Last week we began a conversation with Vidyha Karthekiyan. If you want to learn more about her training, you can visit her web site and facebook page - the unlikelytricksters.com. There you will meet Beanie, her site hound and her two cats. From that you can correctly infer that the animals in Vidyha’s life are not horses. If you listened to last week’s podcast, you will know we are very much on the same wavelength when it comes to our animals. She works with dogs and cats, we work with horses. The difference in species doesn’t matter. Concept training can be taught to them all. In this episode we define what concept training means, and then Vidyha describes some of the games she plays with Beanie. She uses match to sample to play card games we remember from childhood - Go Fish and War. Intrigued? So were we, so of course we invited Vidyha to join us for a conversation on concept training. What does that mean and how do you teach it? Have fun!

The Mandalorian gave Star Wars fans what they’ve always wanted: a live action TV series set in the galaxy far, far away. It also gave parents a headache when no Baby Yoda toys hit the shelves before the holidays. Merchandizing aside, we had a lot to talk about here, from callbacks to the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series and the no-longer-canon Old Republic, as well as guest stars galore. And then, in a totally bizarre detour, we discuss Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles, a comic based on the pink cartoon mountain lion set during the Red Scare. Intrigued? So were we! A Their Story interview with Marco Ciappelli & Sean Martin Guest: Mario Vuksan, Founder and CEO, ReversingLabs The organization telling us their story today is ReversingLabs. This is a story that started about ten years ago; however, in some ways it goes back a bit further than that—and perhaps we will never catch up with the present. Is a story about a different approach to cybersecurity that has, at its core, a profound desire to understand how technology works and evolves; that places security center-stage in every discipline related—not only to computer science—but to all activities connected to the well-being and progressive development of our society. This is a story about the importance of decoding the past and breaking things apart to learn how they have been conceptualized and constructed; doing so as a means for us to understand their history, internalize their meaning, and to build better versions in the future. It is what reversing problems is all about. Digging back into how things came to be. When you apply this concept to cybersecurity you can open an entirely new universe to explore in a different way; a universe made of source code, compilers, and binary structures; all of which needs to be studied, understood, analyzed, and re-built. Doing so will enable us to examine our past and present and build for the future capitalizing on the vast wealth of knowledge that now we have available. Intrigued? So were we. Have a listen. ___________________________ Learn more about ReversingLabs on ITSPmagazine here: https://www.itspmagazine.com/company-directory/reversinglabs Learn more about Their Story podcasts here: https://www.itspmagazine.com/their-infosec-story

Revisiting Biased Word Embeddings

The topic of bias in word embeddings gets yet another pass this week. It all started a few years ago, when an analogy task performed on Word2Vec embeddings showed some indications of gender bias around professions (as well as other forms of social bias getting reproduced in the algorithm’s embeddings). We covered the topic again a while later, covering methods for de-biasing embeddings to counteract this effect. And now we’re back, with a second pass on the original Word2Vec analogy task, but where the researchers deconstructed the “rules” of the analogies themselves and came to an interesting discovery: the bias seems to be, at least in part, an artifact of the analogy construction method. Intrigued? So were we… Relevant link: https://arxiv.org/abs/1905.09866

Our topic today is… pizza. Specifically, plant-based, vegan cauliflower pizza crust. Intrigued? So was I. Today’s guest, Amy Lacey started making cauliflower pizza crust in her kitchen in order to find healthier alternatives to her favorite foods after being diagnosed with lupus. With the help of her daughter, Caroline, she created a proprietary recipe that her friends and family loved so much, they encouraged her to go out and sell it. After selling the crusts at her local farmer’s market, Amy decided to start selling them online too. That decision was a resounding success. Last year, her company went from negative $250,000 to earning $4 million dollars in only 10 months. What does she contribute to her success? Well, there are currently 23.5 million people who suffer from an autoimmune disease. Amy’s products offer them a way to enjoy the food they love the most without uncomfortable side effects. Plus, Amy runs her business with the commitment to make an incredible difference and give back to her community. She’s very focused on forming not only a business but also a community of like minded individuals who are looking for a way to lead healthier lives. We’ll talk about this and more, including what it was like to share her pizza crusts with the cast of Hamilton!
