Episode 294: Formed in Dallas in 1992, Old 97's became one of the seminal bands of the alternative country movement, alongside Whiskeytown, Son Volt, the Bottle Rockets and BR549. At its heart was the longtime friendship of bass player Murry Hammond and guitarist/songwriter Rhett Miller. Remarkably, across 13 albums and millions of miles, Old 97's remains the same quartet that broke out on Bloodshot Records three decades ago. They're still having fun and keeping company with their large base of lifelong fans. Craig made a field trip to Lexington, KY this summer to catch a show and sit down with Miller to talk about the long road and the newest album American Primitive.

Hello friends! Austin based, singer-songwriter, Jason Hawk Harris is my guest for episode 1324! Jason's latest album, a musical exploration of grief after losing his mother, Thin Places is available now on all streaming services and vinyl on Bloodshot Records. He'll be starting a U.S. tour in January. Go to jasonhawkharris.com for tour dates, vinyl, videos and more. Jason and I have a great conversation about losing his mom and how he wrote an album about dealing with that loss, growing up in Houston, moving to L.A. when he was 18, having his label, Bloodshot Records go under after his first release then being resurrected just in time to release Thin Places, and more on ep 1324. I had a great time getting to know Jason. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Get the chords and tabs to over a million songs and start playing today with Ultimate Guitar If you feel so inclined. “Every time I'm on the sidewalk, I want to step into the road,” sings Lydia Loveless on her new song “Runaway.”“Let this Kia flatten me cause I don't want to come home.”It's a set of lyrics that packs a wallop but one that she laughs about in our interview. Lydia is in a pretty good place right now, anticipating the release of her new album, Nothing's Gonna Stand In My Way Again and with her depression under pretty good control at the moment. But she says that depression and thoughts of suicide have been with her since childhood and throughout some tough times with relationships and a record label.Pre-order your copy of Nothing's Gonna Stand In My Way Again, out September 22nd, 2023, wherever records are sold. Fleetwood Mac [01:08] "I Don't Want to Know" Rumours Warner Bros. Records BSK 3010 1977 Funny how the classic rock radio format ruined so much music for me through it's incessant repetition of what it deemed classic, and yet I still thoroughly enjoy Rumours. A fun little number originally from the Buckingham Nicks days. Deerhoof [04:22] "Twin Killers" The Runners Four Children of the Hoof #1 2006 Maybe it's my Gemini nature (certainly not my killer nature) that draws me to this song. Arlo Guthrie [06:41] "Coming in to Los Angeles" Running Down the Road Reprise Records RS 6346 1969 Some solid country rock on this sophomore album from Woody's son. Support musicians include Clarence White, Ry Cooder, Gene Parsons, James Burton, Chris Ethridge and Jim Gordon. Ah the joys of travelling while holding. Neil Young & Crazy Horse [10:48] "Pocahontas" Rust Never Sleeps Reprise Records HS 2295 1979 Neil, I can probably tell you how she felt. The Rutles [14:10] "Cheese and Onions" The Rutles Warner Bros. While my favorite Rutles song is "I Must Be in Love (https://youtu.be/54KBPA20b9Q)", "Cheese and Onions runs a close second, thank in no small part to the Galaxie 500 cover (https://youtu.be/pAzdSeAwKpg) of that song. Jon Langford was a founding member of The Mekons, a band formed by art students at The University of Leeds. After moving from Newport, Wales to Chicago, Illinois in the early '90s, Jon formed The Waco Brothers, a country-punk group. In addition to playing music in many bands, he works as a producer on many records. Jon also writes books, has a comic strip, and creates a lot of artwork. This is an episode that I've been looking forward to since before (*both laugh*) was even an idea for a show. I was introduced to Sarah Shook's music when their debut album, Sidelong, was rereleased by Bloodshot Records back in 2017 (it had initially been self-released by their band, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, several years prior but I was waaaay out of the loop at that point). I found Sidelong to be an interesting listen; it felt like it ran a real throwback country-and-western vibe through a little bit of a modern roadhouse filter. It certainly wasn't like much else I listened to at the time, and Sidelong and its follow-up, 2018's Years, even stood out amongst the large quantity of Bloodshot artists I'd been listening to for a long time (Cory Branan, Scott H. Biram, Murder By Death, Lydia Loveless, etc). The Disarmers went into the studio in California to record their third