The Zombies - from St Albans, Hertfordshire – were one of the most interesting British bands of the 1960s. Their second record, Odessey and Oracle, remains as beguiling now as it did when it was released in 1968, as the group imploded. The spelling mistake in the title is symbolic of the group's legacy; spoiled brilliance. And yet all these years on – over half a century – the group is revered, and celebrated, in the way they perhaps always should have been. How did that happen then? Maybe there is hope for my long defunct teenage indie rock band after all. An active concern since the band regrouped some twenty odd years ago, on March 31st, The Zombies – featuring founding keyboardist Rod Argent and singer Colin Blunstone - release a new record, Different Game, on Cooking Vinyl. There's a UK tour to follow as well. I was lucky enough to get some time with Colin to talk about all of the above – and a whole lot more too... Glen Matlock needs no introduction, but I can't publish an episode with this bit blank so I'll do one anyway. The bass player in the immortal Sex Pistols – and the principal songwriter within that group too – in the decades that have followed he's recorded with Iggy Pop, The Damned, played with the Faces, Primal Scream and – currently - Blondie, shared lead vocals with Midge Ure in the Rich Kids, and released a string of excellent solo records with the Philistines suffix, the most recent of which, Consequences Coming, is due on April 27th on Cooking Vinyl. I'm pleased to say that this interview went much better than the last time I spoke to a Sex Pistol, and yet it's still occasionally feisty stuff… Twitter - @jamesjammcmahon Substack - https://spoook.substack.com YouTube - www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Vf_1E1Sza2GUyFNn2zFMA Reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/jamesmcmahonmusicpod/
We had the pleasure of interviewing Dave Rowntree over Zoom video!Dave Rowntree is pleased to share the new single "TAPE MEASURE" from his debut album, Radio Songs which was released on January 20, 2023 through Cooking Vinyl."Tape Measure" is streaming now. It's a song that dips into the melting pot of sound that the Blur drummer accumulates from his passion for dipping in and out of radio stations the world over and landing on the distinctive sound of a Bollywood soundtrack that Dave splices together with a clipped beat. It's a colorful tune, all rhythm and melody.Dave Rowntree on "Tape Measure":“Anxiety - an unpleasant emotion of inner turmoil and dread. We're fundamentally herd animals, whose main defensive tactic is running away and hiding. We've no sharp claws or teeth to fight with. So we're over sensitized to danger. We see shapes in the shadows, faces in the fire. Disaster always lurks on the grey edges of our consciousness. On the upside, come the zombie apocalypse, we anxious people will already be in hiding, leaving all you smug normies to have your brains eaten.”Radio Songs was produced by Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Wild Beasts, Ghostpoet). We want to hear from you! The audio isn't great on this episode, and so, as is the case when I record an episode and the sound quality isn't what I'd hope it to be, I've published it as a bonus episode. There are moment where it sounds a bit like Daniel Hunt, principal songwriter and producer of Liverpool's longstanding electronic wonders Ladytron, is calling into talkSPORT after seeing his preferred football team succumb to a heavy defeat. In fact, I almost consigned the episode to the bin. But I think what Daniel has to say – about Brazilian politics, the country where he now calls home; the world's creeping dystopia; the direction of the UK's Labour Party – is so interesting, it's worth persevering with a little crackle and hum. Ladytron's seventh studio album, their first in four years, was released on Cooking Vinyl last week. That record is called Time's Arrow, and it's one of the first real great albums I've heard this year. We get into the writing and release of that record too, and the band's coming tour, and where Daniel thinks Ladytron find themselves in 2023. For everything I said about the audio, I really like this episode, even if quite often I don't agree with everything that Daniel has to say. But isn't that the point? It's certainly the point of this podcast. Come for the music, stay for the ideas, agree, disagree, it doesn't really matter, as long as conversations are had and music is enjoyed. Seven million record sales, twelve UK top 40 singles, two number one albums; the music of Deacon Blue - and that group's singer Ricky Ross - defined much of my childhood. And so it's a total thrill to speak to the Dundee born songwriter on this episode. Ricky has a new solo album, Short Stories, Vol. 2, out now on Cooking Vinyl, a tour coming late September, and his first memoir, Walking Back Home: Deacon Blue and