The central United States is known for its big rivers. From the mighty Mississippi to its tributaries that include the Missouri, Ohio, and Arkansas River, these large rivers drain about 41% of the U.S. including 31 states. They are important for our economy as corridors for transportation, and they are important as recreational fisheries. But they are facing many threats. From river modification, to urbanization, to invasive species, to changing precipitation patterns, these rivers aren't the same as they once were. Wes discusses these impacts with Dr. Mike Eggleton, a fisheries professor at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Mike's research career has been largely focused on large river fisheries and ecology, and he shares some of his stories and insight on ol' man river. Do you have questions or comments? Along the way, he bought his first station in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Now, he's settled in Rome, Georgia, as managing partner of a six-station cluster—each station sounding much larger than its small-market size. When Public Figures Forget Funeral Etiquette: The Tyler Perry and Monique Controversy

When celebrities clash at a funeral, who gets hurt the most? Welcome to this week's Indie Artist Music Hustle with Blonde Intelligence. I'm your host Ms. Roni, where I always seek to give you exquisite cranial repertoire. The recent passing of R&B legend Angie Stone should have been a moment for unified grief and celebration of her artistic legacy. Instead, it became the backdrop for yet another chapter in the ongoing Tyler Perry and Monique saga that has left many fans questioning what happened to basic funeral etiquette.Tyler Perry's decision to highlight Angie's disputes with Universal Music Group over royalty theft during her memorial service struck a discordant note in what should have been a harmonious tribute. While advocating for justice has its place, a funeral represents sacred ground where the focus belongs squarely on honoring the departed. Rather than sharing meaningful stories about Angie's musical contributions or personal character—like her powerful impact during a performance in Pine Bluff that reportedly coincided with a rare day of peace—Perry veered into territory many found inappropriate for the occasion. Not to be outdone, Monique took to social media to voice her dissatisfaction with Tyler's behavior while simultaneously reigniting their personal feud. Though she offered praise for Angie's talent, her timing and platform choice further complicated an already delicate situation. Both figures' actions serve as a sobering reminder of the responsibility public figures carry, especially during moments of collective mourning. Their conduct raises important questions about the boundaries between personal vendettas and public respect, particularly when a community is processing grief.Have you noticed other instances where celebrity conflicts overshadowed important moments of remembrance? Share your thoughts and join us next week for more cultural commentary that matters on Indie Artist Music Hustle with Blonde Intelligence.Support the show

RUNDOWN Mitch shares a quick story about Sylvester Stallone's Rocky turtles still being alive (yes, really), before he and Hotshot Scott spiral into a trivia-packed detour on Pine Bluff, Arkansas' unlikely sports legacy. There's also a throwback story about a terrified 22-year-old Mitch interviewing George Foreman after the 1990 Cooney fight—complete with awkward silence, locker room urine tests, and a mic-shaking case of nerves. Brady Henderson joins to break down the Seahawks' offseason strategy—why Will Fries slipped away, how the Geno and DK trades were influenced by locker room concerns, and what to expect from Seattle's 10 draft picks, including five in the top 92. With wide receiver and O-line needs still looming, is this a reload or a rebuild? Then it's the Mariners No-Table with Brady Farkas and Joe Doyle, the trio breaks down Opening Day storylines: Logan Gilbert's pressure as the new No. 1, Emerson Hancock stepping in for George Kirby, Rowdy Tellez's boom-or-bust upside, and whether Seattle's quietly dangerous roster can win a suddenly winnable AL West. Jason Hamilton rounds out the show with thoughts on the Big Ten's brutal travel, the evolution of fan energy, and what's next for Danny Sprinkle at UW. Plus: standout March Madness moments, why Florida might be the most complete team left, and how NIL and college hoops free agency may be pushing the game toward a cliff.   GUESTS • Brady Henderson | Seahawks Reporter (ESPN.com) • Mariners No-Table | Joe Doyle (Over Slot) & Brady Farkas (Sports Illustrated Now M's Editor) • Jason Hamilton | Former UW Guard & Huskies Broadcast Analyst   TABLE OF CONTENTS 1:00 | Tortoises, Turtles, and the 1980 NBA Draft: Mitch & Hotshot Dive Into Trivia, Nostalgia, and Classic Sports Stories 10:03 | Clip of the Week: Kelvin, Not Kevin 19:56 | Mitch Recalls a Terrifying but Unforgettable Locker Room Interview with George Foreman After the 1990 Cooney Fight 38:43 | GUEST: Brady Henderson | Seahawks Reporter (ESPN.com) Seahawks' Free Agency Gamble: Minimal Moves, Major Questions Heading Into NFL Draft 1:06:20 | GUEST: Mariners No-Table | Joe Doyle (Over Slot) & Brady Farkas (Sports Illustrated Now M's Editor) Rowdy Tellez, Rotation Woes, and Early Season Urgency: The Mariners' 2025 Outlook Begins 1:28:40 | GUEST: Jason Hamilton | Former UW Guard & Huskies Broadcast Analyst Big Ten Burnout, Transfer Turmoil, and Tournament Favorites: Jason Hamilton Talks March Madness and College Hoops' Changing Landscape 1:47:24 | The Other Stuff Segment: Mariners opening day and predictions, Mariners spring training performance, George Kirby injury, Seahawks sign River Cracraft, Mitch praises Cracraft's potential, Danny Hurley complaints after loss, Tiger Woods dating Vanessa Trump, Maryland buzzer-beater and tournament analysis, NCAA tournament lack of upsets, Sean Miller hired by Texas, coach fired for yanking player's hair, Masters Champions Dinner menu, Tracy Morgan food poisoning at Knicks game, RIPs: Brett Gardner's son Headlines: toupee cocaine smuggling story, Wink Shapiro hairpiece spotting claim.

