Simon's been a mate since the late 1990s, when he created CLASS (standing for Cocktail Liqueur And Speciality Spirit) magazine, the print forerunner of Difford's Guide and, in a pre-Internet world, just about the only way to learn about the revolution in cocktails that began sweeping London in the mid-1990s, which we both agree dates to the opening of the Atlantic Bar & Grill there in 1994. Without CLASS and Diffordsguide, the latter of which later moved online and is bigger and better now than ever, the only way to learn about the dawning of the Second Cocktail Golden Age was to hop on a plane to London, so it's no exaggeration to say that Simon and his publications were (and are) critical in helping grow this Second Cocktail Golden Age, first outside London, and then across the world. Before the Internet spawned the Drinkboy messageboard, then morphed into social media and YouTube, you learned about cocktails and this new bar culture from Simon's publications. A serial entrepreneur, Simon's a hilarious person to have a drink with and we caught up over breakfast during Tales of the Cocktail to tape this one, chatting about selling liquor minis from the back of a van, the culinary art of punch, getting a bit too obsessed with cocktails, tax-deductible cocktail bills, and of course the rather amazing Difford's Easy Jigger he's created. Upon lighting the inaugural candle at Arcade 160 Studios new location in Atlanta GA, I, Jim Bois, and the eclectic Jimmy embarked on a rock 'n' roll pilgrimage back to the grunge-laden era of the '90s. Together, we savor the sonic boom of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which tore through the fabric of the music scene, and pay homage to the tragically woven tapestry that is Kurt Cobain's legacy. We unwrap the rawness of "Bleach," and the decade changing songs of "Nevermind," reveling in the tracks that continue to resonate through the corridors of rock history. We look back at Hole and their album "Live Through This," released the week after Hole's frontwoman, Courtney Love's husband, Kurt, took his life. From the opening chords of "Violet" to "Doll Parts," and "Softer, Softest", it's a really good album that doesn't get the credit it deserves. The spotlight refuses to dim as it dances over the corners of our music library where The Hoodoo Gurus' "Stone Age Romeos" stands proud at its 40th anniversary, and the timeless jangles of The Beatles' guitars on their second album still beguile listeners. McCartney's unrestrained vocals on "Long Tall Sally" and the cowbell charm of "You Can't Do That" are just appetizers in our feast of musical milestones. We then shift gears to honor the craft of Difford and Tilbrook of Squeeze as we approach their golden jubilee. Whether it's the quirky allure of "Cool for Cats", The Psychedelic Furs evolving with "Mirror Moves", or the punk revolution signaled by The Offspring's "Smash," this episode is a testament to the enduring power of anthems that have become the soundtracks of our lives. Join us for a harmonious blend of reflection and revelation in a celebration that transcends generations.

A slightly different episode today.I wanted to shed a bit of light on someone who does a job most people don't see. As session musicians, we're often told a time to be somewhere, we arrive, and our equipment is already set up. Not to mention the stage and lights and whatnot. I thought it'd be fun to chat with a backline technician about what they do and what it's like to be on that side of a gig or tour.Diffy is a backline technician who specialises in drums and percussion. For the last twenty years he's been touring with artists like Liam Gallagher, Glass Animals, Jamiroquai and Tom Jones. We discussed his move from drummer to drum tech, balancing tours with being a dad, what exactly a backline tech does, and how touring can be a lonely but brilliant job. There was a weird issue with Diffy's airpods for a while, so please excuse the clicking noises. They do eventually stop, I promise!By the way, please check out the links at the bottom of the show notes. You can support the podcast, and also email me. I'm looking to do a Q&A episode soon, so send your questions to nwinsessionwith@gmail.com.I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Join us this week to explore the myths (and mythos) that surround the famed French spirit: absinthe. We're diving deep into the culture of art and alcoholism following the French Revolution. Few journalists have been able to go deep when it comes to the back history of the songwriting partnership and longevity of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook. In this episode, I spoke to Jim Drury, author of the 2004 book 'Squeeze: Song By Song.' In candid interviews with Chris & Glenn, Jim was able to get to the heart of their process, both as friends and partners in the realm of a collaborative, descriptive, and music-based biography. At that time, Squeeze was not in place functioning as a band. However, when presented with the prospect of delving into a rich and diverse project (even with an extremely tight deadline), Jim has supplied the Squeeze community with an insightful look into their songs, enriched through the unique dynamic lens known as Difford & Tilbrook. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This episode features Jane Ryan, a writer and content creator working in the world of drinks. She's someone with some valuable insight into how you might want to go about building a career making content about drinks and getting it seen across the social media platform world we live in today.Jane started out as a drinks journo; she studied journalism at university in the UK before landing a plum role at Difford's Guide, which quickly saw her traipsing through distilleries in Scotland and France. She's also worked both behind the bar and on the floor, and has been recognised for her writing at Tales of the Cocktail's Spirited Awards. After a stint in the consumer media world at Concrete Playground in Sydney, she launched Difford's Guide Australia in 2019, and in recent years has grown that brand here through her use of social media, creating content for both TikTok and Instagram, and reaping millions of views in the process.I've long been a fan of Jane's work, and in this chat she demystifies a little about what kind of content works on TikTok and Instagram, how she grew that audience, and she talks about how you might break into the drinks media world today.
Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Scott Immergut. Scott is the CEO of Ricochet.com and the Ricochet Audio Network. He is the long-time producer of the Ricochet Podcast and the GLoP Culture podcast with Jonah Goldberg, Rob Long, and John Podhoretz. He's also the Executive Producer of The Hoover Institution's Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson andGood Fellows, with Niall Ferguson, H. R. McMaster, and John Cochrane. Scott's Music Pick: SqueezeThey might do it down on Camber Sands and at Waikiki, but in the mainland U.S., Squeeze was mostly a rumor for much of the band's career. Highest charting album? #32. Just two Top 40 singles. Squeeze, unfortunately, was destined to join the long list of very British bands that never quite crossed over to the States. If you know Squeeze at all, it might be because of the placement of “Tempted” on the soundtrack for Reality Bites. Or, perhaps a roommate at college had the Singles 45's and Under collection on CD, as most roommates seemed to in the 1990s. But there's a heck of a lot more to the story. This is, of course, where Political Beats steps in to solve the problem. Because the truth is you won't find music any better than what Squeeze produced, particularly at their peak from 1978-1982. The highly literate lyrics of Chris Difford, filled with sharp storytelling and British allusions, paired perfectly with the beautiful, melodic, and sometimes quite complicated music written by Glenn Tilbrook. Tilbrook's soulful tenor took most of the leads (except, famously, on perhaps the band's best-known song, “Tempted”) while Difford's deep croaking voice contributed backing vocals. The duo were called the heirs to the Lennon/McCartney songwriting throne, though the comparison never really fit and actually harmed the band's output, as we discuss on the show. But they were something special, producing some of the finest pop songs of the era, like “Another Nail In My Heart,” “Pulling Mussels,” “Up the Junction,” and “Is It Love”.The band broke up in 1982, making way for a pretty awful Tilbrook/Difford duo album that was a naked reach for the charts. Squeeze reunited in 1985, fell apart in 1999, got back together in 2007 and remain a recording and touring entity to this day. Pick up almost any album from their collection and you're going to hear at least a handful of well-crafted, melodic, memorable tunes. If nothing else, you'll learn about a whole bunch of British slang, like “argybargy,” “up the junction,” “that's not cricket,” and “slap and tickle.” But we're pretty sure you're going to love this music, as well. It's not just an East Side Story, it's one everyone can enjoy on Political Beats.
Grappa: Not just for breakfast (you laugh)! This pomace brandy, like many spirits, has ancient roots. Grab your whisky sweater and meet me in front of the fire. How we've gone 9 seasons without sipping a dram together of one of my favorite spirits is beyond me. And it's beyond time. Very few songwriting duos have as much recognition power and songs that are hotwired into our own personal lives, as that of Lennon and McCartney. While there have been some epic songwriting duos, such as Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, Difford and Tilbrook, Gilbert and Sullivan, few of these teams have the backstory and the sheer drama that befell Lennon and McCartney. Our experts on all things Beatles, Tim Goldich and Paul Schneider weigh in on the songwriting magic of the duo, the very different approaches they had to writing songs, and whether their individual songs come close to their collaborative accomplishments. Lot's of raw meat here for the Beatles geek to consume on STRUNG OUT.