Me, published by Headline, out now too. And it's the latter which we principally talk about today. I'm writing a book too. I thought it was a good opportunity to push Ricky for some tips. But also – my dad passed away last weekend. He was 81. He'd been sick for ages. It's very sad, I'm very sad, but I've got some peace about it too. But it does come up in the episode because a lot of the conversation is about growing and feeling and all sorts of important life stuff. It wasn't just a pleasure to speak to Ricky, but a sort of tonic too – to speak to someone obviously sensitive, obviously wise, and with one of those soft Scottish accents that can alleviate anxiety with a single vowel.I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed putting it together. You can read the report at tinyurl.com/GB2RS-2811A The German national amateur radio society DARC has studied the recent flooding disasters in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate and will use the information to help develop future plans. The DARC department for emergency and disaster radio aims to be able to support the population and independent helpers on-site in times of a prolonged communications failure. The aim is to build up a pool of material and helpers who can then set up and operate a temporary network with access to the internet, for example. The full report, in German, is on the DARC website at tinyurl.com/GB2RS-2811B The RSGB understands that its sister society in Norway, the NRRL, is working to establish a beginners' licence in that country, which presently has only one licence class. Hoping to target those as young as 12 or 13, the licence is proposed to permit 10 watts and to encourage newcomers to build their own equipment. The CQWW DX CW contest concludes its 48-hour run at 2359UTC tonight, Sunday. On Monday the FT4 Series #9 takes place on the 80m band from 2000 to 2130 UTC. The exchange is signal report plus Locator. The 144MHz FT8 Activity Contest takes place on Wednesday from 1900 to 2100 UTC. Using FT8 only on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report and locator. Wednesday sees the start of the UK Six Metre Group Winter Marathon. It's not a contest, just an invitation to work as many people as possible on the 50MHz band using any mode. The exchange is signal report plus locator. The event ends on the 31st of January next year. The ARRL 160m CW contest begins at 2200 UTC on Friday the 3rd and continues until Sunday at 1600UTC. Using CW only on the 160m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. W and VE stations also send their ARRL or RAC section info. During the contest, the RSGB will activate special event 1920s vintage callsigns to commemorate the transatlantic tests. Sunday the 5th sees the 144MHz AFS contest, running from 1000 to 1600 UTC. Using all modes on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Friday 26th November 2021. We had yet another week with low solar activity. The solar flux index started the week at 79 and by Thursday had only climbed to 83. Ideally, we want the SFI to be above 100 to guarantee good 10m openings. Geomagnetically, the Sun has been quiet with a maximum Kp index of three. On Thursday it was at one for most of the day. Propquest says that the MUF over a 3,000km path has exceeded 28MHz at times, but was stuck below 24.9MHz on Thursday. As a result, 10m sounded very quiet indeed. This weekend is the CQWW CW contest, which is bound to generate some interest across the bands. Do take a look, especially on 21 and 28MHz, where we can expect some good DX at times, albeit somewhat fleetingly. NOAA has the SFI pegged between 82 and 85 next week as well. There are signs of a possible new sunspot building on the STEREO Ahead spacecraft imagery, but we will have to wait and see. The Kp index may rise to three this weekend, but next week looks quite settled with a Kp index of two forecast. There are coronal holes on the solar surface, but these are relatively small at the time of writing and look non-threatening. As always, things can change quite quickly so don't take out word for it. Keep an eye on solarham.com for updates and Propquest.co.uk for near real-time critical frequency figures. And now the VHF and up propagation news. The current unsettled spell of weather has curtailed any thoughts of Tropo for the period, which includes all of the coming week. This leaves rain scatter to discuss and these heavy showers, some wintry with hail or even thunder, may prove useful for the GHz bands. It is usually the case that showers can be quite vigorous early in the winter season, gaining their energy from the still relatively warm seas. This means that rain scatter paths will often involve showers running south or southeast over the North Sea or the Irish Sea, which online weather radars or lightning displays can locate easily. Other modes are available, such as meteor scatter or aurora