Today I speak with Jen Stark and Jarrid Green, Co-Directors, of the Center for Business and Social Justice. We candidly discuss how DEI and other topics became flashpoints and ideological hostages rather than sustained corporate efforts, and how companies can break this cycle. We explore the questions executives and boards are asking, how companies can respond to activist shareholders and continue to promote fairness and equity while also fulfilling their responsibility to ensure strong financial performance - and why we're “beyond the business case” so we can adapt our narrative. Jen and Jarrid offer valuable advice on how everyone from the C-suite to DEIB and CSR professionals in the trenches can stay motivated and respond. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:You cannot be neutral anymore. Consumers want to know what their money will support and want to be value aligned.Be authentic with yourself - you need to understand why you are doing what you are doing.Lean into your smaller, individual communities. Mass media and social media information sharing is not enough. "We've left the era of case-making. There are enough data points, surveys, and white papers that if it is was just rational thought governing business decisions, you'd be in a different place." — Jen Stark Episode References: Kerner Report: pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/bombshell-political-reportThe Center's Social Justice Guidebook: bsr.org/en/focus/equity-inclusion-and-justiceHow to Survive a Plague by David France: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/209900/how-to-survive-a-plague-by-david-franceSuffs: The Musical: suffsmusical.comFrom Our Partner:SparkEffect partners with organizations to unlock the full potential of their greatest asset: their people. Although Goodison Park: My Home is a series mostly dedicated to Everton players, we make a change of gear for part 4 as Chris Beesley speaks to Blues super fan Dr David France. Growing up in humble surroundings in Widnes and coming from a family of Evertonians stretching back five generations, the 75-year-old affectionately known as 'Dr Everton' is a retired oil and gas industry executive who sold his 10,000-item collection of Everton memorabilia to the club at a heavily discounted price so it could be kept for posterity while also founding the Everton Former Players' Foundation to raise money for the physical and pastoral care of ex-professionals who have represented the club. He was also the founder and driving force behind the Gwladys Street Hall of Fame, the EFC Heritage Society, Everton War Memorials and has authored 19 books about Everton with proceeds donated to Merseyside charities. Making transatlantic trips to watch his beloved Blues play having moved to the USA several decades ago, David has watched many of Everton's greatest players over the years while also befriending lots of them through his projects. More than one billion people in the world are now living with obesity. The number of people who are underweight has also fallen according to a new global study, but this does not necessarily mean that people are better fed. In some countries insufficient food has been replaced by food that does not contain the nutrition that people need, with obesity now the most common form of malnutrition in many places. Claudia Hammond talks to study author Professor Majid Ezzati about the results and what can be done to halt the trend of increasing global obesity.Research has shown that sleep deprivation can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while regularly eating fruit and vegetables can reduce the risk. Yet it wasn't known whether a healthy diet could compensate for a lack of sleep. Now, researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden have discovered that people who eat healthily but sleep for less than six hours a day are still at higher risk of type 2 diabetes. GP Dr Ayan Panja joins Claudia in the studio to pick over the findings and talk about the importance of sleep to your health.Ayan also brings news of a new study into screen time and language development in children. While this study found that screen time has a negative impact on children, previous studies have found that the right kind of television programme can be beneficial. Claudia and Ayan discuss the difficulties of finding answers to questions about the impact of screen time. With the Oscars about to take place in Hollywood, we'll be wondering what the best films are for learning about global health. Professor Madhukar Pai from McGill University in Canada uses movies in his teaching, and has even put together a list of over one hundred films that accurately portray health stories. He tells us what makes the perfect health movie. And there's more from British journalist Mike Powell as he prepares for his kidney transplant operation. One morning in 1991, Senator Jesse Helms' house was covered with a giant fake condom in an act of protest. Helms had been a vocal opponent of funding AIDS research and he had introduced an infamous and popular bill amendment that prevented federal money from being spent on AIDS research. There were few treatments available at the time, and with no help from the government, HIV was actively spreading across the country. In 1991 alone, nearly 30,000 American died of AIDS, and the numbers would keep rising until the late nineties. The condom on Helms' house was courtesy of the protest group ACT UP, which led a number of high profile direct actions meant to call attention to the AIDS crisis and get people angry. UnTextbooked's Jordan Pettiford was curious about queer history. She came out to her family around the same time the Covid-19 pandemic began. While the context of Covid felt different, she noticed some strange similarities between the present day and the history of AIDS—especially the way in which viruses become political. In this episode, Jordan interviews David France, author of How to Survive a Plague. David France was a first-hand witness to the AIDS epidemic in New York City. Hard-hitting documentaries and cutting-edge VFX rarely go together, but for David France's Welcome to Chechnya, it was necessary to marry the two. The film captures the flight of LGBTQ citizens from the Russian republic of Chechnya, where being gay can lead to beatings and murders. To preserve his subjects' anonymity while allowing the audience to connect with them emotionally, David turned to VFX expert Ryan Laney to digitally swap faces with willing “donors” from around the world. Ryan explains how he developed new techniques to replace faces without the limitations of traditional methods such as blurring and pixelation. He also discusses his 20-plus-years in movie VFX, including The Matrix, The Aviator, The Day After Tomorrow, and many more. It's proof that VFX's role in filmmaking now extends far beyond Hollywood blockbusters— and it's had a surprising effect on Ryan's outlook, too.

