It's Valentine's Day, so the Boys bring two bottles worthy of a romantic, expensive holiday! Matt brings The Macallan Harmony Collection Amber Meadow, a highland single malt. It's a bottle that breaks the budget and it's so good, it breaks your heart! Drew brings the Tequila Fortaleza 2024 Winter Blend Reposado, a highly coveted bottle he managed to pick up at suggested retail price. That price will still have your wallet wilting like carnations on February 21st! The Boys wax philosophical on "The Macallan Effect" and dispel the myth that Fortaleza is the "Pappy of Tequila." They discover two QuickSips™ that are some of the best to date, with one clear winner. These bottles are damn near impossible to find, but that's not a problem. Invite your friends, open what you have, listen and sip along, and Make It A Happy Friday!™
If I'm going to deviate from wine I may as well explore one of the most iconic single malt Scotch whiskies, The Macallan. My guest is John MacPherson the Brand Specialist for Eastern Canada. Had the pleasure of tasting Macallan TIME : SPACE Collection, a limited release celebrating their 200th anniversary. I have never been a big spirits fan but it was impossible not to appreciate the level of craftsmanship in this impressive whisky. A great conversation about a world that is admittedly a blind spot for me.

Fah Mai Holdings Group Inc UK head Jacob Carter talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the state of the whisky industry in 2024 and expectations for 2025. Carter highlighted both the challenges and opportunities the sector has faced. He noted significant declines in Scotch whisky exports, with volumes falling by 10.20% during the first half of 2024 due to global economic pressures, inflation, and tariffs. Auction values also saw steep declines, with a 50% drop in fine and rare whisky prices year-over-year in Q2. Additionally, the luxury segment has been under pressure, especially for high-end bottles aged over 50 years. Despite these challenges, Carter pointed out areas of growth, such as increased demand in emerging markets like India (up 17.30%) and Japan (up 13%). Resilient brands like Glenfarclas and Port Ellen have shown modest gains, and iconic labels like Macallan continue to hold their position despite market volatility. Looking ahead to 2025, Carter predicts sustained demand for rare whiskys, further diversification across whisky brands globally, and the rise of digital platforms leveraging blockchain and NFTs for authentication. To new investors in 2025, Carter advised starting with research and understanding market trends, setting clear budgets, diversifying portfolios, and consulting industry experts. Zak Kemble and Gavin Linde, both whiskey enthusiasts, recently discussed their shared passion. Zak recounted his initial negative experience with whiskey and his subsequent journey exploring different varieties. Both agreed on Glenfarclas 15 as a favorite, appreciating its balance of accessibility and flavor, while Gavin also highlighted Glenfiddich for its consistent quality and affordability. Their conversation touched on the unpredictable nature of aging whiskey and the risks involved, drawing parallels with the evolving video game and car industries. Zak, who delved into whiskey around 2015 after retiring from semi-professional athletics, entered the scene just before its surge in popularity. They acknowledged the challenges faced by the whiskey industry, particularly the impact of Covid-19, which led to initial growth followed by a downturn. Zak emphasized the issue of rising prices potentially alienating consumers, stressing the need for a balanced value proposition across different consumer segments. Gavin suggested the shift towards tequilas and rums could be a response to these challenges. The rising prices in the whiskey market, despite no apparent cost increases, were also discussed. They explored the practice of 'whiskey fixing,' where whiskeys are further aged to modify flavor profiles and create limited editions. Gavin shared his experience collecting rare, expensive bottles as potential investments. The investment potential of Scotch whiskey was a key topic, with its rapid growth surpassing other investments like real estate and premium wines. They also touched on limited production and the practice of 'flipping' whiskey for resale rather than consumption. The increasing prices of whiskey, particularly the McAllen edition, were analyzed. Gavin recounted buying the McAllen edition for $89-$95 and witnessing its value soar to $3,000 before dropping to $1,200. Zak highlighted the disparity between the rate of price increases and consumer affordability, particularly when collecting overshadows consumption. The challenges of serving high-end whiskey in bars were also explored, focusing on oxidation and the difficulty of maintaining optimal storage conditions. They emphasized the importance of proper handling to preserve quality and the challenges faced by bartenders in ensuring this. Zak and Gavin shared career highlights, with Zak recounting his visit to the Blair Athol distillery in Scotland, emphasizing its historical significance. They also discussed their whiskey tasting experiences, including a 52-year-old Macallan from 1969 for Zak and a 71-year-old Glenlivet for Gavin, both exceeding expectations despite preconceptions about older whiskeys. The conversation concluded with reflections on the subjective nature of whiskey preferences, the importance of quality control, and the joy of sharing high-quality whiskey with others. They criticized brands prioritizing reputation over quality and emphasized the value of shared experiences over material possessions.

