In this Episode of the Viral Volley Podcast, ascending pro volleyball athlete Alaina Chacon jumps after she and partner Maddie Anderson go 2-0 at the opening weekend of the AVP League in Belmar, NJ. Before that weekend, Alaina has always been one of those "watchlist" athletes from her days in HS indoor, to Florida St., and now the Beach Pro Tour and the AVP. One of three tallented sisters, Alaina has been a switch-blocker on the beach but has also been a lightning quick defender with a full toolbox of attacks-- that include a very heavy hammer. This week she reflects on her volleyball beginnings, getting discovered by coaches Hector Gutierrez of TCU and Brooke Niles at Florida St. After finding success at the collegiate beach game she ventured into coaching and eventually her pro career where she has continued to find success at both the BPT and AVP! How she had to find a partner rather quickly at the start of the 2026 season being that sister, Morgan was carrying her first baby for Auntie Alaina! What did she do? Did she "...slip into Maddie's (Anderson) DMs?" Nope. She just texted her :). Listen in!

This episode is a deep dive into the volley, a shot Steve and Dave argue is quietly disappearing from the game. They break down grips, ready position, swing path, and the drills needed to build real net instincts, making the case that if players don't learn to volley early, they simply never will. The conversation weaves through grips, stage development, situational training, and the mental barriers that keep players glued to the baseline, with plenty of references to the pros who got it right and the systemic reasons so many juniors never do. Going to the net is not a risk, it's an investment. Also, the return of the GreatBase Tennis merchandise online store! James and Rocco are back after a break from the mic - and there's plenty to unpack. Leeds United have two back-to-back league defeats, Farke's red card and that brilliant press conference, Sunderland's masterclass in anti-football (50 minutes of actual play out of 106 allocated - the stats don't lie), the Ramadan booing controversy and the media's lazy take on it, plus that glorious FA Cup night against Norwich. Sean Longstaff, where did THAT volley come from? We look ahead to Crystal Palace away with Farke back on the touchline, the Brentford night game, and an FA Cup quarter-final trip to West Ham. The Opta supercomputer gives Leeds an 8% chance of going down - but does it know our history? Plus: Ampadu's wobble, Buonanotte's bench life, Archie Gray being the only Spur who cares, and Scubala taking Lincoln City to the top of League One. #952 | Manchester United beat Newcastle 1-0 at Old Trafford and nobody left feeling relaxed. Ed and Dharnish break down an exhausting win defined by one moment of quality and a lot of defensive survival. We talk through Patrick Dorgu's stunning volley, a first Premier League goal that settled the game early, before Newcastle spent the rest of the afternoon throwing everything at United. Injuries, makeshift selections, and long spells without the ball forced Ruben Amorim into a far more conservative second-half approach than planned. There's analysis of the changes after half-time and the decision to protect the lead rather than chase more goals. We also zoom out to the bigger picture: what this result says about United's season, Amorim's risk tolerance, and how January squad questions are becoming harder to avoid. 00:00 Introduction 01:59 First-half setup, tempo, and United's early control 05:17 Second-half siege mentality and defensive reshuffle 11:05 Individual performances 18:54 Amorim's in-game management and tactical compromises 36:27 Press conferences, messaging, and narrative 43:44 Wolves next and what this win means for the season If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts.
