For too long now, parents have had trouble convincing their children that rock and metal are the way to go, not pop and the likes. It is a never ending battle of guidance, but one that is generally destined to failure from the outset. Parents the world over have agonised on how to introduce decent music to their children's lives, and now, thanks to a new band emerging from the US, their prayers may have been answered.By converting Disney classic tunes to the dark side, Metal Mouse are using already known and loved songs for children to their advantage by adding a touch of metal madness to songs from family films such as The Little Mermaid, Frozen and The Lion King. It is an ingenious idea that is sure to at least appeal to the next generation of music lovers.Fronted by American Idol alum James Durbin, Metal Mouse taps into Disney nostalgia with the flair and theatrics of glam rock. What began as a “what-if” idea has struck a chord, especially with millennial women who grew up on Disney - and men who never gave up on hair metal.Durbin and band creator/manager Alex Pels sat down with HEAVY to discuss this exciting new creation and how Metal Mouse plans to convert as many youngsters as possible to real music."We're trying to make the connection between heavy and Disney," Pels explained. "James and I both love metal. We're both involved with tons of other metal kinds of music, but we realised that the Disney songs - in addition to being excellently written by great songwriters - the themes and the chord progressions and everything else lend themselves to a heavy architecture."It's such a simple idea, but one which has never been tried on this scale before."I've been doing a lot of heavy metal in the last five or six… even longer than that, eight years," Durbin relayed. "I was with Quiet Riot for a couple of years and have put out a couple of heavy metal albums over the last few years with different projects. So, metal has been seeping through my system. It's difficult, because sometimes there can be such a thing as too much metal - a metal overload - and metal isn't widely accepted by everybody, but here's a perfect way to make it accessible to people. With songs that are already known mixed with the classic 80s music and hair of the day, mixed with this beautifully arranged music… it's a blessing."In the full interview we discuss the genesis of Metal Mouse, how easy Disney songs convert to metal, the selection process for songs, the live show and what it looks and sounds like, future plans for Metal Mouse and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
The Dandy Warhols formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994, born from the city's gritty alternative scene. Fronted by the charismatic and sardonic Courtney Taylor-Taylor, the band initially carved out a niche with a sound that merged psychedelic rock, shoegaze textures, and garage grit. Their name, a clever play on pop artist Andy Warhol, reflected their art-house attitude and offbeat sensibility right from the start. The band's 1995 debut Dandys Rule OK was released on the indie label Tim/Kerr Records and earned them a deal with Capitol Records. It wasn't until their third album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia (2000), that they broke through internationally—led by the iconic single “Bohemian Like You.” The song's catchy riff and slacker spirit captured a moment, helped along by a high-profile feature in a Vodafone ad, which made it an anthem of early-2000s alt culture.Known as much for their aesthetic and attitude as their music, The Dandy Warhols often played with the line between satire and sincerity. Their early 2000s feud/friendship with Brian Jonestown Massacre—documented in the acclaimed film Dig!—added to their mythos, painting them as the more commercially savvy counterparts in a tale of two brilliant but volatile bands.Despite ups and downs with labels and shifting public tastes, the Dandys have remained prolific. Their sound evolved over time, incorporating synth-pop, glam, and even industrial influences, while keeping that core fuzzed-out irreverence intact. Albums like Welcome to the Monkey House (2003) and Distortland (2016) showed their willingness to shift gears while poking fun at pop culture and themselves.Still active today, The Dandy Warhols continue to tour and release new material, including 2024's “Rockmaker”—a return to heavy grooves and wry commentary. Whether you're revisiting their hits or diving into deeper cuts, the Dandys remain a band that defies easy categorization, staying true to their motto: “It's not about being famous, it's about being cool.”Official Links:
