Steven Spielberg is the most famous filmmaker alive, which is exactly why almost nobody actually understands him. Chris and Daniel use Disclosure Day, Spielberg's new alien chase thriller with Emily Blunt, to argue that the "safe, mainstream" reputation is a decades-long misdirection: underneath the crowd-pleasing surface is a genuinely weird, deeply personal artist who has been smuggling strange, uncomfortable ideas inside blockbuster packaging since at least Close Encounters. They trace it through Fabelman's casting David Lynch as John Ford, the theory that Kubrick handed Spielberg AI specifically because Spielberg's glossy reputation could disguise a bleak, unnerving film, and the moment James Lipton caught Spielberg off guard by connecting his parents directly to Close Encounters on camera. Disclosure Day itself is proving strangely divisive, and Chris and Daniel dig into why. They break down its Sugarland Express-style chase structure, an Emily Blunt performance that starts as broad comedy and quietly transforms into something much stranger, a train sequence built to feel genuinely dangerous rather than stylized, and the VFX work from longtime collaborator Matthew Butler. Along the way, a detour into Spielberg's actual filmmaking journey, from Close Encounters to Poltergeist to AI, makes the case that his reputation as the "obvious" director has always been the biggest misdirection in his own filmography. To celebrate the release of 'Disclosure Day,' we are looking back on two Steven Spielberg alien movie classics with guest Adam Sirdoreus. Stick around for part 2 in which we feature Adam's updated full Spielberg ranking. In 1977, Steven Spielberg followed up the smash success of JAWS with 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' starring Richard Dreyfus as a man experiencing a sort of psychotic episode brought on by an encounter with an alien spacecraft. The film is a seminal work for Spielberg, boasting his signature wonder layered in paranoia and mystery. It is regarded as one of the best works of all time in the science fiction genre, showcasing some truly awe-inspiring special effects. In 1982, Spielberg somehow improved on his achievement with 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,' starring Henry Thomas as a boy who becomes friends with friendly alien creature. It is without a doubt one of the most emotionally impactful and important films of all time, and perhaps Spielberg's best work.

This week on Forgotten Cinema, Forgotten Summer continues with "War of the Worlds", Steven Spielberg's intense adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic. After covering "Flight of the Navigator", discussing "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" in their Lead Up series, releasing a Patreon-exclusive episode on "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", and reviewing "Disclosure Day", it only felt right for the Mikes to tackle another one of Spielberg's unforgettable alien films. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field love "War of the Worlds". From Spielberg's masterful direction to the relentless pacing and unforgettable set pieces, the film remains just as gripping today as it was upon release. Even after multiple viewings, Butler finds himself on the edge of his seat throughout much of the movie.Of course, the Mikes still have a few nitpicks. Cruise's portrayal of Ray as an almost unbelievably irresponsible father feels exaggerated during the first half of the film, though both agree it ultimately pays off as his character grows over the course of the story. Butler also revisits one of the classic criticisms of the story itself: how could an incredibly advanced alien civilization spend (at least!) centuries preparing to invade Earth without accounting for the planet's microscopic dangers? One of the film's highlights for both Mikes is Tim Robbins' unforgettable performance, which leads to one of the movie's most tense and memorable sequences. They also discuss the controversial ending that has divided audiences for years. While both are ultimately satisfied with it, Butler understands why some viewers struggle with the family's reunion. However, the Mikes point out that both the ending and the aliens' ultimate fate come directly from H.G. Wells' original novel.Thrilling, suspenseful, and packed with unforgettable moments, "War of the Worlds" remains one of Spielberg's finest modern blockbusters and a standout entry in the alien invasion genre. What do you think of "War of the Worlds"? Let us know in the comments below!

