Interview by Kris PetersSydney based death metal outfit Anoxia are one of the rare breed of bands who are prepared to live and die by the sword they carry.By bringing a new sound to a bygone era of heavy metal, Anoxia embraces the legacy of death metal bands that have come before them such as Morbid Angel, Suffocation and Death, but sprinkle enough of their own - more modernized - DNA through the menu to make a fresh and tasty new main course where brutality is the King.After announcing their arrival with their 2020 Demo Torturous Degradation, Anoxia hit the stage sprinting, dropping their debut EP Languish In Suffering in 2023 which has seen the band amongst the first port of call for international touring acts such as Skeletal Remains and homegrown machines Psycroptic and King Parrot.But it is with the impending arrival of their debut full-length Revel In Sin on April 17 that Anoxia looks set to launch a global assault on the metal scene. Building on the crushing devastation promised with Languish In Suffering, Revel In Sin ramps up the intent, delivering more hooks, more pace, and more intensity.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Elias and bass player James to dig deeper."We released our EP in February 2023," Elias began. "So, it's been a little while now. We've just been touring a lot, playing a lot of shows, then took some time off to write and came up with Revel in Sin, so we're very excited. We feel like it's the next level in our progression as a band and as musicians, writing and just growing by fusing our old-school death metal style with some thrash metal elements as well. James came on board last August just to in the finalization of the writing stage as well, so he'll be on deck for the album launch as well."We press them both about the musical direction on Revel In Sin."We are all about the old school, early 90s US death metal," Elias affirmed. "So we're just building on that. The EP was four songs which we're proud of, but the album is just us levelling it up a bit in terms of speed, diversity and dynamics. It's very much in the vein of the EP, but just a few notches up from where we left off. There's different dynamics - fast in some places then slow - so we're just changing it up, but focussing on those hooks and keeping it intense."In the full interview, Elias and James talk more about Revel in Sin, highlighting the band's evolution in musical complexity by merging old-school death metal with thrash elements. Joey had the pleasure of chatting to King Parrot vocalist, Matt Young. They discuss the upcoming Pantera tour, breaking it in and out of Australia and sobriety.

After a relatively quiet year by their standards - which included shows earlier this year with Pantera - Australia's favourite slice of brutality, King Parrot, are set to end the year with a band with their When The Weed Meets The Speed Australian Tour which kicks off at Mo's Desert Clubhouse on November 6.King Parrot have always done things their own way and at their own pace, and as such not too many rumblings have been heard from fans despite the band's inactivity on the touring circuit.They know that the boys must be getting shit done.And get shit done they have, bringing out North Carolina's stoner rockers Weedeater to join Australian acts Astrodeath and Choof for a tour that promises as much feverish musical chaos as you can stand. Between the four bands, there's elements of doom, sludge, thrash, stoner, grind and deathcore, and you don't have to be a scientist to know that that is a recipe just waiting for sonic disaster.The reason for King Parrot's neglecting of their flock? A new album. And one which vocalist Matt Young promises will be everything you expect from King Parrot and more. Then there's the little things about a European and UK tour early next year with a band called Pantera. You might have heard of them?Even when they're quiet, they are rowdy. Bless their Alisterus scapularis (look it up).Not knowing where to start, HEAVY sat down for a chat with Youngy earlier this week to try and get up to speed on what King Parrot have been doing while they've been doing nothing."Mate, we're ready to go," he said of the upcoming run of shows. "It's good man, it's exciting. We had a couple of months off playing shows and all that sort of stuff because we've been really focussing on the new record and getting the finishing touches done. Just spending time in the studio and focussing on that. Now it's getting to that point where we're ready to play again. Ready to hit the road and do what we do, then hopefully start unleashing this new record next year. In the meantime, we're gonna smash out a big Aussie tour and get around the country and see our people."In the full interview, Youngy expressed enthusiasm about supporting the music scene by bringing up-and-coming bands on tour. We spoke about the diverse range of bands on the tour, describing it as "fucking brutal" and "awesome". Matt also highlighted the importance of having time to hang out with the bands in different locations, which he believes will contribute to the tour's success.Matt mentioned that they usually rehearse a few days before the tour, focusing on putting on the best show possible. He also shared that they have played many shows and tours, and have a good understanding of what works best for them. He also discussed the importance of audience