Guys are fascinated with growth. Starting as youngsters, we dream about growing up. When we get to our teenage years, we want to grow strong. As we move into our adult years, we want to grow wise. The process of growing up, growing strong, and growing wise all seem pretty straight-forward. What if a man wants to grow spiritually? How does that work? Well, today's guest will help us answer that question. Today, Dr. Nathan Wagnon joins Adam in the studio to talk about how men grow spiritually. Nathan is on staff at Watermark Community Church, where he serves as the director of Equipping and Apologetics. He's also the host of Watermark's Equipping Podcast. He's a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University and Dallas Seminary. He's also served in the Army and did two deployments in Afghanistan. You can connect with Nathan here. NOTE: During the intro to this episode, we mistakenly said that Nathan has a PhD from Biola University. That was incorrect. Nathan has a DMin, not a PhD. We apologize for the confusion! Guest: Chris Sherrod, Marriage and Family Director, Watermark Community Church, Dallas, TX What is the “state of marriage” in America? Over the past 50 years, the marriage rate has dropped by almost 60% The number of women entering their first marriage between the ages of 40 and 59 has jumped 75% in 1990 Men, how can you be “successful” in your marriage and leading your family? OYOG - Own Your Own Growth. Leading your family starts with your own spiritual growth and maturity! You can't teach what you don't know; you can't pass on what you don't have. Oxygen mask example - put yours on first! The fruit of godliness starts with the seed of godliness being planted in you first. If something is important, you make time for it; if it's not important, you make excuses. Leading means “encouraging faith in their heart.” You need to know what encourages faith in your wife and children. Leadership isn't just a one-way street, you need to learn to ask questions…Jesus asked more questions than He answered! Ephesians 5 concept - love, serve, and lead. God wants your dependence, not your performance. Love your wife unconditionally, as Christ loved the church (sacrificially). This is a daily opportunity! Take the initiative to “wash her with the Word” - whatever that looks like for you, look for opportunities to engage each other with the Word of God! Great question to ask: “How can I be praying for you?” Deut. 6 - “teach your children” from a Biblical perspective means to “sharpen them.” When can you do this? Find windows of opportunities - in the morning, at dinner, when you put them to bed, etc. Great resource for this is Habits of the Household: Practicing the Story of God in Everyday Family Rhythms by Justin Whitmel Earley. Create a place in your home that has your “Ebenezer stones of remembrance” - symbols of God's goodness and provision in the history of your life and family - and go back and tell the stories of what God has done for you to your kids and grandkids (see Psalm 78). Part I: 01:30-06:59What is Trinity? The Trinity: the word that describes the conviction that God exists as three co-equal, co-eternal persons that are distinct yet are one in essence. To love God rightly, you have to know God rightly The Trinity helps us understand God more fully, ourselves more fully, and the Gospel more fully. Scripture Mentioned: Deuteronomy 29:29, Galatians 4:4-7 Part IV: 15:30-19:40Where do we see the Trinity in the Bible? “The Old Testament may be likened to a chamber richly furnished but dimly lit...” – B.B. Do Christians, Jews, and Muslims Worship the Same God? 5 Reasons the Trinity Matters So Much Part VI: 22:46-26:50Common questions on the Trinity Is there a person of the Trinity that you favor? “…When I think of anyone of the three, I think of him as the whole, and my eyes are filled, and the greater part of what I am thinking escapes me. I cannot grasp the greatness of that one so as to attribute a greater greatness to the rest. When I contemplate the three together, I see but one torch, and cannot divide or measure out the undivided light.” – Gregory Nazianzen Who do we pray to? About the Episode: Hear this group of men discuss how body image affects men as well as women. These men talk about their hope in the Lord and peace that comes from knowing your identity is based in being a son or daughter of the Most High not on how you look. How do we make something that is good like exercise not become an idol? The inward focus of “look at me” shift to “look at what God has done” is a hope of all believers.
