Story of the Week (DR):The Cracker Barrel BSCracker Barrel scraps new logo design, keeps 'Old Timer' after listening to customersRestaurant chain's stock price sank following removal of 'Uncle Herschel' from brandingUncle Herschel wasn't just a marketing creation, he was a real person. Born Herschel McCartney, he was the younger brother of Cracker Barrel founder Dan Evins' mother and served as an early goodwill ambassador for the brand. A salesman for Martha White Flour Company for over three decades, Herschel traveled through rural America, building relationships in small-town general stores — the very kinds of places that inspired Cracker Barrel's original design and ethos. When Cracker Barrel introduced its iconic logo in 1969, the old-timer sitting beside the barrel was long thought by fans to be based on Herschel himself, though the company later clarified that this wasn't the case.In 2004, the Justice Department (during the George W. Bush administration) sued the chain for discriminating against Black customers. In 2006, they settled a lawsuit involving three of their Illinois restaurants for “discriminatory practices, racially charged language, and inappropriate touching.”Cracker Barrel's inconvenient fact: all the customers who loved its old logo had stopped going to the restaurantFounder Dan EvinsHis tone was considerably harsher when it came to defending a January 1991 directive to all the company's restaurants to fire employees “whose sexual preferences fail to demonstrate normal heterosexual values.” Mr. Evins's explanation for the edict was that gay people made customers in rural areas uncomfortable. As many as 16 openly or suspected gay employees were promptly fired.“They actually put a policy like this in writing, which was, and still is, shocking,” David Smith, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign. The New York City Employees Retirement System, which owned more than $6 million of Cracker Barrel shares, led other stock owners in using their votes and other legal means to organize resistance. In March 1991, Mr. Evins apologized and said the policy had been rescinded. But New York and its allies fought until 58 percent of the shareholders in 2002 persuaded Cracker Barrel's board to vote unanimously to explicitly forbid antigay discrimination in its equal employment policy. In July 2001, shareholders replaced Evins as CEO with Michael A. Woodhouse, who at the time was serving as the company's chief operating officer. Evins maintained his position as chairman of the board.Prior to founding the company, Dan worked for Consolidated Oil, a company founded by his grandfather.Cracker Barrel took down Pride page after rebrand fiascoCompany faced criticism over modernist redesign and support for LGBT causes before stock reboundThe website link for Cracker Barrel's Pride page, which used to boast that the company was "bringing the porch to Pride," now redirects to its "Culture and Belonging" page.Cracker Barrel previously sponsored the Nashville Pride Parade in 2024 and unveiled a line of rainbow-colored rocking chairs for Pride month. The company also has an LGBTQ employee resource group called the "LGBTQ+ Alliance," along with groups for veterans and other communities.Despite claims it's 'too woke,' Cracker Barrel actually has a fraught LGBTQ+ historyCracker Barrel received a score of zero on the inaugural index in 2002. The chain was criticized in the 1990s for discrimination against gay employees. In 1991, the company adopted a corporate policy stating that any worker who failed to demonstrate "normal heterosexual values" would be fired. Eleven employees were terminated under the rule, leading to boycotts and protests nationwide. Over time, Cracker Barrel's HRC score improved, reaching 80 in 2021 after the company took several public pro-LGBTQ stances.58 percent of the shareholders in 2002 persuaded Cracker Barrel's board to vote unanimously to explicitly forbid antigay discrimination in its equal employment policy.Proud Representation: Business Resource Groups: These voluntary, employee-led organizations are open to all employees and provide opportunities to network, develop leadership skills, and serve as cross-functional resources for our teams.AMPT (Advancing Modern Professionals for Tomorrow) aims to connect and empower modern professionals by promoting a community of inclusive, ambitious, and diverse members that unify through the Cracker Barrel to equip our community and leaders for the future. They discuss Israel's criminal “double tap” strike on Gaza's Nasser Hospital, The Free Press's sanctimonious reaction to criticism of their reporting about starvation in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu's constant moving of the goalposts on a ceasefire deal, why Trump's meeting South Korean president Lee Jae Myung was humiliating for America, Trump's lies and delusions about being a peacemaker, the latest on Iran negotiations, why Australia expelled Iranian diplomats, and Putin's answer to Eurovision. The host frames the pre-dawn FBI raid on John Bolton's home as a major development in the fight against the "deep state." He speculates that the raid is not a random event but a strategic move to "flip" Bolton, who he alleges had possession of a classified memo that proved the "Russia collusion hoax" was a conspiracy. The host connects this to his belief that the CIA's "Project Mockingbird," which allegedly pays journalists to spin government narratives, is still active. The host also expresses grave concern over the escalating conflict in Russia and Ukraine, arguing that the American media is lying about the true nature of the attacks. He claims that U.S.-made missiles with U.S. targeting have struck Russian cities, and that Russian retaliatory strikes are a predictable response. This, he argues, could lead to World War III. The show concludes with praise for Tulsi Gabbard, whom the host claims is leading a "purge" of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). He states that she has slashed staff and eliminated an office that was responsible for censoring the Hunter Biden laptop story, framing it as a major victory against government corruption and a sign that the "purge has begun."

