No. 3 Penn State picked up a big top-25 win at No. 16 USC over the weekend, and we thought it was the perfect excuse to chat with Penn State alum and LOVB Salt Lake middle Haleigh Washington. A two-time Olympic medalist with Team USA, Haleigh had barely considered playing professionally until legendary coach Russ Rose pulled her aside and encouraged her to put her all into a pro career. The USA is heading back to the Olympics as reigning Gold Medalists in Women's Indoor Volleyball. Part of that history-making team in the Tokyo 2020 (2021) Olympics was former Penn St. standout and current Paris 2024 Olympian Haleigh Washington! Haleigh Washington, Olympic gold medalist, professional volleyball player and VIS League Mentor shares her journey in sport. Haleigh speaks about how she got into the sport and the sacrifices she and her family had to make for her to play volleyball. She dives into her collegiate experience, and how she prepared herself to play professionally. Haleigh also shares what playing abroad in Italy is like, and describes her experience at the Tokyo Olympics! Beyond her journey, Haleigh gives us great advice on embracing our emotions as athletes, learning to fail and taking deep breaths every day. Haleigh is a professional volleyball player and a member of the US Women's National Team that won the Olympic Gold Medal in indoor volleyball this summer in Tokyo, Japan. Haleigh is a graduate of Penn State Univeristy, where she was a 3-time All-American and helped lead her team to a Big Ten title, two final four appearances, and an NCAA Championship title. She currently plays for the professional club team Igor Gorgonzola in Novara, Italy. Haleigh is a USA National Team Volleyball star. The 6'3” Middle grew up in Colorado Springs and graduated from Penn State. Haleigh helped lead the University Team to the NCAA Division I Tournament title as a freshman and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year hitting .463 for the season. Senior year her hitting efficiency of .492 earned her the 3rd best single-season percentage in NCAA history. She earned Gold at the 2018 Pan American Cup and started all 3 matches of the 2019 Tokyo Qualification Tournament in which Team USA secured its bid into the 2020 Olympic games.