Doug Trumbull spent fifty years trying to convince Hollywood that the way movies are projected is fundamentally broken, and most of the industry never listened. The visual effects supervisor behind 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blade Runner, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and the director of Silent Running and Brainstorm, Trumbull passed away in 2022. This conversation originally aired in July 2020, before a lot of you were listening, and it's one of the fullest records of him explaining his life's obsession in his own words. We're pulling it back out of the archives because it deserves a wider audience than it got the first time around. Chris and Doug cover the whole arc: getting hired at Graphic Films off a satellite painting, cold calling Stanley Kubrick's secret phone number to get on 2001, the accidental discovery of double stars that led him toward persistence of vision research, and the Showscan process he patented at Paramount. They also get into Trumbull's MAGI process, 4K stereo at 120 frames per second, representing 40 times the data of a traditional HD video, and Chris's own experience helping produce a piece of content rendered through it as a proof of concept. Trumbull gives his blunt account of Ang Lee allegedly misusing his patented process on Gemini Man. This is a conversation about a man who understood something about how movies work that almost nobody in the industry, including some of its biggest directors, ever fully grasped. What changed? This episode traces the modern UAP timeline and its ties to national security—from the 2004 Tic Tac encounter and the Gimbal/GoFast videos to the Plant 42 drone incursions, the New Jersey drone flap, and the Western U.S. orb investigation. We also examine the emergence of new national security initiatives, including Avi Loeb's UAP Advisory Council, a newly discovered guarded subterranean property near a sensitive Western site, and a newly obtained clip that could be related to the disappearance of retired Maj. Gen. Neil McCasland. Are these isolated events—or part of a frightening shift in the government's approach to UAP and national security?Subscribe (free) to ATU on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@allthingsunexplained _______________________Hosted by Dr. Tim Mounce—best-selling author, Audible narrator, professor, and coffee addict. Drawing on decades of research and his own experiences inside esoteric organizations, he investigates the historical forces he believes continue to shape global politics, religion, and the modern disclosure movement. His latest book, The Vatican's Top Secret Alien Agenda, traces the origins of modern UFO disclosure through the Vatican's role in extraterrestrial encounters, Jesuit astronomy, hidden archives, and Italy's alleged 1933 UFO crash. What if the modern UFO disclosure movement didn't begin with Roswell at all? Faust and Leo argue that today's debates over extraterrestrials, the Vatican, and non-human intelligence can only be understood by looking much further back — through the Book of Enoch, the theological changes of Vatican II, and the institutions that have shaped public understanding for generations. As the conversation expands from alleged reverse engineering to the CIA's Legacy Program and the enduring aliens-versus-demons debate, it asks whether disclosure is revealing something new — or reviving a story that never truly disappeared. In this episode:• The 1933 Magenta Crash: Was Roswell really the beginning?• Disclosure Day: Why Leo believes Hollywood may be prepping us for what's coming next.• The Book of Enoch: The ancient text that changed entire aliens-versus-demons debate.• The SOL Foundation: Is the world's leading UAP think tank managing disclosure?• Vatican II: The forgotten theological shift—how the Church views extraterrestrials.• Jesuit Astronomers: Why would one of the world's oldest religious orders be watching the skies?• Remote Viewing & Stargate: What the CIA hoped to learn from psychic contact with non-human intelligence.• Marconi's Death Ray: The bizarre World War II technology story most people have never heard.• Anunnaki & Nephilim: Are the oldest stories in human history describing the same phenomenon?• Brother Extraterrestrial: Why one Vatican phrase could redefine the entire disclosure narrative. If the story of UFO disclosure really began long before Roswell, the biggest secret may not be what we're discovering today — but what we've been taught to forget.00:00:00 Leo Zagami's New Book The Vatican's Top Secret Alien Agenda00:00:42 Spielberg's "Disclosure Day" Screenplay & Hollywood Gatekeepers00:01:54 Mussolini's UFO Crash: Hidden 1933 Italian Evidence00:03:41 David Grusch Exposed: Whistleblower or Authorized Agent?00:08:15 Vatican Secrets on Extraterrestrial Life00:13:31 The Magenta UFO Crash & The Real Birth of Reverse Engineering=00:19:20 Inside Cabinet RS 33: Italy's Top Secret Fascist UFO Team00:22:51 The Marconi Death Ray & Secret Pope War Interventions00:31:48 Pope Pius XII's Close Encounter in the Vatican Gardens00:35:45 53 Miles of Vatican Secret Archives00:38:01 The Vatican Faculty of Paranormal: Training Priests for Aliens00:40:20 Pope John XXIII's Secret 1961 Alien Encounter at Castel Gandolfo00:45:31 Inside The Sol Foundation: The CIA's