing more than that.” C. S. Lewis responded to that kind of thinking with these words: “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell.” Lewis concluded, “You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” Jesus is the only way to God. The Christian faith is built on that truth. Reflection question: What would you say to someone who believes that all paths lead to God? BURNT: The Sacred Center of Christ Leviticus 1 “All the offerings taken together give us a full view of Christ—as many mirrors arranged to reflect in various ways the figure of that true and perfect sacrifice.” —C.H.M. (C.H. Mackintosh) A Story of Pure Devotion My mind recalls a young, dark-haired Canadian girl, whose beauty lay not so much in her features as in the quiet creativity of her words. She was a writer of poetry and prose, able to describe a moment with the grace of a Victorian novelist. My eyes would often drift to the tattered journal she carried—the weight of it owed not to its binding, but to the sheer volume of ink pressed upon its pages. She never parted with it. Its contents, I am certain, were treasures untold. One random Saturday turned quietly unforgettable when I asked why she had left her cherished treasury behind. “I burnt it,” she said. I gasped at the waste. “Why?” She looked directly into my eyes. “Some things,” she whispered, “are for Him alone.” The hours, thoughts, pains, sorrows, joys, and life lessons she penned rose to His eyes alone. Her ink became incense. Her intent was to give her most cherished work to Him—and this, she did. What Is Burnt Is Gone When something is truly burnt, it passes beyond possession. It can no longer be handled, owned, or used. It is consumed. Surrendered to the flame, it becomes smoke ascending, curling upward— beyond the reach of man, beyond sight of man, beyond the control of man. It cannot be claimed by anyone but the heavens to which it ascends. This fully and finally. The Burnt Offering Such is the burnt offering of old. It is an offering for God alone. Unlike the other sacrifices, it is laid upon the stones for one purpose only: to rise to God. It is the first of the offerings described in Leviticus. When the animal is burnt, it passes beyond possession. It can no longer be handled, owned, or used. It is consumed. Surrendered to the altar, it has become smoke—ascending, curling upward— beyond the reach of man, beyond the sight of man, beyond the control of man. It cannot be claimed by anyone but the God to whom it ascends—fully and finally. Christ, the Sacred Burnt Offering This is a divine type and shadow, revealing to us the sacred center of Christ's heart— the sacred center of His manifold sacrifice. When Christ was laid on the altar of the cross, He could no longer be handled, owned, or used. He was, in a real sense, consumed by death. Surrendered to God, He became a sweet-smelling savor, curling upward— beyond the reach of man, beyond the sight of man, beyond the control of man. He could be claimed by none but His Father, to whom He ascended fully and finally. Christ, the final burnt offering—an obedience to God, just for God. Ephesians 5:2 — “…a sacrifice to God.” Commentary from the Saints C.H. Mackintosh writes: “It was exclusively for God. God alone was the object of Christ in the burnt offering aspect of His death.” “Here is the deep-toned devotion of the heart of the Son presented to, and appreciated by, the heart of the Father.” In the burnt offering, Christ's charms shine bright through His unshakable devotion to His Father. Spurgeon notes: “The burnt offering was all for God. So was Christ. His death was above all things God-ward.” The Holy Spirit reveals to us in this shadow that Christ loved the Father before the church. What excellency! What beauty and perfection! Surely His love to the Father is sufficient to rouse love in our hearts. Mackintosh continues: “The true believer finds in the cross that which captivates every affection of his heart… There are heights and depths in the doctrine of the cross which man never could reach.” Christ's Willing Offering The offering of Himself to His Father was voluntary. He was not forced or coerced. He revealed: “No one takes My life from Me. I lay it down of My own initiative.” (John 10:18) Matthew Henry writes: “Voluntary. What is done in religion, so as to please God, must be done by no other constraint than that of love.” His offering was not laborious duty but loving devotion. The World Sees Waste—Heaven Sees Worship The natural mind calls this—not cooked but burnt—a waste. But Christ's loving devotion to His Father transforms what the natural man sees as waste into worship. John 14:31 — “So that the world will know that I love the Father.” The sacred center of His sacrifice was this public display of affectionate devotion to His Father. He didn't merely accept God's will—it was His intention, His motive, His reason. (See Hebrews 10:5–10; John 6:38–39; 10:17–18; Luke 22:42) John Owen describes it: “The free act of love to the Father.” Spurgeon echoes: “He came not with sigh but a song to do His Father's will.” Owen again: “The greatest demonstration of the love of Christ unto the Father is His giving Himself up to the death of the cross, to manifest what love and accomplish His will.” The Burnt Sacrifice Was Innocent The burnt sacrifice, as the chapter foreshadows, had to be an innocent other. Christ was not only innocent—oh, much more—He was without defect. He fit the foreshadow perfectly. He alone is clean inside and out. Mackintosh: “No one had ever perfectly, invariably, from first to last, without hesitation, without divergence, done the will of God.” “It was no surface work with Him… The more the depths of His being were explored, the more clearly was it manifest that pure devotion to the will of the Father…” Every Part of Him Aflame I mean to exalt Christ's burning love for God and His voluntary offering of Himself to God alone as the sacred center of our revelation of what Christ is actually like. Every part of Him aflame to God. Oh, how unlike us is Christ. By this, we know what love for God looks like: the surrender of our whole selves. Romans 12:1 — “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” Though our love is but