album in early 2020, just as the world was on the cusp of shutting down for the foreseeable future. Label issues and supply chain issues and inability to tour issues got in the way got in the way, as they're wont to do. Fast forward to 2022 and Sarah Shook is on the cusp of releasing their third album. It's called Nightroamer and it's on a new label (Thirty Tigers) and it's really, REALLY good. Fans of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers will certainly find plenty of recognizable sounds, but there are left turns and even-further-left turns and some new and different subject matter. All of that results in an immensely compelling listen, easily their best output to date. We caught up with Sarah to talk at length about the new album; from finishing the recording roughly a week before the pandemic became "a thing" in the States, to the obvious label issues, to the choice of when to actually release it to the world. We also talked about some of the subject matter; parts of the album were written after Shook got sober, and obviously created a very different writing process for them this time around. Perhaps most compellingly, we talked about their increasing involvement as a vocal force to be reckoned with, advocating for the elevating of queer and non-white voices in the country music world. Oh, and we talked about their growing up in strictly religious household and teaching themselves to play guitar and write songs in spite of having no popular music frame of reference, a concept that is truly mind-boggling to me. Nightroamer is due out February 18th. Pre-orders are still available here: https://www.disarmers.com/store/Music-c23349544 You can also check out the Disarmers' videos and live performances and more on their YouTube page here: https://www.youtube.com/c/SarahShooktheDisarmers/videos (*both laughs*) theme song is an excerpt from [laughs] track "Hurts To Laugh." © KALI MASI 2021 ℗ Take This To Heart Records 2021

Joe was also a touring musician in the '90s, hosts his own radio show, and co-founded the https://altcountrychart.com/ (Alt-country Specialty Radio Chart) — so he's got a LOT of wisdom to share not only on the radio side, but on building a music industry career in general. For Episode 41 of (*both laugh*), we caught up with Nate Cook from The Yawpers for a quick hitter about his upcoming bike ride from New York to Los Angeles. Yes, you read that right...beginning on the 4th of July, Nate Cook from The Yawpers (whose 2019 Bloodshot Records release Human Question is still in heavy rotation in this house) is cycling from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. Cook took up cycling early in the pandemic, and last summer he embarked on a 700-mile ride from Denver to Tulsa as a fundraiser for the Sweet Relief Musician's Fund. For this year's ride, dubbed Go West, Aging Man (or GxAx for short), Cook decided to go bigger, since he figures he'll be on tour every summer going forward. Two months. NY to LA. A few shows along the way. All on a bicycle, and all for Sweet Relief again. As an added bonus, GxAx has added another rider this year. Badass singer/drummer Liliana Urbain is going west to east via a more northern route; she left Washington State a couple weeks ago and is presently in Montana with her sights set on Portland, Maine! This week's guest is Scott H. Biram, but you might know him as "The Dirty Old One Man Band." Since releasing his solo debut in the year 2000, the tireless troubadour has played thousands upon thousands of shows at venues of all sizes and scope in North America, toured Europe more than 20 times, had songs featured on popular TV shows and Oscar-nominated films, and put out 11 albums. A couple months after he released Fever Dreams — his latest album, which came out on Bloodshot Records last November — Biram took some time out of his uncharacteristically quiet schedule to talk to My First Band host Tyler Maas about his 20-plus-year solo run and everything that came beforehand. Over the course of an hour-long discussion, Biram talked about how he's keeping busy and staying productive during a pandemic, his upbringing in a fairly small Texas town, the inspiration artists like Doc Watson and Townes Van Zandt had on him early on, and his stints in adolescent and early adulthood outfits like The Happy Trees and The Thangs. Along the way, the accomplished singer-songwriter opened up about his decision to branch out on his own, what the "H" stands for (hint: it's not his middle name), getting signed to Bloodshot, the ups and downs of more than two decades spent on the road, performing on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, punching "The Devil" in the stomach in Atlanta, and much more. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Scott H. Biram ("Hobo Jungle").