New Disclosure Playbook00:54:29 Zecharia Sitchin's Hidden Collaboration with the Vatican00:56:03 Forbidden Book of Enoch: Why the Vatican Censors Malevolent Entities01:08:19 Jack Parsons, L. Welcome to Day 2894 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2894 – “The Ultimate Close Encounter” based on Luke 9:28-36 Putnam Church Message – 05/31/2026 The Good News According to Luke: “The Ultimate Close Encounter.” Last week's message was “A Shocking Agenda,” in which we learned to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Jesus, which is not the way to lose our life. According to Jesus, that is the only way to truly find it. Today, we continue with our twenty-sixth message from Luke's narrative of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Today's message is: “The Ultimate Close Encounter.” Our core passage today is Luke 9:28--36, on page 1609 of your pew Bibles. The Transfiguration 28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a] which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving>Jesus, / Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) 34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. Opening Prayer Father, we come before You today with grateful hearts. We confess that we often see only what is right in front of us — our problems, our pain, our schedules, our fears, our disappointments. But Your Word reminds us that there is more than what we can see with our eyes. There is glory beyond suffering, resurrection beyond death, and a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. Lord Jesus, as we look today at Your transfiguration, open our hearts to see You more clearly. Strengthen our faith. Quiet our fears. Teach us to listen to You. Help us follow You not only when the road is easy, but also when the road leads through sacrifice and suffering. May we leave this place with renewed confidence that Your will, Your way, all the way, is always best. Amen. Introduction: Our Hunger for Something More We live in an interesting age. I think we live in the most exciting age ever. That is why I would love to live another 70 years. We are at the threshold of major breakthroughs in all areas of life. Not everyone agrees with me. On one hand, skepticism is loud. Many people claim that nothing exists beyond what can be measured, tested, touched, or explained by science. They say the material universe is all there is. And yet, at the very same time, interest in the supernatural continues to grow. People watch shows about UFO sightings. They read books about near-death experiences. They watch movies about unseen worlds, spiritual forces, mysterious signs, angels, ghosts, and life beyond death. Even people who say they do not believe in God often feel that there must be something more. Why? Because deep inside the human soul is a longing to know that we are not alone. We want to know that our lives matter. We want to know that suffering is not meaningless. We want to know that death is not the end. We want to know that beyond the visible world lies a greater reality. That longing is not new. It goes back as far as humanity itself. Every culture in every age has looked beyond itself, searching the heavens for someone or something greater. In today's passage, three disciples receive what we might call the ultimate close encounter. Peter, John, and James are allowed to see behind the curtain. For a brief moment, the veil between earth and heaven is pulled back. They see Jesus in glory. They see Moses and Elijah alive. They hear the voice of God the Father. And they learn something they desperately needed to know. In the previous message, “A Shocking Agenda,” Jesus told His disciples that He must suffer, be rejected, be killed, and be raised on the third day. Then He said that anyone who wants to follow Him must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Him. / That was not what they expected. They expected the Messiah to march into Jerusalem, overthrow Rome, and restore Israel's glory. Instead, Jesus spoke of suffering, rejection, death, and surrender. So now, about eight days later, Jesus takes three of them up a mountain to pray. There, He gives them a glimpse of the glory on the other side of the cross. The message is clear: The road of Jesus may pass through suffering, but it ends in glory. Let's look at four truths that will explain this in our bulletin insert. Main Point 1: Jesus Reveals His Glory in the Place of Prayer Luke tells us that about eight days after Jesus said these things, He took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. That detail matters. Luke has repeatedly shown us that Jesus prayed at key moments. He prayed at His baptism. He withdrew often to lonely places to pray. He prayed before choosing the Twelve. He will pray in Gethsemane before the cross. Here again, Jesus goes up the mountain to pray. In Scripture, mountains often become places of divine encounter. Moses met God on Mount Sinai. Elijah heard the gentle whisper of God on Mount Horeb. Later, Jesus would teach on mountains, pray on mountains, and eventually be crucified near Jerusalem on a hill called Golgotha. So, when Luke tells us Jesus goes up a mountain to pray, we should lean in. Something important is about to happen. / As Jesus is praying, His appearance changes. Matthew says His face shines