Like an old 80s sitcom, this episode was taped before a live audience of about 90 regular listeners who carried on a vigorous commentary and questions in the Zoom chat, and we had a special guest at the very end—John Hinderaker in the (virtual) flesh! And since we actually recorded during happy hour for a change (and not Saturday morning as has been the case for the last several weeks), we rolled out several whisky choices for the episode.Listeners may know that Lucretia, this week's host, has been partial in the past to Glenmorangie, which the great Kingsley Amis noted "has been called delicate and mild, even faintly sweet." This is not a description anyone would ever use about Lucretia, making this a dubious match. Tonight she had two varieties of Glenfiddich on hand, which Amis called "fruity and well balanced." Maybe she's better matched with Macallan, which Amis says is "powerful yet smooth." That sounds more like it!By popular demand, we took up a news items we didn't get to last week in the crush of shocking news stories, namely Judge Aileen Cannon's ruling that special counsel Jack Smith's appointment as special counsel to torment Trump is unconstitutional. Steve invented a special judicial scale—the Silberman Scale from 1 - 10—for John Yoo to grade the opinion, and he gave it a solid 8, which is pretty darn good. From there—oh my! Lucretia unveiled her handcrafted tin foil cowboy hat, as we kicked around whether the loss of trust in key government institutions (cough, cough—FBI—cough, cough, or cough—Secret Service—cough) is because they are merely incompetent and negligent, or whether their carelessness is deliberate. From there John Hinderaker gave us an update on the FBI investigation of the firebombing of his office building back in January, and finally we all gave our predictions for Kamala Harris's running mate, but not until we rolled out the first of whiat is doubtless to be many weeks of ritual denunciation of Harris. So if you missed the live taping, pour yourself a nice, dry single malt and settle in.

The premium alcohol industry is about more than just indulgence. It's a category that is garnering greater attention from consumers, investors and collectors. Increased disposable incomes, celebrity culture and social media has created new avenues for brand recognition and sales. Partnerships with other luxury brands also bring cross pollination appeal and is an area top spirit brands are looking to take more advantage of. Investing in premium alcohol is also an area of growth. Brand, age and rarity set the standard for big prices. The whisky category has seen records consistently broken in the last few years as wealthy individuals battle for the best bottles. In November 2023, a single bottle of The Macallan 1926 Valerio Adami, one of only 40 bottles originally released, sold for a new record price of £2.18 million at Sotheby's in London. But there are some headwinds in both the primary and secondary markets that brands and consumers need to weather. In this episode of The Next Five we speak with Duncan McFadzean, Managing Director at Noble & Co, who discusses the growth and challenges of the primary market and how brands can buck the economic downturn. Jaume Ferras, Creative Director at The Macallan, shows how luxury brands are working together to increase share of pocket. Jonny Fowle, Global Head of Whisky at Sotheby's, conveys the highs and lows of investing in the secondary market and calls for the joys of consumption as well as investing in fine bottles. Back in May Rosalind took a trip to Speyside to witness some of the celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of The Macallan. As part of these celebrations they undertook an extraordinary collaboration with Cirque du Soleil. It would appear that more and more often these days whisky brands are going to extreme lengths to market and promote their products. Macallan has certainly become a part of the high end of the market so Rosalind set out to learn more about the celebrations and whether the industry is being changed by this drive to create luxury lifestyle products and more and more elaborate collaborations. First up she spoke to Ruth Wylie who is Global Experiential Lead at Macallan who tells her about the celebrations which are afoot and the importance that nature plays for the distillery. She also chatted to Marie-Hélène Delage, Creative Director at Cirque Du Soleil about how they developed their show with Macallan. Finally, Rosalind wanted to speak to a whisky expert about recent changes in the whisky market and how this is affecting sales and availability of certain brands. Mark Littler, Whisky Broker and Market Analyst, talked to Rosalind about the significant changes that have taken place since 2015 and how collaborations like this one are becoming more the norm for those interested in investing in whisky. It's a fascinating listen and a subject matter no doubt we'll be returning to again and again. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome back to another episode, this one is a great time. let me know if you like the new intros Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3 https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshaman Whiskeyshamanpodcast@gmail.com When you hear “Texas” and “whiskey” together, what comes to mind? Do the words conjure an image of John Wayne sauntering into a West Texas frontier saloon? Or maybe you think of one of the many country songs about whiskey recorded by Texans, like Kris Kristofferson's “Whiskey, Whiskey” or Willie Nelson's “Whiskey River.” Given how closely tied whiskey and Texas are in the public imagination, it might surprise you to know that twenty years ago, there were no whiskey distilleries at all in the Lone Star State. The history of whiskey in Texas is one of long gaps, pervasive struggles, and underground bootleggers. During the 19th century, there were a number of distilleries in Texas, some legal and others . . . less so. But that all changed with Prohibition, when the state's distilling traditions were almost stamped out for good. Distilling became legal in Texas again in 1935, but the state's whiskey distilleries quite simply never recovered from the Volstead Act. Not until recently, that is. It's remarkable how things can change in a couple of decades. When Texas decides to do something, there are no half-measures—and whiskey distilling is no exception. Since the founding of Texas's first two distilleries in Central Texas in the late aughts, Texas bourbons, ryes and single malts have exploded onto the world stage. As a matter of fact, it took only a handful of years after those first distilleries were founded before Texas distilleries began to win major awards alongside stalwarts from Kentucky and Scotland and Ireland—and these days the Lone Star State is now being spoken of as a major world center for top-shelf craft whiskey. In 2012, a Balcones Single Malt won first prize at London's prestigious “Best in Glass” competition, beating out rivals from storied Scottish houses like The Macallan and Glenmorangie. In the years since that historic upset, Texas distilleries have continued their string of upsets. In 2020, Ironroot Republic's Harbinger Bourbon Whiskey was named the “World's Best Bourbon,” and in 2022, Acre Distilling's Longhair Jim Bourbon took home gold at the US Open Whiskey and Spirits Competition. Am I just grumpy, or is it something else? The stereotype of the grumpy old man could have its roots in a condition known as irritable male syndrome. It's clinically referred to as andropause, or male menopause. Like female menopause, andropause includes physical and emotional changes that also seem dependent on changes in hormone levels. Irritable male syndrome can have a big impact on your relationships. To know whether you're experiencing irritable male syndrome, and how you might treat it and improve your relationships, it's important to recognize some of the more obvious symptoms.

And we're starting the year with a belter in Matt Lever.Multi talented.Multi awarded.Funny.Charming.Loves a big idea.Loves a gag.And loves the in-house BtB flapjacks. We spent a leisurely hour with Matt chatting billboards, from his very first one for Macallan that he bizarrely spotted while on holiday in New York…to DOH anti-smoking, Tfl, Trident Gum, Gym Box and closing on Breast Cancer Now and the perfectly pitched topical work that ran during the Women's World Cup.Listen out too for Matt talking about The Chat - the UK's first drama series to play out on a messaging app group chat on WhatsApp. An audacious idea which not only garnered many awards and much PR, but more importantly has helped women cope with the disease.Matt, thanks so much again for coming in and sharing, it was a real pleasure. And for those after extra content, we're also posting on the website Matt's good copywriting doc, which is basically a reminder of what great work looks like.