interaction and energy during their performances. Matt confirmed that they love audience banter and feeding off their energy.Matt discussed the progress of their new album, which has been in the works for the best part of a year. He mentioned that they have been working on it organically, with a focus on jamming and improvisation, which he believes adds to the fluidity of their songs. Matt also shared that they have been recording in a studio, taking their time with the mixing process and getting feedback from everyone involved. He expressed excitement about the album's release next year and the opportunity for fans to hear new songs at their upcoming shows. While polar opposites of the musical spectrum, Weedeater and King Parrot connect where it matters. Todd Hansen is one of those rare breed of musicians that is just plain nice.Almost too nice.Known, loved and respected for bashing the skins with bands like Headkase, The Berzerker, F.U.C and King Parrot, it is his contributions to things outside of and closely related to music that makes him not only a great skinsman but also a champion bloke.In his spare time Todd also teaches drums, lends his chops as a session drummer, travels the world doing what he loves, produces an entertaining podcast called Drumwell and generally spreads and shares his passion with all those who come within earshot of him. No ego. No judgement. No stress.But it is his work with charity organisations that is perhaps closest to his heart. Interview by Kris PetersSydney's merchants of sludge Black Rheno have hit the road again, this time on an East Coast tour of Australia to celebrate… well, to celebrate that they are a touring band and that's what touring bands do!Since announcing themselves with the heavy as fuck and funnier than childbirth single No Time For Numb Nuts back in 2016 Black Rheno have epitomised the very spirit of Australian music, often driving ten hours to play a show while allowing themselves nothing more than cheese and crackers for dinner so they didn't run out of petrol between gigs.You may smirk, but I have seen it first-hand.With a dedication to touring and music almost as complete as their ability to entertain, Black Rheno are one of those bands that manage to make an impression everywhere they go, even sometimes being invited to come back.That tenacious will to do what they love paid handsome dividends earlier this year when Black Rheno joined good mates and equally hard-working Aussie metal larrikins King Parrot for a show with Pantera in Adelaide. Not only was it reward for effort, but it also got the trio so wrapped up in their own achievements they decided then and there to hit the road once more with one thought, and one objective only. To tell the world exactly who they are and why they are here with one simple question that has become the catch cry for the whole tour.Who The Fuck Are Black Rheno?Of course, HEAVY has our own ideas of how that question should be answered, but we felt obliged to speak with frontman Ryan Miller first before announcing it publicly to see if he could sway our opinion one way or another. With the first three shows completed last weekend, we start by asking how their quest for recognition has gone thus far."Good," he enthused. "It was our first time out at Penrith. Interview by Kris PetersKnotfest Australia 2024 is fast approaching, with less than one month before the traveling music extravaganza hits Melbourne for the first show on March 21.Headlined by Pantera, Disturbed and Lamb Of God, it would be easy to overlook some of the other bands on the bill out of pure excitement for the headliners, but do so at your own peril.One of the best things about festivals is the opportunity to hear fresh bands for the first time. Bands that might not have crossed your radar yet. Personally, I have discovered some of my all-time favourite bands this way, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.One such band to keep an ear out for at Knotfest this year is Canadian deathcore wrecking crew Brand Of Sacrifice, a band rapidly on the rise overseas but making their first visit to this side of the world.With their recent signing to Nuclear Blast Records and release of heavy as fuck single Purge, Brand Of Sacrifice are up for the challenge of winning over a new legion of fans, with vocalist Kyle Anderson joining HEAVY to talk more."I'm very excited and definitely looking forward to seeing Disturbed," he smiled. "I haven't seen them yet."Despite the fact it was just over one month away at the time of this chat, we ask Kyle if he has allowed himself to get excited so far out."Oh, I've been excited ever since we got the offer," he replied. "It's been a dream. I've never been (to Australia before) and the band has never been either."We run through the line-up and ask who he is most looking forward to playing with other than Disturbed."I'm looking forward to them," he affirmed. "Pantera and Lamb Of God are legends too. As far as some of the newer bands, Thy Art Is Murder are great, and they're from Australia, so we've gotta plug them. "It's been a long time since we've been there, so we're excited to get back."We run through the line-up and ask if there's any bands that Asking Alexandria haven't played with before."Honestly… no, I think we've played with pretty much everybody on this line-up," he laughed. "We were lucky enough to do a lot of the