Alto saxophonist Erena Terakubo, from Sapporo, Japan, began her recording career early, releasing her first album when she was only 15 years old. Inspired by a saxophone-playing M&M doll, Erena developed an interest in music that led her to become a notable figure in contemporary jazz. Her journey inclu0des playing in big bands in Sapporo and preferring jazz over classical music. In this episode, Erena Terakubo exuberantly shares her early influences, including J Fusion and musicians like Charlie Parker and David Sanborn. She shares insights into her life in the United States, cultural adjustments, and the challenges she encounters in New York City's jazz scene. With guidance from fellow alto sax player Vincent Herring, Erena navigated the business side of jazz. Erena talks about overcoming initial nervousness, gaining confidence, and arranging music for big band performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center. She highlights the significance of emotional expression in music and how her influences have shaped her improvisational style. Additionally, Erena discusses her experiences as a woman in the predominantly male jazz industry, her ongoing project, and her future goals. This episode delves in her story and explores various aspects of jazz. Erena acquired the nickname, North Bird. Find out at the end of this episode how she earned it. Hello! Today we have our final HDYM episode of the year and it is with none other than the incredibly talented Jerome Blazé ✭ I speak to him fresh off the back of the release of his sophomore album ‘
After spending their first couple of years refining their sound and learning their craft better, Gold Coast rock outfit Chavez Cartel are finally starting to bear the fruits of that labour, having also managed to conquer the UK and USA in recent years. With a classic rock sound embedded with elements of grunge, Chavez Cartel found pieces falling into place earlier this year with an appearance at Big Sound 24 introducing the band to a wider range of possibilities and contacts than ever before.Harnessing this renewed vigour, the band headed for the studio to begin the next phase of their musical journey, with the result being new single All I Know, which showcases the evolving sonic world in which Chavez Cartel find themselves gravitating toward.HEAVY caught up with frontman Ben Simpson to get more details."It's a little bit 90s sounding - like a lot of our stuff is, I think," he explained of All I Know. "It's got some 90s elements in there. It sounds like a dirty Oasis track to me, if I strip it back. A punky, dirtier Brit-Pop song. The song itself is about grinding, day-to-day life. Stuck in traffic. Back and forth from work, feeling like you're wasting away. It's a bit of a miserable approach to working class life, but it's got a bit of life in it, so it's not a miserable song. It just touches on the misery of some days."In the full interview, we discussed All I Know in greater detail and its potential inclusion in their upcoming album. Ben described the song as a bit of a miserable approach to working-class life, but with a bit of life in it. We also discussed the concept of the film clip that reflects this theme. We spoke about the band's transition from releasing smaller EPs to an album. Ben expressed his dissatisfaction with EPs, stating that they are not as valued as albums. He mentioned that the band is now ready to release a full album, having accumulated a body of work. Ben also shared that they have learned more about production, including vocal layering and counter melodies, which will be incorporated into their new album. The conversation also touched on the changing attention spans of people due to social media and the internet, with Ben expressing his preference for longer, more immersive music experiences.Ben touched on the band's continued musical growth and clarified that the changes were natural and not a deliberate strategy to veer off into different genres. He explained that the band started as purely grunge, but over time, they added elements from punk and Britpop, while maintaining their grungy sound. Ben confirmed that the singles they released were a good representation of their current and future sound. We also spoke about upcoming shows and plenty more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Living in regional areas puts you behind the eight-ball somewhat when it comes to promoting your music. For a start, the population is drastically less than the capital areas, which presents a plethora of associated problems starting with a target audience. It takes a combination of talent, persistence, planning and vision to just get your toes wet, which is exactly what Mackay metal outfit Same Pains possess plenty of.Despite being a band for a short amount of time, their collective experience has seen the members share the stage with noted Australian acts such as Northlane, Polaris, Alpha Wolf and Ocean Grove. Earlier this year the band played two showcase gigs at BigSound and this weekend perform at Rhythm & Reef Festival in their hometown, which will be headlined by Bliss N Eso - not exactly from the metal realm but still one of the big fish when it comes to Australian music. But all of that will be superseded today when Same Pains release their first collection of music in the form Closure: An Aggregate, with guitarist Ben