(S4 Ep25) The Doors - Strange Days Released September 25, 1967, Recorded between May-August 1967 (Elektra) Strange Days, The Doors' ambitious sophomore album, blends dark, poetic themes with groundbreaking production. Opening with the eerie Moog-driven title track—one of rock's earliest uses of the synthesizer—the album dives into surrealism, alienation, and existential dread. Highlights include hits like “People Are Strange” and “Love Me Two Times,” the experimental “Horse Latitudes,” and the 11-minute epic “When the Music's Over.” Jim Morrison's lyrics, often lifted from his notebooks, showcase a maturing vocal performance. At the same time, Ray Manzarek's keyboards, Robby Krieger's inventive guitar, and John Densmore's jazz-inflected drumming create a rich sonic palette. Despite a mixed initial reception, Strange Days is now regarded as a milestone in psychedelic rock, influencing subsequent genres such as gothic and post-punk. The album's avant-garde cover, atmospheric production by Bruce Botnick, and dense, evocative songwriting confirm The Doors as one of America's most innovative 1960s bands, far more than just Morrison's myth.Signature Songs: "Love Me Two Times," "People Are Strange," "When The Music's Over"Full Album: YouTube Spotify Playlist” YouTube Spotify

Tonight we take a moment to reflect, remember and honor some musicians that left us too early. Recently I learned of Christine Havrilla's passing after a battle with cancer. And I was struck by this news and the fact that she was on my list to reach out to about possibly coming on this show. I was saddened that I had not done that sooner and now missed the opportunity. And I remembered others who also left us too soon who I wished I had the chance to speak to. Some who passed years before I had a show like Ted Hawkins or Josh Clayton-Felt of School of Fish; and others who more recently like Justin Townes Earle and Karl Wallinger of World Party. Each of these brilliant musicians leaves their legacy for us to still listen to and enjoy, and in fact could become your next favorite band.Music in this episode:"The Good and The Bad" by Ted Hawkins"3 Strange Days" by School of Fish"The Good Life" by Justin Townes Earle"Way Down Now" by World Party"Fortune Teller" by Christine Havrilla & Gypsy FuzzI've decided to still try to dedicate an episode to share the stories and the music of these artists and I've started research to see if there are people connected to them and can help us put it out there. If you're able to help contribute or introduce us to someone who can, please let us know.Hope you like this episode, and remember to seize the moment.Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". If you tuned in today because you already knew this musician - thank you very much! Canadian electro-industrial band Front Line Assembly, led by Bill Leeb with longtime collaborator Rhys Fulber, released their eighth album Hard Wired in 1995. The album blends harsh electronic beats, cinematic synth textures, distorted vocals, and heavy guitar riffs, all characteristics of the industrial and cyberpunk aesthetics of the mid-'90s (think Hackers, Strange Days, Johnny Mnemonic). Lyrically and thematically, Hard Wired explores dystopian, technological, and transhumanist topics, reflecting fears and fascinations with the digital age, surveillance, and the loss of humanity in a mechanized world. Polished yet gritty production, mixing cold mechanical rhythms with a dark, atmospheric intensity, the album bridges the gap between their earlier EBM (Electronic Body Music) roots and a heavier, more industrial rock-influenced style. Zo is at the end of the twentieth century in Las Angeles as it promises to be the grandest place to celebrate the coming of the year 2000. It is a time to be careful as the people are on the edge of rioting and there is a constant police presence. Whole squads of police in riot gear and police helicopters are everywhere. Among all of this carefully controlled chaos is a guy that tried to sell Zo on the idea of using this high tech device to jack someone's real life memories straight into Zo's brain. The salesman, a man named Lenny, drives a hard sell, and his offer is tempting, but Zo is weary and the whole thing feels like a drug deal. Lenny moves on and Zo considers . . . Jacking someone's thoughts straight into his brain? These are Strange Days indeed. Pamela Anderson starring films. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss The Last Showgirl (2024) and Barb Wire (1996). We begin by discussing Barb Wire and showering it with praise (excuse the pun). We celebrate the 90s-ness of the film. We talk about all the homages and connections we noticed in Barb Wire, including Casablanca (1942), Batman Forever (1995), Alien 3 (1992), Mad Max (1979), Romeo + Juliet (1996), Candyman (1992), Strange Days (1995), and Total Recall (1990). We praise the cast, including Xander Berkeley, Udo Kier and Temuera Morrison. We discuss the production values of Barb Wire, including the visual effects, action, cinematography and other production values. Our conversation explores the criticism of Barb Wire and how the tastes of audiences shifted over the 90s, making connections to Waterworld (1995), Cutthroat Island (1995), Hook (1991) and Charlie's Angels (2000). We move our discussion to The Last Showgirl, directed by Gia Coppola. We talk about the strength of the performances from Pamela Anderson, Brenda Song, Dave Bautista, Billie Lourd and Jamie Lee Curtis. We unpack the script, the tone, the direction and the ultimate aim of the film, with differing reactions from Sarah, William and Jeremy.

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It's time for a Legal Speak Spotlight ... where we turn back the clock and revisit a previous episode you may have missed. And considering how much the current administration is in the news cycle, this still feels timely. In this week's Legal Speak episode, ALM litigation reporter Emily Saul joins hosts Cedra Mayfield and Patrick Smith for a roundup discussion of the first criminal trial for President Trump. This was the final in the ongoing series "Sidebar with Saul". Emily was one of the small handful of reporters with access to the trial. Hosts: Cedra Mayfield & Patrick Smith Guest: Emily Saul Producer: Charles Garnar
Am I just whistling past the graveyard? Here is Trump in the Arlington Cemetery, dishonoring fallen heroes by turning the visit into a campaign event. No man can go lower than Trump. I am, however, noticing for the first time, that the woman standing next to him is making the Devil's Hand Sign. Unbelievable! Did anybody notice it at the time the story was in the news?

Tune in as Brett Salter (Irish Salt) jumps back into his guest chair for a breakdown of Reminiscence, the 2021 tech noir movie that feels strongly evocative of predecessors like Strange Days, Inception, and Chinatown while presenting the ways in which humanity has sunk back into old memories as an escape from the flooding and the climate change that's plaguing its near-future dystopia. The humid and melancholy atmosphere that drips off of this film, debunking a myth about the Titanic, and Hugh Jackman knowing just how to sink his teeth into characters with intense and obsessive souls stand out as a few of the topics that the hosts cover on this episode. Written and directed by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Daniel Wu, Marina de Tavira, Brett Cullen, Mojean Aria, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan, Javier Molina, Sam Medina, and Nico Parker.
