Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. Please note: the sound quality on this recording is not as clear as usual. We apologise for this and thank you for your understanding. This episode considers what further education might mean for Emma Grundy and how her story reflects wider trends in UK higher education.Educating Emma? - Nicola MaxfieldThe Archers has often reflected national patterns in access to higher education. Some characters leave for university at 18, such as Alice and Ben (with mixed results), while others, like Brenda and Roy Tucker, return to study later in life.Could Emma Grundy follow a similar path? After disappointing GCSEs and years in low-paid work, Emma once dreamed of studying catering. Today, widening participation schemes encourage mature students like her, with 23% of UK students now over 30. If Emma were to enrol at Felpersham University, it could transform her prospects.Drawing on research linking higher education to self-esteem and opportunity, this paper asks whether Emma might find her own Educating Rita moment, or quietly complete a part-time degree while raising her family. Either way, education could be life-changing for Emma.About the speakerNicola Maxfield is a Study Skills Advisor at University Centre Petroc in North Devon, where she supports students to develop confidence and fulfil their potential. She lives in Devon and is currently pursuing a Masters degree. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. Please note: the sound quality on this recording is not as clear as usual. We apologise for this and thank you for your understanding. This episode explores how privilege endures across generations in Ambridge and what that means for social mobility. The Glass Floor in Ambridge: How Does Privilege Endure? - Claire AstburyAmerican sociologist Heather Johnson coined the concept of “the glass floor”: the behaviours by which advantaged families ensure their children maintain high status regardless of ability. Abigail McKnight extended this analysis in Britain in a 2015 Social Mobility Commission study, highlighting how opportunity-hoarding blocks mobility. This paper applies the concept to Ambridge, tracking families in higher social grades (AB and C1) and mapping the position of their children and grandchildren over time. It considers how affluent families may hoard opportunities, limiting the prospects of less privileged residents.Case studies highlight the complexities: Freddie Pargeter, despite a poor academic record, prison sentence, and unstable work history, has avoided poverty and gained a management trainee scheme through family connections. Meanwhile Rex Fairbrother, from a privileged background, is juggling multiple low-paid jobs, living on a boat, and facing similar challenges to Ed and Emma Grundy. The paper raises key questions about how privilege, opportunity, and disadvantage intersect in Ambridge.About the speakerClaire Astbury is a long-standing Academic Archers contributor with a particular interest in housing, social mobility and inequality, bringing professional expertise and academic insight to her work on Ambridge. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

Send us a textWhat a ride, Goofball Army — we've got to talk about this 34-24 loss at home as the New York Giants fall to 2-7 after a disappointing performance against the San Francisco 49ers. From a strong start to a brutal collapse, tonight's breakdown covers what went right, what went horribly wrong, and what's coming next.Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart threw two touchdowns and ran for another, showing flashes of hope that fans have been waiting for. Unfortunately, the defense gave up huge runs, the offensive line completely fell apart under pressure, and special teams missed key opportunities. The Giants opened with an impressive drive but managed just 39 total yards on their final six possessions before halftime. The 49ers simply looked more prepared, more physical, and more consistent in every phase. The big question now is what the Giants need to change in the final stretch of the season. Are the coaching decisions holding this team back, or is the roster itself running out of gas? In this episode, Drew and Rob dig into the few bright spots, the bigger problems with the offensive rhythm, the defensive breakdowns, and what has to shift immediately if this team wants to regain momentum. If you're part of the Goofball Army, you already know this show pulls no punches and gives it to you straight — stats, emotion, and a healthy dose of sarcasm where it's earned. Thanks for watching and for your support — you made it to the end, so you must be part of the Goofball Army!Official Merch — grab your Goofball Army gear and support the show: https://2giantgoofballs-shop.fourthwall.com/Buy Us a Coffee — fuel the next episode and help keep the mics hot: https://buymeacoffee.com/2giantgoofballsSubscribe on YouTube — never miss a live or post-game recap: https://www.youtube.com/@2giantgoofballs?sub_confirmation=1Join the Channel — unlock exclusive content and behind-the-scenes banter: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-tiLjkehiawtN-v6gMFViA/joinFollow on Facebook — daily memes, clips, and live updates: https://www.facebook.com/2giantgoofballsFollow on X (Twitter) — instant reactions and breaking Giants news: https://x.com/2giantgoofballsListen to the Podcast — catch every episode on the go: https://2giantgoofballs.buzzsprout.com/#Giants #GoofballArmy #49ers #NFLWeek9 #GiantsPostGameSupport the show

Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. Please note: the sound quality on this recording is not as clear as usual. We apologise for this and thank you for your understanding. This episode explores fandom theory, participatory culture, and how these ideas came alive at the Academic Archers Dum Tee Dum Mash Up weekend in 2023.We the Fandom: Applying Fandom Theory to the Academic Archers Dum Tee Dum Mash Up Weekend 2023 - Caroline BirksHenry Jenkins's theory of participatory culture highlights how digital technologies enable audiences to share information, create, and circulate fan works. At the 2023 Birmingham Mash Up weekend, Caroline saw this in action.Examples include fan appropriation through fanfiction, with eroticised predictions of Chelsea and Freddie, moral realignments like Alan's disapproval of the church window, refocalisations centring minor characters and even trees, and recontextualisations such as panels on men's mental health. Fan creativity also extended to craft, with works made for and during the event. The weekend also illustrated Jenkins's concept of audience–producer convergence. Attendees engaged with producers and podcasters, from DumTeeDum's singalong to One Stiletto in the Grave, as well as presentations revealing the soundscape of The Archers. Social media, especially the Sunday Tweetalong, showcased how fans circulate and distribute their work. Finally, Caroline considers Jenkins's optimism that fandom and digital technology can effect wider social change. The joy of shared fandom, and the charitable fundraising at these gatherings, demonstrates the power of fan communities to create connection and do good.About the speakerCaroline Birks is a writer and researcher with a focus on fandom culture. She has a chapter in Fandom Culture and The Archers and has long explored how communities of fans create meaning and connection through shared storytelling. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.
Trump's Tariff Policy Gains Victory in Trade Truce with China. Alan Tonelson assesses the US-China trade truce, viewing it as a major victory for President Trump's tariff policies. China agreed to delay rare earth export controls and buy US farm goods. This move is seen as desperate by Xi Jinping, whose economy is undermined by US technology curbs. China's predatory practices defined the relationship until Trump decided to use American leverage. 1919 MAO

Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode explores how we imagine Ambridge – or don't – depending on the way our minds work. The Ambridge in My Mind's Eye - Carolyn CooperNot all Archers listeners experience the drama in the same way. Around 3% of the population are aphantasic, meaning they lack a visual imagination. For some, images are fleeting or vague; for others, there is only darkness. This paper describes what it is like to follow life in Ambridge without mental pictures of characters, houses or landscapes. Carolyn explains how she replaces imagery with a running internal commentary and why mismatches between actors and characters do not bother her.The presentation also invites listeners to reflect on their own imagination, to consider how their inner visual world shapes their enjoyment of The Archers, and to ask: what difference does imagery really make?About the speakerCarolyn Cooper is an Archers fan who brings her personal perspective as an aphantasic to questions of imagination, listening and enjoyment of the programme. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode brings together three papers exploring money, hospitality and public health in Ambridge.Looking After the Penny Hassets So the Pounds Look After Themselves - Katherine Jennings and Vikki Barry BrownMoney is everywhere in Ambridge, but rarely spoken of openly. This paper explores how financial norms, taboos and silences mirror English cultural attitudes. From inherited wealth to debt, employment to entrepreneurship, money shapes status and relationships. Themes of shame, aspiration and social standing reveal how the programme presents financial lives to its audience.About the speakersVikki Barry Brown leads qualitative research at behavioural science consultancy CogCo and is completing her PhD in Human Geography at Queen Mary University of London.Katherine Jennings is Director of the Talking Taboos Foundation and a social researcher with Common Collective, focusing on taboo issues and behaviour change.Grey Gables – Did It Need to Close During Renovation? - Katharine HoskynHotels often renovate or rebrand while remaining open, with mixed results. This paper takes a light-hearted, autoethnographic look at whether Grey Gables really needed to close.Drawing on a recent stay in a hotel under renovation, and on hospitality and tourism literature, it considers alternative options that could have kept Grey Gables trading. The presentation explores the impact of closure, how other hotels have managed change, and what this iconic Ambridge business might have done differently.About the speakerKatharine Hoskyn is based in New Zealand and manages a research project in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Science at Auckland University of Technology. With a background in social science and business, her research focuses on community issues. She has listened to The Archers since 1968 and is part of the Archers Cats online community.Make Every Contact/Episode Count - Jane LothianPublic health guidance urges professionals to “make every contact count”. In Ambridge, every episode offers an opportunity for health messaging. This paper analyses how immunisation and screening could feature more prominently in storylines.Using demographic and medical knowledge of Ambridge residents, the paper matches national screening and immunisation schedules to the characters. It considers whether services are accessed appropriately, explores ethical questions, and highlights the challenges faced by rural communities in accessing public health interventions.About the speakerDr Jane Lothian has over 20 years' experience in commissioning and managing population health services in Northeast England. With a background in medicine, public health, and law, she has worked across NHS and pharmaceutical sectors. An Archers listener for 44 years, she is particularly interested in the programme's role in health education. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

The incomparable Jayne Kennedy ("Plain Jayne: A Memoir") joins us for an intimate conversation about a career that defied expectations and left an indelible mark on both sports broadcasting and American culture. Raised in small-town Ohio and catapulted to national attention through beauty pageants and professional ambitions, Kennedy soon found herself in early 1970s Hollywood — landing a succession of parts on TV variety shows, commercials, and film. But it was her move to CBS's The NFL Today in 1978 that cemented her place in television history. For two groundbreaking seasons, Kennedy sat alongside Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder on what was then the most influential NFL pregame show in America. As one of the first women — and among the very first Black women — to co-anchor a national sports broadcast, she brought poise, charisma, and depth to a space long dominated by men. Kennedy reflects candidly on what it was like to navigate the high-pressure world of network television, from the excitement of breaking barriers to the behind-the-scenes tensions that eventually led to her controversial departure in 1980. In a conversation that spans both triumphs and challenges, Kennedy shares how her time on The NFL Today shaped her career, the lessons she carried into later endeavors, and why her story still resonates in today's conversations about representation in media.