festivals in this last European run we did. On the off dates of the festivals we played with Disturbed, and those guys were awesome. What an amazing band and incredible to see live. Pantera… I mean, that was just a whole thing, you know. That was a huge party. Lamb of God - honestly, one of my favourite bands growing up, and my good friend Art is their drummer now, which is crazy because we toured with Art for years when he was in Winds Of Plague, so it's really cool. It's gonna be huge. There's gonna be a lot of friends and a lot of familiar faces. A couple of people we've not played with… nah, honestly. I've got it in front of me and everybody, really. It has incubated and hosted some of this country's biggest acts, such as King Parrot, Amyl & The Sniffers, Magic Dirt, The Beasts Of Bourbon, The Datsuns, The Hard Ons, Mudhoney, The White Stripes and the list goes on.The building itself is 152 years old, but has been operating as a live music venue since 1981. If you'll allow me to do the maths for you, that's 41 years of punk, rock and metal marinated into the walls of this iconic structure.In recent months, The Tote has been put on the market; not simply the business but the entire building. It has a hefty price tag of 6.6 million dollars, and unsurprisingly the Melbourne music community is extremely nervous that we're about to witness the demise of one of the city's most important hubs for rock and roll.The heroes of this story are power couple Shane and Leanne, who have been at the helm of another legendary Melbourne music venue, The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar, for around eight years now.They have embarked on a quest which they have titled “The Last Chance To Save The Tote!”Shane and Leanne have dedicated their entire adult lives to working in and running venues and they eat, sleep and breathe the city's live music scene.Shane says The Tote is a venue he has wanted to own and run for 20 years, and has been waiting for his chance to swoop in. But he was never expecting that when finally, his chance arose, that the sale would include the actual building itself, and therefore was not prepared for the price tag associated with that.“I've wanted to run The Tote forever,” Shane told HEAVY, “simply because I love going to The Tote!”“We knew that at some stage it would come up for sale, but we were kind of blindsided by the fact that the entire building was up for sale and the price that's on it… it's not doable.”Shane isn't exactly the type of person to let pesky finances deter him from a crusade to save this venue, however.Together, he and Leanne and the patronage of The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar have begun a crusade to raise funds for half of the asking price of the building, in a bid to save it from falling into the hands of developers, who Shane fears will convert this piece of history into “shitty apartments.”“With a six-million-dollar price tag, it's unattainable for someone who is passionate about music,” Shane laments. He's calling upon the Australian music community to rally and attempt to achieve the seemingly impossible and ensure magical music moments continue to take seed within the walls of The Tote.The deadline is this Thursday April 6 th .“The time is now,” Shane says. “Don't protect the walls, protect what happens within those walls. Such is the quality of the recording and the awesomeness of the track, HEAVY felt compelled to track Headbore down and find out more.Earlier this week we sat down with bass player Mike and vocalist Fish to find out more."That wasn't actually a single release," Fish laughed of the live video for Digging My Grave. "It's just alive clip. I think we played it for the first time a few months back. We played it at the Soilwork show and I think someone posted it on YouTube and it seems to have gone down pretty well. Interview by Kris PetersBoston metal outfit Unearth return to Australia for the first time in over eight years next week for a run of shows in support of their new album which will be out this May.After having to postpone due to COVID in 2020, Unearth finally get to deliver on their promise to be back with a series of headline and festival shows starting in Adelaide on January 20.They will be supported by The Ascended and Complexant in Adelaide, Canberra and Newcastle as well as headlining the borderline Destruction festival with those same two bands plus King Parrot and local supports in Brisbane (Jan 21), Sydney (Jan 27) and Melbourne (Jan 28).Vocalist Trevor Phipps joined HEAVY earlier today to discuss the shows and new music."We were scheduled for May 2020," he began, "and it couldn't happen for obvious reasons. Matt (The Ascended) stuck with us the whole time. Every three or four months during the pandemic he would reach out to us, saying that he wanted to keep the tour going, and sure enough here we are ready to come back. So he's a true legend for seeing this thing through and we're very excited to be coming back. This will be our eighth time. Such is the wealth of talent currently in Australian music that you don't even have to win a battle of the bands style competition to be a winner.When Melbourne melodic metal outfit Primitive failed to win their place on the local Good Things line-up last week their disappointment was only shortlived.Not long afterwards the band got the nod to support Soulfly at both