We admit that when our friends at Liverpool's deCoubertin Books reached out recently with an advance look at their upcoming title devoted to the history of one of England's most venerable top-flight soccer clubs, we weren't immediately sold on the premise, nor its applicability to our (admittedly) odd brand of sports curiosity. But after just a few minutes with the meticulously detailed "Toffee Soccer: Everton and North America," we became not only intrigued by the rich, storied saga of Everton F.C.'s 143-year journey into what is now known as the English Premier League - but downright fascinated with its surprising contributions to the development of the game in North America. Toffee co-authors David France and Rob Sawyer join the podcast this week to shine light on the little-known, but undeniable connection between the "Blues" and the rise of the modern-day pro game in the US & Canada. From the club's unexpected 1961 runner-up finish in the influential International Soccer League, to its subsequent supply of dozens of top players to the foundational North American Soccer League of the 70s/80s, to its recent embrace of world-class American players like Landon Donovan and Tim Howard - the "People's Club" has been an unwittingly integral part of soccer's Stateside history - far beyond Goodison Park.

David France is a documentary filmmaker, writer and journalist in New York, whose directing credits include Oscar-Nominated How To Survive a Plague, The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson, and last year's Welcome to Chechnya, the horrific story of the genocide of queer people in the Russian state of Chechnya. In this Skype interview we discussed his transition from journalism to film, how he ensured the anonymity of his subjects through ground-breaking VFX and ADR, and his working relationship with legendary mixer Lora Hirschberg, who has also worked on films such as The Dark Knight and Inception. Many expected the HBO Films documentary, "Welcome To Chechnya," to be shortlisted for this year's Oscars in the Best Documentary Feature category. However, what many didn't expect, is that it would simultaneously be shortlisted for Best Visual Effects. The film has resonated with many since its world premiere at last year's Sundance Film Festival due to its powerful story of activism, defiance and perseverance in the face of a corrupt and brutal regime. Director David France and visual effects supervisor Ryan Laney were both kind enough to talk to us about the film, highlighting the visual effects work done to protect the identities of many of the documentary's subjects and more! In Chechnya, LGBTQ+ people are living in fear of being discovered and killed, just for being who they are. A group of activists are risking their lives to create safehouses to help persecuted Chechens escape. Oscar-nominated filmmaker David France discusses his documentary Welcome to Chechnya, which is a tribute to the human spirit. While we celebrate Pride this year, we are reminded that hard-fought rights can be reversed and that we must speak up in defense of those who are vulnerable.

This is a very difficult, upsetting and triggering episode. Today we're joined by director David France to talk about his latest film Welcome To Chechnya."Unmatched since Hitler, it's a government led campaign to round up and eliminate all LGBT people. The Final Solution…happening before our eyes"Since April 2017, the government in Chechnya has initiated state sanctioned murder, forced disappearances, abductions, imprisonment, torture of LGBTQ+ citizens - with an unknown number of people dying after being detained in what human rights groups call concentration camps. The head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov denies all of the above - or that gay people exist in Chechnya, stating that such people would be killed by their own families. In some cases, gay men have been let out of prison, specifically to enable their murder by relatives.David's latest film Welcome to Chechnya shines a light on a vast underground network of safe houses, contacts, and pipelines created by Russian LGBTQ+ groups to help vulnerable LGBTQ+ people escape these horrors.
