Britain's most popular pint has a major flaw. It takes 2 minutes to pour. This should put people off. Most of us don't love waiting at the bar. And yet, despite this flaw, one in every nine British pints sold is Guinness. Why? Well, today's guest, behavioural scientist Richard Shotton, says it's down to some evidence-backed consumer psychology. --- Read Hacking The Human Mind: https://amzn.to/47lpcbT Sign up for my newsletter: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/mailing-list Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phill-agnew-22213187/ Watch Nudge on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@nudgepodcast/ --- Today's sources Aronson, E., Willerman, B., & Floyd, J. In an industry driven by grassroots grit, passion, and what at times feels like flying by the seat of your pants, professional development often takes a backseat to production schedules and tight budgets. But staying competitive and keeping your staff inspired doesn't require expensive conferences or high-ticket programs. This session explores how breweries of all sizes—especially small and independent operations—can embrace professional growth on a shoestring budget. We'll dive into practical, scalable strategies for skill-building, staff retention, and team morale that don't break the bank. From peer-to-peer learning and free resources to low-cost certifications and mentorship models, attendees will walk away with actionable tools to grow their teams and invest in better informed staff.Because in beer, just like in brewing, better outcomes come from continuous refinement—and you don't need a million-dollar system to make a damn good pint.Panelists: Aaron Gore (Beer30 by The 5th Ingredient)Chris Leguizamon (Fonta Flora Brewery)Ryan Mayfield (Craft Leadership)Moderator: Cat Pearce (Raleigh BrewingJoin us in person for CBP Connects New OrleansDecember 8–10, 2025It's never been more important to connect: https://cbpconnects.com/

Transcript [music] Welcome to Food Safety in a Minute from Washington State University Extension. Did you know Washington State produces 124 million 40-pound boxes of apples each year? Popular varieties include Gala, Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Honeycrisp, Fuji, and Cosmic Crisp®. It's the perfect time to preserve a little comfort making and preserving apple butter. Sweet, spiced, and shelf-stable. For food safety and quality, always use a research-based, tested recipe and follow directions carefully. The National Center for Home Food Preservation is a trusted source. Eight pounds of apples yield 8 to 9 pints of apple butter. Pint jars are processed in a boiling water canner for five to fifteen minutes, depending on altitude. The Center also offers safe, research-based recipes for applesauce, spiced apple rings, sliced apples, and reduced-sugar apple butter. Thanks for listening, I'm Susie Craig.

A16z Podcast Key Takeaways Be dispositionally optimistic on technology and refuse false nostalgia about the past The best investors have an extremely open mind and believe they will run into the next big thing at any given moment In VC, Type 2 errors are catastrophically expensive: “It's better to be in the game and wrong than not in the game at all.”Every new technology comes with a moral panic that it is going to ruin society The only comparison for AI is the creation of the computer itself The state of inflation: If there is a hole in your drywall, it is cheaper to put a flat-screen TV over it than to replace the actual drywall The Subsidy Spiral: Western democracies are trapped in a 50-year cycle where rising costs (housing, education, healthcare) trigger government subsidies that inflate prices further, and no politician can win by telling voters to stop voting for more subsidies – making the doom loop politically inevitable How to spot the next big trend: (1) What are nerds spending their time on during nights and weekends? (2) Pay attention to what ‘everyone' thinks is a bad idea and (3) Run towards new technologies that foster internet cults The Elon Method of Management: Bypass all middle management, talk only to engineers who know the truth, and spend each week parachuting into the company's single biggest bottleneck; stay up all night solving it with the team actually building things“I have found people willing to tolerate any level of chronic pain in order to avoid acute pain. People would much rather lose slowly over five years than have the conversation that involves a dramatic change to stop losing.” – Marc Andreessen Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgToday we're sharing a feed drop from Cheeky Pint, where Stripe cofounder and president John Collison chats with legends in technology over a pint of Guinness. In this episode, John is joined by a16z cofounder Marc Andreessen and tech investor Charlie Songhurst for a candid conversation about bubbles, downturns, and the psychology of markets. It's a Politics and a Pint edition of Snollygoster. As we did in August, we gathered about 200 of our closest friends at Seventh Son Brewing in Columbus, where we talked politics while enjoying craft beers.
SUMMARY: Matt's in St. John, but not the one he expected to visit. With Scoopfest still fresh in our hearts, the chat extolls its highlights… the Bucket Shows, a windy but fun Whiskey BBQ, all the fantastic performers, trivia battles, and podcast tapings, and much love for Goudeau and Pint of Plain. We finish off with a "One Hit" Scoopardy.

It's a huge episode for loving Britain, but more importantly it's a huge episode for cagoules. This is the UK's number 1 cagoule podcast, and a very special guest has got Elis barking like a waterproof dog in heat.If you're anti-outer layers then this is not the place to be.It's slightly lighter ground on the anecdote front as John has just written down ‘Autumn' and Elis can't even handle drinking two pints. A loss for James but there's more wins for Robins in a week where he smells different for the first time since 1998.Plus we ask, "what would happen if you gave a sherbet dip dab to a pagan?"Bonus Bureau content is available on Saturday morning, only on BBC Sounds, and if you want to get on everything from parkas to perfumes it's elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.

You've been a bartender for years, and alcohol has been a constant in your social life, your travels, and career—so how do you stop drinking when you work in a bar? For Gina, the turning point came when she realized that alcohol no longer added value to her life, in fact, it almost seemed mundane to drink. After reading This Naked Mind by Annie Grace, Gina unlocked a new way of thinking about alcohol and began to see how much freedom there was without it. In this episode, Gina shares her journey and the strategies that helped her break free from a life dictated by alcohol. In this episode, Gina and Cole discuss: How alcohol became an "annoying albatross" after being a constant part of her life. Her unique experience as a lifelong bartender and solo traveler, with alcohol as a companion. Pondering the question - how do you stop drinking when you work in a bar The profound impact of Annie Grace's "This Naked Mind" and how it confirmed everything she thought. Why she didn't tell a single soul about her journey for a year. Rediscovering her creative potential and finishing a novel started 15 years ago in a "drunken stupor." The financial benefits of sobriety – saving $10,000 in a year and two months! How she manages to still interview bartenders and write about spirits without craving a drink. Gina's powerful message to her past self: "You do not have to be drunk to have fun."