Grant Difford is the founder and head of client strategy of Waking Giants, a firm that specializes in helping businesses grow through leadership, strategy and strategy implementation. In today's episode, Grant shares a ton of actionable take-aways such as the dangers of bad leadership in a business, the importance of providing good customer service as an overall brand strategy, and how entrepreneurs tend to look at and solve the wrong problems in their business. Actionable Take-aways:1. Poor leadership leads to poor outcome. Business leaders tend to be the largest barriers of change in a business so look at your own business and yourself and evaluate if there are any hurdles that you may unintentionally be creating for your business. 2. Brand strategy is dependent on culture and customer experience. If you don't live and breathe the culture, the brand strategy will not work. If you don't have a good customer experience, you can't build a strong brand as well. 3. A customer who had a bad experience can become your best advocate if you provide them with superb customer service, so encourage feedback from all customers, but follow up with them closely when they share that they had a negative experience. The duo of Difford and Tillbrook are up there with Jagger/Richards, Lennon/McCartney, John/Taupin and Holland/Dozier/Holland as one of history's greatest songwriting teams. Glenn's knack for a melody has always provided the perfect space for Chris's intelligent lyrics. Today, Squeeze is as busy as ever. They're currently on tour (some dates as openers for Hall & Oates), and Glenn continues to release strong albums, both with Squeeze and solo. Glenn and I discuss the history of the band, the stories behind some of his deeper tracks, and how he views where Squeeze is now. He's simply one of the best there's ever been. This week we're flying the flag for Britain. Not in a jingoistic way, far from it. We're merely celebrating a few of the many fab people, places and products that are currently on our radar. It just so happens that they are made or conceived in GB. Like Filey Bay Single Malt Whisky, the first (and only?) whisky made, matured, bottled and batched in good old Yorkshire and The Cocktail Society, a drinks subscription service based in Oxford. As far as reading material goes, we pick out the 15th edition of Difford's Guide To Cocktails, created by UK-based Simon Difford. Packed with 600 new and 900 revised cocktail recipes, it's essential reading for cocktail lovers everywhere. Meanwhile, our bar review takes us to Christina's, a brand new bar shining a light on the best of British ingredients, aperitivo style.Lastly, we check in with Remy Savage at Bauhaus in London to talk all things glassware – from the beautiful range of glassware he's formulated for design company Nude, to how different styles of glasses affect the overall drinking experience. Fascinating stuff. What we're mixing:Dark 'N' Stormy50ml / 2 parts dark rum25ml / 1 part fresh lime juice10ml / sugar syrup2 dashes Angostura Aromatic BittersGinger beerFresh lime to garnishMethod:Mix all ingredients, except ginger beer, in a Collins glass. WE'RE BACK!!!!!Thank you for being so patient with us! You will hear all about what we got up to at the beginning of Episode I - Season 2! This episode was called The Old Switcheroo and was all about Changelings in honour our Alex having just had a baby! (he's the cutest thing we have ever seen...but is he really a human? Caoimhe tested him with her very own quiz at the end of the show!)Between the start and the finish though we delved head first into fairy lore and a cultural folktale that has transcended both borders and time - the changeling. From babies being hit in the back of the head with a sheaf of wheat to why eggshells are so mystical, we picked apart the societal fears and worries for new life - and we kept ending up in Tipperary! We also kicked off the season with an ovoid cocktail based off the classic 'flips' courtesy of our resident phantom bartender - Alex! Better Business Better Life! Helping you live your Ideal Entrepreneurial Life through EOS & Experts
Grant runs the vert successful Waking Giants Business. The business describes how it helps as "We work alongside you to develop purposeful strategy that enables you to make it happen." Grant describes what motivates him... "After a life of being a shy kid into my mid-30s I finally realised that I have something important to contribute to the world. It also comes with an unrelenting truth that can be hard to deliver and hear but I believe that that's what we need to grow. Waking Giants is more than just a business for me it's a vision to ensure that no one feels that they can't achieve beyond their current thinking… no hype bullshit, but deep desire to be more in tune with what's possible. We work with people who want to unlock that space, primarily focused on leaders. I love my team, it has taken 10 years to understand what kind of people I want around me and that's the sauce of my passion and inspiration. I would rather three great people than a team of 20 for ego. I am proud of my ability to do things my way and challenge everything I see in front of me… I do that in sport last year running New Zealand's toughest Ultra Marathon in the Southern Alps, I do things that push me physically so I can push mentally… this then translates into my vision. If I am going to teach this stuff, I have to live it." Grant talked to Debra Chantry-Taylor about how 2020 was a tough year but after a 'Clarity Break' realised that there was a different way forward. This epiphany caused them to review their business