Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode revisits the question of truth, lies and deception in Ambridge, asking whether the village is still a moral quagmire.“A Lying, Cheating, Chancer”: Truth and Deception in Ambridge - Ruth Heilbronn and Rosalind JanssenGeorge Grundy was recently branded “a lying, cheating chancer” by listeners, even compared to Boris Johnson. But research shows we all lie several times a day. Five years ago, the 2018 Academic Archers conference asked whether Ambridge was a moral quagmire. The answer was yes, with residents frequently “economical with the truth”.This paper updates that investigation. Drawing on Sisela Bok's philosophical study of lying and the history of ethical debates on truth, it distinguishes between socially beneficial lies that oil the wheels of community life and self-serving lies that erode trust.Ambridge provides ample examples: Henry lying to Helen about meeting Rob, Ardil's deception about Grey Gables' finances, Pip hiding Stella from Ruth, Helen passing off Pat's boeuf bourguignon as her own, or concealing her anorexia from Lee. Where is the line between lying, evasiveness, and omission? When does withholding truth protect others, and when does it damage relationships? The paper also considers how broader public life in 2023 reflects and refracts the moral climate in Ambridge.About the speakersDr Ruth Heilbronn is an academic whose research explores ethics, teacher education and philosophy in practice.Dr Rosalind Janssen is an independent scholar with interests in ethics and in how cultural narratives reflect moral decision-making.If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.
The incomparable Jayne Kennedy ("Plain Jayne: A Memoir") joins us for an intimate conversation about a career that defied expectations and left an indelible mark on both sports broadcasting and American culture. Raised in small-town Ohio and catapulted to national attention through beauty pageants and professional ambitions, Kennedy soon found herself in early 1970s Hollywood — landing a succession of parts on TV variety shows, commercials, and film. But it was her move to CBS's The NFL Today in 1978 that cemented her place in television history. For two groundbreaking seasons, Kennedy sat alongside Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder on what was then the most influential NFL pregame show in America. As one of the first women — and among the very first Black women — to co-anchor a national sports broadcast, she brought poise, charisma, and depth to a space long dominated by men. Kennedy reflects candidly on what it was like to navigate the high-pressure world of network television, from the excitement of breaking barriers to the behind-the-scenes tensions that eventually led to her controversial departure in 1980. In a conversation that spans both triumphs and challenges, Kennedy shares how her time on The NFL Today shaped her career, the lessons she carried into later endeavors, and why her story still resonates in today's conversations about representation in media. Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode looks at the connections between nature, gardening, and wellbeing, through research and the experiences of Ambridge residents.“If listening to the birds for five minutes makes you feel better, good for you”: Wellbeing, Gardens and Environmental Activity - Camilla Royle and Lily WhittleWhen Ambridge's local police officer Harrison took part in the Wildlife Trust's 30 Days Wild Challenge, he reflected a wider truth: many people turn to nature to cope with stress. Natural England reports that 90% of adults in England consider green and natural spaces to be good for mental health. But the relationship between gardening, environmental practice, and wellbeing is more complex.Drawing on interviews and surveys with gardeners, this paper explores how practices such as composting, water use and encouraging wildlife connect to wellbeing. Like Kirsty in The Archers, many gardeners find joy in sustainable approaches and in feeling they can do something in response to climate change. For others, the limits of gardening's impact can dampen the sense of control and reduce its mental health benefits.About the speakersDr Camilla Royle is a political ecologist and Teaching Fellow at Durham University. Her research explores how societies shape the environment and how environmental change in turn shapes human life.Lily Whittle is an undergraduate student at the London School of Economics, currently spending a year abroad in Social and Behavioural Sciences at IE University, Madrid. With a personal love of gardening, she is particularly interested in the links between gardening and mental health. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode examines the many ways animals shape life in Ambridge and what their stories reveal about both farming practice and human relationships.“It's a ferret ferris wheel!”: Depictions of Human–Animal Interactions and Animal Welfare in The Archers - Tamzin Furtado and Tamsin DurstonAnimals are central to Ambridge life, whether as livestock, wildlife or family pets. This paper explores how The Archers uses animals to convey messages about farming practice, ethics, personality and community.Examples range from Mia's veganism and the disruption of the Ambridge Hunt, to Lilian's unruly Ruby, Peggy's demanding Hilda Ogden, Pip's herbal lays, Freddie's abattoir stint and the Rewilding project. The paper also considers how real-world issues such as the 2021 pig slaughter crisis and equine obesity are reflected in the programme, alongside the grief of losing beloved animals like Stella's dog Weaver or Bartleby the horse.Through these depictions, the paper invites listeners to recognise the role of nonhuman animal actors in shaping the village's stories and our understanding of Ambridge residents.About the speakersDr Tamzin Furtado and Tamsin Durston - The Tams of The Am - both work in animal welfare science with a focus on the intersection of human and animal wellbeing and are equally devoted to life in Ambridge. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode takes us beyond Ambridge, exploring the imagined history and real-world potential of the Felpersham Canal. The Felpersham Canal: An Asset Beyond Ambridge - Paul RodgersFor almost a decade in the author's imagination, the Felpersham Canal has taken shape as a living part of Borsetshire's landscape. This paper traces its story from its origins in the 18th century, through its heyday up to the 1920s, its years of decline, and the plans for its restoration and reconnection to the national waterways network via the River Severn.Drawing on the history of British canals, the presentation highlights the economic, social and environmental benefits of waterways, their transformative impact on communities, and what this could mean for Ambridge and its neighbours. Endorsements from waterways ambassadors including Sir David Suchet, Griff Rhys Jones, John Bishop, Sir Tim Smit, and Timothy Spall enrich the case for restoration.Following the conference, the Felpersham Canal Trust will launch as a Community Interest Company, creating a central hub for knowledge and resources to support over 50 restoration projects across the UK. It may even prove useful to The Archers scriptwriters.About the speakerPaul Rodgers is a passionate advocate for the UK's navigable canals and waterways. He has appeared on BBC Radio and Countryfile, and worked with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Waterways to bring the sector's challenges to government attention. A former National Chair of the Inland Waterways Association, he hosted regular Waterways Webinars during the Covid period and leads hands-on restoration projects for volunteers of all ages. Beyond his volunteering, Paul is an entrepreneur, innovator, and community builder in the financial sector. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee - buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.