and it's well worth finding a good activity-logging website that displays these exotic paths to be there when the propagation is present. Most of the November meteor showers are past their peak, with the exception of the small November Orionids, active from the 13th of November to the 6th of December, peaking on the 28th of November. The big Geminids meteor shower with a ZHR of 120+ is getting closer. It usually starts to build up from the beginning of December so watch out for improving meteor scatter conditions. Remember that the period around dawn is the best for random, ie non-shower, meteor scatter conditions. For EME enthusiasts, Moon declination is still positive until Tuesday and reaches perigee on Saturday. Expect shortening Moon windows and lower peak elevations, but decreasing path losses as the week progresses. Next Saturday morning the Moon and Sun are close in the sky so expect high sky temperatures due to Sun noise, with levels reaching over 3,000 Kelvin at 144MHz on Sunday. And that's all from the propagation team this week

We welcome The Wandering Hearts – who are made up of the wondrous talented trio of AJ Dean-Revington, Chess Whiffin, and Tara Wilcox, onto IUF. This London-based group are coming out the gates running with their highly-anticipated self-titled 2nd studio album. Mixed with pop and acoustic sounds that remind you of Greta Van Fleet, The Well Pennies, and Fleetwood Mac – The Wandering Hearts are now making their own unique stamp inside the world of folk and americana. This is episode, we ask AJ, Chess, and Tara about their origins on how they first met, and how the uncanny chemistry just clicked from day 1. It's only been 6 years in the making, but as of now they have already shared the stages with Robert Plant, Mumford & Sons, and Tom Petty to name a few – and they have been grateful for every opportunity given. And speaking of opportunity, this album had one particular song that had a dream collaboration they didn't see coming. That collaboration, ironically, was on the song “Dreams” which features country legend stars Marty Stuart and Connie Smith. This was a song unlike any other and at the same time was performed to excellence. If there is any such thing as passing the torch from one generation to another, believe us, The Wandering Hearts are ready to build on their young successes. No limit is set for them, and the new album is sure to turn the heads of many in this world in their direction. Tune in now to our conversation with a few wonderfully talented artists, and be sure to buy and stream The Wandering Hearts' self-titled album, due out August 6 via Cooking Vinyl.Stay connected with The Wandering Hearts, visit: https://www.thewanderinghearts.com/, https://www.facebook.com/thewanderinghearts, and https://www.instagram.com/thewanderingheartsmusic/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/
DAM - "Hada Yid'ie Sitna" from the 2019 album Ben Haana Wa Maana on Cooking Vinyl. Formed in the late '90s, DAM have been called "the first Palestinian hip hop crew and among the first to rap in Arabic." Since the very beginning, the group have used their lyrics to speak out about the trials of being Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. On their third and most recent release, Ben Haana Wa Maana (which translates to "Between Both Worlds"), DAM explore the subject of self-love. “We know that we had hit hard times. We always talked about the darkness we live in,” founding member Tamer Nafar said in a press release. “But this time we changed our attitude. As we say in one of our songs 'Hada Yidi'e Sitna'; This is not a darkness of a tomb, we are in a darkness of a womb.” In an interview withThe National, they explain that today's Song of the Day is "the story of kids fighting on the streets before somebody calls their mothers." Songwriter and rapper Maysa Daw (who joined the collective in 2012) explains, "In that song, we're calling for women to take the leadership and guide us in a better way." In the span of a decade, Lucy has had quite the journey, which includes: Performing in Open Mic shows across the U.K. in her early days, her mind-blowing and impactful X-Factor appearance, touring the World while being an ambassador for mental health/rebuilding yourself, and last but not least, having 6 albums under her decorated arsenal of music. She has accomplished so much and yet the growth of her personal and musical aspirations is at a constant. Lucy tells her in-depth story between her maturation within the light and the darkness; From the bottom to the top, it serves as a testament to her growth which shaped her into the person she is today. Escuchar audio
durée : 00:07:23 - Dans la playlist de France Inter - “Have you lost your mind yet?” (Cooking Vinyl), le troisième album de Fantastic Negrito est une recette magique de soul, de funk, de blues, et de Hip Hop. Ouf !!! N’en jetez plus !
