Walking sims used to get the brunt of this, but the same could also be said for games like Sword of the Sea director Matt Nava's most famous works, Journey and Abzu. We've been following A. Muia and her writing journey for several years. She's been a longtime listener of the podcast and supporter of the show. We chatted in 2022 about getting an agent, the frustrations of the publishing industry and how to break into it, and all the things talented writers who have a strong manuscript but few publishing contacts encounter when trying to get their work published. Basically, most of us. A Desert Between Two Seas published in September. It's a novel told in 14 linked stories set in 19th century Baja California, Mexico. It won the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction and, as a result, was published by the University of Georgia Press. It was also a finalist for the Iowa Short Fiction Award and is a 2026 Top Pick for the Southwest Books of the Year. All this, ultimately, was done without an agent. She joined me on the podcast to talk about all this because I find her experience so relatable. It gave us much to talk about in terms of selling a book without an agent, the experience of publishing with a university press, winning literary prizes, marketing your work, what she wishes she knew then that she knows now, how she'll approach her next project, and much more. We also talked about publishing in literary journals and how she targeted the literary journals she did, as well as the most useful writing advice she's received. SYNOPSIS:The lines often get blurred in Moonlighting, and this is one example. David is still in prison, and nobody knows where he is. It's not only his friends who are wondering where he is; it's also network executives. They seek the services of a fortune teller, who uses a crystal ball in an attempt to locate David, but all she sees are bars. Following this, they begin auditioning to find a replacement. We begin to see the auditions, with men in line all dressed up in various outfits that David wore in previous episodes. David is released from solitary confinement and placed in a work gang, where his fellow convicts advise him to marry Maddie. Bert is using his new, temporary title of Blue Moon supervisor, awarded to him by David, to put the employees in line. David witnesses illegal activities by a prison guard, who is about to kill him, but fortunately, a riot starts, allowing David to escape unnoticed. Agnes and Bert decide to start investigating the whereabouts of “Mr. Addison.” The episode features a lengthy musical number performed by the prisoners in the style of "When I Was a Lad" from Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S.
