On 6th May 2023, King Charles III will be crowned in Westminster Abbey in an ancient ceremony that dates back a thousand years. The Coronation service is, at its heart, a religious event in which King Charles swears an oath to uphold “the Protestant Reformed Religion Established by Law” and is anointed with holy oil by The Archbishop of Canterbury. But is this religious service representative of modern Britain? What does it say about who we are today? And will it speak to people of all faiths and none? Aleem Maqbool speaks to The Most Reverend Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, about the meaning of the rituals and symbolism of this national event. His reflections lead to a discussion on the role of The Coronation in our modern world. Aleem is joined by Professor Ian Bradley, author of God Save the King and Emeritus Professor of Cultural and Spiritual History at the University of St Andrews, Chief Executive of "Republic" Graham Smith and Sejal Sehmi, U.K. Editor for Brown Girl Magazine. Domestic violence is an issue that impacts all types of people, regardless of background, education, or status. Aysha Qamar is a writer, poet, and advocate based in the tri-state area, with experience addressing issues of violence against women, language access, and Islamophobia. In this episode she shares how people - especially immigrants - end up becoming trapped in domestic violence situations. Aysha offers a top-down perspective on the severity and variety of issues that South Asian and other communities need to be aware of such as finance, immigration laws, family dynamics, limited resources, and more. It is due to these issues that not just women but men face violence as well. Perhaps most surprisingly, we learn why education isn't always the solution to domestic violence situations As a poet and freelance writer, Aysha has been published in various publications including: Brown Girl Magazine, the Huffington Post, The Muslim Observer, Everyday Feminism, The Teal Mango, The Tempest, the New York Post's Decider, and elsewhere. Common themes in her work include advocating for immigration reform, gender parity, feminism, xenophobia and cultural competency. We are so excited to be kicking off our series with a quick ice-breaker. Before we interview some of your favorite South Asian talents on and offscreen, we wanted to introduce ourselves and why the hell we've decided to tackle this endeavor. TV and Film are so much more integrated in our lives than we realize. The ideas we develop about the world and people, even the way we develop...so much of it comes from what is portrayed on the screen. So why are careers in these industries so frowned upon? Why are they discouraged in our community? This is exactly why we are working with Brown Girl Magazine to bring you this podcast series. We will interview South Asians in Hollywood on and off the screen who are making a name for themselves and the art that influences how we view the world.  It's important to us to use our voices to support our community, highlight the positives of a life in the arts, and dispel the tired, old notions of entertainment and Hollywood.

Eating disorders are the #1 cause of death among all mental health disorders. And yet, South Asians have very little awareness about them. Why? What are eating disorders? Are they a pattern of restricting, binging, or purging food? Or are they actually a symptom of some greater unaddressed mental health issue and/or past traumas? In this episode, I speak with writer Vaidehi Gajjar (@vgajjar95, Brown Girl Magazine, We Are Saath, Circuit Sehat, The PFA Institute) about our past shared experiences as South Asians with an eating disorder. We talk about the unique ways our culture can feed into and/or delay treatment of them, as well as intimate details about how it personally affected our illnesses. In addition, we break down how we think they developed, the recovery process, relapse, and the slippery slope of comparisons in mental health. We also discuss why it's difficult to predict the future of the Desi condition of E.D.s and suggest ways to reframe the question of eating disorders especially as it pertains to the Desi condition. On this episode, we have another podcast host and DJ, New Jersey native, Shri. He plays in the New York/New Jersey area by the DJ name, Shri Mix. We love a good play on words. We talk about how he got into the disc jockey business and how it means more than just playing music at a party. He talks about how empowering it is to be in control of the ambience with the music he plays. He plays a mix of Bollywood and American music in a way to unite the guests whether it's at a dance club or a wedding event and make sure they're having the best experience. In his own podcast, Mobile DJ Tips, he helps other aspiring djs to be the best entertainer they can be. He doesn't see the community as competitive because everyone has one goal, and that is to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. We loved having him and his uplifting personality on! You can find him on Instagram @shrimix Find Mobile DJ Tips on iTunes and subscribe for great marketing tools! Thanks to Kaly for today's episode! Check out more of his amazing music @kalysay As always, thank you to Brown Girl Magazine for creating a great platform for South Asian people to tell their stories and for empowering our generation. On this week's episode we talk to the incredibly inspiring, intelligent & strong Alexa Rahman. She tells her full story, on her terms, for the first time ever. We are truly floored by the power in which Alexa took her life back after being in an abusive relationship & to see her fight back against Domestic Violence with complete relentlessness. It's time we start teaching kids about the realities of love, dating & sexual assault in every form. If we are teaching them sexual education & about birth control, we need to be having a real discussion about pregnancy, assault, domestic violence & what a healthy relationship actually looks like. We had such a good time interviewing the ladies at Brown Girl Magazine we brought them back to talk again. This time, we spoke to them from the cushy offices of their day jobs at Zee TV. We pick up right where we left off in our first interview, discussing homosexuality. We explore what the "Girl" in "Brown Girl" represents, and who specifically can be a part of that community. We move quickly to the world of Bollywood and discuss the ways in with Bollywood stories are progressing, as well as the impact they have. One impact is revealed as the ladies recall some personal anecdotes, and how Kamini's parents' divorce cause a shift in her relationship with Bollywood. We also are gonna get destroyed by the internet because we both judge the greek system, and weren't exactly shy about doing it...so listen to our episode and join us to discuss in a few days!