of their Melbourne and Sydney side shows, going a long way to numbing the pain of missing out on the full festival.It has been a massive year already for Primitive, who released their well received EP With The Rats And Snakes in August and have been making waves ever since. They close this year out by supporting Exenobiotic in Melbourne and see in the New Year playing alongside King Parrot and Unearth.Not bad for a band who are less than half a decade old.Frontman Tim Gauci sat down with HEAVY to discuss a whirlwind last half of 2022."Honestly, it was probably one of the most fun shows we have had," he enthused of the Good Things battle. "We had the two shows, the first heat and the final, and because it was done during the middle of the week it was a little bit of a nervous thing figuring out if we were gonna get people there or not but because there was an effort to go there and support our friends and support us during the week - it was free entry - it ended up just being a really good, fun vibe. The shows were great. We played as best as we could. I won't give us any less credit for not winning, but I think we did a great job and had a great time. I can't say anything bad about it. All of the other bands were great and we met a lot of new people and made some friends along the way so there's really nothing more you could ask for. Other than getting a festival slot of course (laughs). Melbourne hard rock outfit High As Hell have certainly done it hard as hell in their brief existence.After releasing their debut album Razorblade Dream during the bleak COVID years and not being able to fully tour or promote their music, High As Hell have wasted little time in rectifying that situation with a string of high energy gigs up and down the East Coast of Australia.Along the way the band have gathered a continually growing legion of fans who gravitate towards their stoner meets metal edged sound and now plan to give their debut release the respect it deserves by releasing it again, but this time on vinyl.To celebrate, High As Hell plan to commandeer The Old Bar in Melbourne on November 25 and are bringing with them their good mates from Duneeater, The Balls and Flying Dutchman to wreak havok.To tell us more HEAVY tracked down vocalist/guitarist Fazz Hellman to find out more information."In my eyes this one's gonna be one for the ages," he enthused. "It's a fully stacked line-up - and I know people say this shit all the time - but the bands are all of my favourite local bands. It's gonna be a very cool night."As mentioned the initial release of Razorblade Dream co-incided with lockdowns and the uncertainty of COVID, so having the chance to re-release the album on vinyl is of special significance to High As Hell."It's gotta be done," Fazz laughed. "People still love having that hard copy of music. There's still a lot of old school crew out there, and even the younger crew as well. It's just good to have artwork and something in your hands. We will have the full merch stand including vinyl going on the night. That's become a huge thing for us since having Youngy on board. Ten years ago an album called Bite Your Head Off was released by a little known Australian grindcore band called King Parrot.When I say little known, they already had a passionate and loyal fanbase that was growing by the minute, but the band had yet to reach the almost crossover mainstream acceptance which surprisingly opens for them today.Their debut EP the previous year, The Stench Of Hardcore Pub Trash had offered glimpses of King Parrot's ferocity and musicianship, spawning the singles Epileptic Butcher and Psycotherapy & Valium, but at that stage that's all it was.Potential.Then Bite Your Head Off landed and smacked every person within wingspan square between the eyes with its blending of metal, punk and attitude that pretty much overnight created a new genre all of its own and King Parrot were well and truly on their way to taking flight.The first single from that album, Shit On The Liver, came with a film clip that was both brutal and downright hilarious and introduced the Parrot boys - and particularly the hairy walking one liner that also happened to play bass - Mr Slatts Everyday to a generation of music lovers that had previously only ever flirted with music of such extreme nature.That film clip racked up the numbers practically overnight and King Parrot started touring their proverbial asses off not long after, seemingly not content until they had converted the entire planet to their way of thinking.Now, ten years after that initial shot fired in anger, King Parrot are inviting the King Parrot Army to celebrate the birth of what will be - if not already is - an Australian metal band of world repute comprising a bunch of five larrikins who just want to have fun and play music together with a special anniversary show at Max Watts in Melbourne on October 29 where the band will play that album in full for the first time ever.HEAVY sat down for a special one on one with vocalist Matt Young to discuss the journey so far.With King Parrot playing the ferociously quick debut album in it's entiurety we start by asking Youngy what the band plans on doing after that 20 minutes of album time is done."We've been jamming the last few weeks," he laughed, "getting all the songs together. There's a bunch of songs on there that we've never played... we've never