My guest for this episode is paranormal investigator, researcher and writer Kate Ray. In addition to scientific rigour, Kate's approach to investigating hauntings is influenced by appreciating how these sorts of happenings were understood and described in pre-industrial societies and preserved in the local folklore. A good example of this is how what might be described as poltergeist activity in the present day could in the past have been considered the actions of a displeased house spirit, or fairy.    Kate has written extensively on a range of Fortean subjects, including two books inspired by the Wollaton Gnomes case and regular articles appearing in Haunted magazine. In addition, she hosts a faery inspired podcast called Hare in the Hawthorn.  In the interview I talk with Kate about how her career in paranormal investigation began and has developed around the connection between hauntings and the presence of beings which might best be described as fairies. The conversation opens out into a wide-ranging discussion on the nature of paranormal phenomena and the role that experiencers have as part of that. I also talk with Kate about the Wollaton Gnomes case and we conclude with her relating a very unusual entity encounter she had whilst visiting an ancient earthwork known as Wayland's Smithy. by UFO History Buff & Author, Charles Lear In the January 12, 1982, New South Wales, Australia Pix-People, there is an article (page 11 of the pdf) by “Australia's leading authority on UFOs and psychic phenomena,” John Pinkney, headlined “UFO terror grips a NSW township.” Pinkney's weekly column for the publication is “The Pinkney Report–Investigating the Incredible.” It seems there was a flap in the town of Nowra, and one case in particular is reported to have been investigated by the Scientific Bureau of Investigation. SBI had its own publication at the time, and a report on the case was published in the Vol. 3, No. 6 SBI Report. SBI was based in Staten Island, NY, and one member readers might recognize was Peter Robbins, who is listed as art director for the magazine.According to Pinkney, “dozens of people” were “caught up in bizarre events” in Nowra, which is 150 km south of Sydney: railway men reported they saw lights hovering over abandoned mineshafts; a foal was found with its leg cut off “neatly from its shoulder; a “huge, brightly lit object” paced a bus with 40 passengers “for seven minutes, before vanishing up a shaft of light in the clouds;” a newspaper man saw a mass of what looked like meteorites fly up from the ground into the air in 1978; a 12-meter-diameter ring was found burned into a field after a farmer told police that “a weird thing had crashed on his property, starting a bushfire;” and two hunters shot at a two-meter-tall, human-like entity that vanished and left an overpowering odor that made one of the hunters sick for several hours.  Pinkney's main focus, however, is on a case involving not only some unusual trace evidence, but physical effects on the witness as well.According to Pinkney, Frank Burke, a pastrycook, was driving through the Kangaroo Valley heading home from work at around 10:30 p.m. when a “blazing light” engulfed the car. Burke said it lit up the area in a radius of around 25 feet and “was so intense I could have read the fine print of a newspaper or counted the ants at the roadside.” He was listening to music coming from a cassette player/recorder sitting on the seat next to him, and it stopped playing as soon as the light came down. Read more →

My guest for this episode is writer and researcher Paul A.T. Wilson, who joined me to talk about his ongoing involvement in developments relating to a paranormal encounter that happened on the Isle of Wight in the UK over fifty years ago – that of Sam the Sandown Clown. To describe the events of the initial encounter as unusual is somewhat of an understatement. In 1973, two young children were out playing near Sandown when they met the titular Sam – who was described as wearing a pointy hat, having triangular markings for eyes and a square nose on a pale face and arms and legs that seemed wooden. The children spent some time with Sam in a small hut and spoke with him, after which they left, and both he and his dwelling had disappeared. This encounter eventually featured in a journal of the British UFO Research Association in 1978 after which, the strange events of that day in 1973 faded somewhat, becoming a small part of paranormal history. That was until a few decades later, when Paul was put in contact with someone who claimed to be one of the children who encountered Sam and has been given the pseudonym ‘Fay'. Paul was allowed to meet with Fay and talk to her about her initial encounter with Sam in the process of which she revealed she had met him again on four other occasions. These developments have been part of a renaissance of interest in the Sandown Clown incident, which has seen the adoption of Sam by Sandown as something of a fortean mascot, and him becoming an important part of the islands recent folklore. The interview begins with Paul providing a brief summary of the initial incident, after which we talk about how his own interest in those events started, and how he came to meet with Fay. We discuss the memories she has of her first meeting with Sam, and then go into the subsequent encounters she had with him, exploring the themes they include which may offer some clues as to Sam's true nature. We end by talking about the recent upsurge of interest in the Sandown Clown case, what makes Sam an important part of the Isle of Wight's culture. This landmark new UFO research takes Close Encounter, CE, phenomenon to new dimensions, not only is Pascagoula considered the best documented CE, but it now may be the only one reported in a nuclear and military involved area. And it was also involved in bringing about today's disclosure. On October 11, 1973, shipyard employees, Calvin Parker and Charles Hickson went fishing in the Pascagoula River.What happened next changed the world. They reported that humanoid entities abducted them in what became international news. But because of the general lack of documentation such abduction reports are often considered low-life, hoax material and unrecognized even by ufologists. They were harshly harassed. However as our investigation continued, this one differed. It had so many witnesses to the object and events that now it is considered the best documented of any CE. But important questions dogged its credibility: ‘Why them?' and ‘Why there?'This new information can provide answers. They worked for an installation that was closely associated with and near one that made nuclear submarines, some armed with nuclear missiles. The CE occurred in this area. This sheds a new light on the events; UAP are reportedly interested in nuclear sites and accounts of UAP near our most secured areas receive respect and critical examination. This could be comparable to the activity over missile silos. It also included strange abductions; the world's largest UFO wave; an unidentified sound with many witnesses; prophecy and weird hypnosis results; a large US military reconnaissance; and mind control elements, such as people in trances behaving like machines.Additional reports of an Unidentified Submerged Object (USO), underwater activity, and trans-medium travel were well investigated also. Even sightings near nuclear facilities are considered dangerous, let alone abduction. UAP mental effects near nuclear sites are just as dangerous as physical ones; hence, CE phenomenon should now be recognized. Moreover, Pascagoula was instrumental in bringing about the Tic Tac events and today's disclosure. Thus Pascagoula is extraordinary but this is for a combination of solid reasons: the large number of credible witnesses, it is a nuclear and military sighting, there were mind-control effects, and it helped to bring about the most consequential UAP incident in modern history, the Tic Tac event.
