“I became world champion in a year and a half. People ain't been on my level. I'm more than special.” Fred Kerley Fred Kerley's speed on the track is matched only by the intensity of his mindset and the strength of his journey. Sitting with Ryan, Channing and Fred- the guys are taking back by his serious demeanor and no-play attitude. From a football and basketball hopeful to one of the fastest men in the universe, the Olympic medalist and world champion sits down with The Pivot crew to talk about the twists, turns, and challenges that shaped his career. Kerley doesn't hold back as he reflects on the defining moments of his life, Growing up in a tough environment, being adopted, and making a life-changing decision to leave Texas to pursue a professional contract, which he credits to helping him mature faster and avoiding the pitfalls that trapped so many around him. Kerley opens up about handling various pressures of being an elite sprinter and how hundreds of hours of preparation comes down to less than a minute and how your whole life and career can change in 9 seconds. Building up mental resilience to stay focused and achieve success is the goal every second of the day. While Fred dominates the track, he shares his thoughts on life beyond racing—his love for farming, his dedication to his kids, and why he believes track and field doesn't get the respect it deserves compared to the NBA and NFL. Of course, Kerley doesn't shy away from the rivalries that fuel his competitive fire, taking direct aim at Noah Lyles: “Go look at the record books, look who got more wins.” Whether it's lining up against the best in the world or proving his critics wrong, Kerley is confident in his abilities and unapologetic in his approach. With high expectations swirling around the 2028 LA Olympics, he's determined to go out on top and spend his next 2 years regaining his title as fastest man in the world. Iona Anderson is a teenage Australian Olympian and one of the best backstrokers in the world. 5th at her first Olympics individually, she came home with silver and bronze medals for her relay efforts in Paris. A native of Perth, West Australia, Iona grew up focusing primarily on gymnastics and didn't even start swimming until age 12, so her rise to be among the elites happened quickly. Perhaps this success in the pool comes from a short term focus, not being distracted by the potential she has down the road as Iona is simply focused on this season, in particular improving her skills off the block and the walls. Iona joined us from her temporary training base in Scotland but will return soon to her main base at the WAIS as she focuses on the build toward Commonwealth Games. Friend of the pod and now 2-time Olympic medalist Ilya Kharun returns to catch us up on his massive summer. Last time we spoke with Ilya a year ago he was making waves in his first college dual meets and training with Bob Bowman at Arizona State. A lot has happened since then. The Sun Devils won their first NCAA team championship, Ilya became an individual NCAA champ in the 200 fly, then Bob Bowman left ASU for Texas, leaving Ilya among some of the prominent athletes that had to make a decision about their future during critical months ahead of the Paris Olympics. Ilya decided to remain at ASU and train with now-Head Coach Herbie Behm, and he went on to realize his potential in a huge way at the Olympics, winning matching bronze medals in both the 100 and 200 fly in Paris, both in personal best times in the Olympic finals. Now Ilya is back on campus with the boys and the face of ASU swimming. With some major losses in the transfer portal (Hubert Kos, Owen McDonald, Zalan Sarkany) and the loss of Leon Marchand, many people are counting this year's Sun Devils out, but Ilya and the squad are motivated and are out to prove the doubters wrong. Episode Summary: Swimming has always been something that the black culture can do. Trust me, I've been to the Olympics. Team Nigeria, Team South Africa. It's a problem in the U.S. And it starts with the culture. We have to stop saying we don't swim. Yes. We. Do. Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer Cullen Jones' journey into the sport started with a near drowning when he was five-years old. The experience left him terrified of deep water – as soon as he couldn't touch the floor he would panic. But his mother was adamant that her son learn how to swim and with incredible determination and against a lot of odds, Cullen became one of the fastest in the world. In this episode, Cullen takes us through his journey from being a kid scared to jump into the pool to facing racism at swim meets and going on to break a world record in swimming. He tells us about Brad the instructor who taught him to love swimming and about the time Serena Williams gave him a shout of encouragement before a big race. Cullen also gets candid about the barriers he faced as an African American swimmer, what he is doing now to change the swimming narrative in the Black community, and his mission to ensure underserved communities learn the life-saving skill of swimming. About Cullen