Denver, Colorado punk collective Dead Pioneers return with their fierce third studio album, Wagon Burner. Set for release on 26 June 2026 via Hassle Records, the project builds upon the momentum of their 2023 self-titled debut and 2025's acclaimed PO$T AMERICAN. Fronted by Indigenous visual performance artist and activist Gregg Deal, Dead Pioneers' continue to blend the raw fury of hardcore punk with biting spoken-word commentary, channelling the contemporary Indigenous experience, historical trauma, and political resistance. While their previous work relied heavily on targeted individual statements, Wagon Burner represents a more unified, collaborative writing effort by the full band. Musically, it is their heaviest and hardest record to date, yet it remains intensely accessible, striking a delicate balance between abrasive noise-punk melee and viciously catchy hooks.HEAVY caught up with Deal to find out more, asking him how he is feeling about the album close to release date."Honestly, there's a lot of emotions," he measured. "I kind of go through peaks and valleys. I'm excited about it, and then I'm not sure. We do these releases, and sometimes they do really well. And sometimes they're not doing as well as I'd like, and so it gets in my head. I'm excited about it, but it's been a bit of a mind F."Spoken word and narrative pieces play a major role in the feel and message of the album, with Deal agreeing that there was much thought put into getting even the smallest of details correct."Yeah, I think so," he nodded. "We actually recorded so much that we have enough for another half a record. We have enough for like an EP, and so we're trying to pick and choose. We want a narrative and a sound that can live in that space. We came into this record trying to be as articulate as possible, but also not pulling any punches from everything that has been happening, everything that is happening in the United States. And so it is meant to be political, social and cultural. We're trying to find a medium in there with that, because it's a lot of heavy stuff. So the humour that has existed in other places is a little bit more subtle on this one, but it's still there. We definitely are trying to curate something that makes sense audibly and in the information that exists lyrically."In the full interview, Gregg talks more about the musical side of Wagon Burner and how it differs to Dead Pioneers' first two albums. We run through the themes that permeate through the album and their connection to Gregg personally. The constant battle against oppression in all forms is discussed, along with the impact bands such as Dead Pioneers have on the global landscape through their music. Gregg ran us through some of the spoken word pieces and elaborated on their meaning, diving deeper into the guest artists and why they were chosen.Gregg also detailed the genesis of the band and how it has evolved over the years, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Rock, metal, and high-stakes political drama collide on today's episode of the Metal Breakdown Daily with host Scott Penfold. We are breaking down the three biggest stories tearing through the heavy music community right now. In This Episode: The Poison / Freedom 250 Backlash: Poison frontman Bret Michaels shocked fans over the weekend by pulling out of Donald Trump's upcoming multi-day "Freedom 250" event in Washington, D.C. Michaels cited "unforgivable threats" against his family and crew, triggering an absolute war zone in his social media comments. We look at the massive fan pushback and why Poison bandmate Rikki Rockett had to step into the ring to fiercely defend his frontman. The Ultimate Revenge Cover Band: Puddle of Mudd is famous for its insane member turnover rate (Wikipedia lists 18 former members), largely due to Wes Scantlin's decades of erratic behavior. Now, two long-term former touring members, Matt Fuller and Dave Moreno, have joined forces to launch a tribute band called X-Mudds. Fronted by a Nirvana tribute vocalist, they are hitting the road this summer to play the songs they powered for ten years—without any of the frontman drama. Six Feet Under's New Brutalizer: Death metal icons Six Feet Under have parted ways with drummer Marco Pitruzzella and officially welcomed Ruston Grosse (ex-Master) behind the kit. Grosse is jumping straight into the fire, hitting massive European festivals like Hellfest, Graspop, and Copenhell this week before the band launches a massive North American co-headlining run with Kataklysm this fall. Interview by Kris PetersAustralia's own Rose Carleo Band returns with a bold, soul-stirring new album, 42 Days, out now. A deeply personal and sonically rich collection, this release captures the very essence of resilience, transformation, and raw human emotion.Fronted by acclaimed vocalist, songwriter, and next Queen of Rock Rose Carleo, the band has carved out a reputation for blending blues, rock, and roots with heartfelt storytelling. Joining Rose is a powerhouse line-up featuring guitarist and co-writer Mick Adkins, bassist Bill Kervin, and drummer Mick O'Shea. 42 Days marks a defining chapter, an album born from a period of intense reflection and creative rebirth.Leading the release is the focus track, 42 Days, a powerful centrepiece that encapsulates the spirit of the record. Driven by Carleo's commanding vocal performance and anchored by gritty instrumentation, the