2026-01-18 | UPDATES #105 | The Purge Turns Inward: The Kremlin Starts Eating Its “Patriots.” What's driving it? Fear of rivals and conspiracies? Punishment for incompetence? Or just plain paranoia? The people who cheerlead for a regime typically get rewarded, until that regime metastasizes and gets consumed by grievance, revenge narratives and paranoia. In Putin's Russia, they get recycled almost as efficiently as Ukrainians are recycling the Russian army into compost and scrap metal. Arrests, seizure of properties, reputational ruin and stripped of their power and status. If you lose proximity to power in Russia, you lose everything. How many of the Russian elite are being ostracized, incarcerated, or found dead under mysterious circumstances. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: Meduza (Jan 16, 2026) — Anton Panov death / alleged intelligence links Cyprus Mail (Jan 16, 2026) — embassy access denied; investigative linksRBC (Jan 15, 2026) — Alexey Sklyar found dead RIA Novosti (Jan 15, 2026) — “Preliminary, he took his own life” Kommersant (Jan 15, 2026) — Sklyar details Reuters (May 22, 2024) — pro-war blogger backlash over Popov arrest (Telegram quotes) Reuters (May 23, 2024; Jul 26, 2024; Oct 7, 2024) — Defense Ministry corruption crackdown; factional “clans”; FSB role The Guardian (Nov 6, 2025) — repression turns inward on pro-war figures Carnegie Endowment (Dec 22, 2025) — why the Kremlin punishes pro-war bloggers Novaya Gazeta Europe (Sep 25, 2025) — Roman Alyokhin “foreign agent” case UNITED24 Media (Nov 18, 2025) — “destroyed legally” framing (via The Economist summary)Reuters (Sep 1, 2022) — list of Russian businessmen deaths in unexplained circumstancesMeduza (Jul 7, 2025) — review of sudden executive deaths since 2022 Britannica — Great Purge Britannica — Night of the Long Knives USHMM Holocaust Encyclopedia — Röhm Purge / legalization-after-the-fact (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum)----------SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN Events in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon Curtainhttps://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur events of the first half of the year in Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa were a huge success. If you are in an activated state right now, this episode meets you where you are. You do not need to make decisions or figure anything out while you listen. The focus is on calming the body first, not fixing the behavior. Dr. Marianne guides you through simple, accessible grounding and nervous system regulation that can help reduce urgency without judgment or pressure. This episode is designed to be replayed during urge peaks and listened to in real time. Urges Are Signals, Not Commands Urges often show up when something feels overwhelming, unsafe, or out of control. This episode reframes urges as signals from the nervous system rather than failures or moral flaws. You will hear reminders that urges are learned responses meant to create relief, even when they no longer serve you. This compassionate perspective can help soften shame and create space for choice, even when the urge still feels loud. Support for Restricting, Bingeing, and Purging Urges Whether your urge is to restrict, binge, purge, compensate, avoid food, or delay eating, this episode centers safety and connection. It offers reassurance that you are not broken for having urges and that even small shifts in support can matter. This is a listen for one minute at a time. Five percent safer still counts. Listen When You Need Support Right Now You can return to this episode whenever urges spike. Let it keep you company. Let it remind you that this moment has edges and that you are not alone in it. If you need additional support beyond this episode, working with an eating disorder therapist can help you build more tools for navigating urges with care and compassion. Sadly, she sprained her wrist. The group came through with lots of ideas for what to do when you can't knit and crochet, including needle felting, doing puzzles, watercolors, playing with art supplies, journaling and as MrsQuilt put it, "whining, reading, and actually paying attention to what is on the TV" I am wishing you all health, happiness, and strong crafting mojo in the new year! I stayed with him from December 5-21. Dad and I had a lovely visit from our friend Merry who came with an unexpected gift- a bracelet with beads made from my mom's funeral flowers in red (ruby slipper), yellow (yellow brick road) and white for home. Dan and I had a lovely double date night at the Irish pub with friends. I was able to see my 7 year old niece Hattie as Gretl in Sound of Music (twice!!!) Making Aunt Milly's cookies with Riley and Millie (and having a sleepover with them). Christmas Eve & Christmas Day were both lovely. Definitely different without my Mom and grandmother there but it was still a joy to be together. Our friend Gail joined us as she usually does and brought all sorts of fun games for us to play. The Sunday after Christmas, I was able to spend all afternoon with my grandmother, some of that alone. My friend Megg came over because she wanted to visit and say goodbye. We had dinner together after. My friend Laura came in for NYE. Small get together with friends at my Dad's turned into a real party, though most didn't stay until midnight. Megg wanted it to be a sparkly kind of night so Laura and I got outfits for the three of us at the consignment shop on the way over! Very silly fun. My cousin Mike and his husband Kyle came up from Florida. My grandmother's services were beautiful with contributions from lots of family members. While it was more stressful than mom's, and it was the worst form of deja vu having the same schedule for that exact same Thur/Fri two years in a row- my grandmother would be happy with how it all turned out.  Skiing on Saturday after the funeral. 7 of us, impromptu trip, icy conditions but we still had a blast.   Quote of the Week "Amidst the normal hard stuff is the abnormal hard stuff. You may be doing great, but no one great always had it great. At the end of each day, as you prepare for the next, I hope you take an inventory of your life, your thoughts and where you're headed. THE MOVE TO BEIJING AND XI ZHONGXUN'S 1962 PURGE Colleague Joseph Torigian. This segment explains that the book title comes from Mao's praise of Xi Zhongxun for prioritizing the party despite suffering. Episode Summary:In this episode of Explaining History, Nick takes a deep dive into the grim reality of the Soviet camp system. Drawing on Anne Applebaum's Gulag: A History, we explore how the camps evolved from disorganized prisons into a vast industrial complex of slave labour. We examine the "Great Terror" of 1937-38 not just as a political purge, but as a bureaucratic process driven by quotas and paranoia. Why did Stalin purge the very men—Yagoda, Yezhov, Berman—who built the Gulag system? How did the failure of forced industrialization lead to a search for scapegoats? And why were the death rates in the camps actually higher during the famine of 1932-33 and the war years than during the height of the political terror?Plus: A huge announcement for A-Level and IB History students! Nick unveils the dates for our upcoming live masterclasses on Russia, America, China, and Germany. Listen to the end for details on how to book your spot.Key Topics:The Great Terror: Why 1937-38 marked a watershed moment for the camps.Quotas of Death: How the NKVD assigned arrest targets to regions like production goals. The Purge of the Purgers: The downfall of the Gulag's founders.Clientelism and Paranoia: Why Stalin feared networks of loyalty within the Soviet bureaucracy.Books Mentioned:Gulag: A History by Anne ApplebaumEveryday Stalinism by Sheila FitzpatrickExplaining History helps you understand the 20th Century through critical conversations and expert interviews. Horror films have been a consistent draw for movie theaters, even in a post-pandemic, streaming world. And one of the most well-known production studios in horror is Blumhouse. The production house came on the scene in 2009 with Paranormal Activity, a low-budget found-footage film that became a smash hit spawning a franchise. Blumhouse would repeat this formula with The Purge and Insidious franchise. Now, Blumhouse is known for its more crowd pleasing scary movies like M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy’s (with the highly anticipated sequel releasing this week), but the studio has also taken risks on up and coming directors like Jordan Peele and Damien Chazelle. So, how does a horror production house continue to survive and turn a profit in today’s film industry? And why does horror seem to be a safe bet for box office returns. Joining us to discuss the current horror movie landscape is Abhijay Prakash, president of Blumhouse. You can read all about Blumhouse’s rise in their new book Horror’s New Wave: 15 Years of Blumhouse.

Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) Join Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA Operations Officer, as he dives into today's top stories shaping America and the world. In this episode of The Wright Report, Bryan breaks down the political firestorm surrounding the Trump Administration's double-tap strike on a Venezuelan narco boat, the escalating fight over Somali immigration and de-naturalization, the nationwide crackdown on unsafe foreign truck drivers, and a new plan to help American families have more children. Narco Boat Double Tap Becomes a Political Weapon: New reporting shows that SOCOM Commander Admiral Mitch Bradley ordered the second strike that killed two surviving cartel operatives after the initial hit on September 2. Republicans say it was a lawful action against confirmed narco-terrorists, while Democrats and Senator Rand Paul claim it may have violated rules of engagement. A lawsuit has now been filed by the family of one of the dead traffickers. Bryan argues the debate is being driven more by political rivalries than by legal facts.   Trump Escalates Fight Over Somali Migration: President Trump declared that Somali migrants who committed fraud or concealed their identities should be removed from the country and called Ilhan Omar and her political allies "garbage." Minnesota Democrats fired back, accusing Trump of racism and warning Somali residents to stay vigilant as ICE begins new removal operations focused on people with final deportation orders. Bryan explains the legal limits of de-naturalization and why it remains difficult without congressional reform.   De-Naturalization Concerns for Lawful Immigrants: In response to listener concerns, Bryan walks through federal rules on improper naturalization. Fraud, concealment, or a lack of "good moral character" during the citizenship process can lead to revocation, but the standard is high and must be proven in court. He notes that upcoming fights over the Senate filibuster will determine whether the administration can broaden those standards.   Federal Crackdown on Dangerous Foreign Truckers: The Department of Transportation found that thousands of CDL training programs, many catering to migrants, issued licenses without meeting basic standards. Nearly 3,000 schools face revocation within 30 days, and more than 4,000 others have been warned. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is pressuring states, including Minnesota and Texas, to end Obama-era rules that allowed truckers to pass without reading or speaking English.   Tax Refund Tightening and State Resistance: Treasury officials are closing loopholes that allowed illegal migrants to receive tax refunds, while the Department of Agriculture is withholding food stamp funds from states that refuse to share immigration data about recipients. New York, California, and Minnesota are preparing lawsuits to block the changes.   A Push to Raise America's Birthrate: The White House unveiled a private donation of $6.25 billion from the Dell family to boost "Trump Accounts," which offer savings for newborns and children under age 10. The accounts can later be used for education, home purchases, or starting a business. Bryan explains how the plan aims to counter America's record-low fertility rate and spark renewed interest in marriage and family life.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: double tap narco boat strike, Admiral Mitch Bradley SOCOM, Pete Hegseth unlawful orders debate, Trump Somali migrants Minnesota, Ilhan Omar de-naturalization rules, DOT migrant CDL crackdown, Sean Duffy licensing reforms, Treasury migrant tax refunds, Trump Accounts fertility initiative, Dell family donation

This Day in Legal History: Morgan v. VirginiaOn December 3, 1946, the NAACP filed the pivotal case Morgan v. Virginia, challenging state-enforced segregation on interstate buses. The case arose after Irene Morgan, a Black woman, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Greyhound bus traveling from Virginia to Maryland in 1944. Arrested and fined under Virginia law, Morgan appealed her conviction with the support of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Thurgood Marshall, who would later become the first Black Supreme Court Justice, argued the case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The legal argument hinged on the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which grants Congress—not individual states—the power to regulate interstate commerce. Marshall argued that Virginia's segregation law placed an undue burden on interstate travel and was thus unconstitutional. In a 7–1 decision issued in June 1946, the Court agreed, holding that states could not impose segregation on interstate passengers.Though the ruling did not end segregation on all public transportation, it was a critical legal breakthrough. It limited the reach of Jim Crow laws and marked one of the earliest Supreme Court victories for the civil rights movement. The decision also served as a foundation for future rulings, including Boynton v. Virginia (1960), and inspired direct action like the Freedom Rides of the early 1960s.Morgan v. Virginia helped establish a constitutional framework for challenging racially discriminatory laws under federal authority. It demonstrated the NAACP's strategy of incremental legal challenges and the importance of judicial victories in the broader civil rights struggle.A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a law that would strip Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood and similar organizations in 22 states. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani ruled that the provision, part of the Republican-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, likely violates the Constitution's Spending Clause by retroactively imposing ambiguous conditions on state Medicaid participation. The law bars Medicaid funding for nonprofit reproductive health providers that offer abortions and received over $800,000 in Medicaid funds during fiscal year 2023.Talwani issued a preliminary injunction, temporarily halting the law's enforcement in the states that sued, including California, New York, and Connecticut, along with the District of Columbia. However, she stayed her ruling for seven days to allow the Trump administration time to appeal. The judge warned that enforcing the law would increase healthcare costs and reduce access to preventive services like birth control and screenings.Planned Parenthood welcomed the ruling, calling the law unconstitutional and harmful. The organization reported that at least 20 health centers have closed since the law began taking effect in September. States argued the law forced an unexpected change to Medicaid operations and undermined their authority to choose eligible healthcare providers.US judge blocks Trump from cutting Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in 22 states | ReutersThe Trump administration has dismissed at least seven immigration judges from New York City's immigration court, located at 26 Federal Plaza, a central site for immigration enforcement and protests. This move is part of a broader pattern under President Trump's second term, with over 100 immigration judges reportedly removed nationwide since January, according to the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Critics say these firings are worsening backlogs at a time when arrests and deportations are increasing.Immigration judges operate under the Department of Justice, not the independent federal judiciary, and are considered inferior officers who can be dismissed by the president or attorney general. The Justice Department declined to comment on the terminations. Among those fired was Amiena Khan, the court's assistant chief immigration judge and former president of the National Association of Immigration Judges, who had previously opposed efforts to dismantle the judges' union.Khan and six other judges, all women, had their names removed from the court's staff directory, with five appointed by Democratic administrations and two during Trump's first term. These dismissals follow similar firings in San Francisco, Boston, and elsewhere. One former judge in Ohio has filed a lawsuit, alleging her termination was due to discrimination based on sex, national origin, and political beliefs.Trump administration fires numerous New York immigration judges | ReutersRahmanullah Lakanwal, the suspect in a deadly Washington, D.C. ambush that killed one National Guard member and critically injured another, pleaded not guilty during his first court appearance. He participated remotely from a hospital bed and was ordered held without bond due to the violent nature of the attack, which occurred just blocks from the White House. The judge cited the “sheer terror” of the incident in denying release.Prosecutors allege that Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, traveled from Washington state to D.C. with the intent to carry out the shooting. He reportedly opened fire while shouting “Allahu akbar,” fatally shooting 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and injuring 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, both West Virginia National Guard members deployed to aid law enforcement. Lakanwal was subdued by military personnel and a Secret Service officer after being shot.He faces four charges, including first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill while armed. Lakanwal's defense highlighted his lack of criminal history, but prosecutors emphasized the premeditated nature of his actions. His immigration status has drawn political attention—he entered the U.S. under a resettlement program launched during the Biden administration and was granted asylum under Trump, making the case a focal point in renewed debates over immigration policy.Washington shooting suspect pleads not guilty to murder, ordered detained | Reuters This is a public episode. When Christ appears, Christians will be like Him, and this hope inspires believers to live with purity. Those who persist in sin reveal that they do not know Christ, while those who live righteously demonstrate that they belong to Him. A defining characteristic of God's children is their love for fellow believers. They are called to love other Christians in a world filled with hatred and malice. Hatred brings spiritual death, while love brings life and unity. By following God's commands and believing in Jesus, they gain assurance before Him. This confidence comes from knowing that God abides in them through the Spirit He has freely given.  We find our identity in being children of God, and that truth changes how we live. We are not shaped by the world's view of us; rather, we are shaped by the love the Father has shown us. Our hope of becoming like Christ compels us to live with purpose and purity. We cannot claim to follow Him while embracing sin; rather, we must abandon sin and move from death into life. In that life, loving other believers is not optional but essential. Our actions must align with our words, demonstrating kindness, grace, and support. When we love one another well and obey the commandments of our Savior, we defy the world's evil and stand boldly for the truth.  Loving Father, thank You for welcoming us as Your children and promising us eternal life in Your presence. Give us the courage to honor Your grace by pursuing purity and rejecting lawlessness. Root out any sin among us and help us turn away from it immediately, proving ourselves to be Your children. Purge us of any hatred akin to Cain, and help us learn to love fellow believers deeply and with a willingness to sacrifice for their good. May our hearts never condemn us but encourage us to love people and engage in willful obedience to Your commandments in Jesus' name.   Thought Questions: If God is your Father, and you will one day see Him, how does that impact your pursuit of purity, discipline, and ongoing righteousness? If Jesus' victory destroys the devil's work, why do we sometimes still choose sin? How will we react differently to our sin than the world?   How important is love of the brethren? What helps you grow in serving God's people, and what motivates you to serve sacrificially?

The Purge by a Novel and Mao's Fear of Revisionism. Joseph Turigian explains that Xi Zhongxun's 1962 downfall stemmed from supporting the publication of a fictionalized biography of his deceased mentor, Liu Zhidan. Mao Zedong saw the novel as a counter-revolutionary plot and a manifestation of revisionism, fearing that others would claim credit for leading the revolution. Mao aimed to transform persecuted individuals through humiliation and torment, unlike Stalinist purges, which emphasized execution. Xi Zhongxun was brutally kidnapped by Red Guards in 1967 and subjected to struggle sessions as Mao sought to continuously "rebaptize" the party in revolutionary spirit. Indigo CEO Heather Reisman, teacher Laurie Allen, politician Selina Robinson, professor of medicine Ted Rosenberg – all were arguably targeted for their views and actions, not for their ethnicity. But does that mean it wasn't discrimination or hate?