Fantastic Negrito - "How Long?" from the 2020 album Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? on Cooking Vinyl. With his past two albums, soulful singer/songwriter Fantastic Negrito (real name: Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz) won Best Contemporary Blues Album at the Grammy Awards, and with his latest LP, Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?, he's poised for a hat-trick. On his new album, Negrito says, "I wanted to write about people I knew, people I grew up with, people whose lives I could personally affect, and whose lives have impacted me," adding, "It was the hardest album I’ve ever written." On today's Song of the Day, Negrito continues to ask the important questions; he tellsPollstar the title was inspired by author James Baldwin's query: “I haven’t got much time left – how long are we going to keep doing this?” He poses the question to "all perpetrators of violence," adding: "There’s so many topics. How long are we going to keep doing all the things we’re doing before we break? Because this is not very sustainable; because we can’t keep doing the same things we’ve been doing in this country for the last 40 or 50 years. You can only destroy, and that’s what we’ve done. It’s broken. Maybe this is just the catalyst for ending [white supremacy]. We’re in need of it. We need to turn it around if we’re going to survive." Sarah Jane Morris in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1982, Morris joined The Republic as lead singer they received enormous publicity from the music press including cover stories with NME and City Limits and a documentary for Granada TV. But the band was deemed too political for radio play, with the exception of Capital London. The Republic were signed to Charlie Gillett's Oval Records Ltd and released an EP entitled Three Songs From The Republic and two singles entitled "One Chance" and "My Spies". Success did not follow and the band split up in 1984. Morris then sang with The Happy End, a 21-piece brass band named after Bertolt Brecht, Elisabeth Hauptmann and Kurt Weill's musical play. Playing a circuit that included Brighton's Zap Club and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, The Happy End explored protest music from Africa, Ireland and Latin America on a way that emulated Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra. Morris explored her more theatrical side on Brecht/Eisler's There's Nothing Quite Like Money and Brecht/Weill's Pirate Jenny from The Threepenny Opera. The Happy End released two albums on the Cooking Vinyl label with Morris. Following a successful Edinburgh run in 1986, Morris then decamped to chart success with The Communards. Morris found fame initially with the Communards, who are best known for their hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Morris featured prominently on many Communards tracks, her low and deep vocal range contrasting with Jimmy Somerville's falsetto. She has also recorded as a solo artist, releasing albums since 1989. These have enjoyed most popularity in Italy and Greece. Morris also contributed to the opera The Fall of the House of Usher (1991) by Peter Hammill and Judge Smith, singing the part of the chorus.[1] She also sang the part of Mère Ubu on the Pere Ubu album Long Live Père Ubu! (2009), which features songs from Bring Me The Head of Pere Ubu, David Thomas's theatrical adaptation of Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi. She recorded an album of John Martyn covers with guitarist Tony Rémy in 2019 entitled Sweet Little Mystery.