track explores endurance, healing, and the emotional weight of time. It's both deeply personal and universally relatable – a song that lingers long after the final note.HEAVY sat down with Rose Carleo to find out more, starting by asking how she is feeling with the album finally out."Over the moon," she enthused. "It's finally here. Yeah, really, really happy. It's a very personal album, as I guess all albums are, but this is especially. And we had to put it off for about six months due to some commitments I had earlier last year and here it is finally."We ask Rose to describe the album musically."It's an honest album," she replied. "It's an album full of emotion and I guess real life experience. And it's a rock and Bitchin' Blues rock album, I reckon that's sort of how we feel about it. We're not just blues, we're not just rock, we're not just heavy rock, we're a bit of everything, so we like to call it Bitchin' Blues rock."In the full interview, Rose described 42 Days as a personal record blending hard rock and blues she calls Bitchin' Blues rock, with the opening track You Ain't Foolin' Me selected for strong impact. The album was delayed about six months because of earlier commitments. Rose said the record lacks a single defining track due to its eclectic mix and that surplus recorded songs allowed careful sequencing. We spoke about Rose's appearance on The Voice and how it influenced the album, her journey through music, upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersCrispy Danger isn't just another new band. Formed in Birmingham in 2025 at the Back to the Beginning Festival, and residing in Melbourne, Crispy Danger's soul comes from a heavy metal heritage, yet their music combines riff driven rock with catchy pop sensibilities and hard hitting lyrics, carving out a genre unique to themselves.Fronted by brother/sister duo of David Rex - vocals, guitars and Michelle Maxx - bass, Crispy Danger is completed by Frankie Demuru on drums. With all three sharing a love of different musical genres the resulting sonic impact is confronting, eclectic and... fun.Their debut single Outta Control is a catchy blend of rock, metal, and dark wave, best described as “heavy metal disco”. The single features a killer bass groove, raspy spoken verses and catchy sung choruses all set to disco beats and hip-hop inspired rhythms, with Crispy Danger promising this is only the tip of the iceberg.HEAVY sat down with siblings David and Michelle to find out more."It's it's an interesting track," David measured. "We went for something a little different sounding I think to a lot of bands, going for vocals that are almost spoken, almost rapped, and then the choruses just kick out to a proper heavy metal sung chorus. It's quite catchy."Outta Control is the musical equivelant of just that, with a lot going on within that one song musically. Crispy Danger bounce dip their toes into funk plus there's some pop sensibilities and heavy riffs, guitar solos and a hell of a lot of groove, begging the question of where did it come from and how difficult is it to get the balance right?"I think the most important thing with a song like that is not to go overboard with each part," David replied. "If you actually listen to it there's only a few instruments playing at each time. Then the whole band sort of kicks in. And then when the verse starts, it is just bass, drums, vocals. There is nothing else. It lets the vocals set forward and then it kicks up a notch for the chorus with the whole band kicking back in.""And it kind of builds up," Michelle added. In the full interview, David and Michelle go deeper into Outta Control, describing the track as groove-driven with spoken/rap-style verses and heavy sung choruses, characterizing their sound as "heavy metal disco". They explained why the recording took place in Melbourne and the mix was done in Los Angeles by Chris Lord‑Alge, citing Lord-Alge's track record with established artists such as Green Day, My Chemical Romance and Rise Against. We spoke about why this song was chosen to introduce Crispy Danger to the world and if it is an accurate snapshot of what to expect from future releases. The accompanying music video was mentioned, with the band running us through the old school style and approach to most things they do, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

What do you get when you combine two Canadian music lifers into one guitar-heavy power-pop unit that still believes in volume, melody, and sweat? You get SLIP~ons. Fronted by Brock Pytel of Montreal pop-punk staples Doughboys and anchored by Brian Minato, longtime bassist for Sarah McLachlan, the Vancouver four-piece make rock music the honest way. Plug in. Turn it up. Let it rip. Their sophomore EP Overtime arrives February 20, 2026 via Scamindy. SLIP~ons aim straight for the sweet spot where 90s alternative heft meets power-pop immediacy. Think Sugar-era Bob Mould muscle, Hüsker Dü urgency, and the loose confidence of The Replacements, with flashes of Ash and Dinosaur Jr. in the guitar tones. Rounded out by Rob “Shockk” Matharu of The Spitfires on guitar and Shane Wilson on drums, the band plays with instinct and economy. Nothing is overthought. Everything hits when it's supposed to. Overtime takes its title from the sudden-death hockey period, used here as an extended metaphor for pressure, consequence, and the moment when everything