In the weekly discussion segment of American Desis, Akaash and Arjun discuss themes that resonated with them during the interview. This week, however, things break from the norm and the fellas open with a Memorial Day tribute to an American Desi Hero. Then they express concern for their people in India who are suffering through the heatwave. That leads to a conversation inspired by a point made by Arjun's Nani, and the fellas wonder whether struggle leads to unity. Then, one last order of housekeeping as there is a discussion about Bobby Jindal that was supposed to happen last week. Arjun is justifiably appalled by some comments made by Bobby Jindal (no surprise there), while Akaash believes we should just stop giving attention to him altogether. Then, once all the housekeeping items are taken care of, they discuss their interview with the ladies of Brown Girl Magazine. They recall the tension that the word "fluff" seemed to invoke, but repeat that in their eyes it's not necessarily a bad thing. They also speak on the struggle that it must be to report news- balancing news with entertainment, speaking on behalf of a company rather than simply yourself, and so on. Then, once again, the conversation moves to how to communicate with your parents about uncomfortable topics. Arjun recalls a story about his own parents' maturity, and Akaash implores the listeners to simply overcome the awkwardness and talk. Finally, we close with thoughts from our community. As always, we ask 'all to review and rate. Discuss and share our podcast! We are only as strong as our community and we continue to hope you join!

Two brown boys meet two Brown Girls. Is there truly anything else to say about what this episode is? Fine. We'll say more. We had the pleasure of speaking with Trisha Sakhuja and Kamini Ramdeen- the two managing editors of Brown Girl Magazine. What is Brown Girl Magazine? Its an online daily publication that is geared to South Asian female issues and their empowerment. We talk to these fine brown ladies about the origin of their publication and how they both got involved. We chart the growth from a small infrequent blog to the daily magazine it has become and what pitfalls they avoided along the way. We find out how these two women were raised and what part of their history inspired such a passion for their fellow chocolate looking females.    The conversation then moves towards the structure of the magazine, from the title itself to the way they navigate the type of material they post. The ratio of fluff to hard hitting to opinion pieces that get published prompts a debate on the nature of fluff itself and its necessity and somehow leads to a spirited discussion about make up. We question the make-up industry’s intention and whether the very nature of make up might be a disservice to female empowerment.    Upon reaching a semi-conclusion of that topic, we dive into one of the articles that was posted during the week of the interview that discussed a Desi woman who was living with her family and discovered her pregnancy. It happened out of wedlock and was a pregnancy she hid until she ended up at the hospital. Purvi tried to abort the pregnancy with pills she had gotten out of country and ended up with a still birth and seriously injuring herself. This triggers a conversation about the nature of the South Asian family and the lengths we go to to seem perfect to our parents. We then discuss what needs to be done to make these relationships better or at least healthier. Our discussion of this episode will drop this coming Friday so if you have something you wanna say, reach out. Enjoy.