(S4 Ep 20) Love -Forever Changes (Electra)Released Nov 1967- Recorded June 9-Sept 25 1967 Love's Forever Changes, released in 1967, is a psychedelic rock masterpiece and one of the most hauntingly beautiful albums of its era. Fronted by Arthur Lee, Love was a groundbreaking, racially integrated band that fused folk-rock, orchestral pop, and surreal lyricism. Though not a commercial hit at the time, Forever Changes later earned acclaim for its lush arrangements, introspective themes, and emotional depth. Songs like “Alone Again Or” and “You Set the Scene” highlight the album's fusion of poetic melancholy and orchestral grandeur. Recorded during a period of personal turmoil and cultural upheaval, it captures both the hope and anxiety of the late 1960s. Internal conflicts and drug use soon fractured the band, but the album's legacy endured, eventually earning recognition from the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress. Forever Changes stands as a timeless artistic statement and a high point of the psychedelic era.Signature Songs Alone Again Or “Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale”. Heeding the call for their first odyssey to Australia and handed the highly important task of hyping up the party hungry, NEKROGOBLIKON - the self-proclaimed Kings of Goblin Metal - promise to deliver a unique blend of melodic rock and gnarly death metal, infused with EDM-style flourishes when they arrive here for a run of shows with Alestorm towards the end of February.Fronted by their ostentatious singing goblin hypeman John Goblikon and new screaming vocalist Dickie Allen (Infant Annihilator) the band takes cues from GWAR, Finntroll, and Dethklok, while maintaining a humorous, self-referential style. For those unfamiliar with Nekrogoblikon unfortunately there isn't much HEAVY can do to help you understand the band on a more personal level, but the next best thing is to introduce the faithful and the new to guitarist Alex Alereza who we spoke with over two conversations about three weeks apart…We put Alex straight on the spot by asking how Nekrogoblikon have managed to avoid Australia for so long."It's not on purpose, I promise that," he laughed. "We've been talking about it forever, and it's been something that we tried to make happen. There's been a few times there were tentative plans and then some kind of logistical nightmare occurred or something. Luckily this time we finally… our team was persistent this time (laughs). Like, we have to get you guys out there. It's the perfect way for us to do Australia for the first time, with another like-minded, fun band. I already feel like we'll be coming back more often after this."In the full interview we spoke about the touring dynamics between Nekrogoblikon and Alestorm, what he is expecting from Australian crowds, the importance of keeping music fun, the role of their resident Goblin in everything from the live show to production to recording, the modern sanitized musical climate and where Nekrogoblikon sit in that respect, their musical mish mash of genres and why it works, new music and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Television came out of the CBGB's scene in New York (in fact, they were the first rock band to play the legendary club), but they never fit the "Punk" or "New Wave" label. They were unique, which is why their debut album Marquee Moon sounds timeless, as fresh today as the day it was released in 1977. Fronted by two great guitarists-- the mercurial Richard Lloyd and the enigmatic Tom Verlaine, who also provided unorthodox vocals and most of the songwriting-- Television would influence generations of bands that followed. Though they never achieved commercial success, Marquee Moon regularly appears on virtually every "Greatest Albums Of All Time" list. On this episode, we explore the track that opens the album, "See No Evil". "See No Evil" (Verlaine) Copyright 1977 Double Exposure Music Ltd. ASCAP Learn more about your ad choices. We are joined by BAD OMENS guitarist Joakim "Jolly" Karlsson and DERISION CULT mainman Dave MCANALLY on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, BAD OMENS emerged onto the American rock scene in 2015, founded by the trio of vocalist and producer Noah Sebastian, guitarist Nicholas Ruffilo, and bassist Vincent Riquier. The band expanded its lineup with the addition of guitarist Joakim "Jolly" Karlsson and drummer Nick Folio. Their inaugural self-titled album, released in 2016 under Sumerian Records, garnered critical acclaim, setting the stage for their musical journey. BAD OMENS would continue their sonic exploration with the release of "Finding God Before God Finds Me" in 2019, accompanied by a deluxe version in 2020. The momentum surged with their third album, "The Death of Peace of Mind," unleashed in 2022. This release featured the sleeper hit "Just Pretend," marking a significant milestone in BAD OMENS' career as their biggest hit to date. In the podcast, "Jolly" discusses the band's creative process, the upcoming tour with BRING ME THE HORIZON and much more. On a contrasting note, DERISION CULT emerges as an industrial metal project