Jones:Cullen Jones is a four time Olympic medalist and the first African American to break a world record in swimming. As a member of Team USA, he made history by helping break world records and winning gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in what many say was the most exciting race in Olympic History. Off the pool deck, he is a passionate advocate for water safety. Cullen serves as an ambassador and board member of the USA Swimming Foundation and works with GoldFish Swim School to help make swimming lessons more accessible to underserved communities.Connect with Cullen: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cullenjones41/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cullenjones/?hl=en Team USA: https://www.teamusa.com/profiles/cullen-jonesAbout The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. Mike is an old friend, a former elite collegiate runner, and a fellow competitor on the professional duathlon circuit, and it was amazing to catch up with him and detail the amazing Olympic journey! The backstory of Grant and Mike is pretty amazing. Mike coached Grant in high school in Michigan, where he became one of only eight high schoolers ever to break four minutes in the mile. Grant then headed off to a great NCAA career in Stanford and a pro career with the elite Bowerman Track Club team in Oregon. In a surprise mid-career shift, Grant decided to go about it his own way. He moved to Park City, UT for altitude training, and phoned up his old high school coach looking for guidance. This is less than a year before the Olympics as America's top distance runner! In this show, Mike will discuss the risks and pressures elite athletes face (and their coaches!) You'll be taken behind the scenes for the Paris Games and the extraordinary measures Grant and Mike took to ensure he could focus and succeed. You'll love the story of how Grant and Mike were locked inside the Olympic stadium late at night after winning his 10,000 meter bronze. You'll learn about Mike's evolved approach where he is solely focused on serving the athlete and avoids getting the all-too-common coaching ego into the mix. You'll learn about today's popular scientific approach to endurance training centered upon measuring and controlling blood lactate levels during workouts, and why many runners "ruin their workouts" with a less disciplined approach. You'll learn the benefits of altitude training, and how Grant's mindset and extensive rehearsals helped him execute awesome strategy at both Olympic races. At the end, Mike provides some profound insights for young runners and their parents about the importance of being motivated naturally and intrinsically. You'll also learn why, a couple decades ago, crime didn't pay in Tucson, AZ, where you might have gotten into a foot pursuit with someone who would most definitely outlast you...I've known and studied lots of coaches over the years, and I don't think you'll find a more healthy and evolved disposition than that embodied by Mike. No wonder Grant phoned him up out of the blue and asked for help going and getting some Olympic medals! Enjoy the show. Young runners can get a daily tip of inspiration by following Mike on X @realironmike TIMESTAMPS: We take a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on with Olympic athletes and their coaches. [00:53] Coaching Grant Fisher in the Olympics, Mike is able to share his expertise. [06:06] What we commonly see these days are high profile teams with big sponsors. It's a different approach from what Mike and Grant have done. [07:54] How did Mike's own experiences with coaches help him to get this particular disposition? [13:43] With the scientific approach, the thing the runner can do is check blood lactate. [16:20] Besides checking blook lactate, Mike checks heart rate, hematocrit and hemoglobin and other things. [19:38] When training at altitude or in the heat of Arizona, you have to cut the tempos why back. [21:19] It is very easy to ruin a workout by using that competitive intensity to work really hard. [23:40] What kind of volume and load can you put on the runner so that he absorbs the training and is ready for the next session? [27:33] You can have all the tech toys in the world but you have to listen to it! [29:48] When you make a detailed plan for the athlete, how often to you deviate from that plan? [31:17] Grant takes good care of himself. He takes care of sleep, massage, his food at home. [39:58] How do they manage the constant risk of overuse injuries? [41:05] In taking on the job to coach Grant Fisher, did you feel nervous about the whole USA expecting some medals? [45:36] What was his experience in Paris? What was the race strategy? [50:00] Living and training at altitude helps your body build additional red blood cells, but when you come down to sea level, you lose some of the benefits. [59:34] When running in the prelim, all you need is to be in the eight finalists. [01:04:13] Staying in the Olympic Village with the other athletes can be fine for social interactions, however, when you have big important events to still compete in, being