Burrows joining HEAVY to outline things in greater detail. We outlined their promotional strategies and release schedule, with Ben reflecting on the band's unique approach of releasing singles prior to the full collection. The title Closure was explored, with Ben explaining it signifies the end of a chapter and the start of a new journey, while also touching on the band's musical evolution and diverse influences. The conversation also addressed the challenges and opportunities within regional music scenes, drawing from their experiences in Mackay and Cairns. Ben shared his efforts to organize local shows and the importance of community engagement, as well as their upcoming performance at the Rhythm & Reef Festival. He expressed hopes for greater exposure for heavy acts in regional areas and discussed future plans for shows in Brisbane and Sydney, as well as the potential release of another EP next June, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We had the pleasure of interviewing RedHook over Zoom video!RedHook are a fiercely independent, shapeshifting alt-rock foursome from Sydney, Australia who've quickly accumulated a global fanbase and tens of millions of streams through their powerful songwriting and captivating live show.Featuring the core creative duo of Emmy Mack and Craig Wilkinson, two strangers from regional New South Wales whose paths collided after moving to Sydney in 2017, RedHook combine with young gun drummer Alex Powys and seasoned bassist Ned Jankovic to create heartfelt, attitude-filled and relatable alternative rock music that consistently defies classification. The strength of their debut single ‘Minute On Fire' in 2018 was enough to attract the interest of one of the lead promoters of the UK's iconic Download Festival, who swiftly invited RedHook over to play. The band were then snapped up by The Hen House Artist Management (worldwide) and inked booking deals with New World Artists (AUS) and Wasserman (UK/EU), going on to conquer some of Australia's biggest music festival stages (Download, Good Things, Stonefest, BIGSOUND). They also completed their debut international tour (supporting metal titans Three Days Grace across the UK & Europe), launched their own gender diversity-inspired alternative festival in Sydney, 'UsFest', and undertook four complete Australian tours (selling out the Melbourne and Sydney legs of their own debut headline tour). As RedHook's global fan base grew steadily with each single release and live show, many big things followed. The band were named triple j Unearthed feature artist, Kerrang! Radio feature artist and were invited to host the ABC's iconic rage program. They've consistently featured as one of the top 50 most-played artists on triple j Unearthed every year since 2019.2021 saw RedHook release their long-awaited debut EP ‘Bad Decisions' which has ticked over 13 million Spotify streams and had its two lead singles added to rotation on triple j. The record earned praise from Kerrang! (UK), Rock Sound (UK), Rolling Stone (AUS) and many more, even scooping a 2022 AIR Independent Music Awards nomination for best punk EP or album.RedHook continued their steady rise across 2022 with their debut performances at Australia's UNIFY Gathering, Groovin' The Moo and boutique festival Rolling Sets, as well as playing one of the world's most iconic rock festivals Rock AM Ring/Rock im Park in Germany alongside the likes of Green Day and Muse, accompanied by a second tour of Europe supporting The Faim.Their own headline ‘Bring Ya Mates' tour was also a huge success with multiple sold out shows around Australia as it emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. This was followed by a mammoth 28-date, two-month-long regional Australian tour as main support for metalcore titans In Hearts Wake and a triumphant return the Good Things festival stage alongside Bring Me The Horizon and Deftones, where RedHook made history as the first band to grace the lineup twice. In May 2022, RedHook returned with ‘Jabberwocky' their most gut-wrenching single to date, which was immediately added to triple j high rotation and added to the cover of Spotify's popular ‘All New Rock' Playlist. Follow-up singles ‘SAY' and ‘Soju' Ft. Sly Withers have both since been added to full rotation on triple j.RedHook recently released their long-anticipated debut album, Postcard From A Living Hell!We want to hear from you! IMPORTANT NOTE: Masters of VGM Season 2 starts June 1st, and is slated to kick off with Nerd Noise Radio C1E76: "The Big Sound of the Little Guy - vol. 2". To prime the pump of excitement for MoVGM in general, as well as to offer a "compare and contrast" between the incoming, much more polished and measured and matured (and much more well-produced) sequel, and this much more enthusiastic, revolutionary, optimistic, and "heart-ful" example of early, clunky-but-exuberant NNR magic, we are re-running the original ahead of time. I am eager to receive feedback on what everyone things of vol 1 vs vol 2. I think vol 2 is "better", but vol 1 is "more important". I also think vol 1 is more "joyful", even if more "awkward". But tell me what YOU think!! They also each contain exactly one track composed by......ME - in fact, in this original episode, it's even the opening track! Masters of VGM can be found at www.mastersofvgm.com as well as on Twitter and Discord, and perhaps also other places. NNR will be just one of some 20 or 30 different VGM podcasts. So, please check out the entire collection, and give the other great shows some love as well! :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is Episode 30 for Theme Thursday, June 14, 2018. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS: http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Here's today's episode: https://youtu.be/73kM8YsRUdU Additionally, there are YouTube Playlists you can follow, both an "All Channels" Feed (recommended), as well as channel-specific feeds. We welcome Psycho Spice, aka Emmy Mack from one of Australia's rising heavy metal acts, RedHook. It's shaping up to be a defining year for this viciously talented frontwoman, and Emmy starts us off by talking about the early days of performing, including her first band Smokin' Mirrors and the influences of notable acts such as Chester Bennington and Axl Rose. Fast forward to now with RedHook, and joining forces with ther bandmates Craig Wilkinson, Alex Powys, and Ned Jankovic, the quartet have formed a chemistry that has been catching the attention from the likes of Kerrang, Rock Sounds, and even Rolling Stone. Make no mistake, as they are here to stay with their debut album on the horizon, titled “Postcard From A Living Hell.” RedHook have combined elements of metalcore, electronica, and rap, and have surely found their established sound that will keep the mosh pits circling into oblivion. Emmy also talks about performing at revered music festivals such as Download, Good Things, and BigSound, and the elements of grasping a persona when on stage. There's a sense of therapy in performing live, as Emmy taps into a whole other dimension of herself that she may not be able to reach elsewhere, this also includes the in-depth songwriting in the lyrical compositions. With RedHook, Emmy has found her home, and we could not be more excited for what the future holds for her and her bandmates. We end this interview with the Hot Seat, so you'll want to tune in to this one. Listen now and be sure to buy and stream RedHook's debut, “Postcard From A Living Hell,” out worldwide on April 21. GIVE EM HELL EMMY.Stay connected with RedHook, visit: https://weareredhook.com/, https://www.instagram.com/weareredhook/ and https://www.facebook.com/weareredhook/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/
We had the pleasure of interviewing Blusher Zoom video!Blusher are here making sparkly, energetic pop to soundtrack your night out. This Melbourne-based trio made a huge splash in 2022 when they released “Softly Spoken,” a slice of euphoric indie-pop. It was the first song they ever made together and the success of the track took the trio by surprise. But 2023 is primed to be bigger and better for the group: Blusher are releasing their latest single “Dead End” and gearing up for an EP, live shows and soon, a global takeover. In Blusher's metaphorical teen rom-com of a band, all three members are the leads. They share vocals on many of their songs and swap instruments during the live shows. They all produce and write together, utilizing their individual experiences cutting their teeth as solo artists before forming the band. “Our first day in the studio felt like an exciting combining of forces and we quickly realised how compatible we were as songwriters,” says member Lauren Coutts, who runs lead on the production of Blusher's music. Before officially meeting, their shared pop tastes and sounds had made them each familiar with each other in the wider Melbourne music community. Jade and Lauren were first officially introduced during a Zoom writing camp in late 2021.“Softly Spoken” would launch the wildest year of the girls' lives after it was released in 2022. On the day they dropped it, they were at a songwriting camp on a beach together and partied through the night. The next day, Lauren had received a message from their now-managers Powerhouse Management's Jamie-Rose Fowler and Charlotte Ried, who officially came on board soon after. By September, they played their first show at BIGSOUND, an Australian music festival and industry conference. Blusher spent months in a “boot camp” of sorts with a movement coach who encouraged them to go out dancing together. The final result was a highly choreographed set that allowed them to show off their individual multitude of talents. Minutes after stepping off stage for the first time, the group signed with Atlantic Records. Blusher spent the rest of 2022 in studio sessions working on their debut EP. “Dead End” and “Softly Spoken” tease a project focused on female friendship, inspired by the dance floor catharsis of heroes like Robyn, Kesha, the Black Eyed Peas, and MGMT. The songs track a night out, one full of break-ups and make-ups. We want to hear from you! KEY TAKEAWAYS: LaunchLeft's mission is to highlight and empower artists and give them a platform to launch their careers. There is a cultural brainwashing that holds to the tenant that if you are rich, you are successful. However, the flip side of that coin is, are you happy and enjoying life? Shouldn't you enjoy the process and not only concentrate on the reward? Collaboration can be painful, but it can produce a better product when people from diverse situations and ideas come together to form an exciting product better than one person could do alone.