Wow what a year it's been already, huh?! If you're looking for some low-stakes joy and relief from dealing with life here on Earth in 2020 AD, you've come to the right place. EPISODE #81 of Random Old Records Podcast is stacked with good music and escapism, so slam that download button right now!I've been in a deep country phase ever since watching the Ken Burns documentary last year, so this episode starts off with some classics from Dottie West and Mike Nesmith, plus honky tonk rarities from Johnny David and Joyce Cobb. My other obsession lately has been Various Artists box sets from the Cherry Red group, so I also highlighted some jams by The Tremoloes and Byzantium from the incredible Getting It Together In The Country collection of UK country rock. As if the theme wasn't crystal clear, the interstitial sounds in this episode come from the 1967 stock cars n' moonshine epic Hell On Wheels, starring country legend Marty Robbins! You'll also hear recent jams from Holly Golightly, Paint, Parsnip, En Attendant Ana, and a whole lot more. This is a fun one, so stay indoors and check it out!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! Rory McLeod in conversation with David Eastaugh Rory McLeod (born 1957) is a British folk singer-songwriter from London. He grew up in Camberwell before moving to Northolt and later West Kilburn. His career has included being a fire eater and circus clown[3] and his performances include storytelling in the tradition of the traveling minstrel or troubadour, and playing a wide range of instrumentsincluding guitar, harmonica, trombone and his personally-made stomp box. WoMAD have said: "With Rory McLeod, you get the music of the world in one suitcase.[...] You can hear flamenco, calypso, blues and Celtic influences in his music, all wrapped together in an inimitable style". He has recorded and toured with (then) fellow Cooking Vinyl artist Michelle Shocked. He also performed on Puddle Dive, the 1993 album by fellow singer-songwriter, Ani DiFranco. In 1996, McLeod's song Invoking the Spirits, which was inspired by time he spent in Zimbabwe, was a BBC Radio 4 "pick of the week". McLeod played the theme tune for the TV animation series, Creature Comforts.Martin Newell has described McLeod as "a feral folk musician of enormous talent", and writing in The Guardian Robin Denselow called him a "rousing harmonica player and guitarist". In 2002, McLeod was the winner of the Best Live Act title at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. McLeod played harmonica on Nizlopi's 2008 album, Make It Happen.

Singer and songwriter Nina Nesbitt's mixture of pop-inspired melodies, part-acoustic instrumentation, and yearning relationship angst saw her cast as the female counterpart to Ed Sheeran when she was invited to open shows for him as a teen. However, Nesbitt carved out her own identity and had a U.K. hit with "Stay Out" before landing just outside of the Top Ten with her full-length debut, 2014's Peroxide. She has also written songs for artists such as Jessie Ware and Olivia Holt. The Apple Tree EP Though she had originally wanted to be an author, Scotland-born Nesbitt eventually started setting her short stories to the music that she wrote on the piano and, later, acoustic guitar. At 16, she began performing in Edinburgh and established a video channel where she posted a mixture of original songs and covers. In 2011, a chance encounter and on-the-spot performance of her song "Standing on One Leg" for pop sensation Ed Sheeran led to support slots and an on-stage cameo during his nation-wide tour. In the meantime, her version of Example's "Stay Awake" was heard by the U.K. rapper, and he subsequently invited Nesbitt to join him for dates at the end of his U.K. tour. She self-released her first EP, The Apple Tree, in 2012, and it received radio support from BBC Radio 1.Stay Out A record deal with Island/Universal soon followed, as did a series of EPs, including 2013's Stay Out. It spent a week on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, while the title track reached number 21 on the U.K. singles chart. "Stay Out" reappeared on Nesbitt's full-length debut, 2014's Peroxide, which went to number 11 in the U.K. and 40 in Ireland. It featured other songs from her previous EPs alongside original material. 