around rowdy parties doesn't work. [01:05:53] You have to plan on when you need to go faster when you are in the big race. [01:09:15] There is no reason for Grant Fisher to take the lead in the Olympics first 4,000 meters. [01:12:46] Mike's coaching method involves only when the athlete himself asks for coaching, not if the parent asks. [01:21:50] High school kids don't know what they can't do so please don't tell them. Alex Beaulieu-Marchand wasn't born to be an Olympian. He was one of those core super-grom kids who skied the streets with his older friends. While other future Olympians were focused on adding rotations, ABM was focused on mastering rails, which would become his secret weapon. Through a random series of events, ABM found his way on to the Dew Tour and from there, the contest opened for the kid who liked skiing the streets. 10-time Olympic swimming medalist Caeleb Dressel is happy to be back on his Florida farm after the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. His results were mixed. He knows that. He knows he fought hard, and he didn't exactly have the Olympic Games he wanted. At a minimum, he's just glad he did it, went to Paris, because there were two moments when he thought he might not go at all. Dressel thought a repeat of the 2022 World Championship would happen, when he abruptly left in the middle of the competition. After making The U.S. Olympic Team at the U.S. Olympic Trials, in the middle of the meet, Dressel considered pulling out. Mentally he was battling---at war in his head. His wife, parents, and therapist were all there, all supporting him. So, he pushed on. After the U.S. Olympic Trials, Dressel considered pulling out again. He wondered if it would be better to give other, up and coming swimmers a shot at the Olympic stage. Dressel battled these thoughts. At one point, he considered only swimming the Olympic relays. It all made sense in his head. We now know Dressel completed his Olympic schedule, and in this podcast he gives a beat-by-beat account of what he experiences. It's real, raw, and courageously vulnerable.

It's Wednesday, August 14th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nicaragua detained a dozen Roman Catholic leaders Authorities in Nicaragua continue to crack down on religious leaders in the country. Police detained a dozen leaders of the Roman Catholic Church recently. Police arrested one of the priests while he was preparing to ordain several deacons and told him he did not have permission to do so. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has been cracking down on dissent. One bishop faced over 20 years in prison for criticizing the regime. Nicaragua is ranked 30th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Middle East-N. Africa most religious New data from Pew Research revealed how important religion is to people around the world and how often they pray. The most religious places were in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East-North Africa region. The least religious places tended to be in Europe and East Asia. People in sub-Saharan Africa were among the mostly likely to say religion is important to them with most being Christian or Muslim. Latin Americans were the most likely to pray daily. The United States was slightly below average on daily prayer. And people in European nations were the least likely to say religion is important to them. Psalm 9:17 warns, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Trump tells Musk: After assassination attempt, “I'm more of a believer” Tech billionaire Elon Musk interviewed former President Donald Trump for nearly two hours Monday night on X, formerly known as Twitter. Musk said the conversation has garnered one billion views. He endorsed Trump after the failed assassination attempt on the former president. The two discussed immigration, inflation, the assassination attempt, and Trump's political agendas. If re-elected, Trump said one of his first acts would be to close the Department of Education and move education back to the states. Trump also said it was a miracle he was still alive after the assassination attempt. Listen. TRUMP: “The bigger miracle was that I was looking in the exact direction of the shooter. And so it hit -- it hit me at an angle that was far less destructive than any other angle. So, that was the miracle. That was …” MUSK: “Yeah!” TRUMP: “For those people who don't believe in God, I think we got to all start thinking about that. I'm a believer. Now, I'm more of a believer.” Campus Faith Alliance affirms student religious free speech Last week, the Religious Freedom Institute announced the launch of a new student initiative, the Campus Faith Alliance. The new initiative seeks to promote religious freedom and freedom of speech on college campuses. David Trimble, the president of the Religious Freedom Institute, told The Christian Post, “People of faith are increasingly pushed to the margins of American society, and this marginalization is occurring with even greater intensity on public university campuses. “Religious freedom says, ‘I can disagree with you even on life's most important questions while still respecting your dignity.' This message needs to be relearned on many campuses today, and the Campus Faith Alliance can be a vehicle for such renewal.” Kansas, Idaho, and Missouri fighting Abortion Kill Pill Back in June, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a lawsuit that challenged the Food and Drug Administration's approval of the abortion kill pill. However, several states are still fighting to restrict the drug. Kansas, Idaho, and Missouri are renewing the challenge in the coming weeks. Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach said, “We are confident, as the case begins moving again, we will prevail. It is likely that this case may end up back at the Supreme Court. It is a question of major national importance.” Small rise in inflation; Small rise in stocks Wholesale inflation rose less than expected last month. The producer price index measures the prices that producers pay for goods and services before they reach customers. That index rose by only 0.1% compared to June. Wholesale prices reflect a broader slowdown in price increases. U.S. stocks rose in response to the news. The S&P 500 was up 1.5% yesterday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.9%. And the Nasdaq Composite was up 2.2%. Olympic gold medalist sings Gospel song at press conference And finally, another Paris Olympian praised God after winning a medal. Last Friday, Germany's Yemisi Ogunleye won gold in the women's shot put with a throw that spanned 65 feet and 6 inches. She slipped and fell on her first attempt due to rainy conditions. However, she said she overcame the setback with God's help, encouraging herself by singing a Gospel song. Listen to her sing it again for reporters. REPORTER: “Yemisi, is it true you sing in the Gospel Choir?” OGUNLEYE: “Yes.” REPORTER: “What song was going through your head tonight?” OGUNLEYE: (laughs) “So, after falling, I went back to my seat, and I sang a song. It means ‘I almost let go.' It goes like this. (laughs) “I almost let go. I was quite at the edge of a breakthrough, but couldn't see it. The Devil really had me, but Jesus came and grabbed me. He held me close so I wouldn't let go. God's mercy kept me so I wouldn't let go. “So, I'm here today because God kept me. I'm alive today only because of His grace. Oh, He kept me. God kept me. God's mercies kept me so I wouldn't let go. “That was the song that I was just singing at the time. (clapping) “After seeing where the shot landed, and I knew it's hopefully gonna be enough for the gold medal, I just went on my knees and said, ‘Thank you, Jesus.'” 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, August 14th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Kyle Chalmers is an Olympic champion and after Paris, a 9x Olympic medalist, winning two silvers and a bronze at these most recent games. The Australian swimming legend logged a 47.xx (flat start and relays) seven times throughout the 9-day meet, with his only 100 free swim not in that category coming in his prelims 100 free, where he was 48.0. Chalmers was kind enough to take some time out of his engagement celebration in Norway to chat about the highs and lows of his experience in Paris. Coming into his 3rd Olympics, Chalmers was dealing with injury and had to change coaches and training locations 4 months prior. Despite this, he is still walking away with his 3rd individual medal in the 100 free, a historic feat.

Send us a Text Message. In celebration of the Summer Olympics, we're reprising some past episodes featuring guests who have been there! Justin Spring went from tumbling around his neighborhood to later winning NCAA gymnastics titles and eventually earning a place on the 2008 Olympic team. The road getting there had its share of twists and turns (pun intended), including a slew of injuries leading up to the Olympics. Justin shares behind-the-scenes stories of his journey, from the lowest moment in his gymnastics career (when he had to army-crawl to his coach's room due to excruciating pain); to the mental techniques he relied on to get his body back into shape; to what life was really like in the Olympic Village. Justin is now a college gymnastics coach (formerly for the University of Illinois men; now for the University of Alabama women). We learn about pressure, expectations, why men's gymnastics is losing popularity (and college teams) in the U.S., and why competing for "perfect 10s" makes women's gymnastics much more entertaining. 2020 Olympic medalist, Bella Sims, experienced something all swimmers do, a challenging meet. Hers was, of course, a consequential one--the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. Many fans expected a strong performance in Indy after Sims' lights-out NCAA Championships this past spring. Spoiler alert! Sims was not sick and did not miss her taper at Olympic Trials. From her perspective, and her Sandpipers' club coach, Ron Aitken, the reason was very specific. Sims unpacks it all in this podcast, talks about her competition ahead at this week's SPEEDO SUMMER NATIONALS, and she charts her future.
