This week on Whiskey@Work, the guys pour a few glasses and wander through the story behind one of the most recognizable names in Scotch. The conversation starts with the surprisingly scrappy origins of Johnnie Walker, a grocery store kid who blended tea before blending whisky, and the clever ideas that turned his family brand into a global icon. Then things get interesting on the tasting table. Matt D'Hont from Johnson Brothers and Diageo stops by with a lineup that sparks plenty of reactions. The crew explores the brand-new Johnnie Walker Black Cask, a bourbon-barrel take on a classic blend designed to welcome bourbon drinkers into the Scotch world. From there, the night drifts into smoky territory with Lagavulin 11, a sweet-peat Islay that surprises even the skeptics. A Caribbean rum-finished Crown Royal sneaks into the lineup, and the episode wraps with an unexpected palate cleanser that nobody saw coming.Stories, history, a few strong opinions, and several pours later, one thing becomes clear. The best part of whiskey often happens around the conversation that comes with it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Davide Ansalone, known as "Whiskey Munich," joined Gavin Linde on the Rolex Whiskey Passion Project podcast to share his unique journey into the whiskey world. He discussed how he went from discovering smoky Scotch to becoming an influential blogger and photographer who collaborates with the whiskey industry. Highlights of his story include an impulsive, yet valuable, purchase of a 30-year-old Lagavulin and a deep dive into the historical importance of the Italian whiskey market, which set the stage for "pinch me" moments involving rare whiskies such as a 21-year-old Brora.

The Sams focuses on the Champions League race, as five clubs can now qualify, and five clubs are battling for the final two spots. In this episode of EmbellishPod, I had the pleasure of welcoming Josh and Jason from Single Cask Nation, a pioneering independent bottler in the whiskey industry. We dove deep into the fascinating world of independent bottling, exploring its significance in the whiskey landscape, particularly in the United States, where it is still a relatively novel concept. We kicked off the conversation with an introduction to Single Cask Nation, where Josh and Jason shared their journey from whiskey enthusiasts to independent bottlers. They recounted how their passion for whiskey led them to champion lesser-known distilleries and how they aim to highlight unique expressions of whiskey that might otherwise go unnoticed. Jason took us through his personal journey into whiskey, starting from his university days in Aberdeen, where he discovered the joys of single malts. He reminisced about his early experiences and how they shaped his love for whiskey. Josh, on the other hand, shared a compelling story about his transition from being straight edge to discovering the rich flavors of whiskey, particularly through his first encounter with Lagavulin 16. This moment sparked his deep dive into the world of whiskey, showcasing how flavors can evoke powerful memories and emotions. As we continued our discussion, we touched on the challenges of selecting casks for bottling. Jason explained their meticulous selection process, emphasizing the importance of texture and the connection between the nose and palate. They shared insights into how they taste through numerous casks, often experiencing minimal disagreement due to their shared passion and understanding of quality whiskey. We also explored the evolution of their brand and the role of social media in building a community around Single Cask Nation. Josh highlighted the positive atmosphere in their Facebook group, where members engage in supportive discussions about whiskey, share experiences, and connect with one another. This sense of community has been crucial in maintaining authenticity and trust with their audience. Towards the end of the episode, we discussed the balance between education and production, as they navigate their roles as both educators and independent bottlers. They emphasized their commitment to transparency and authenticity, ensuring that their recommendations and products reflect their genuine passion for whiskey. Overall, this episode was a rich exploration of the independent bottling world, filled with personal anecdotes, insights into the whiskey selection process, and a celebration of the community that surrounds this beloved spirit. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed having this enlightening conversation with Josh and Jason from Single Cask Nation. 00:00:00 - Introduction to EmbellishPod 00:00:47 - Meet the Guests: Single Cask Nation 00:01:06 - What is Single Cask Nation? 00:02:54 - Jason's Journey into Whisky 00:05:48 - Josh's Unique Introduction to Whisky 00:07:01 - The Nostalgia of Whisky 00:10:02 - Musical Background: Josh's Passion for Bass 00:11:41 - Jason's Love for Pool 00:12:51 - Daily Drinkers: What They Enjoy 00:15:15 - Exploring Independent Bottling 00:21:02 - Selection Process for Casks 00:25:51 - Disagreements in Selection 00:29:07 - Challenges of Independent Bottling in the U.S. 00:34:54 - Maintaining Authenticity and Trust 00:40:02 - The Role of Social Media 00:42:04 - Community Building through Social Media 00:49:36 - Final Thoughts on Social Media