2014 also saw the release of Sheeran's x LP, which included the songs "Nina" and "Photograph," both inspired by the couple's brief relationship. The Nesbitt EP Modern Love followed in early 2016 before she parted ways with Island. Later in 2016, she self-released the Life in Colour EP and signed with Cooking Vinyl. The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change Her debut for Cooking Vinyl was 2018's Somebody Special EP. Its title song landed in Ireland's Top 100 and received official remixes by Leon Lour and R3hab. At the end of the year, Nesbitt's version of "Oh Holy Night" charted in Sweden. She toured in support of Rudimental in early 2019 before embarking on a headlining tour of the U.S. In the meantime, Cooking Vinyl released her second long-player, The Sun Will Come Up, the Seasons Will Change, that February. It featured production by Nesbitt, Fraser T. Smith (Adele, Gorillaz), Lostboy (Anne-Marie), and Jordan Riley (Dakota, Dan Caplen).Follow Sidewalk Talk:https://twitter.com/sidewalktalkshw (all updates)https://instagram.com/sidewalktalkedm See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Hiyer. It's the British summer (apparently) and that means it's festival season. We went up to the beautiful Lowther deer park, got our culturally appropriative head-dresses on and recorded two banging episodes, which means it's double-dose week on the Two Shot Podcast. First up, in our usual Thursday morning slot, we have Sheffield's own power couple, John and Laura McClure from Reverend And The Makers. We've spoken to Jon before on #TSP051 but we thought we'd invite him back on with his partner Laura to discuss the ins and outs of being a band wife and husband, Rev-enders, tour decompression techniques, penis reviews and a bunch of other stuff. Reverend and the Makers are always out on tour soon so make sure you go and get a ticket and keep an eye out for the forthcoming 2-disc 'best-of', out soon on Cooking Vinyl records. This is a chat from down at the lakeside bar at Kendal Calling festival (forgive the distant drums). Hope you enjoy and we'll be back on Sunday for a chat with Chic's legendary Nile Rodgers.Get in touch...Facebook- search 'Two Shot Podcast' Twitter- @twoshotpod Instagram- @twoshotpod If you've enjoyed listening then please click through to https://www.patreon.com/twoshotpod to make a donation to the running costs of the show. The Lilac Time special with Stephen Duffy in conversation The Lilac Time is a British alternative folk-rock band that was originally formed in Herefordshire, England by Stephen Duffy, his brother Nick Duffy and their friend Michael Weston in 1986. The band's name was taken from a line in the Nick Drake song "River Man". Since its formation, The Lilac Time has gone through various line-up changes, with the Duffy brothers as mainstays. The band's activity has intertwined with Stephen Duffy's solo and songwriting career. The Duffy brothers and Michael Weston had recorded music that would become the band's self-titled debut, which was first released on Swordfish Records in 1987. Michael Giri and Fraser Kent joined when the band went on tour. The group signed to Fontana, which reissued the band's first album in remixed form in 1988. The group went on to release the albums Paradise Circus in 1989, and & Love For All in 1990, the latter of which was produced by Andy Partridge and John Leckie. The Lilac Time was dropped by Fontana then briefly signed to Creation Records, where the band was subsequently managed by label head Alan McGee. The band's sole release on Creation was Astronauts, in 1990. The Duffy brothers' cousin, noted-session musician Cara Tivey, contributed organ and piano to the album. The band later regrouped with Claire Worrall and Melvin Duffy (no relation to the brothers) and recorded Looking For A Day In The Night with producer Stephen Street for spinART Records in 1999. They then released Lilac 6 on Cooking Vinyl in 2001, followed by Keep Going, which was released in 2003 under the name "Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time" on Folk Modern. Runout Groove was released on 22 October 2007 on Bogus Frontage. The band played the 2007 Green Man Festival and the Queen Elizabeth Hall as a six-piece. The band's gig at the Green Man Festival serves as the backdrop to the film "Memory & Desire — 30 Years in the Wilderness With Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time." The documentary was filmed over six years by Douglas Arrowsmith, who included new and vintage Lilac footage. The film is accompanied by a Universal Records album of the same name, which compiles songs from Duffy's thirty years of music making. The Queen Elizabeth Hall concert is to be released as a live recording. No Sad Songs was released on Tapete Records in April 2015. A new Lilac Time album, Return to Us is planned for release in late 2017.

