Theodore Roosevelt was both a New Yorker and an outdoorsman, a politician and a naturalist, a conservationist and a hunter. His connection with the natural world began at birth in his Manhattan brownstone home and ended with his death in Sagamore Hill.He killed thousands of animals over his lifetime as a hunter-naturalist, most notably one of the last roaming bison (or American buffalo) in the Dakota Badlands. Many of his trophies hang on the walls of his home in Long Island; other specimens "live on" in institutions such as the American Museum of Natural History. But as this episode's special guest Ken Burns reveals in his newest mini-series The American Buffalo, Roosevelt's relationship with the animal world was complicated and, in certain ways, hard to understand today. As one of America's great conservationists, President Roosevelt's advocacy for wildlife and public land helped to preserve so much of the natural richness of the United States. And his involvement in the creation of the New York Zoological Society (aka the Bronx Zoo) would set the stage for one ambitious project that would help bring the American buffalo back to the Midwestern plains. This episode marks the 165th anniversary of Roosevelt's birth in October and the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site (which plays a small but important role in today's story. )Visit the website for more information and images from this week's show. This show was engineered by Casey Holford at Stitcher Studios and the interview edited by Kieran Gannon.

To kick off the show, Blake Murphy opens the show with a recap of last night's Major League Baseball action, sans the idle Blue Jays. Following this, he is joined by Buffalo Bisons Manager, Casey Candaele to get his measure on the team's 2023 season, including how he managed regularly losing a glut of talent due to call-ups during the year, including Davis Schneider, Spencer Horwitz and Nathen Lukes. They close the segment with a discussion on the merits and drawbacks to the use of the automatic strike zone. In the second half of the hour, Blake is joined by Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher, José Berríos, who connected with him at his charity event in Toronto. Their conversation spans various topics, including Berríos' personal journey growing up playing baseball in Puerto Rico, the recent performance of the Blue Jays, and his La Gente del Barrio Home Run Derby and Celebrity Softball Game scheduled for December (30:57). During the final hour, Sportsnet Producer Chris Black makes an in-studio appearance for an extended discussion. They dive into the analytics behind the Blue Jays' recent run, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s impressive turnaround in September, the concerns about his injured knee, potential lineup changes pending Brandon Belt's return, and the discourse behind Jordan Romano's finger-related issues (50:07). 51: Can eating organ meats help prevent cancer or other diseases? Getting past the ICK FACTOR with celebrity chef, James Barry. Did you know that eating organs can be good for you? PLEASE KEEP READING! Trust me, I get it. When people mentioned eating organ meat, I had flashbacks to my childhood and my grandma making liver and onions. Believe me when I say it wasn't a positive experience. Humans have eaten organ meats since prehistoric times, and they're rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids – including some that aren't commonly found in plant foods. Today's podcast guest is James Barry, celebrity chef to George Clooney and Barbra Streisand (to namedrop a bit). James knows the power of eating organ meats but he also understands the ICK FACTOR. That's why he created a super yummy way to include organ meats in your daily diet by using salt! He created a savory salt (to me it tastes like a healthy version of Lowery's season salt), and I use it on eggs, salads, and popcorn. Listen to today's podcast to get the inside scoop on WHY organ meats are so important to consume and DID James cook organ meats for George Clooney. James Barry's 16 + years in the culinary field started as a private chef cooking for celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Mariska Hargitay, George Clooney, Gerard Butler, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Barbra Streisand, and John Cusack. Most recently, James launched his first functional food product, Pluck, an organ-based seasoning. It's the first of its kind and an amazingly easy and delicious way for people to get organ meats into their diet. Follow James Barry on Instagram (@chefjamesbarry), and add more organ meat into your diet with Pluck! This episode is sponsored in part by ButcherBox. I love using Bison! It's very nutrient dense and contains conjugated linoleic acid (I know, what the heck does that mean?), which means Bison has anti-inflammatory properties. Here are the other reasons why I love using Bison in place of ground beef: Higher amounts of omega three fatty acids. More b12, zinc, iron, and selenium than beef. Some studies show it's got four times the vitamin E compared to beef. Lower in calories and cholesterol. It is lower fat, so it will cook faster than ground beef. My friends at BB are offering a deal that they've never offered to anyone! I had to say "pretty please" a couple of times, and guess what? It worked! I can't tell you how long they will offer this deal to me, but here it is:

In the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, an historically large bison herd is hampering the comeback of quaking aspen trees, whose numbers were greatly diminished by decades of over-browsing by elk. Restoring the balance of ecosystems at Yellowstone is proving to be a complicated matter. Long ago, the bison population in the Great Plains […]

