In this episode of Bourbon With Friends. The team is on Islay at Lagavulin Distillery. We started the day in the barrelhouse with distillery icon Ian McArthur getting 17 and 25 year Lagavulin straight from the barrel! After an amazing tour, we sit down with distillery manager Jordan Paisley. Founded on Islay's south [Kildalton] coast and situated between Ardbeg and Laphroaig, legal distilling was started at Lagavulin in 1816 by John Johnston. A second distillery shared the site which was first bought by the same family in 1825, before production was absorbed into Lagavulin in 1837.It came to wider public awareness in 1862 when blender John Logan Mackie bought the distillery. His nephew Peter J. Mackie made the first of many trips to Islay in 1878 to learn the secrets of distilling and eventually take over production of Lagavulin. Sir Peter Mackie, as he became, was one of the pre-eminent figures of late 19th century whisky. He created the White Horse blend in 1890, co-founded Craigellachie distillery and was noted as a great innovator.In 1908, irritated by the loss of the agency for Laphroaig, Mackie built a replica distillery at Lagavulin which he called Malt Mill. It ran until 1962 and though it was set up to produce the same character as Laphroaig – which is only two miles away – it never did. Neither did it make Lagavulin. A (fictitious) cask of Malt Mill played a central role in film director Ken Loach's comedy The Angel's Share.The distillery floor maltings shut in 1974. In this episode of Bourbon With Friends. The crew sits down with Chanda's friend Al Kaplon. You probably know Al best for his role as the tournament referee in the movie Dodgeball. Starring Ben Stiller & Vince Vaughn. Al Kaplon was born and raised in the West San Fernando Valley city of Woodland Hills, California. Before he graduated from Taft High School in 1975, he had already started his officiating career working after school and on weekends.In 1976 at the age of 19, Al won the award of “Umpire of the Year” from his local Umpire Association. The award came with a scholarship to the Bill Kinamon professional Umpire School- a five week intense program that is the first step in a career as a professional baseball umpire. Al graduated high enough to get placed in pro ball. He would later come back as an instructor at that Pro Umpire School for 5 years.After signing his first contract as an umpire in professional baseball in 1977, AL spent the next 10 years in the minor leagues with stints in the Lone Star League, Northwest League, California League, Texas League and five seasons in the Pacific Coast League.Al Kaplon's Major League Baseball experience included Umpiring in the American League and working as the Director of Umpire Development for MLB International until 1995.With Al's acting career already on the rise booking commercials and movie parts since his first role in the movie “Talent for the Game” in 1988. Al started his own production company “Official Communications” in 1989.Appearing in some 60 or so commercials and a number of TV series over a 15 year span Al's acting career reached new heights when he was cast and appeared in the 2004 hit comedy instant classic “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”. This is an episode you don't want to miss!In 1887, Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr built a new kind of distillery destination in Millville, Kentucky. Inspired by European architecture, the site featured a Castle, a classical Springhouse, and a Sunken Garden. What he built became the birthplace of bourbon tourism.Prohibition forced the closing of the distillery in 1920. Over the next century, the property changed owners and occupants several times, eventually falling into ruin.In 2012, Will Arvin came across photographs of the abandoned distillery. He couldn't stop thinking about its legacy and potential. He decided to visit the property to see for himself.At the distillery, Will found caved-in roofs, boarded-up windows and doors, and vegetation so overgrown he had to use a flashlight — in the middle of the day — to navigate. But, he felt an affinity for the property. It was then that he resolved to restore the historic bourbon icon.Wes Murry shared Will's love for adventure and restoration. The property sits on active limestone springs that were first charted by Lewis and Clark in 1804, more than fifty years before Ben Holladay purchased the land that would later become his legacy.Ben Holladay Bourbon is classified as a Real Missouri Bourbon under a 2019 law requiring that any whiskey labeled as Missouri bourbon must not only meet the federal standards for bourbon, but also be mashed, fermented, distilled, aged, and bottled in the state; aged in oak barrels manufactured in the state; and—beginning January 1, 2020—made with corn exclusively grown in the state. It is also Bottled-in-Bond, a rare and prestigious designation in the distilled spirits industry, signaling that the product is distilled, aged, and bottled in the same location and assuring a mark of authenticity.This six-year-old, Bottled-in-Bond, Real Missouri Bourbon is crafted with the same mash bill that was developed by Ben Holladay in 1856.
