Many of those who deconstruct and leave the Church are said to "follow Jesus right out the door." On today's podcast with Scot McKnight and Tommy Phillips we discuss why those who leave the church do, and how churches can listen to their critiques.
Have you ever wondered if bigger always means better when it comes to church communities? In this eye-opening episode of Seek Go Create - The Leadership Journey, host Tim Winders sits down with New Testament professor and author Scot McKnight to challenge the conventional wisdom of mega churches and explore the critical role of genuine pastoral care. Listen in as they delve into the deconstruction movement, the true essence of pastoral calling, and the importance of encountering Jesus in our spiritual journeys. Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation that might just reshape your perspective on faith and community."Deconstruction isn't about losing faith—it's about shedding what doesn't align with Jesus to reconstruct a healthier faith." - Scot McKnight Access all show and episode resources HEREAbout Our Guest:Scot McKnight is a distinguished New Testament professor, prolific author, and thought leader in contemporary Christian theology. With a Ph.D. in New Testament from the University of Nottingham, he has authored more than 80 books, including the critically acclaimed "Invisible Jesus," co-authored with Tommy Phillips. McKnight's work frequently explores themes of faith deconstruction, spiritual formation, and pastoring, emphasizing a Jesus-first approach to Christianity. He is a sought-after speaker and a respected voice in both academic and pastoral circles, known for his profound insight and engaging discourse on church practices and theological crises. Reasons to Listen: Insight on Effective Pastoring: Discover Scot McKnight's compelling argument on why true pastoral care is limited to smaller congregations, challenging the scale of mega churches.Deconstruction in Faith: Explore the thought-provoking discussion on faith deconstruction and how it pushes for a Jesus-first approach, shedding light on the spiritual formation movement.Critique of Modern Church Practices: Gain critical perspectives on popular church structures and the necessity of nurturing Christ-like character over church growth and entertainment-focused ministry.Episode Resources & Action Steps:Resources Mentioned:Book: "Invisible Jesus: A Book About Leaving the Church and Looking for Christ" by Scot McKnight and Tommy Phillips A significant part of the episode's discussion that addresses deconstruction and pushing for a Jesus-first faith.Action Steps:Assess Your Pastoral Relationships: Scot McKnight encourages potential pastors and church leaders to evaluate their current pastoral relationships and focus on nurturing individuals into Christ-likeness.Engage in Faith Deconstruction Thoughtfully: Reflect on McKnight's definition of deconstruction as shedding non-essential elements of church practices to reconstruct a Jesus-shaped faith. Consider how this can apply to your personal spiritual journey.Prioritize Personal Engagement Over Charismatic Preaching: Take actionable steps to prioritize personal, pastoral relationships in your church community, focusing on direct engagement rather than solely relying on charismatic preaching. Consider smaller group formations or classes for better spiritual formation.Resources for Leaders from Tim Winders & SGC:
In their new book, Tommy and Scot McKnight discuss how Jesus is disappearing in the evangelical church, and how this is leading to deconstruction. Aaron and Tommy sit down and talk about what Tommy and Scot found in their new book, Invisible Jesus: A Book about Leaving the Church and Looking for Christ.
FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and Ministry
As pastors and ministry leaders, how can we engage with the deconstruction of one's faith in a way that truly reflects Jesus? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Scot McKnight and Tommy Preson Phillips. Scot has been a professor of New Testament for more than four decades and has written over 90 books. Tommy is the pastor of Watermark Church in Tampa, Florida, as well as a songwriter and recording artist. Scott and Tommy collaborated on a new book entitled Invisible Jesus. Together, Scot, Tommy, and Jason contrast the prevailing view that many ministry leaders have about those who are deconstructing their faith with what many deconstructors are actually experiencing in their faith journey. Tommy and Scot also offer some words of hope, encouragement, and support for pastors who are experiencing deconstruction in themselves, in their family members, or in the people they serve.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more, at http://PastorServe.org/networkSome key takeaways from this conversation:Tommy Phillips on the dynamic nature of faith and the desire for a deeper, more meaningful relationship with Jesus that prioritizes love and compassion: "Most people are deconstructing to find a more loving, more Christ-like, way to follow Jesus.'"Scot McKnight on the significant process of evaluation and clarification happening within the Church: "I really believe that there's a big sorting out of things going on right now in the Church."Scot McKnight on the interplay between crisis, questioning, and renewal through a deeper connection with Jesus: "The quest in the deconstruction is to find some resolution to what caused this crisis, and it leads to an encounter with Jesus."----------------Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? Restoration work continues on the historic Hearin-Armistead Stallard Home, which was built in 1842 and is likely Grove Hill's oldest residential structure. Local contractor Tommy Phillips and the crew of Phillips Construction have replaced the front porch, columns and banisters. The work was financed with a grant from the Alabama Historical Commission. The foundation was previously stabilized. Thomas Hearin lived east of Grove Hill but apparently built the home so his 11 children could attend school in town. Hearin did not live in the house long, moving to Bladon Springs in 1850. The late Texas Gov. William P. Clements was...Article Link

One hundred letters have been sent out to Grove Hill property owners advising them of the need to clean up their properties, Grove Hill's new building inspector Tommy Phillips told the Town Council Monday evening. He's been riding around town checking on things, “making a list and checking it twice, gonna find out who's naughty and nice....” Tommy Phillips gave the town council a brief overview at Monday's meeting of what he's found. “All you have to do is just look” he said of ordinance violations. He said there were old cars and trucks in yards and at businesses that haven't run in years and won't run in future years. There's piles of trash and other debris. There are homes...Article Link
Jeeyoon was such a joy to sit down with. She is an award winning concert pianist and host of the Journey Through Classical Piano Podcast. She recently added 'author' to her list of titles as she just published "Whenever You're Ready" which is an incredible book about the many lessons learned from a lifetime of developing her craft as a pianist. It is not a book about being a piano player though as the lessons and wisdom found in it transcend any specific pursuit and offer incredible tools and encouragement for all of you to take on any challenge "whenever you're ready!" Visit www.jeeyoonkim.com to learn more About the book: Jeeyoon Kim is a professional concert pianist who has performed in venues like Carnegie Hall, the Chamber Music Society in San Francisco, and the Stradivari Society in Chicago. As an accomplished performing artist and award-winning music educator, she credits her success to key disciplines, practices, and mindsets that she lives out every day. In Whenever You're Ready: How to Compose the Life of Your Dreams (Greenleaf Book Group, Aug. 24, 2021), Kim gives readers a personal glimpse into her life, shares wisdom and insights she's gained from her experiences, and shows people how to achieve their own personal and professional success. Structured like one of the concerts she performs, this self-help book starts with a prelude and contains five movements, each focused on a different theme, such as forming habits and boosting creativity. Each movement is followed by a quick intermission that takes readers through a mini master class to help them gain an appreciation of classical music. This book is about helping readers prepare themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically for their own performances. Whether they are hoping to land a job, practicing for a speech, training for a marathon, or trying to accomplish a goal, Jeeyoon's book will offer them advice, encouragement, and practical exercises they can use to help them perform at their best and achieve their dreams. With warmth, honesty, and compassion, Jeeyoon speaks to readers who are in their own green rooms and invites them to live the life they hope for. Praise for Whenever You're Ready “Like the succinct distillation of human emotion she creates in her powerful piano performances, Jeeyoon shares with us in these pages her personal ‘tool kit for life.' A beautifully articulated, rare glimpse into the inner mind of a consummate musician and human being.” —Susan Kitterman, Founder and Artistic Director Emeritus of the New World Youth Orchestra “Whenever You're Ready is the perfect resource guide for anyone who wants to improve upon their long-term professional or personal goals. For musicians and non-musicians alike, Jeeyoon's well-thought-out musical structure and beautifully crafted narrative give you the lift you need to improve your mindset and perhaps appreciate some beautiful music in the process.” —Tommy Phillips, President and Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theworkethic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theworkethic/support

It hardly matters what Scripture means to us. It matters deeply what it meant to those for whom it was written. Every line of Scripture has context — a reason, a time frame, and a purpose. We often use the Bible as a means of advocating for our own nation and political agenda. We should keep in mind, instead, that earthly kingdoms won't last forever; the Kingdom of God will.