Tune in here to this Tuesday edition of The Brett Winterble Show! Brett tells the story of a visitor to Yellowstone National Park who got themselves into a bad situation after breaking park rules and approaching a Bison while at the park. Brett talks about why he thinks Bison are some of the coolest animals in the world + shares details about why it is such a bad idea not to give them space when visiting the park as well as how the Bison was also likely indicating it was about to charge. Brett starts off the second hour of the show talking about the importance of resilience and self reliance in our society + ways he sees to make sure we develop those traits. We're also joined by Beth Troutman from Good Morning BT for Crossing the Streams to talk about the days getting shorter and Beth explains why it actually helps for her schedule + the F-35 that went missing. North Dakota State wraps up non-conference play Saturday at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome as they host Central Arkansas out of the United Athletic Conference. UCA enters with a record of 1-1, losing to Oklahoma State in its season opener, before beating Texas College, an NAIA school, 70-2 last week. This is the second all-time meeting between the schools, the two teams met in October 2020 in Fargo. That was Trey Lance's final game as a Bison, rallying NDSU in the fourth quarter to a 39-28 win. There was less than 500 people in attendance as the game was held in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Forum's Jeff Kolpack and WDAY's Dom Izzo discuss the matchup and why Central Arkansas poses a real challenge to a 19-year non-conference home win streak that the Bison currently have.

Here are some of my favorite tips that I do daily to create more peace in my life (all of my tips received a big thumbs up from Dr. J!). I've worked hard to surround myself with encouraging and kind people. I've also canceled our television cable, which allows me to choose how and when I hear the news. I had to recognize what I could control to guard my peace. What I can control today: What I'm hearing. What I'm eating and drinking. How did I respond to negative situations or people? My attitude. That. Is. It. Once I realized that I could control these things and only these things (newsflash, I had to learn I couldn't control people), my stress levels started to change, and I found my joy returning. Here's the daily ritual I do to protect my peace: I start my day with a glass of water while I look out my window and not at my PHONE. I make a cup of coffee and walk outside, rain or shine, and look toward the sun, not at the sun as that can damage your eyes. I return inside and read my Bible and write in my gratitude journal. I take five deep breaths and do a little bit of stretching at the top of every hour. Dr. Jantz is the founder of The Center A Place of HOPE in Edmonds, Washington, voted a Top Ten facility for Depression Treatment in the United States. Dr. Jantz pioneered Whole Person Care in the 1980s and is a world-renowned expert on depression, anxiety, eating disorders, technology addiction, and abuse. Dr. Jantz is a best-selling author of 40 books and a go-to media authority on mental and behavioral health afflictions, appearing on CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, and CNN.

The 2023 FCS college football season will be the last without Missouri Valley Football Conference games featured on linear television. The league announced a couple weeks ago a new television contract with ESPN, a six-year deal that will see the network broadcast one to two games a year on either ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU. It's a landmark deal for the conference, which has never had regular season games on linear TV. The new deal calls for the extension of the Missouri Valley Game of the Week on ESPN Plus, a deal that has been around for the last eight years, where one game is selected for an exclusive broadcast. Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Patty Viverito and ESPN's senior director of programming Dan Margulis join the podcast to discuss the two sides of how this deal came together and what it means for local broadcasters like WDAY-TV. You can find past episodes at Apple Itunes, Spotify and Google Play.

