At the end of 2021 Rinuwat released their album Dua Naga. The music was challenging. It harmonised the sounds of modern metal with the scales and rhythms of traditional Indonesian music and instruments. "We just really wanted to make something that we were excited about," enthused Karina Utomo, vocalist for Melbourne's High Tension when asked about the bands recently released third album 'Purge'. "We wanted to make something really brutal and I guess we wanted to do it our own way. I feel really authentic about the songs and the process and the way things came together and if I'm talking about it from a personal sense... we're stoked (laughs)."The press release for the album quotes Utomo as saying "this is the center of my repressed rage", a quote that she elaborates on when pressed."I guess... a few things," she measured. "I think in order to sing in that style it has to come from a very authentic place and for me, that's what that was about. I think that there was such a process of writing to the music and mapping out which direction we wanted to go and it was going in a heavier realm so the references of these songs also had to come from a place that insighted real rage. If someone asks you if you've seen High Tension, chances are they're not talking about the brutal horror movie from 2003, but more so the brutal, heavy band from Melbourne featuring frontwoman Karina Utomo who we have been huuuge supporters of since first coming across the band back in 2015 at the annual Big Sound conference. Since then, the band has gone on to support for Cancer Bats, they've played at Splendour in the Grass and even opened the main stage at Australia's first ever Download Festival, so it's safe to say the future of heavy music in Australia is on good hands with this foursome. Podcast host Browny spoke with the singer ahead of the release of the band's new album Purge (out Friday) to find out more about the inspiration behind the record, which was conceived after conversations with locals who were unfortunately involved or experienced the Anti-Communist Purges of Indonesia back in the 1960's. Karina explains the struggles she faced when researching the stories, which in turn, became songs on the record and what she hopes fans of the band will take from her story re-telling through the band's music. Karina Utomo of Melbourne heavy band High Tension talks about the creative process behind their killer video "Bully", touring with King Parrot, learning to play music, discovering punk rock, the transformative impact of Canberra hardcore that transcends the language barrier, their third album, the warfare of being a woman, becoming stronger together, and lots more.

This is a very special episode for us as it features songs from Jess Locke, High Tension, Smith Street Band, during the legendary ‘Gig of The Century’ fundraising show for the #keepcommunityradio movement that took place at Crowbar in Brisbane on the 5th of June, 2016. a very big thank you for everybody who got involved in this show. The bands who dedicated their time, the venue who dedicated their business, and the patrons who donated their money. As you may be aware, The Federal Budget contains cuts of $1.4 million p.a., funding that currently keeps community radio stations like this one, broadcasting on digital radio in 5 capital cities. The good guys at The Smith Street Band helped organise this fundraising event and implemented a ‘pay what you feel’ payment model at the door, with all proceeds going to community radio. They managed to raise $3,500 on the day, and more importantly highlighted an important issue in our industry. The Smith Street Band: In only 5 years of existence The Smith Street Band have made a tremendous impact on the Australian music scene by revitalising the long forgotten genre that is a staple of our cultural identity; Pub Rock. Their raw punk rock sound with intelligent lyricism delivered in vocalist Wil Wagner's instantly recognisable, prominent and sharp Australian tone have made The Smith Street Band our new Pub Rock icons. High Tension: Coming from Collingwood in Victoria, High Tension are a brutal four piece that have been hitting it hard since their beginning in 2012. Fronted by the outright terrifying Jakarta born Karina Utomo, High tension will leave you in a dizzying state of disaster which is amplified ten fold during their live performances. Sounding like they’ve taken an influence from every possible style of heavy music and fused it together to make High Tension stand out in their own. They’ve released two albums so far through the Cooking Vinyl label, 2013’s ‘Death Beat’ and 2015’s ‘Bully’, both of which have received critical acclaim including ARIA award nominations, flawless reviews from music publications, and even the tick of approval from master of hardcore himself, Henry Rollins. The powerful thud behind the drum kit, with pounding fuzzed out bass lines, sharp erratic guitar, and the unpredictable howls, screams and slurs on the vocals make High Tension a band worth checking out. Jess Locke Band: Starting off as a solo project in 2009 and consisting of only her voice and acoustic guitar, Jess Locke recorded her first album ‘In the Bedroom’ literally in her bedroom, true DIY style. Over the years since, she has released another four DIY acoustic albums as well as a live album from The Old Bar in Melbourne. But in 2014 Jess decided to switch up her playing styles and bring in a few other elements like drums, percussion, bass, ukulele and even some good ol electric guitar. The lo-fi sounds of her DIY recordings, simple and effective melodies and blissful delivery of her sad girl lyricism create a powerful sound of her own that makes for very comfortable listening. Her latest track ‘Paper Planes’ was released at the start of June and is the first taste of her next album due for recording later in the year.