The Bronx arrived on the scene some 15 years ago, all hardcore punk ethics and rock & roll showmanship. Through everything, they're still here and still raising hell on a global scale. Five albums deep - eight if you count their Mariachi El Bronx records - the Los Angeles band have a storied history that has traversed house shows, international festivals and the hallowed halls of the Ed Sullivan Theater. Before a killer show at Sydney's Metro Theatre this past October, vocalist Matt Caughtthran and guitarist Joby Ford shared a highlight reel from their lives as perennial underdogs that have found themselves winning time and time again. This is a very special episode for us as it features songs from Jess Locke, High Tension, Smith Street Band, during the legendary ‘Gig of The Century’ fundraising show for the #keepcommunityradio movement that took place at Crowbar in Brisbane on the 5th of June, 2016. a very big thank you for everybody who got involved in this show. The bands who dedicated their time, the venue who dedicated their business, and the patrons who donated their money. As you may be aware, The Federal Budget contains cuts of $1.4 million p.a., funding that currently keeps community radio stations like this one, broadcasting on digital radio in 5 capital cities. The good guys at The Smith Street Band helped organise this fundraising event and implemented a ‘pay what you feel’ payment model at the door, with all proceeds going to community radio. They managed to raise $3,500 on the day, and more importantly highlighted an important issue in our industry. The Smith Street Band: In only 5 years of existence The Smith Street Band have made a tremendous impact on the Australian music scene by revitalising the long forgotten genre that is a staple of our cultural identity; Pub Rock. Their raw punk rock sound with intelligent lyricism delivered in vocalist Wil Wagner's instantly recognisable, prominent and sharp Australian tone have made The Smith Street Band our new Pub Rock icons. High Tension: Coming from Collingwood in Victoria, High Tension are a brutal four piece that have been hitting it hard since their beginning in 2012. Fronted by the outright terrifying Jakarta born Karina Utomo, High tension will leave you in a dizzying state of disaster which is amplified ten fold during their live performances. Sounding like they’ve taken an influence from every possible style of heavy music and fused it together to make High Tension stand out in their own. They’ve released two albums so far through the Cooking Vinyl label, 2013’s ‘Death Beat’ and 2015’s ‘Bully’, both of which have received critical acclaim including ARIA award nominations, flawless reviews from music publications, and even the tick of approval from master of hardcore himself, Henry Rollins. The powerful thud behind the drum kit, with pounding fuzzed out bass lines, sharp erratic guitar, and the unpredictable howls, screams and slurs on the vocals make High Tension a band worth checking out. Jess Locke Band: Starting off as a solo project in 2009 and consisting of only her voice and acoustic guitar, Jess Locke recorded her first album ‘In the Bedroom’ literally in her bedroom, true DIY style. Over the years since, she has released another four DIY acoustic albums as well as a live album from The Old Bar in Melbourne. But in 2014 Jess decided to switch up her playing styles and bring in a few other elements like drums, percussion, bass, ukulele and even some good ol electric guitar. The lo-fi sounds of her DIY recordings, simple and effective melodies and blissful delivery of her sad girl lyricism create a powerful sound of her own that makes for very comfortable listening. Her latest track ‘Paper Planes’ was released at the start of June and is the first taste of her next album due for recording later in the year. All sets were Recorded at Crowbar on the 5th of June, 2016 by Branko Cosic. All sets mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 3rd July 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