actually played the title track of the album (laughs). So we've been working on that which has been great. We're playing that for the first time and there's a bunch of other songs on there that we haven't played in close to 8 or 10 years so it's been great just re-learning them all and putting it all into a set and a way that flows really well. Just going 'fuck, that's actually cool and works well', and it doesn't have any of the songs from the other two albums or the latest EP so we were really happy with how it's come out. The running time obviously drags out, we might play a couple of other bits and pieces at the end... We just love playing live, that's the main thing for us. We just love getting up there and doing it. It's gonna be a lot of fun. We've put a lot of work into it so it's gonna be good."It's fair to say Bite Your Head Off was - and still is - unlike anything heard in Australian metal for a long time so we press Youngy on whether they intentionally set out to shock and redefine music in this country or if it was more a case of satisfying themselves."A little bit of both," he smiled. "I think initially there was a lot of tension and anger. We used the band as an outlet to express all that stuff that we were... me in particular, I was having a lot of life changes at that time. I was getting clean off drugs and booze around that time when we were starting the band and writing that record so there was a lot of stuff coming out of me. It was like projectile craziness. It was such a good outlet and to be able to play it live as much as we did at that time around Australia and hone those songs in the live setting - probably before we even recorded them. It's like when you do that first album, as a band you get the opportunity to write the songs, play the songs live and you probably haven't quite recorded it yet so you can kind of get away with it. Then when you go to do the subsequent albums it changes, you know? You get to do that and hone those songs for the first album and you get to play them live a lot, road test them and that sort of stuff and people don't know who you are, and then when you get past that you go 'we've gotta write these new songs, and we've gotta do it all in the studio and we might be able to play one or two live here or there', but you don't get to road test them as much as what you would with the first record. Just under two years ago the Australian music scene was saddened to hear that Sunshine Coast metal/rap/noise hybrid New Clear Vision were calling it a day.For five years the band was a breath of fresh air on a Brisbane music scene that too often got caught in its own self-importance rather than enjoying music for the pure body of work it is meant to be.Their stage outfits are still the stuff of legends and the sonic and physical mess they left in their wake after each performance was as soothing as it was savage. Such was the impending sense of loss of New Clear Vision were about to leave in the national music scene aa multitude of Aussie icons ranging from King Parrot's Matt Young to Joel from Kaosis all the way over in New Zealand reached out with heartfelt tributes and words of encouragement to frontman and one of the most loved people in the business, Brad Bromfield.With an uncertain musical future Brad retreated from the limelight, his thoughts never far from securing another group of like minded musicians to rekindle the band.HEAVY is pleased to say that a couple of months ago Brad called us to deliver the good news that a rebirth of New Clear Vision was in the foreseeable future, with the first gig back being at HEAVY's 10th Birthday Bash at the Mansfield Tavern on August 20.Check out our interview below which brings you up to date on what's happening with the band and introduces us to the new members.

It's fair to say that Australian extreme metal outfit King Parrot are one of a kind.Their brand of metal is brutal to every extreme, a sonic cavalcade of relentless pressure that is the musical equivalent of a marauding army.Going into a King Parrot moshpit is like going into battle, with many an unsuspecting metalhead falling victim to the sheer ferocity generated by a swarming throng of like minded individuals lost in the moment.While music to the extreme is nothing new in itself, it is the manner in which King Parrot approach their craft that elevates them into another realm. I think more so we're just enjoying getting back out on the road and playing shows again and playing live and remembering how to play the songs (laughs). Most of our songs are short so we usually jam in about 15 to 20 songs in an hour set. It's just been great, man, to get back out with the boys out on the road, talk shit, hang out, do stupid shit. Our shows are always so spontaneous and fun and high energy and it's been great to experience that again. I guess from my perspective doing the managerial role and being behind the business aspect of the band, I've been kind of nervous. We haven't played for such a long time other than a few sporadic shows here and there so it was like, are these people in the regional areas gonna come back out? I've been pleasantly surprised that they haven't forgotten us and have missed us, and we've missed them. Originating in Tasmania in the latter decade of last century, sludge/fuzz/stoner metal outfit Fridge were a band many considered to be well ahead of their