This week we catch up with acclaimed roots-rocker Sarah Shook. For most of the last decade, Sarah has been making cut-to-the-bone country music of her own aching outlaw variety - first with her early band The Devil and now with her seasoned group of sensitive twang-rock shitkickers - The Disarmers. Homeschooled in deeply religious seclusion around upstate New York and North Carolina, Shook largely only heard classical composers growing up. As a loner creative teenager trying to process her hidden bi-sexuality, she described hearing Elliott Smith and Belle & Sebastian as revelatory - finally someone felt like her and found a way to share it with the world. But it was after encountering the raw honesty in the songs of Johnny Cash that she found a purpose and a place for her achy-voiced folk songs. With a little encouragement from her longtime lead guitarist, who saw how powerful her presence (and her songs) could be on stage, an openly reticent Shook took the leap and started playing professionally in 2013. She gained national attention with her stellar back-to-back albums Sidelong and Years - which caught the attention of famed outlaw country label Bloodshot Records (they signed her) and sent her on a relentless round of touring around the world. With confessional, lived-in songs like “Fuck Up” and “New Ways To Fail” Sarah is a master of getting to the point - processing her tough transition to sobriety with grace, humor and wit, and much like her hero Johnny Cash, she suffers no fools when it comes to love and its tricky late-night detours. With her signature half-smile, half-grimace candor Shook sings about another love affair gone wrong: “I need this shit like I need another hole in my head.” Stick around to the end of the episode to hear a live-from-home acoustic rendition of her deliciously twangy kiss-off “Gold As Gold.”
I was super late getting this one out, so everyone gets to hear the Patreon songs! Also, found poetry! Album of the Week: Lydia Loveless -- Daughter Daughter finds Americana stalwart Loveless at the ebb of significant upheaval: a divorce, a relocation, a cathartic but tumultuous outing of bad practices at her previous label, Bloodshot Records, the reverberations of which are still being felt three years later. But all of that has led to one thing: out with the bad, and in with the good. On Daughter, Loveless is searching for answers amidst a way forward. She’s continuing to explore that sort of disco pop that’s marked her last few releases, though that sense of freedom has also drawn her to explore some back-to-basics Americana with much more sure-footed songwriting. It’s still a Lydia Loveless album, after all, and there are plenty of albums to cry, sip, or smoke along to: whatever it is that helps you feel washed clean after a good bout of searching the bottom of your soul. Johanna Rose -- “A Nite Like This” AND “Only Good” (Only Good Nites) Concetta Abate -- “A Bit of Rain” (Mirror Touch) Lydia Luce -- “Dark River” (Single) Lydia Loveless -- “Wringer” AND “Daughter” (Daughter) Emily Zuzik -- “Stay Wild” AND “Chinese Food and Donuts” (Torch & Trouble)) Phillipa Cookman -- “Greasy Mabel” (Single) Girls on Grass -- “Spill Your Guts” (Spill Your Guts/Who’s Gonna Cry? 7”) Al Holbrook -- “Guru Lover Star” (Rocket Ships For Dreamers) Bonnie Whitmore -- “Fine” AND “Flashes & Cables” (Last Will & Testament) Bison Bone -- “Downtown” AND “Drinking To Do” (Find Your Way Out) Mike West -- “Rock Ferry” (The Next Life) Jensen Sisters -- “Beat of a Bad Habit” AND “On the Fringe” (Yellow Shades) Brendan and the Strangest Ways -- “Anxiety” (Single) Olivia Ellen Lloyd -- “Emily” (Single) Bette Smith -- “I Felt It” (The Good, The Bad, The Bette) Send me music via SubmitHub! Robbie Fulks is a sort of latter-day Renaissance Man. After spending his formative years in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Virginia, Fulks eventually settled in Chicago - where his fresh take on American roots music established his status as one of the progenitors of what would become the alt-country genre. Fulks' fearless and uncompromising approach to his art is exemplified by a longtime association with insurgent country record label Bloodshot Records and a friendly working relationship with firebrand Chicago-based producer and engineer Steve Albini. In the last twenty-plus years, Fulks has released thirteen albums of his own, as well as accompanied numerous other artists both onstage and in the studio. Fulks is also known as a music journalist, having penned a blog and had his writing published in GQ, Blender, Chicago Reader and elsewhere. When he wasn't playing, recording, or writing, Fulks has hosted an XM satellite radio interview and performance program and spent twelve years teaching at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. But it is Fulks' whip-smart songwriting, high lonesome Buddy Miller-esque vocals, and facile and inventive guitar work that first earned him fans in Chicago's underground country music scene, and it's what keeps them coming back to shows across the country.