like the sun. Mark says His clothing becomes dazzling white, whiter than anyone on earth could bleach it. Luke says the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white. This is not stage lighting. / This is not imagination. / This is not the sun hitting His robe at just the right angle. / The glory that had always belonged to Jesus begins to shine through His humanity. For most of His earthly life, the glory of the eternal Son of God was veiled. People saw a real man from Nazareth. They saw Him tired. Hungry. Weeping. Sleeping in a boat. Walking dusty roads. Sitting at tables. Touching lepers. Holding children. Teaching crowds. / But on the mountain, for a few moments, the veil is pulled back. The disciples see that the One they follow is not merely a teacher. Not merely a prophet. Not merely a miracle worker. Not merely a wise rabbi. / He is the glorious Son of God. Object Lesson: The Covered Lamp Imagine a lamp covered with a thick cloth. The lamp is shining, but the cloth hides most of the light. You may see a little glow around the edges, but not the full brightness. / Now remove the covering. / The light floods the room. That is a simple picture of what happens on the mountain. Jesus does not become glorious for the first time. His glory is revealed. John later writes that the Word became flesh and lived among us, and “we have seen his glory.” Peter later writes that he was an eyewitness of Christ's majesty. / This moment stayed with them. Ancient Context For Jewish disciples, shining glory would immediately connect with the presence of God. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai after speaking with God, his face shone so brightly that the people were afraid to come near him. / But Moses reflected glory. / Jesus reveals glory. Moses came down from the mountain with God's law. Jesus stands on the mountain as God's Son. / That distinction matters. Jesus is greater than Moses. Greater than Elijah. Greater than every prophet,...
Disclosure Day is Steven Spielberg's first alien movie in over two decades, and he's calling it the conclusion to a spiritual trilogy that started with Close Encounters and E.T. That's a big swing. We went to see if he pulled it off.Josh, Garrett, and David caught the film together at Circle Cinema in Tulsa — packed house, no assigned seats, the whole thing — and then recorded this. They talk about why the final act works harder than the first two, Emily Blunt's shot at awards season, what the film gets wrong about how the internet works (and why that doesn't matter), and whether Spielberg is actually using aliens to say something about loneliness, faith, and a world that stopped listening to itself.Ratings land at 3.5, 4, and 4.5 stars — which means someone's wrong. He is a published author, musician, artist, and a real-life Knight Templar whose groundbreaking work spans remote viewing, CE-5 contact protocols, Bigfoot and Dogman research, and profound personal encounters with the unknown. In this episode, we open the third eye and dive deep into the hidden realms of human consciousness. Bryan illuminates the art and science of remote viewing, revealing how it allows us to access information beyond space and time. He explains why certain dreams feel extraordinarily vivid and “more real than real”—because, in many cases, they are. Sleep, he shares, is far more than rest; it is a sacred process for receiving profound downloads from higher dimensions and collective intelligence. We explore Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind (CE-5), where intentional meditation, collective consciousness, and focused protocols summon genuine UFO contact.Bryan recounts one of his most astonishing experiences: during a CE-5 event, he remotely viewed—or momentarily embodied—a Gray alien perspective, looking down at Earth from a craft and actively guiding it toward his own location and the witnesses below. This extraordinary account blurs the lines between observer and participant in ways that challenge everything we think we know about reality. The conversation expands to the diverse tapestry of nonhuman intelligences: various alien entities, their motivations, and the timeless question—What do they want, and why are they here? We also venture into the shadowy world of cryptids, shadow figures, and the chilling Black-Eyed Children. Bryan discusses how these phenomena may feed on human fear and emotion, and we examine intriguing potential connections, such as reports linked to college campuses.Prepare for riveting stories, paradigm-shifting insights, and a thrilling exploration of the interconnected web of UFOs, cryptids, consciousness, and the paranormal. Co-hosts Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman kick off the weekend edition of the podcast with a look at shocking election results and the intersection of entertainment and modern politics. The discussion covers progressive primary surges, intense establishment pushback, and a bizarre new theory regarding the death of nu metal. The New York Shift: Leftist candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secure surprising victories in the New York primaries, including Brad Lander unseating incumbent Dan Goldman. Nick and Jared break down the significance of these primary wins and how a promise to address material