time musically.Their brand of music – although striking a chord when it first came out – has gone on to almost become a mainstream form of music since, with Fridge and their music quietly becoming the stuff of Australian music folklore rather than the surprise hit they would have been had they come out in the last ten years.After a succession of quality releases, including their debut album Cactus, Fridge hit the touring circuit playing with a number of high profile Australian bands, with one of those outfits, Tumbleweed, inviting the retired group out of self imposed defrost mode and back onto the stage to help celebrate their 30th birthday.It is an announcement that caught the music loving public unawares, but also one which has been warmly welcomed, especially considering it has been 25 years since Fridge played their last show.Bass player Squiz (King Parrot) and Al Lynch joined HEAVY to chat about the upcoming tour in a candid and humorous interview that pretty much conducted itself.With Squiz better known these days as one of King Parrot's two guitarists, we broach the subject of him reverting back to bass with Fridge."Abso-motherfucken-lutely,” he exclaimed when I point out I thought I heard him mention bass. “I was swinging the old four strings way before I even looked at a guitar! In fact, King Parrot is the first band I have ever played in where I slung the six string, as probably evident by my recorded output and live shows that are chock full of horrible, anti guitar noise (laughs).""He's highly evolved,” Lynchy laughed."I'm enjoying getting back on the fourbies, I tell ya,” Squiz picked back up. “I've done myself a mischief already. My pinky hasn't recovered yet from yesterday's thrashout.”While the news of Fridge hitting the road again may have come as a surprise to us common folk, Lynch admits that talks may have been in place a little longer than the general public knows."There was whisperings when talk turned to the anniversary thing,” he admitted, “but I was like, no way, this isn't gonna happen (laughs) but things have changed now and it's all happening.""As with all things lately there's been hiccups galore with COVID but yeah, we're on,” Squiz added. “We weren't sure what rules and conditions would apply to particular places - it's a logistical nightmare doing anything these days.""Plus we're in four different states aren't we Squiz?" With his band joining many others in inactivity during the recent world events, King Parrot's guitarist Andrew ‘Squiz' Squires found himself in the unfamiliar position of having nothing to do or look forward to of major significance.Rather than spend his time holed up pondering what might have been, Squiz instead turned his attention to one of his passions away from King Parrot, that of sound engineering and recording.The result is the recently opened KrapShack, a home-based recording area that was utilized by Melbourne metal machine Choof for their recent demo EP.With the debut recording successfully out of the way, Squiz has decided to offer his knowledge and service to other bands so joined HEAVY for a chat about the KrapShack and the story behind its development."There's much more than just the guitar swinging wild man shenanigans from the Squizzer,” he laughed. “The KrapShack is a garage underneath my dwelling, a fairly sizeable one, and during the course of the pandemic I thought I better use my time a bit more constructively, so I started piecing together the bare bones of a recording situation. And that's what it is. It's a little space - a recording space - particularly for hashing out demoes and low budget, low fi, no frills, fun, get the job done, in and out and off you go sort of thing."What started out as a side project quickly turned into an opportunity for Squiz to use his creativity and passion to help others in the music industry."No-one really knew that I was tinkering away and setting this up,” he said, “but I've always had a fascination with tinkering with gear and obviously recording being in King Parrot and a myriad of other bands. I've always had a little four track here or there or a microphone or two and I've been slowly gathering bits and pieces - particularly over the course of the pandemic - when I discovered that no-one gives a flying fuck these days about the old analogue gear and they're just ditching it for dirt cheap prices. I'm not a big fan of this modern era style, note perfect, cutting edge, cut and paste stuff. It's tedious listening. It bores the tits off me, there's no soul or life left in the stuff. I'm gathering up all these analogue bits and pieces and thought I have always had an interest in it, so I'll go to school and start learning about it. I headed up to Box Hill TAFE and started doing an audio course - with a view initially of looking at getting into the live sound mixing - but I just found I was too old and slow for that (laughs). I'm not the most technically adept or super technically minded coot but given my own time and pace I can get around and get the job done. There's this big emphasis if you're a sound engineer to get it done super quick and bang, bang, bang. Fresh from belting out a six track demo with King Parrot's Squiz at his Krap Shack Studios, Melbourne “bong blasting, Sabbath worshipping grind from Hell” outfit Choof are gearing up for an eight date run up the East Coast to let EVERYONE know they mean