Episode 8 of The Jukebox Graduate brings the blabby boys to The Sharktank in Los Angeles for a very special in-studio session with Bloodshot Records recording artist Ruby Boots. Things kick off with a quick recap of Eugene's tales from the road, Dave's Record Store Day triumphs, as well as the latest happenings in the world of Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls. Then, the mesmerizing Ruby Boots (one of Rolling Stone magazine's "10 New Country Artsits That You Need To Know”) drops in for a deep discussion on her latest album, Don't Talk About It. We quickly learn about her beginnings in Perth, Australia, her journey to Nashville, and how the new record came to be. Finally, things wouldn't be complete without an exclusive live in-studio performance, and of course... a surreal Bill Murray story that no one would ever believe. This episode of The Jukebox Graduate was brought to you by Satellite Amplifiers with thanks to Luke Adams, AMPED Distribution and Bloodshot Records.
Welcome to the extra-tangenty 51st episode anniversary of the Department of Tangents Podcast, my interview with inventor and Information Philosopher Dr. Robert Doyle, with new music from Ruby Boots. This interview came about it a strange way. For years I have been trying to explain to people my favorite board game as a kid, Stop Thief. It had a regular cardboard square with a cartoon grid on it, and your job was to find the thief, who was still actively moving around the different stores and the outside on the street. What was different about Stop Thief was that it had a handheld scanner giving you audio clues – footsteps, doors opening, shattering glass, street noises. It was a lot of fun, and I've always been on the lookout for it at thrift stores. This Christmas, my wife Melissa gave me an updated version of the game released last year by Restoration Games who did a top flight job of it. The game included a quick history and mentioned that its creator, Dr. Robert Doyle, lived in Massachusetts. I got in touch with Restoration Games, and they put me in touch with Dr. Doyle, who, as it turns out, lives in the same house he has lived in since 1970, and it is stuffed with wonderful books and every new bit of communication technology you can imagine, including a bunch of games he designed that were never released, like a handheld flight simulator, and the “suitcase computers” that contained the original electronics for Stop Thief and other games. That would have been fascinating enough on its own. What I didn't know when I initially contacted Dr. Doyle was just how accomplished he is and in just how many fields. We start the interview going through the cliff notes of that history – PhD in Astrophysics from Harvard and consulting on the space program before helping to simplify editing for Super 8, then on to Parker Brothers where he invented Stop Thief and, the one many of my friends were excited about, Merlin. Then he created MacPublisher, the first desktop publishing program, to bring publishing to the masses. And there might not even be a Department of Tangents Podcast if Doyle hadn't worked with Christopher Lydon in 2003 to bring radio to the Web in a form that would eventually become known as podcasting. To top it of, he is what he calls an Information Philosopher, and a strong advocate for the existence of free will. If you want to follow up on what Dr. Doyle is doing now, his books and lecture series, you can find that at www.informationphilosopher.com. Our featured track for this episode comes from rocking singer/songwriter Ruby Boots. It's called "It's So Cruel," and it's from her second album, and first for Bloodshot Records, Don't Talk About It. She's got a great, tough rock and roll sound and I'm looking forward to hearing more from her, and to seeing her live if she comes through Boston. You can find out more about her at www.RubyBootsMusic.com.
Tawny Newsome joins the show we talk about Vacaville, The Second City, Bloodshot Records, and more.