conditions is changing the progressive landscape. Establishment Meltdown: The primary results trigger a wave of panic and overreaction from both the right wing and centrist Democrats like Hakeem Jeffries and Jamie Harrison. The discussion outlines an impending stress test for the future principles of the Democratic Party. Trump's Legislative Hostage Situation: Attention turns to the Trump administration as the president blocks a bipartisan housing bill. Jared details how corporate carve-outs allowed the bill to pass, while Trump holds it hostage in a bid to force an end to the filibuster for an anti-voting law. Reflecting Pool Retaliation: Meanwhile, security cracks down at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Surveillance and out-of-state law enforcement are being deployed to manufacture "Antifa culprits" for the peeling paint and algae caused by the administration's own rush job. Tucker's Tweener Turn: Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson makes the rounds claiming he can no longer support the Republican Party. Jared analyzes this shift as a calculated, mercenary move to position himself for a future political comeback. The Woodstock '99 Nu Metal Conspiracy: A viral right-wing theory claims that the elites intentionally killed off nu metal and bands like Limp Bizkit to prevent an angry white male revolution. Nick and Jared debunk this framing, demonstrating how the death of rock was actually driven by corporate monopolies and streaming shifts rather than a cultural Marxist plot. Weekend Reviews & Brain Rot: To wrap up, Nick gives a scathing review of Steven Spielberg's overlong new film Disclosure Day, prompting a trip down memory lane comparing it to Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Arrival. Plus, Jared shares his ongoing psychological torment over a legendary Black Eyed Peas earworm.
Welcome back to Not A Bomb! — the podcast where we resurrect cinema's most infamous box office disasters and ask the burning question: is it a bomb? This week, the guys march into the chaos of Steven Spielberg's 1979 war comedy 1941. Fresh off the unprecedented successes of Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Spielberg was handed the ultimate Hollywood blank check to make whatever he wanted. The result was an enormous, effects-driven comedy about panic erupting across Southern California in the days following Pearl Harbor. While 1941 wasn't a full-blown box office bomb, it fell well short of the massive expectations surrounding Spielberg's first comedy, becoming one of the earliest examples of how even Hollywood's hottest director wasn't immune to a stumble. But was the film unfairly judged, or is 1941 simply too loud, too chaotic, and too overstuffed for its own good? Troy and Brad break down the film's incredible cast, jaw-dropping practical effects, and the fascinating production that saw Spielberg pushing his filmmaking ambitions to new heights. The hosts also discuss how the film's reputation has evolved over the decades, why it has developed a passionate cult following, and how its perceived failure may have helped shape Spielberg's remarkable run of classics that followed.Sound the air raid sirens, keep an eye on the Ferris wheel, and join Not A Bomb as they revisit one of Hollywood's most fascinating near-misses, proving that sometimes even a box office disappointment can become an unforgettable piece of blockbuster history.Want to help support the show? Episode 441 - Spielin' The Tea: Director's Spotlight On Steven Spielberg We remember our first Close Encounter. It was late one summer night. We were staring up at the sky, then suddenly, bright lights. Brilliant flashes, accompanied by a cacophony of sweet, high-pitched sound. Then... sudden darkness, and feeling of being lifted, and swept away. When we finally came to, we were left with so many questions. What just happened? How long were we gone? Were we really just abducted by aliens? And of all places to leave us when they finally brought us back, why would they choose the drunk tank in the county jail. We may never know the answers. This week we try to solve the mystery, by examining two films that might just hold some clues. Join us. Cheers!!! When “Jaws” hit theatres in 1975, no one—neither the studio executives involved nor the film's twenty-six-year-old director, Steven Spielberg—was betting on its success. But it dominated at the box office and promptly revolutionized the way movies were promoted, distributed, and merchandised. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz trace how Spielberg inaugurated a new phenomenon in Hollywood: the blockbuster. He would tap his own playbook again and again with such hits as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “E.T.,” and “Jurassic Park,” all of which drew impressive audiences and profits. The hosts talk through his filmography, culminating in his new release, “Disclosure Day,” which both replicates and iterates on themes and techniques found in his earlier work. Though other directors may share his capacity for spectacle and action-packed set pieces, much of his appeal lies in his profound earnestness. “What Spielberg is so good at is bringing the human to the fore in these extreme, sci-fi circumstances,” Schwartz says. “And that's what makes a great