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Ewan Morgan, Head of Whiskey Outreach and National Luxury Ambassador for Diageo who owns some of the largest liquor brands in the world, from Tanqueray & Casamigos, to Guiness and Non-Alcoholic brand Seedlip. But what most may not know, is that Diageo also owns a fair share of high end labels too, like Lagavulin and Mortlach. And after four decades of closure, the iconic Port Ellen distillery in the Island of Islay is reopening with Diageo in a historic moment for the Scotch industry. Ewan and I chat about the Scotch Whiskey collecting market, growing up in a family who lives and breathes the spirit, and he even takes me through a tasting of the new Port Ellen Gemini release, retailing for fifty thousand dollars. And to top it all off, we recorded at an amazing ten million dollar apartment on One Wall Street thanks to our friends at Optimist. Ewan is truly an expert which is why he's worked his way up to have what most would consider one of the greatest jobs in the world. Lagavulin is a peaty, yet gentle scotch. It's the more mature one when compared to it's neighbors (Laphroaig & Ardbeg). Nick Offerman worked with Lagavulin to age their whiskey in a Caribbean Rum Cask, and it just didn't work in our opinion. Have you had this before? Check out the video to find out! The Oldest Independent Bottlers and a Brand New Scottish Distillery Are you fascinated by the rich history of whisky and the art of independent bottling? Join me as I welcome esteemed friend Gary Pickard, Northeast Regional Manager of Pacific Edge Wine and Spirits. Gary takes us on a captivating journey through the histories of two iconic independent bottlers, William Cadenheads and AD Rattray. From George Duncan's founding of William Cadenheads in 1842 to Robert W. Duthie's tragic end and the company's resilience through decades of challenges, this episode is packed with intriguing insights and personal anecdotes from visits to Cadenheads boutique stores in London and Edinburgh. As we continue, we explore the storied legacy of Campbeltown whiskies and the remarkable survival of distilleries like Springbank and Glen Scotia. Gary shares his deep knowledge of AD Rattray, tracing its evolution from Andrew Dewar Rattray's grocery store in 1868 to its current state under Tim Morrison's leadership. We delve into the Morrison family's significant impact on the whisky industry, including their acquisitions of Bowmore, Glengarry, and Auchentoshan, now under Suntory's ownership. This episode underscores the critical role independent bottlers play in bringing the hidden gems of lesser-known distilleries to light. Finally, we unravel the complexities of Islay whiskies, discussing the distinctive features of renowned distilleries like Bowmore, Lagavulin, and Bruichladdich. We explore the cultural contrasts between Japanese and Anglo-American approaches to whisky production and the challenges faced during Suntory's acquisition of Beam. Additionally, we touch on the resurgence of distilleries within Glasgow's city limits, spotlighting the modern marvel that is Clydeside Distillery. This episode is a rich tapestry of whisky history, culture, and the intricate world of independent bottling that any whisky enthusiast won't want to miss. If Dickens were to write this intro, ‘ol Chuck might pen, “There is no doubt Drew does not like Scotch. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the podcast you about to hear.” Welcome to The Scotchification of Drew. Today, Matt brings 9, count ‘em, 9, bottles of Scotch, and leads Drew down a journey from mild to wild, easy to peaty, and in the process makes Drew a fan of Scotch! If you dare, pick up these bottles: Dewar's 12 Chivas Regal 12 Glenfarclas 12 Signatory Speyside Mortlach 10 Signatory Speyside Auchroisk 10 Talisker 10 Bowmore 15 Ardbeg 10 Lagavulin 16 Listen and Sip along as the Boys tiptoe into the deep-end of Scotch, talk about St. Paddy's Day movies, tangent to Scottish Actors, and luckily avoid what could have been another Tom Hanks geek-out! Invite your friends, hide their car keys, crack these bottles, and Make It A Happy Friday™!

@Theperfectfifth @rampursinglemalt @sevensealsinnovation @kavalanwhisky @lagavulinwhisky Are you ready to elevate your whisky knowledge?
Louisville's Michter's Distillery took top honors in the 2023 Drinks International survey to find the “world's most admired” whiskey brand. Andrea Wilson is the Master of Maturation for Michter's, as well as the company's chief operating officer, and has the final say on any whisky that carries the Michter's name. We'll talk with Andrea about the pressure of living up to that reputation, as well as her Hall of Fame whisky-making career, on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Kentucky lawmakers have approved a bill to close loopholes in the state's Vintage Distilled Spirits Law. We'll have the details on that and the rest of the week's whisky news, including a rare collaboration between Australia's Starward Whisky and Lagavulin.