entirely, looking for ways to do things smarter. There were some tough decisions to be made but it resulted in 2020 being a very profitable year for Waking Giants & more importantly it strengthed the team. Learn how Grant now views business & why he believes that having a better business & not a bigger business leads to better profit. This is an overview of grape brandy around the world, and the different regions, production methods and styles. We distinguish the major grape brandy styles from those spirits made with other fruits, and the range of expressions from Grappa to long-aged brandies of the classic regions like Jerez, Cognac, and Armagnac. Episode 23 covers Pimm's No. 1. A gin based spirit from Great Britain, it's a mainstay of Summer for the British when mixed into its signature cocktail the Pimm's Cup. At 25% ABV, or 50 proof, it's easy drinking, especially when mixed. Enjoy this episode with a Pimm's Cup. Pimm's official website: https://www.anyoneforpimms.com/ (https://www.anyoneforpimms.com/) Brief Historical Timeline: 1840 - James Pimm invents Pimm's No. 1 to be served at his Oyster bar 1851 - No. 2 and No. 3 are introduced 1859 - Production for commercial sale beyond the oyster bar begins 1865 - James Pimm sells his business to Fredrick Sawyer 1880 - Horatio David Davies buys Pimm's 1887 - Pimm's Oyster Houses are franchised throughout London Late 1890s - Horatio becomes Sir Horatio as a member of Parliament then Lord Mayor of London 1906 - Sir Horatio forms Pimm's into a private company and uses his connections to popularize Pimm's No. 1 Post WWII - No. 4 is launched 1960s - No. 5 and No. 6 are launched 1969 - Diageo ancestor acquires Pimm's, Diageo still owns the brand as of 2020 1971 - Pimm's Cup is first sold at Wimbledon 1970s & 80s - Variations other than No. 1 are retired, sales decline 1990s to today - Diageo invests in marketing and Pimm's No. 1 has it's place cemented in the British and world drinks culture Key Cocktail: Pimm's No. 1 is basically a premixed punch. Much of this episode digs into the history of this "fruit cup" cocktail. Pimm's No. 1 is synonymous with the Pimm's Cup cocktail. The British way is to mix 1 part Pimm's No. 1 with 3 parts Lemonade and garnish heavily with Strawberry, Orange, Cucumber and a sprig of Mint. The American (or more specifically, New Orleans) way is to substitute the lemonade for Sprite, 7-Up or other lemon lime soda. And cut back on the garnish a bit. Glenn Tilbrook met Chris Difford in 1973, after answering an ad for a guitar player in London. That meeting set the foundation for the pop band Squeeze, which rose to stardom in the 70s & 80s with songs like Cool for Cats, Tempted and Hour Glass. After more than a dozen albums, several breakups and different solo projects, Glenn talks about going back out on a U.S. tour with Chris and Squeeze nearly 50 years after they first got together.

This week, we wrap up the Squeeze discography with their 2017 album, The Knowledge. On this outing, the band pushes the excitement, inventiveness, and energy of Cradle to the Grave up to 11. When it hits, it really hits ("Innocence in Paradise," "Departure Lounge," "Patchouli"), but it's by no means perfect ("A&E," "Rough Ride"). Also, still no Difford lead vocal--what's up with that? Sitting in the guest host chair this week, Paul Mosier. Talking to Paul is always a trip. You never know where the conversation is going to go, and it's fantastic. Paul is the author of a number of books, including three middle grade novels for HarperCollins: Train I Ride, Echo's Sister, and Summer and July (forthcoming). The guys talk about Lost Spirits Distillery in downtown Los Angeles after Ben toured the facility. Surprisingly clear minded, Ben discusses how Lost Spirits recreates forgotten and of course, lost, spirits. Sometimes making a what tastes like a twenty year old rye and produced in one week, using flash aging, essentially using light and sound to rapidly age spirits, utilizing scientific equipment to mimic traditional spirits. It sounds like a gimmick, but it’s also really good. What do you think? For today, we discuss the Trinidad Sour. You’ll need Angostura bitters, orgeat, fresh lemon juice and your favorite rye whiskey! A modern classic! It has a unique identity because there is nothing like it. Invented by Guiseppe Gonzalez, a well traveled modern legend in the bar world, from Clover Club, and now in Las Vegas at Herbs and Rye. It’s a different take on cocktails, taking an essential ingredient for cocktails and making it the base of there drink, the star of the show is Angostura bitters. It’s high proof and can carry a drink! Blind taste it with amaro and you might not know the difference at first. Typically a catalyst for blending flavors, bitters are like salt and pepper, the seasoning of drinks. For our home bartenders, the source for the recipe comes from Difford’s guide: an ounce and a half of angostura bitters, half ounce of your favorite rye, maybe Rittenhouse Rye, wink wink, a full ounce of orgeat, an almond syrup, and three quarter ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice. Don’t forget your ice, shake it up, then pour it into a coup. You’ll drink this up, with no ice. Kim learned to use one ounce instead of Ben’s ounce and a half, so maybe to taste is the best way to go. The spiciness of the bitters with the rye, contrasted with the bold orgeat flavor, the juxtaposition is a perfect pairing. This is a disruptor type of cocktail. The name is in reference to the bitters, made in Trinidad & Topango, the Angostura bitters is a classic ingredient. A four ingredient cocktail, simple and beautiful.