Today, my guest is Ruth Macallan. Originally from Edinburgh, Ruth now lives for most of the year in Zambia with her husband and her two children, who are 2 and 5. We talk about what Ruth's child-led days look like, what it means to allow a child the freedom to go at their own pace, and how living in rural Zambia has helped Ruth to learn how to slow down and to appreciate the beauty in the moment. And, we also chat about the importance of creating community, travelling with children, and of course, taking good care of ourselves. Prisma was last seen in Downtown Dallas walking into the Olympus at Ross apartment complex (now named Macallan at Ross) at around 6 pm - her white jeep seen abandoned nearby. She was witnessed on CCTV footage pacing back and forth on her cellphone and making phone calls, close by her ex boyfriend, Ryan's, apartment near the elevator, just over 3 hours after having lunch with him. She was reported missing after she failed to pick up her son from the babysitter that evening - something Prisma would never do is abandon her only child. The chilling thing about this is that it appears there was nothing off about the day she went missing, at least that's what WE thought - until we dove in. Is there a red herring within this episode? Any clues that point to what happened to Prisma, or where she is, or what happened? We will explore it all, as well as statistics on missing persons and why this case is an example of why we all need to pay way more attention and diligence to missing minorities.SOURCES -Kaylee Palmer (next two links)https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10NNZZ4vNWU3sAxgwlQ5iPWetMfydbt7Whttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yOd5ArljbdCzGjvwLeF8fhOm7JFM7URl3yZ4hyr2WdQ/edit#gid=0Dan Fuchs (Prisma's stepdad, interviewed VIA phone call with Courtney)https://www.facebook.com/search/pages/?q=find%20prisma%20reyes&sde=AbpW75ive6444ynNsPN35-ulI0tUrVnwTINieru9Zysq7EssAW9QNdxqgkECMwlGpeN7DPM8LUFBib-VShJrSY3Shttps://thecrimewire.com/true-crime/Missing-Prisma-Denisse-Peralta-Reyeshttps://people.com/crime/prisma-denisse-peralta-reyes-missing-texas-mom/#:~:text=Prisma%20celebrated%20her%2026th%20birthday,at%20972%2D285%2D6336.https://www.wfaa.com/amp/article/news/local/prisma-reyes-still-missing-mesquite-texas-four-years-later/287-987b81c9-7bf5-4b53-a6f8-879caa2b737d https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/dallas-county/bring-her-home-mesquite-mother-missing-since-wednesday/287-4f47e160-d25c-459a-aeea-59cf88f2a34fhttps://www.the-sun.com/news/5128029/prisma-reyes-disappearance-update-anniversary-missing-mom/amp/https://www.websleuths.com/forums/threads/tx-prisma-denisse-peralta-reyes-26-did-not-pick-up-her-child-mesquite-17-apr-2019-3.474603/page-45?fbclid=IwAR0YgNPoUAlRw2bV1Ci3DMO4MsNA7D_TVSiqVpNQsa2yn8NRsLTjWNcfULU#post-18077110https://www.insider.com/spikes-in-missing-black-latina-women-gets-little-media-attention-2021-9?amphttps://thegreyhoundnews.com/5699/news/there-is-an-epidemic-of-missing-hispanic-and-latinx-women/https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Prisma_Reyeshttps://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/euptfd/what_happened_to_prisma_denisse_peralta_reyes/https://podtext.ai/going-west-true-crime/prisma-reyes-296 (going west) OUR LINKS - Become a patron! With some parts of Scotland facing another long, dry summer, distilleries are making plans to cope with expected water shortages from the lochs and rivers that provide essential water for distilling. Wick's Old Pulteney Distillery has already announced plans to shut down production for eight weeks this summer after losing much of the last two summers to drought. We'll talk with distillery manager Malcolm Waring on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Balmenach Distillery has received a £4 million upgrade to make the distillery more energy-efficient, a bottle of the rare 81-year-old The Reach from The Macallan is up for grabs in British Columbia, and there's a host of new whiskies being released in time for Father's Day.