(This podcast was previously recorded and published on May 29, 2020)   Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney  ...    Nothing makes me happier than hearing a word from God and following that word and then sharing that word with the church.   Truly it is in God we live and move and have our being!  Acts 17:28   We can look at television and occasionally find something we enjoy.  But most of the time I'm just switching channels.   But the word from God is life.  And by that word I have hope in the various circumstances of this life, and am comforted, and know what to do. *****   Titus 3:9-11   9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.   10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;   (heretic:  a person who refuses the power of truth in the matter at hand; in our case, church goers who will not obey the scriptures)   11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.   When a church goer demonstrates a rejection of the scripture, you will not be able to change him.  He will pull you down.  When he demonstrates to us that he does not regard specific instructions whereby he can be helped, we must walk away, leaving him to his own way of thinking.   ***   Romans 8:14    For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.   ***    Matthew 5:32   But I (Jesus) say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.   ***   Paul said:   II Thessalonians 2    3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day (of the Lord) shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;    (Churches would "fall away" from scripture and set up another doctrine.  NASB calls this falling away, "the apostasy".)    4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.   When a "brother" in the church is committing specific sins, put him away from you and refuse to keep company with him.   I Corinthians 5    1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.   2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.   3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,   4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,   5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.   6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?    7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:   8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.   9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:   10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.   11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.   12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?   13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.   ***   Psalm 119:105  THY word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. *** Psalm 111:10  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do HIS commandments: HIS praise endureth for ever.   *** II Timothy 3   16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:   17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.   Also in II Timothy 3:   1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.   2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,   3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,   4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;   5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.    (By verse 5 we know Paul was warning us concerning those in the churches.)    6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,    7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.   13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. *** Psalm 119:130  The entrance of THY words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.   *** And God will give us wisdom when we ask HIM.   James 1:5   If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.   ***   And we have access to God at all times.   Philippians 4   6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.   7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Today's Headlines: President Trump was caught on a hot mic telling French President Emmanuel Macron that Vladimir Putin “wants to make a deal,” though the Kremlin brushed it off Reports say Putin even suggested Zelensky travel to Moscow — a nonstarter, given Russia's stance on Ukraine. Trump also ruled out sending U.S. troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees. Meanwhile, the Trump administration revoked security clearances for 37 current and former national security officials, many tied to the 2016 Russia interference assessment. Trump also escalated his attacks on “woke” institutions, directing his lawyers to target the Smithsonian museums over their exhibits. In California, Republican lawmakers are suing to block Governor Gavin Newsom's redistricting legislation, while in Texas, State Rep. Nicole Collier is literally sleeping in the capitol to avoid signing a GOP loyalty paper that would otherwise allow her to leave without threat of arrest. Elsewhere, Oklahoma schools chief Ryan Walters announced that out-of-state teacher applicants must pass an “anti-radical” test written by PragerU and  immigration authorities rolled out a new policy weighing immigrants' “positive attributes” in citizenship applications — just as ICE moved to deport a Maine police officer accused of overstaying his visa. Finally, Minnesota joined states suing TikTok over addictive algorithms, and the FDA warned consumers to toss certain Walmart frozen shrimp after reports of possible radioactive contamination linked to an Indonesian supplier. The provided text, "Cutting Out the Rot," discusses a hypothetical second term for Donald J. Trump, focusing on his alleged intent to enact a widespread purge of federal agencies and institutions. The author suggests that unlike his first term, where he merely "shouted at the choir," this time Trump would employ a "scorched-earth doctrine" to dismantle what he perceives as an "Intercom" of entrenched opposition within the government. This includes mass terminations, budget cuts to NGOs, and the cessation of various government-funded programs, all aimed at de-powering ideological adversaries. The text highlights a paradox where the loudest protestors against this "purge" are often current or former government employees themselves, illustrating an internal conflict within the governmental structure. Ultimately, the piece portrays a theoretical "surgical" approach to governance, designed to eliminate perceived "moles" and "rot" from the system to ensure the republic's survival.