“But the years of peace and plenty was not to last. Slowly the days turned sour and the watchful nights closed in. Thrór's love of gold grown too fierce and sickness had begun to grow within him. It was a sickness of the mind. And where sickness thrives, bad things will follow...” — JRR Tolkien “The more White investigated the flow of oil money from Osage headrights, the more he found layer upon layer of corruption. Although some white guardians and administrators tried to act in the best interests of the tribe, countless others used the system to swindle the very people they were ostensibly protecting. Many guardians would purchase, for their wards, goods from their own stores or inventories at inflated prices.” — David Grann You may have heard of Killers of the Flower Moon, a new movie by Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Or, maybe you have heard of the best-selling book by David Grann, on which the movie is based. In this episode, I do a deep dive into the murders at the root of the story. Back in the late 1800s, the Osage tribe was kicked out of their homes and pushed onto a plot of poor land where few people wanted to live. But the Universe has a sense of humor. Fast-forward a few years, and in a surprising twist of events it is discovered their land is not so poor after all, since it sits on some of the largest oil deposits in United States. Overnight, the Osage go from the deepest poverty to extreme wealth. A happy, feel-good story then, right? Not so fast. By the early 1920s, many Osage die in the prime of their lives—some are mysterious deaths. Others are clearly murders by poison, shooting and explosives. In this tale, I'll tell you about oil, greed, murder mysteries, the birth of the FBI, and much more! Bison have been in the news recently. The Interior Department this past week released $5 million to help fund both bison restoration and grasslands rehabilitation. And next month Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan will release their latest documentary, The American Buffalo. The American Buffalo documentary traces the history of how bison nearly went extinct, and how they came back. It will be delivered in a two-part, four-hour series on public television. Earlier this summer I talked to Dayton Duncan about the project, and we're rerunning that conversation to remind you of the documentary that is set to debut on October 16.
A fascinating conversation with Dr. Oakley about her incredibly unique Vet practice. Michele is very open and fun about the challenges of treating a wide variety of animals, the mistakes she's made in the wild (like the time she got chased up a tree by Bison she was treating), and how having her kids in the wild with her is the ULTIMATE "Bring Your Child To Work Day" experience. Michele gets emotional about a chance meeting when she was a child with Jane Goodall that changed her life. Dr. Oakley is doing important work and gives us a unique behind-the-scenes look at her practice, shooting her show, much more.
North Dakota State returns to Gate City Bank Field this weekend for its home opener as the Bison will host Maine for the first-ever meeting between the schools. The Black Bears enter off a 14-12 loss to Florida International last week. They were a preseason pick of 13th out of 15 teams in the Coastal Athletic Assocation. The Bison come in after a 35-10 win over Eastern Washington at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis last Saturday. Cam Miller threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the victory. NDSU holds an 8-1 all-time record against CAA teams, the only loss was to former league member James Madison in the 2016 FCS semifinals. The Forum's Jeff Kolpack and WDAY's Dom Izzo break down the game and look to other matchups across the FCS in this week's show.

50: If Your Mom Had Breast Cancer, Does that Mean You Will Too? A Candid Conversation with a Genetic Cancer Prevention Coach. This is a topic I don't know much about, so I was looking forward to interviewing Cancer Prevention Coach and nurse, Krista. Krista's focus is on genetic testing because she's tested positive for a strong breast cancer gene, and she believes it's the same gene that caused her mother's breast cancer. I've always wondered: if a close relative had cancer does that mean I will get it too? What can you do to prevent cancer if it's a big part of your family history? How “close” does the relative with cancer have to be to increase your own risk? Are there tests that you can take to see if you have strong cancer genes? Krista answered all these questions and so many more. This is a tough topic, and I'll be honest a little scary when you think about getting tested to see if you have a higher likelihood of cancer. But Krista is very clear that knowledge is power, and it's better to understand the risks in your genetics so you can take action to lower your risk. We had an enlightening conversation about stress and its link to cancer. We are both in agreement that organic is best when it comes to produce, but we also understand that it can also be very expensive. We discussed some unique ways to eat organic produce (she suggests eating 8-10 servings per day) without blowing your food budget. Krista, BSN, RN, combines her diverse training in traditional medicine, integrative oncology, and functional nutrition to her work with patients at high risk of cancer due to inherited genetic mutations and/or family history. She is currently finishing her Master's degree at Arizona state University as part of the first Medical Nutrition program in the country. Her focus is nutrigenomics and personalized cancer prevention. She has training through Harvard Medical School in cancer genomics, precision oncology, and immuno-oncology. Krista truly believes knowledge is power, and considers herself a life-long learner. Her passion for prevention began amidst her mother's 12+ year battle with breast cancer which was caused by a genetic mutation. Krista, who is also a carrier of this mutation, has since dedicated her career to educating herself about cancer and showing others how to decrease risk as much as possible. She wants others to understand that genetics is just a small piece of the puzzle, and that their DNA is not their destiny. She owns a private nutrition practice in which she works closely with patients to create individualized prevention plans, and offers various courses throughout the year. Her goal is to empower patients with integrative nutrition and lifestyle modifications and teach them how to “fill their plates, and their lives, with purpose.” To learn more about upcoming classes Krista will be offering, you can follow her on Instagram (@cancer.prevention.coach) This episode is sponsored in part by ButcherBox. There is no shortage of knowledge within the bison industry and this episode is dedicated to sharing. Doc Gerald Parsons joins the program to discuss his time spent as both rancher and veterinarian. Matt Skoglund of North Bridger Bison speaks about his experience taking a non-traditional approach to starting a ranch. Jud Seaman of Quality Auction Services breaks down the latest USDA bison meat reports.
For over 10,000 years, many peoples in what's now known as North America relied on bison. Thirty million of these creatures stretched from modern Canada all the way down to Mexico. But in the late 1800s hide-hunters and the U.S. military annihilated the bison, bringing them to the brink of extinction. And that had consequences for the people who relied on the bison. Consequences that we still see today.Today, we hear from an economist who revealed the shocking numbers telling this story, and one member of the Blackfeet Nation who is trying to bring back the bison. For sponsor-free episodes of The Indicator from Planet Money, subscribe to Planet Money+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.