the flicker of a faint flame, His sacred center quickens our hearts. For He exemplifies a love that stands apart from all others—ascending to God in fragrant flame. No portion eaten. No fragment withheld. No part left over. Every sinew of His sacred humanity—thoughts, deeds, motives, breath, blood— all offered up to God. A Few Notes from Leviticus 1 The offering was made morning and evening. He is this both day and night. In the noonday sun and in the blackest night. No shade of life would alter His surrender. The offering could be an ox or a bird. He is this in the great and the small. No action was too small to be wholly surrendered to God. The bird was plucked and unsevered. Christ had His beard plucked in mockery—and yet His divinity was never severed from His humanity. He died as the God-Man. The sinner laid his hand upon the sacrifice, symbolizing imparted guilt and acknowledgment of deserved death. A foreshadow of the One upon whom the Lord laid the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53). The Subtle Trap of Looking to Ourselves Henry Martyn, a missionary to India, once wrote that when he tried to find comfort by examining his life and searching for evidences of grace, he actually lost the brokenness of spirit he longed to keep. The more he looked to himself, the less he could rest simply at the foot of the cross. Many of us try to find peace by measuring our own faithfulness: Have I prayed enough? Have I served enough? Have I conquered this sin consistently? We think that if we can point to enough evidence of our devotion, we will feel secure. But here is the irony: the more we look to our own performance, the more we lose humility, dependence, and the sweetness of simple trust in Jesus. It is a subtle trap. Even good things—prayer, ministry, obedience—can become props we lean on to feel worthy, rather than gifts that flow from grace. Martyn only found peace when he stopped searching for comfort in himself and began to pray as a dying man—helpless and needy—resting on Christ alone. This is the lesson: Our comfort never comes from our own faithfulness, but from Christ's faithfulness for us. Brokenness of spirit and assurance of love thrive best when we lay aside self-scrutiny and fix our gaze on the cross. Christ in the Burnt Offering As a burnt ox – He gave all His strength and labor to God. As a burnt sheep – He meekly followed God to death, patient and quiet in suffering. As a burnt goat – Though sinless, He was thought to be a sinner, sent in the likeness of sinful flesh. As a burnt dove – He was pure, single-eyed, plucked, unsevered, and holy. The Preacher's Duty The priests were to arrange the wood and position the sacrifice. John Gill sees this as a type of the preacher's duty: “Evidence given of Him in the gospel, in which He is clearly set forth in His person, nature, and offices.” Trapp agrees: “The minister must rightly divide and dispose the Word of God, and evidently set forth Christ crucified.” Trapp also writes of the fire consuming the sacrifice: “Typifying the scorching wrath of God upon Christ—or the ardent love of Christ to God.” The Sweet-Smelling Savor In all this, we see the “sweet-smelling savor unto God.” Christ as the burnt offering: the perfect Man, without defect, pure in and out, in action and thought, motive and deed, great and small—voluntarily offering Himself in love and devotion to His Father. To miss this is to reduce the gospel to a scheme for man's relief. If we fail to see this, we are but a step away from shaping the gospel into a man-centered escape plan, robbing God of His rightful glory in the work of His Son. Spurgeon wrote: “Christ did not die out of mere pity for man, but first of all out of love for the Father.” The salvation of man was the love song of the Son to the Father. Three Effects on My Soul Adoration of such a lovely individual A desire to receive Him as my own A longing to surrender myself As Matthew Poole writes: “To serve the Lord with all singleness of heart, without self-ends, and to be ready to offer to God wherein we ourselves should have no benefit.” God has graciously met our need— and may He give us an enlarged capacity to enter into and enjoy His provision.

Ever since I've come to believe that God is the Father, and that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that the spirit is the Spirit of God, people have said – actually Christian people have said - that I'm part of a cult. They mean it, of course, in a derogatory, pejorative sense. If the belief in the Trinity, three divine persons in one essence, and the belief in a fully-god-fully-man-Christ, a Christ who is a divine person with two natures – if these beliefs are developments made after the New Testament was written, made in places like Alexandria Egypt, Athens Greece, Constantinople and Cappadocia Turkey, and Rome Italy -- then these beliefs are aberrations, “cultish” if you will, not the real God nor the real Christ of the Bible. Host Michael Taft talks with author David Godman about the sage Ramana Maharshi and his nondual view of the world, whether he considered taking sannyasa (renunciation) to be necessary to achieve awakening, the power of the physical presence of the guru, Sri Ramana's seemingly miraculous learning of Sanskrit, an introduction to Lakshmana Swami—a very advanced student of Ramana, with whom David Godman sat in the 1970s and 80s, Tamil poetry of awakening, and—in a surprising reveal—David Godman endorses a new jnani who lives in Tiruvannamalai.David Godman has been living in India since 1976, studying and practising the teachings of Ramana Maharshi. During that period he has met and written extensively about many direct disciples of Sri Ramana, including Lakshmana Swamy, Muruganar, Papaji and Annamalai Swami. David has also been involved in several projects that have translated Ramana Maharshi's Tamil teachings and made them available in English for the first time. His anthology of dialogues with Sri Ramana, Be As You Are, is, outside India, the most widely-read book on Sri Ramana's teachings.https://www.davidgodman.org/You can support the creation of future episodes of this podcast by contributing through Patreon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
