Janelle Brown is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels I'll Be You, Pretty Things, Watch Me Disappear, All We Ever Wanted Was Everything, and This Is Where We Live. Pretty Things—named a Best Book of 2020 by Amazon—is currently being adapted for television. Before becoming a novelist, Janelle worked as a senior writer at Salon, and began her career as a staff writer at Wired, working on seminal Web sites like HotWired and Wired News. In the 1990s, she was also the editor and co-founder of Maxi, an irreverent (and now, long-gone) women's pop culture Webzine. All that information becomes very relevant when you read her latest, What Kind of Paradise. She joins Marrie Stone to talk about it. What Kind of Paradise draws on that tech reporter past and subtly asks the question: What if Ted Kazinsky had a kid? They discuss how fiction, and our bestselling authors, are grappling with this technological moment. They also discuss writing in the first person and how to use other textures and devices to gain access to other major characters, capturing bygone time periods, conveying cultural messages without preaching to your readers, and much more. For more information on Writers on Writing and to become a supporter, visit our Patreon page. For a one-time donation, visit Ko-fi. You can find hundreds of past interviews on our website. You can help out the show and indie bookstores by buying books at our bookstore on bookshop.org. It's stocked with titles by our guest authors, as well as our personal favorites. [13x3] It's time for another Hammer horror, and after completing the Karnstein trilogy we rewind the clock back to 1963 for Don Sharp's Kiss of the Vampire, which finds a newlywed couple encountering a vampire secret society while on their honeymoon... And we have a new guest arriving by podcasket to help us bite into this classic, in the shape of film critic Kristin Battestella... Hosts: Dan Owen & Hugh McStay Guest: Kristin Battestella Editor: Hugh McStay "When the devil attacks a man or woman with this foul disease of the vampire the unfortunate human being can do one of two things. Either he can seek God through the church and pray for absolution or he can persuade himself that his filthy perversion is some kind of new and wonderful experience to be shared by the favoured few. Then he tries to persuade others to join his new cult." --- Professor Zimmer. Enjoying what you hear? Please subscribe, leave a rating, or write a review to help us keep bringing you great content! Have you ever known Daryl Dixon to run away from a fight? Maybe it's because, before this mess, it's what he did all the time. And he wants to go back to the only real home he's ever known. Poor timing since Carol Peletier seems to be growing roots. Will these two ever find a happy ending?

"Aberdeen Calling!" On 10 October 1923, the BBC opened its seventh station: 2BD Aberdeen. Its station director R.E. Jeffrey was fresh from the success of Rob Roy - a drama he'd produced and starred in - and in later years he'd head up BBC drama, with contributions arguably including radio's first sci-fi and first sitcom (not at the same time - Red Dwarf was a while away yet). Our experts include author Gordon Bathgate (whose book Aberdeen Calling is recommended - link below)... academic Dr Aleksandar Kocic of Edinburgh Napier University on why the BBC doesn't really do local radio in Scotland... plus notes from Prof Tim Crook on R.E. Jeffrey's later career... and much more. We recreate for you Aberdeen's opening night - hear the songs and some of the voices. We look at the challenges of the weather, and the shrinking nature of BBC local radio - both in 1923 and in 2025. Thoughts on any of this? Email me: paul at paulkerensa dot com. And see the below links for more on this marvellous tale... SHOWNOTES: Original music is by Will Farmer. So we've gone from a hospital into the Doctor's brain. What knowledge can be found in there? The best way to the nearest pub? Probably - but all that and more as there's a battle going on outside too. Not to mention this podcast, which is about a meeting of minds and seeing if everyone is on the same wavelength. Is that the case this time? Or will the points go to our guest, Iain Key, writer of a new book about The Clash. #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. Good communication isn't optional—it's essential for patient care. In Part 1 of this two-part series, Dr. Erin McCreary and Dr. Hannah Creager join Luis to talk about how microbiology labs and antimicrobial stewardship teams can collaborate more effectively. They share real-world examples from their system-wide work—aligning AST panels and breakpoints across multiple platforms, navigating reporting challenges like the clindamycin D-test and rifampin comments, and building consistent communication through monthly micro–stewardship meetings. It's a behind-the-scenes look at how strong collaboration turns into better patient outcomes. Stay connected with Let's Talk Micro: Website: letstalkmicro.com Questions or feedback?