Trump's Second Term Purge

Donald Trump's first term in office felt, to many, like a burst of cultural backlash—loud, brash, and ultimately blunted. He entered Washington in 2017 promising to “drain the swamp,” but underestimated how deep and tangled the roots ran. The permanent bureaucracy, the NGO network, and the sprawling infrastructure of media-linked soft power endured. By the time Joe Biden took office in 2021, the so-called “intercom” —the elite feedback loop of agencies, think tanks, activist nonprofits, and friendly press—was back in full control. But Trump's 2024 victory marked a sharp break. This time, he came in not as an insurgent learning the ropes but as a returning general with a kill list. The second term's agenda is unapologetically surgical: cut, cauterize, and rebuild. Where once he allowed careerists to stay on out of caution or optics, now he's purging aggressively. The Department of Justice, State Department, USAID, and even federally funded broadcasters like NPR and PBS are feeling the blowtorch. The method is both ideological and operational. Ideologically, Trump and his allies frame the federal bureaucracy as a hostile occupying force—what he has long branded the “deep state.” Operationally, they are stripping funding, closing offices, and firing tens of thousands of career civil servants. Reports cite over 275,000 federal civil service layoffs since January 2025, not including contractors. Whole agencies, particularly in the foreign aid and NGO sphere, are being gutted. USAID—long accused by critics of being an internationalist activist arm under the guise of development—has been defunded to the bone.In Trump's view, this is not mere budget discipline but necessary surgery to remove “cancer” before it metastasizes again. It's the same logic Elon Musk applied at Twitter—slash headcount under the guise of cost-cutting while gutting the internal political culture. For Trump, that means sweeping out anyone suspected of ideological hostility, no matter their seniority or tenure protections. His allies call it flushing out moles; his critics call it authoritarianism.Symbolic moments punctuate the purge. In Washington, D.C., Sean Dunn—a career DOJ trial lawyer—was filmed throwing a sandwich at federal agents while shouting “fascist.” For Trump supporters, it was proof of rot: a sworn officer of the executive branch openly defying the chain of command, embodying the very subversion they claim is endemic. Dunn was arrested on felony charges and promptly fired—a public scalp meant to signal that no one in the bureaucracy is untouchable. To the administration, the protests outside the White House are not grassroots uprisings but the death throes of the old guard—mostly white, highly educated NGO veterans, retired diplomats, and Beltway lifers. Trump's team insists they are dismantling not democracy but a parallel government that never stood for election. This is the paradox at the heart of Trump's second term. Governing is harder than protesting, and he knows it. But he's betting that a total institutional purge—painful, disruptive, and risky—will finally deliver what “drain the swamp” never could: a federal apparatus aligned with the president's vision, not working to undermine it.In his eyes, cutting out the rot now might save the patient later, even if the surgery leaves scars. Whether history calls it reform or wreckage will depend on who writes the next chapter.

Rescued by a heavily armed stranger with his own agenda for the night, they join other civilians caught outside during the 12-hour period where all crime is legal. The Purge: Anarchy takes us beyond the home invasion scenario of the first film and onto the streets, revealing the true horror of this dystopian America. What makes this film particularly disturbing isn't just the random violence, but the organized, calculated nature of the killing. Government forces systematically kidnap citizens from lower-income neighborhoods to sell to the wealthy for their private hunting parties, exposing the Purge for what it truly is—a mechanism for population control targeting the poor.Frank Grillo's character, known simply as Sergeant, embodies the moral complexity at the heart of the film. Initially venturing out for revenge, he repeatedly chooses to protect others despite his personal mission. Through his journey and the various civilian reactions to extreme danger, the film raises profound questions about human nature. Would we maintain our humanity when all rules disappear? How would we actually react when facing life-threatening situations after living in relative safety? The inconsistency between how we think we'd behave versus our actual reactions under pressure becomes a fascinating aspect of the story. The film's exploration of class warfare, government conspiracy, and the emergence of an anti-Purge resistance movement adds layers to this franchise that elevate it beyond simple horror. Ready to see if you'd survive a night where anyone could be hunting you? Listen now and join our debate about whether the rules of the Purge would truly contain the violence to just one night a year.