A Prophet's Journey through Midnight by Mickarl D. Thomas, Sr., DMin, MPAMickarl D. Thomas Sr. chronicles the challenges he's overcome in A Prophet's Journey through Midnight. As an asthmatic child, he lost two brothers before being born and was left to wonder why he was spared. While he grew up with loving parents and siblings, his father was illiterate. More challenges would loom-none worse than the death of his son, Mikey, at age seventeen. The words, "Mikey was killed," reverberate in his soul every day. When he received the news, he fell on his knees before throwing an exercise machine at the bedroom window. Then he tried to jump. His harrowing journey also involved a divorce, a battle with prostate cancer, and contending with the death of his parents. In this book, he shares the pain of going through so many ordeals and also looks back at the obstacles he overcame during forty-five years in pastoral ministry. Throughout, he shares his belief that no matter what takes place in life, God is in charge. As Psalm 22:8 declares, "For the kingdom is the Lord's, and He rules over the nations."Mickarl D. Thomas, Sr. is a native of Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit as well as Wayne St. University with a BA in sociology and speech. He obtained a Masters of Divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, Doctor of Ministry from Boston University School of Theology and a Masters in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.Dr. Thomas is married to Carol Ann Petrigrew of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and they have a combined family of six children. CES 2025: Closing the tech opportunity gap in Rural America

In this episode of Work in Progress, I head to CES 2025 to explore how tech innovations are creating more job opportunities and economic mobility in Rural America, and how they are transforming farming. I caught up with Matt Dunne, founder and executive director of Center on Rural Innovation, and Jeff Runde, engineering director at AgTech giant John Deere, who share their insights in this episode. Rural America: Center on Rural Innovation is Creating Tech Companies The Center on Rural Innovation (CORI) is working to close the technology opportunity gap in Rural America by helping communities develop technology jobs and innovation-based companies. "The biggest challenge for rural founders and aspiring rural technologists is isolation," says Dunne. "It's really nothing else. It's not their capacity, their tenacity, or even their innovative ideas, it's being able to connect them to the advisors that can give them the information that they need to be able to be successful, as you might find in a Palo Alto or a Cambridge, Massachusetts." Dunne explains that for the past eight years CORI has been helping attract venture capital to founders in towns in Rural America. In the podcast, he details how that work has transformed Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Winston, North Carolina, creating good-paying tech jobs. Rural America: AgTech is Changing Farming At CES, I also saw firsthand how tech is changing the agricultural industry. The American Farm Bureau Federation estimates there are roughly 2.4 million farm jobs that need to be filled annually. Runde showed me John Deere's new driverless tractor, the Autonomous 9RX Tractor, which he says can help the American farmer plan, plant, and harvest their crops. It's huge and combines advanced computer vision, AI, and cameras to help the machines navigate their environments. In the podcast, Runde explains how farmers can operate the controls from a mobile device and what it means for productivity and the economy in Rural America. You can listen to the entire conversation here, or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also find our podcasts on the Work in Progress YouTube channel. About the Guest(s): Yolanda Harris is a former collegiate player and mom of a former McDonald's All-American daughter Zay Green. She has played at Tennessee, Texas A&M, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and currently at Alabama. Durmon Jennings serves as an associate coach at UNT. With a decade of experience in college basketball coaching, Jennings is recognized for his strategic recruiting methods and emphasis on fostering a dog mentality in his players. His approach integrates player development with a strong focus on teamwork and accountability. Kendall Mosley is a San Diego State signee and a high school basketball standout. Kendall's journey is marked by perseverance, having received college offers late in her high school career. Her dedication to honing her craft, especially her shooting skills, has positioned her as a promising talent in collegiate basketball. Adhel Tac is currently playing for UNT's women's basketball team after experiences at both TCU and UTEP. Known for her versatile playing style and leadership qualities, she contributes significantly on and off the court through her seasoned insights