10 years ago, Frank Iero was on the front-line of the Black Parade, leading the so-called emo revolution out of the alt-club nights and into the arenas, guitars and eyeliner in hand. As guitarist and backing vocalist in My Chemical Romance, Iero was a part of the major dynamic shift in both what a major-selling contemporary rock band could look like, but also sound like. Fast forward to present day, and Iero is still forging ahead as the leader of frnkiero andthe cellabration; a band that is hard on your spell-checker, but easy on the ear. With a brief window of time in his promo trail in the lead-up to an in-store appearance at Sydney's Utopia Records, Iero talked through growing up as a wide-eyed Jersey punk, elevating to arena status and the little old lady that almost ended it all. frnkiero andthe cellabration's debut album, Stomachaches, is available in Australia via Cooking Vinyl. Libby Purves meets folk singer Peggy Seeger; cartoonist Stanley McMurtry; composer Milton Mermikides and director Alex Mermikides and auctioneer James Buchanan. Stanley McMurtry MBE, otherwise known as MAC, has been the Daily Mail's cartoonist for the past 46 years. He started out as an animator before becoming a cartoonist, producing daily images for the Daily Sketch and latterly the Mail. Mac views his role as making "dreary news of the daily paper brighter by putting in a laugh". In all of his cartoons, except when making a political statement or when it depicts a tragedy, Mac includes a small portrait of his wife within the picture. MAC's Year 2015 - Cartoons from the Daily Mail is published by Spellbinding Media. Milton Mermikides was diagnosed with leukaemia 11 years ago and his sister Alex became his bone marrow donor. Together they have created Bloodlines, a combination of a dance performance and a medical lecture, which conveys what happens in the body - and in the mind - of someone undergoing last-chance treatment. Bloodlines is part of the 2015 Manchester Science Festival and is at the John Thaw Theatre at the University of Manchester. Peggy Seeger is an American folk singer who, along with her late husband Ewan MacColl, led the folk revival movement of the 1950s and '60s. She is on tour with the album Joy of Living which features new interpretations of MacColl's songs by artists including Martin Carthy, Christy Moore, Steve Earle, Eliza Carthy and Jarvis Cocker. Joy of Living - A Tribute to Ewan MacColl is on Cooking Vinyl. The Ewan MacColl Tribute Tour starts with a concert at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. James Buchanan founded Amati, an auction house for string instruments. He started out as a porter at Bonhams auction house and after completing his apprenticeship worked at Christie's and Bromptons before setting up his own house in 2012. He quickly realised he had an eye for distinguishing between the real and the fake and has handled instruments worth millions of pounds from the great Italian makers Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù. The Amati Exhibition is at the Langham Hotel, London. Producer: Paula McGinley.

Libby Purves meets actor Cathy Tyson; Sir Tim Smit, co-founder of the Eden Project; singer and songwriter Adam Cohen and designer Rupert Harry Miller. Cathy Tyson is a television, film and theatre actor. She plays the title role of Marie Curie in Radiance: The Passion of Marie Curie by Alan Alda. She starred opposite the late Bob Hoskins in the 1986 film Mona Lisa for which she was nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe award. She appeared on television in Band of Gold and Grange Hill and on stage in The Taming of the Shrew and The Merchant of Venice. Radiance: The Passion of Marie Curie is at the Tabard Theatre, London. Rupert Harry Miller is a designer and author. His autobiography, Life of a Salesman, tells how he honed his salesmanship skills in Eastern Europe in the 1990s. The story of his colourful antics is clouded by the death of Rupert's brother, Julian, who suffered from haemophilia and died after developing Aids from the contaminated blood he received as part of his treatment. Life of a Salesman is published by Spiffing Covers. Adam Cohen is a Canadian singer and songwriter. His fifth album, We Go Home, was recorded in several locations including the Greek Island of Hydra, where he spent most of his childhood, and Montreal, the city of his birth. Adam is the son of Leonard Cohen, celebrated for songs such as Hallelujah, Bird on the Wire and Suzanne. We Go Home is released on Cooking Vinyl. Adam is touring Europe. Sir Tim Smit is a Dutch-born British businessman who, with John Nelson, rediscovered and then restored the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall. The gardens had slipped into decline after the estate's workers had left to fight in the First World War. Sir Tim is also co-founder of the Eden Project, an environmental tourist attraction. The Lost Gardens of Heligan celebrates the 25th anniversary of its rediscovery with a photographic exhibition of The Lost Images and a walk through the garden. Producer: Paula McGinley.
