A surprisingly interior movie, our hosts are wowed both by its ambition and the remarkable leading turn from Richard Dreyfuss. Meanwhile, our hosts sip on Highland Park Magnus, a lower-proof, non-age-stated single malt Scotch from the Orkney region. This marks the second Highland Park expression in a row. In episode 11 of the God & Whiskey Podcast, Evan and Drew talk about the church and share a couple of scotches. Drew gives Evan endless grief for his choice, and Evan attempts to defend while they talk about the church. Why does the church matter? What is the church about? To what extend should the culture shape the methods and content of the church? Does the space in which worship happens make a difference? We discuss - and perhaps rant about - all this and more in this episode, a natural follow-up from the last two episodes about baptism and communion. The good news is: the church is of God and will be preserved until the end of time. As discussed in this episode: Drew's excellent Highland Park Magnus here. Evan's possibly questionable McClelland's here. Methodist Article of Religion XIII, "Of the Church," here. EUB Confession of Faith Article V here. Quote from St. Teresa of Avila (Drew mistakenly said Mother Teresa) here. Fat Tire by New Belgium here. Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman here. James K.A. Smith on the liturgy of the mall here. Duke Chapel here. Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception here. Deconsecration service for a UMC church here.

The legendary creator of "Everybody Loves Raymond" and star of "Somebody Feed Phil" returns to the show with his good buddy and co-writer Tom Caltabiano to taste some of Dan's all-time favorite Scotch whiskies while devouring an array of sumptuous dishes at this week's upscale venue, Mama Lion in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Dan opens with a little about the hip venue, Mama Lion (5:00) and announces today’s focus: Scotch (in particular the Macallan Highland Park) and brings on this week's guests (6:00.) Phil Rosenthal delves into the food we’re eating from the Mama Lion menu (9:40) and Dan begins his mini Macallan masterclass (10:18.) More food arrives and Phil shares the joys of filming his food show, "Somebody Feed Phil" (14:22.) Before long they’re all back on the subject of Anthony Bourdain’s ice cube scandal (21:40) and after moving quickly on, Emma learns to like “creamy-custardy” uni (25:13.) Phil shares some of the weirdest things he’s ever ate (27:27) and they all end up drinking Highland Park Magnus (30:10.) The show ends with Phil craving Japanese whisky…find out whether his wish comes true in Part 2!