and effective communication. In this special birthday episode of "It's Just Different" podcast, Ashley Roberts brings together a dynamic panel to dive deep into the evolving landscape of women's basketball, the pressures of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals, and the recruiting process. The guests share personal stories of resilience, highlight different facets of their careers, and discuss the vital importance of building a strong support system around athletes. The episode discusses what's currently trending in basketball, including NIL impacts and athlete visibility. Coach Jennings elaborates on recruitment strategies and what they seek in prospective student-athletes. Kendall Moseley offers an inspiring account of her journey from an unknown to a sought-after talent, spotlighting the significance of perseverance and self-belief. Adhel Tac reflects on navigating her college basketball path and emphasizes the importance of identity beyond sports. Another focal point of the conversation is the importance of social media as a branding tool, reinforcing its role in building a player's persona. As the guests recount experiences from their basketball journeys, they offer invaluable advice to both athletes and their parents. Key takeaways: NIL deals are significantly impacting college sports, creating both opportunities and challenges for student-athletes.  The recruitment process benefits from a strong support system where high school coaches and parents play crucial roles. A player's unique talent should be complemented by a well-rounded skill set to stand out during recruitment. Navigating multiple school transfers can be daunting but rewarding by contributing to personal growth and resilience. Transitioning to college demands maturity and the building of a personal brand that extends beyond sports performance. Chase Robinson and Chris Lee preview and share their predictions for Arkansas's trip to Arlington to face Texas A&M. Topics include: Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green has been up and down. He was spectacular against Pine-Bluff and Oklahoma State, but has completed less than 50% of his throws the past two weeks vs. UAB and Auburn. Ja'Quinden Jackson is one of the SEC's most underrated players, and leads a potent Arkansas rushing attack. Will Texas A&M go with Marcel Reed over the injured Connor Weigman (shoulder) again this week? The Aggies have mounted a formidable rushing attack with Reed, Le'Veon Moss and Amari Daniels. Arkansas's rush defense has been good despite facing two of the country's best running backs in Ollie Gordon (Oklahoma State) and Jarquez Hunter (Auburn). The world currently removes less than .0001% of the carbon required to meet the IPCC's 2050 goal – so there's A LOT of work to be done – which is what makes Graphyte's ready-to-go solution all the more valuable.Barclay Rogers, a former environmental lawyer, mechanical engineer, and multi-time founder, is bringing his unique set of experiences and leadership skills to making scalable, affordable CO2 removal an immediate reality with his new startup, Graphyte. Rather than rely on energy-intensive and still-developing technology like Direct Air Capture, Barclay and his team realized that they could use nature's own hyper-efficient carbon capture process – photosynthesis – to leverage natural resources in their revolutionary Carbon Casting process, a first-of-its-kind technique that traps carbon in easy to store bricks forged from the biomass waste generated by farms, logging camps, and paper mills. With their world-leading carbon removal operations already underway at their Pine Bluff, Arkansas facility, Graphyte is able to offer durable carbon removal that's scalable, affordable, and, maybe most importantly, ready right now. Hear Barclay Rogers talk about Graphyte's origin story, the importance of scalability for climate solutions, and why his native Arkansas is the perfect home for biomass-based carbon removal.Episode Highlights00:00 Barclay Rogers on carbon removal in the heartland00:32 Conor Gaughan introduces Barclay Rogers and Graphyte04:37 Arkansas roots, natural resources, and mechanical engineering09:36 Environmental law, government, and pivot to entrepreneurship 19:20 Startup career, the carbon industry, and the potential of biomass 25:25 The origin of Graphtye, durable carbon removal, and scalability33:43 Innovation curves, public policy factors, and the value of carbon40:24 Breakthrough Ventures, climate change, and growing a community 46:11 Leaving a legacy and finding motivation47:43 Where to learn more and end creditsIf you liked this episode, listen next to Dr. Vince Romanin of Gradient on Heat Pumps, Zero-Carbon Infrastructure, and the Triple Bottom LineMore on Graphyte and Barclay Rogers:graphyte.com linkedin.com/company/graphytecarbon linkedin.com/in/barclayrogers Connect with Conor Gaughan on linkedin.com/in/ckgone and threads.net/@ckgoneHave questions, or a great idea for a potential guest?