business.Bass player Jackson sat down with HEAVY for a chat about the tour and Choof's music, starting with the collectio0n of six songs that is set to announce Choof to the world."We've been smashing them out for the last two years in our drummers factory,” he enthused. “Smashing them like you would not believe! We just wanted to get it done. When Squiz said he was setting up something out in his garage - the Krap Shack - we said yeah man, we'll be your guinea pig (laughs) so let's jump in."In the full interview Jackson runs us through the songs on the demo, the single Lines In The Sand and why the band chose that as their lead track, working with Squiz and King Parrot in general, their self imposed band description and how they manage to mention Black Sabbath and grind in the same sentence, the upcoming tour, more new music and plenty more.

Liam Weedall has been playing live and recording with bands since the age of 14 after picking up the sticks at age 11. He has played many different genres such as pop, rock, jazz, funk, punk, Latin, and big band, which have all had a profound influence on the way that he plays his main genre of choice: progressive metal/fusion. Liam's first band was 'The Peaves' (girl band), with his sister Gemma (on vocals) in 2005. During his mid-late teens, the most notable bands he was involved with were Sonic Euphoria and Asphyxia, the latter of which supported Whitechapel and Psycroptic as well as winning the award for “Best Youth Band” in the Australian Metal Awards in 2009. Liam was part of the Rostrevor College Big Band that took out 2nd place in the National School Band Competition ‘Generations in Jazz' in 2008. He was also selected by acclaimed brass player James Morrison as a Future Finalist for the James Morrison Scholarship in the same year. The following year he completed a Diploma in Jazz from the University of Adelaide. Liam joined Adelaide metal heavyweights ‘Double Dragon' in mid-late 2010 at the age of 19. Seeing as the band had played national tours with the likes of Slayer, Megadeth, Chimaira, and The Haunted, it was an easy decision to make. While with Double Dragon he played shows all around Australia including shows with Soilwork, Darkest Hour, Carnifex, and Tim Ripper Owens. The band released their sophomore album ‘Sons of Asena' on the 4th of December 2011 which received airplay on Triple J and was followed by extensive touring around Australia. Following the dissolution of Double Dragon in May 2012, Liam formed the band ‘Voros' with two of his band mates from Double Dragon. Since then, Voros has released 2 Eps and a full-length album. The band has toured around Australia several times and played with such notable bands as At the Gates, Napalm Death, Arcturus, Kataklysm, Entombed AD, Psycroptic, Be'lakor and King Parrot. 2016 saw the band tour Taiwan and China including Wake Up Festival in Taipei. In January 2015 Liam joined Adelaide progressive metal band Dyssidia, who have since played shows with international heavyweights Opeth, Trivium, Tesseract, Between the Buried and Me, Katatonia, Fallujah, The Ocean, as well as regular shows with Aussie veterans such as Caligula's Horse & Voyager. Dyssidia have now released 3 EPs and a full-length album "Costly Signals" and have toured Australia several times. Liam is currently playing live with Dyssidia, Voros, Alarum, Hadal Maw, James Norbert Ivanyi, and new funk rock trio Cliff Racer, as well as occasional gigs with various bands spanning multiple genres. Past jazz/cover band work has included playing with the Baker Boys Band, Party Club Band, Triplescore, Mr Goodnight, Bill Parton Trio, Chesterfield Brass, and Twisted J. He has been teaching drum lessons in Adelaide since 2008. We look at a new IPO for a restaurant chain, as well as heading down to the Atacama Desert in Chile to take a look at their solar farm and to whom they are exporting all this energy. We look at the King Parrot and realize that backyard birdbaths and bird feeders may be the cause of their problems. There is a love triangle on the campus of UC Barkley, and how a European Food Forum has been accused of being too Pro-Italian (I did not see a problem with this!). Todd Hansen is best known as the hard hitting, loveable drummer from King Parrot and F.U.C, but, like many people in the music industry, is also a champion bloke who has given as much to music and related industries as it has to him.Next week, on November 7, Todd will be trading in his drum sticks for running shoes as he lines up at the base of the massive Gateway Bridge in Brisbane to take part in the 25th Anniversary run of the Bridge To Brisbane.Already I can hear many of you asking why? - as did I - but the Bridge To Brisbane is held every year for charity, with each competitor able to choose their own charity for which to raise funds.Befitting his passion and first love, Todd has chosen Support Act - a group which provides care and support across the music industry.We caught up with Todd for a chat before he laces on the runners to find out just what motivates the great man to punish his body in a race that covers ten kilometers."The first time I did it was 2012 or 2013," he explained, "and I did it because it was a charity event and I wanted to - I'd lost my Mum a few years earlier to ovarian cancer - and I wanted to raise money for a charity that I was supporting at the time and I figured