blockbuster.” New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. Join host David Remnick as he discusses the latest in politics, news, and current events in conversation with political leaders, newsmakers, innovators, New Yorker staff writers, authors, actors, and musicians. Disclosure Day is not Steven Spielberg’s first film about the confirmation of alien life, nor is it the first such Spielberg film we’ve discussed on this podcast — that would be Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which we covered a decade ago. But Spielberg’s latest is specifically concerned with whether humanity possesses the empathy to process such a revelation, a question that led us directly to his 1982 classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, about the empathetic link between a 10-year-old boy and an orphaned alien that crash-lands in the forest outside his suburban home. So this week we’re revisiting E.T. to consider how Spielberg, with a crucial assist from Melissa Mathison’s screenplay, navigates the sentimentality of a story that’s all about feelings. Then in Feedback, our recent episode on Babe: Pig in the City prompted a listener to share their own recommendation for an unusually dark kids’ movie. (#529) Please share your thoughts about E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Disclosure Day, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. by UFO History Buff & Author, Charles Lear Ted Bloecher, who passed away not too long ago at the age of 94, was a researcher/investigator who started out in the days of flying saucers as a founding member of Civilian Saucer Intelligence of New York and was active until the mid-1980s. He was an early researcher of humanoid reports starting in 1955, just after the 1954 French humanoid wave and the 1955 Kelly-Hopkinsville incident, and was the author of numerous publications on the subject. Tucked away in the United Kingdom file of the downloads section of the Archives for the Unexplained website is a report he wrote titled Close Encounters of the Third Kind that was published in 1977 by the British UFO Research Association. According to the introduction, the paper was prepared for a talk he gave at the BUFORA National UFO Conference at the Centre Hotel in Birmingham, England, in November 1976. The subtitle describes the paper as “The preliminary presentation of extensive study into UFO cases involving the reported sightings of humanoids and other alien beings.” In this blog, we'll look at some of the highlights. In this edition of Somewhere in the Skies Classics, we revisit our fascinating conversation with Paul Hynek, son of legendary astronomer and UFO researcher Dr. J. Allen Hynek. As the UAP conversation continues to expand in 2026 through congressional hearings, military testimony, and renewed scientific inquiry, Hynek's work remains more relevant than ever. Known for his work on Project Blue Book, creating the Close Encounters classification system, and consulting with Steven Spielberg on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, J. Allen Hynek helped bring UFOs into both the scientific and cultural mainstream. Paul offers a rare, personal look at his father's investigations, his evolving views on the phenomenon, the real stories behind Project Blue Book, and why Hynek's commitment to evidence-based inquiry continues to influence today's UAP debate. Spoilers for Disclosure Day. Jason and Rachel review Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg's new alien movie starring Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Wyatt Russell. There are things to like here: Emily Blunt is great, Colman Domingo remains a human weighted blanket, and a few sequences feel like vintage Spielberg. But the movie's big alien reveal, TV station climax, confusing character logic, and “world peace / just listen” ending left us deeply frustrated. We talk Close Encounters comparisons, little green men, thumb drives, World War III, invisible fire trucks, AI-era skepticism, David Koepp, Spielberg nostalgia, and why Disclosure Day ends up as a disappointed thumbs down. Almost 50 years ago, Steven Spielberg directed “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” the story of an average man who discovers that humanity may not be alone in the universe. Over the decades, Spielberg has directed several movies about what would happen if humanity made contact with aliens. Would the aliens be kind like the title character in “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial”? Would they be cruel like the murderous aliens of “War of the Worlds”? And regardless of what the aliens were like, would we humans be ready to receive them? Spielberg returns to the question of whether we're alone in the universe, and what it might mean if we're not, with his new film “Disclosure Day.” Today, he sits down with Rachel Abrams, a host of “The Daily,” to talk about the film, and about what he has learned over five decades of making movies about aliens. On Today's Episode Steven Spielberg, director of “Disclosure Day.” Background Reading ‘Disclosure Day' Review: Spielberg Plays His Greatest Cosmic Hits What Steven Spielberg Taught Me About Fear, Catharsis, and Being Human Photo credit: Paolo Pellegrin/Magnum, for The New York Times Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
