I was super late getting this one out, so everyone gets to hear the Patreon songs! Also, found poetry!   Album of the Week: Lydia Loveless -- Daughter Daughter finds Americana stalwart Loveless at the ebb of significant upheaval: a divorce, a relocation, a cathartic but tumultuous outing of bad practices at her previous label, Bloodshot Records, the reverberations of which are still being felt three years later.   But all of that has led to one thing: out with the bad, and in with the good. On Daughter, Loveless is searching for answers amidst a way forward. She’s continuing to explore that sort of disco pop that’s marked her last few releases, though that sense of freedom has also drawn her to explore some back-to-basics Americana with much more sure-footed songwriting. It’s still a Lydia Loveless album, after all, and there are plenty of albums to cry, sip, or smoke along to: whatever it is that helps you feel washed clean after a good bout of searching the bottom of your soul. Johanna Rose -- “A Nite Like This” AND “Only Good” (Only Good Nites) Concetta Abate -- “A Bit of Rain” (Mirror Touch) Lydia Luce -- “Dark River” (Single) Lydia Loveless -- “Wringer” AND “Daughter” (Daughter) Emily Zuzik -- “Stay Wild” AND “Chinese Food and Donuts” (Torch & Trouble)) Phillipa Cookman -- “Greasy Mabel” (Single) Girls on Grass -- “Spill Your Guts” (Spill Your Guts/Who’s Gonna Cry? 7”) Al Holbrook -- “Guru Lover Star” (Rocket Ships For Dreamers) Bonnie Whitmore -- “Fine” AND “Flashes & Cables” (Last Will & Testament) Bison Bone -- “Downtown” AND “Drinking To Do” (Find Your Way Out) Mike West -- “Rock Ferry” (The Next Life) Jensen Sisters -- “Beat of a Bad Habit” AND “On the Fringe” (Yellow Shades) Brendan and the Strangest Ways -- “Anxiety” (Single) Olivia Ellen Lloyd -- “Emily” (Single) Bette Smith -- “I Felt It” (The Good, The Bad, The Bette) Send me music via SubmitHub! This week's guests are Carl Nichols and Johanna Rosa, a duo who makes beautiful music together as Nickel&Rose. Since the folk project formed roughly three years ago, the pair has played all around Europe, toured around the continental United States and shared the stage with The SteelDrivers among others. Before Nichols and Rose found each other and started Nickel&Rose, they played in a ton of other bands that touch on almost as many different musical genres. During a rare span of time between tours, they came to Milwaukee Record headquarters to tell My First Band host Tyler Maas how they met and how the project came to be, before discussing their divergent musical paths that led them to where they are today. Over the course of the long, informative and lighthearted conversation, Nichols talked about trying to recruit bandmates on Craigslist as a Mars-Volta-obsessed teen, and Rose talked about throwing herself into Milwaukee's music scene after returning home from Oregon. Along the way, Maas annoyed the guests with regrettable puns and Rose entirely forgot about another band she currently plays in. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers"), New Boyz Club ("Taxes") and Nickel&Rose ("Another Man").

Nickel & Rose is an American folk-music duo made up of upright bassist Johanna Rose and guitarist Carl Nichols. They formed in the summer of 2016 and spent their first winter and the following spring traveling Europe, playing dozens of shows in France, Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine. While in Berlin they recorded their EP, Oh Sweet Love, released in April 2017. Oh Sweet Love, is a sweet-sounding auditory souvenir of Nichols’ and Rose’s four month European journey and a recorded testament to the two-piece’s ability to turn tough times into something vibrant with help from a traveling companion. Nickel & Rose have influences that span the spectrum of American music. Carl’s background brings elements of West African music and blues while Johanna brings her experience playing bluegrass, folk and jazz. From loss and heartbreak to love, Nickel & Rose address the human experience with gentle harmonies and soul-stirring cries. With a shared appreciation for traditional music and a desire to break rules, the two have have created a unique sound that embodies Americana’s past and future.