sharpens. The EP leans heavier and more focused than the band's debut, pairing Pytel's gravel-edged vocals with punchy, direct arrangements that waste zero time. The lyrics widen their scope too. Politics surface naturally, filtered through experience rather than slogans. As Pytel puts it, “I made it all the way through side A without a single song about a breakup.” The shift is subtle but intentional, and it gives the record real weight. The EP was recorded by John Raham at Afterlife, formerly Mushroom Studios, a room steeped in Canadian music history. Raham's resume includes work with Frazey Ford, Dan Mangan, Tanya Tagaq, Destroyer, and Pharis, and his approach here keeps the performances immediate while giving the songs room to move. Mixing duties were handled by Dave Ogilvie of Skinny Puppy, whose touch adds grit and tension without sanding off the edges. Overtime was mastered by Ronan Chris Murphy, whose work spans artists such as King Crimson, Ulver, and Gwar, bringing clarity and punch while preserving the EP's raw, guitar-forward bite. Toronto's pop-punk powerhouse The Mendozaz are set to unleash their most ambitious and hilarious work to date, the eight-song concept EP The Completely Fictional History of This Great Nation of Canada, out November 3 on Cartridge Heart. Fronted by guitarist-vocalist Jonny alongside Michael on vocals and bass and Dic on drums, The Mendozaz have carved their name into Toronto's punk scene with relentless touring, wild live shows, and anthems built for gang shouts, beer spills, and grinning through the chaos. They've long been known for wrapping sharp hooks in self-aware humor, but on this record they go bigger, faster, and louder, with a clear mission to turn every basement, bar, and festival stage into a frenzy. The EP is bookended by a pair of songs so preposterously profane that reinforcements were needed. Members of Joan Smith and the Jane Does and The Meringues were brought in to provide extra fuel for the f-bombs. All songs were written by The Mendozaz and recorded between This Place Needs A Name and Arc Recording Studio by Matt Gauthier (Handheld, Wasting Time), who also handled mixing and mastering. The result captures the reckless charm of their live show while pushing their storytelling and arrangements into sharper, stranger, and funnier territory. The accompanying video-single “A Piercing Shriek of Death” sets the tone perfectly. “This was the first song written for this record,” says Jonny. “It's based on a very-true Canadian legend that we made up about an expedition of ice fishers being eaten alive by a school of great white sharks near Hudson Bay. I had an old recording of an instrumental jam we did six or seven years ago that I really liked. I channeled my inner Serj and came up with something unlike anything we've ever done. When recording the demo our engineer almost fell out of his chair laughing during the blood curdling scream. He's okay (I think). I needed to be authentic while channeling the plight of the victims of this totally-legit horrible tragedy. Thoughts and prayers.” It's a mix of heavy riffs, absurd humor, and unflinching commitment that defines the EP as a whole.THE MENDOZAZ ONLINE INSTAGRAM | SPOTIFY | BANDCAMP | FACEBOOK | WEBSITE Checkout my YouTube Channel with long form interviews from the Subversives | the History of Lowest of the Low. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9d1VSeOHYuxFWKuRdmn9j8UTW6AHwS_fAlso my Weekly Tour Vlog is up an live on the YouTubeshttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9d1VSeOHYuwphwhc4zd0VgY66f1OUQZp Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shopCheck out new Four Square Here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/brighton-beach-ephttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/seven-oh-sevenhttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/industry-at-home–21st-anniversary-remix-remasteredhttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/when-weeks-were-weekends

Eve's Plum captured the multi-genre energy of the early 90s on their 1993 debut Envy. Fronted by Colleen Fitzpatrick (later known as pop star Vitamin C) the band blended fuzzed-out guitars and hook-heavy melodies that sat comfortably between the noisy shoegaze of Swervedriver and the sweet hooks of Letters to Cleo. Tracks like “Blue” and “I Want It All” showcase their sharp, dynamic songwriting wrapped in punchy production. While Envy didn't break through commercially, it hinted at the band's knack for balancing angst and charm, that maybe a little editing could have improved. In Episode Nineteen, Origin Crxss and Lisa Haden sit down with Terrence from Terrence & The Optimistics.Terrence & The Optimistics are a delightfully quirky New Zealand alternative‑rock outfit originally “frozen in the late 70's” and recently thawed to “fight Dr Depresso” with their sexy disco-themed music, blending vintage 70's soul grooves and 80's alt‑rock flair . Their 2019 EP Groovy Baby earned praise for its nostalgic rhythms and funk-forward tracks like “Soul Baby” and “Dance Dance,” which review dubbed “hip‑gyrating funk groove” reminiscent of an Austin Powers-era dance party. Fronted by Terrence Bull, the duo channels raw, retro energy into music that's both playful and danceable, exploring themes of joy, nostalgia, and optimism in every track.New Artist Spotlight is a community of indie musicians from around the globe.