hailing from Chicago, Illinois. Propelled by caustic lyrics and thrash guitars immersed in a dystopian soundscape, their albums serve as poignant reflections of contemporary societal challenges. Fronted by Dave McAnally, DERISION CULT's lyrical focus delves into themes of manipulation and media influence perpetuated upon the public. In an age where news and discourse aim more to evoke emotions than stimulate critical thinking, DERISION CULT takes a stand. Th second portion of the podcast features DERISION CULT mastermind Dave McAnally who discusses the outfit's latest LP, "Mercenary Notes Pt 1". Exploring the ongoing narrative of "Mercenary Notes Pt 1", DERISION CULT delves into the pervasive themes of overstimulation and corporate-driven manipulation within the public sphere, all aimed at boosting product sales. With an extensive background in the advertising industry, mainman Dave McAnally draws upon decades of firsthand experiences to craft a collection of tracks that serves as a survival guide for navigating the challenges of maintaining mental health in a media-saturated world intent on stirring hysteria and sensationalism among the masses. Joining forces with producer Sean Payne, who contributes the classic Glitch Mode Chicago Industrial sound to the tracks, Dave McAnally shares his vision for pushing the boundaries of production quality. "Mercenary Notes Pt 1" boasts a star-studded lineup of guest contributors, including Chris Connelly (MINISTRY, PIGFACE), Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, THE CURE), and Justin Broadrick (GODFLESH). Chris Connelly takes the lead vocals on one of the album's standout singles, "Deaf Blood," a track accompanied by an animated video crafted by Empire Animate based in Vancouver. The infusion of diverse talents further enriches DERISION CULT's sonic landscape, elevating the project to new heights within the industrial metal genre. In a musical landscape marked by both the dynamic rock soundscapes of BAD OMENS and the industrial metal resonance of DERISION CULT, these two projects offer contrasting yet equally impactful perspectives on the contemporary challenges facing society. While BAD OMENS reaches new heights with their melodic prowess, DERISION CULT digs deep into the gritty complexities of modern existence, creating a unique dichotomy within the realm of American rock and metal.

Day Soul Exquisite - clair des antilles a 2023 single on La fem records. While the pandemic was obviously a long and fraught-filled time, the bands formed and sowing their seeds during the first two most difficult years are now blossoming. Seattle-based sextet Day Soul Exquisite are one of those bands. Fronted by singer Francesca Eluhu, the group makes Latin American and French Caribbean-fused neo-soul that fits into a variety of arenas, all of which make you want to shimmy. While they've only released a string of singles since their 2021 formation, they've been mesmerizing audiences on stages and at festivals like Capitol Hill Block Party, Folklife, Barboza, The Sunset Tavern, So Dreamy Festival and more.like Our Song of the Day is the early 2023 single, “clair des antilles,” which starts with a French spoken-word introduction and bursts into a dynamic jazzy production that's a wistful ode to the French Caribbean. Eluhu describes the meaning behind the song as this: “My family is from Guadeloupe and I wrote these lyrics while reflecting on how leaning into nature can cleanse the mind of colonial rhetoric disguised as intrusive thoughts. The second verse acknowledges imperialism and calls for a redistribution of wealth: “Hear what they call me? Savage like a pirate…let me follow my instincts and I'll take back a piece of what the white man stole baby.” Bob Marley's lyrics, “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds,” is one direct influence that summarizes the message of self love in the song.” Catch Day Soul Exquisite at Timber Fest on Friday, July 28, get a sneak peek at their live stage show with a VHS-style recording of their performance at 2022's So Dreamy Festival, and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omny.fm/listener for privacy information.

Lower Park Road is a leafy residential area located in the large seaside town of Hastings in England. Fronted by the picturesque Alexandra Park, the area boasts large Victorian-era style homes, surrounded by shops and parks, a short distance from the beach. In 1997, Hastings no longer saw the volume of tourists it once did — some old empty properties had been turned into flats and hostels; others were a base for patients released under the care in the community scheme. Although some parts of the once popular resort town had been neglected, Lower Park Road remained a desirable area to live. However, residents began to raise concerns about prowlers in the area… *** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Emily G.