The climate crisis seems to be missing from the overwhelming majority of the popular culture that we consume. But is that really the case? In this compelling conversation Mark Bould, a distinguished professor of film and literature at the University of the West of England, explains how we might be able to uncover the crisis in TV, books, and film where it isn't obvious at first glance. Bould is the author of The Anthropocene Unconscious: Climate Catastrophe Culture, which challenges our conventional understanding of climate change narratives and encourages us to uncover the implicit climate themes woven into various forms of media. Bould explains in this conversation how science fiction especially can serve as a powerful lens through which we can examine the complexities of climate change and its cultural implications. Throughout this episode, we journey through a diverse array of media, including the Sharknado, Arrival, World War Z, The Edge of Tomorrow, The Purge, and the Fast & Furious franchise to examine how climate themes appear in unexpected plas. From the explosive rise of zombie films to the nuanced storytelling of literary novels, Bould shares his insights on how these narratives not only reflect societal anxieties but also shape our collective consciousness regarding the climate crisis. Whether you're a film nerd or a climate change champion, this episode offers a thought-provoking exploration of how fiction can illuminate the biggest challenges we face.  Please consider becoming a paid subscriber to our newsletter/podcast, The Climate Weekly, to help support this show. Filmmaker James DeMonaco (THE PURGE franchise, THIS IS THE NIGHT) joins Adam and Joe to discuss his career journey and the making of his new feature THE HOME (in theaters now). From growing up in Staten Island with no viable connections to the film industry… to teaching himself how to write scripts armed with only a copy of Syd Field's book SCREENPLAY… to briefly attending NYU film school where he made a friend with a means to securing some financing… to making his first independent film RED which lead to a student Academy Award… to how his script for JACK (co-written with Gary Nadeau) lead to an industry bidding war… to working with cinematic icon Francis Ford Coppola and the brilliant Robin Williams on the project… to writing films like THE NEGOTIATOR, the remake of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and SKINWALKERS before getting the opportunity to direct his screenplay for LITTLE NEW YORK… to creating the worldwide blockbuster franchise THE PURGE and why he and his producing partner Sébastien K. Lemercier have continued to shaped the franchise through five (soon to be SIX) films… to how visiting family members in elder care facilities lead to the idea for THE HOME… to the casting of SNL alum Pete Davidson and the great John Glover in leading roles of the film… to what it was like shooting a film with a cast of elderly people during the tail end of COVID…to learning that every writer needs a “Mad Hungarian” and tons of other anecdotes he's learned throughout his career… this honest conversation about the path of becoming a filmmaker is one that every artist can benefit from.

“Write your own anxieties. Get into your own psyche. I think if it scares you – like, I'm terrified of guns, and that's where The Purge came from. But here, there were various generational fears and whatnot that led to The Home, Adam's fears and my fears about getting older and our anxiety. So I would say if it's born from your fear, the majority of the audience probably has a similar fear. I think we are communal in that way. Fears are not singular, so I think you should work off your own fears, and on a practical level, if you can keep the budget small, you're in a much better place getting it made. That was key to The Purge getting made, that it was one location,” says James DeMonaco, director and co-writer of the new horror film, The Home. On today's show, we talk with both James DeMonaco and Adam Cantor, co-writers of the new horror film The Home. The Home is about Max (Pete Davidson), a troubled young man, who starts working at a retirement home only to realize its residents and caretakers harbor sinister secrets. As he investigates the building and its forbidden fourth floor, he starts to uncover connections to his own past and upbringing as a foster child.  DeMonaco, best known for creating The Purge franchise, and Cantor, an actor-turned-writer, talk about their favorite horror films from the 1970s, the challenge of bringing a 70s vibe to modern horror films, and working with their Staten Island buddy, comedian Pete Davidson and bringing out his intense dramatic performance. DeMonaco also talks about the impact The Purge films have had on our culture.  “I grew up watching Romero and Carpenter films and George Miller. I always thought they put great mirrors up to society, and there was always some kind of smuggler's cinema idea, where they were smuggling socio-political themes into the genre's pieces. So sadly, The Purge is reflective of the world we're living in and becoming, I think, more reflective, which is scary. And terrifying. I wish it wasn't, I wish it was a complete fantasy to purge. Unfortunately, it's not right now, and it's seemingly getting worse,” says DeMonaco who weighs in on whether something like The Purge could happen in real life.  “I used to say, ‘Absolutely not!' Now, I don't know if I would say that any longer, and that's even scarier to me,” says DeMonaco. To hear more about The Home and the spooky events that h appened on set, listen to the podcast.