On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1991 album, Play--their only album for Reprise Records. Featuring the highlights Letting Go, The Day I Get Home, The Truth, and Walk a Straight Line, the album holds the distinction of being the last one prior to Chris Difford pursuing a life of sobriety. It strained the Difford and Tilbrook relationship even further, and continued to see the band's commercial success decline in the face of their more mature and arguably more artistically rewarding work. I primarily say arguably, because this week's co-host, artist and musician Doug Bale, argues otherwise. It's a fun conversation between two music lovers holding a difference of opinion. On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1987 commercial peak, Babylon and On. Featuring the hits "Hourglass" and, unfortunately, "853-5937," Babylon and On marks the beginning of a turning point for Squeeze with career highlights such as "Tough Love" and "Footprints" showing that the Difford and Tilbrook could still write a hell of a song. On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's difficult (for most people) 1985 reunion album, Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti. As the discussion with guest host Dan Hull reveals, however, there is a LOT to love about this album despite any flaws its very of-the-time production and the drug-induced mental states of Difford and Tilbrook may have saddled it with. Dan is a gifted storyteller who has a long history in the Phoenix storytelling community. He currently produces and co-hosts The Storyline SLAM, which takes place every month at The Newton, and you've got to check out Bad Buddhist, a film of his one man show of the same name. https://www.thestoryline.org/ https://badbuddhistmovie.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. On this edition of Album Infinitum, Cool for Cats. The album that spawned the classic singles "Goodbye Girl," "Up the Junction," "Cool for Cats," and "Slap and Tickle," Cool for Cats is largely considered by Difford and Tilbrook to be the first proper Squeeze album, it cemented the band's placement as one of the best pop bands of all time, and put them at the crest of the crashing New Wave. In the co-host seat for this episode is the wonderful Mr. Jason Woodbury. Jason is a member of the Zia Records home office team, a music writer, a musician, part of Aquarium Drunkard (be sure to check out the AD podcast Transmissions!), and just an all around great guy--especially to talk music with. And so it begins! Squeeze is absolutely one of the best bands of all time, whether you know it or not, and we kick things off with their stutter step of a start, the John Cale-produced eponymous debut (or U.K. Squeeze if you bought the album stateside in 1978). The album features one of the greatest singles of all time, "Take Me, I'm Yours," and gives an uneven first impression from there, though the Difford and Tilbrook songwriting partnership and trademark vocal dynamic flourish throughout. Joining this discussion is guest co-host Paul Mosier (@mosier_paul on Twitter), whose novels for middle grade readers--Train I Ride, Echos Sister, and the forthcoming Summer and July (2020)--are available from HarperCollins publishing at any fine book selling establishment. Chris Difford is a rare breed. As a member of one of London's best-loved bands, the Squeeze co-founder has made a lasting contribution to English music with hits such as 'Cool For Cats', 'Up The Junction', 'Labelled With Love', 'Hourglass' and 'Tempted'. Even before his first release in 1977, his love of writing lyrics has never wavered. In Some Fantastic Place, Difford charts his life from his early days as a dreaming boy in south London with a talent for poetry to becoming a member of one of Britain's greatest bands and beyond. Along the way he reveals the inspiration and stories behind Squeeze's best-known songs, and his greatest highs and lows from over four decades of making music. Today we discuss the theory behind the Butterfly Effect, Quantum Mechanics and how easy it really all can be - if we make that our choice.
It's all about authenticity and apparently we all need to be coached to understand it. Not sure Paul and I agree on this one. We also discuss the three C's of vulnerability - courage, connection and compassion...
So many of us are able to rev the engines and get all excited about the 'big' idea, but so often quit before we start. Here Paul and I discuss the reasons why action is so important and why we struggle to execute.

From the mid 70s through to the late 90s, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook had a songwriting partnership that had the pundits comparing them to Lennon/McCartney. Don’t feel under any pressure, guys. As mainstays of the band Squeeze, Tilbrook’s music and Difford’s lyrics covered a multitude of subjects including spouse abuse, living under cramped conditions, infidelity, and wanking. They survived the new wave label and later on, the AOR label to just make great songs till Squeeze’s demise. Both men have recorded great solo albums, and different to their Squeeze output. Difford’s lyrics have become very personal, and on his latest album “Cashmere If You Can”, he sounds like he’s been listening to a lot of Loudon Wainwright III records.