rather than always trying to put on a gig or hassle bands to raise money, I'll just do stuff myself. At the time I was still a smoker, and I was quite overweight, but I went and ran 10 k's in just over an hour, I hadn't run in years, and raised quite a bit of money for my particular charity. From then, I got more onto a health kick and changed my outlook a little bit and started eating healthier and exercising more, and I've done the Bridge To Brisbane quite a few times now. It was cancelled last year obviously, so this year I thought I would enter again. For the last eleven years since Mum passed away everything I've done has been towards mainly ovarian cancer fundraising but also any kind of cancer. I thought I've raised so much for that now, and the last eighteen months our music industry has been decimated and a lot of friends of mine and a lot of people I know and worked with haven't got an income and are really doing it tough. Being a concert booker and promotor is wrought with danger in the modern age, with many electing to hold off until things are a little more certain. Not so with the team at Hysteria who have already announced Halloween Hysteria, set to rock Brisbane's Mansfield Tavern on October 23. With a stellar line up including headliners Mammal, King Parrot and Spiderbait, plus a host of this countries finest talent, Halloween Hysteria will be the first major, large scale festival to go ahead in Australia since the events of the last 18 months have taken their stranglehold on the music industry at large. Ezekiel Ox, frontman for headlining act Mammal, took some time out recently to chat with HEAVY about Halloween Hysteria and happenings in the Mammal camp. We start by talking about the diversity of the line-up, which covers everything from rock to punk to metal and everything in between. "I'm not a promoter, so I can only comment from the perspective of a performer," he replied, "but it is a fantastic thing to be a part of the line-up. It's an amazing thing. We've done shows with Spiderbait before, and they always pull but when you can get those up and coming bands, and bands that are more established down the list, From Crisis To Collapse, Fangz, there's some really good bands there. It just gives people a reason to come out, doesn't it?" Already this year Mammal have been forced to alter planned shows on the run due to circumstances beyond their control, and although the current climate in this country sees music almost at a standstill, Ox is confident that Mammal will be able to take their place among the line-up come October. While punters have been disappointed all-too-often with postponements of shows, seldom do we stop to think how the bands and artists feel. "It's… I'm pretty adaptable," Ox measured. "I think one of the advantages humans have is that we're adaptable as a species. If you look at our history we are the species that adapts the best - emotionally, mentally, physically - we have this diverse range of ways to express ourselves. I try not to take it personally, I try not to take it individually, you can't take it personally. I see it more that I'm very disappointed for the punters. That's really what it's all about and anyone that's seen Mammal perform will now we give it all up for the punters, and it's all about them. I really feel for the concert goers. Obviously the music industry has been gutted, but it's the same for security guards, bar staff, restaurant owners, it's all housed under that hospitality blanket and music's a part of that. You go to a venue and have a meal and watch a band, it's all part of it, so I think we were the first to go and apparently now we're gonna be the last to come back. We just have to roll with it and hope that… we're a year and a half into a pandemic and history will tell us we will get through it, and you've just gotta go with it. Were all in the same boat, and it's hurt everything. It's not ideal. I don't know what to say, besides we're doing our best to keep the rock and roll going by going into the studio in Melbourne when we can and making music and to have the show up and running at the same level it always has been. It's definitely challenging, but I try to look at things very much as glass three quarters full. The band's all healthy, our families are healthy and that's a good thing. We're just trying to stay focussed on new music and keeping the show at a level and being ready when the time comes, which hopefully will be October." Brisbane hard rock unit PistonFist have certainly been busy in the first half of 2021.Fresh from a leading slot at Kilfest in Melbourne to shows in Far North Queensland and future tours of Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide, this four piece has certainly taken the proverbial bull by the horns and utilised their time fully.From playing with King Parrot, to Frankenbok, to Thy Art Is Murder and The Poor, PistonFist have shown not only their versatility across the hard rock/metal spectrum, but also won over legions of new fans with each outing.This week, the band released their crushing new single Rise Up, with frontman Geoff O'Leary joining HEAVY to talk about the song."Musically, we all had a little bit of input," he began. "I wrote most of the song, wrote all the lyrics, and the boys put their bits in. We had our good mate Dan Trickett from Like Thieves and Lynchmada and a bunch of other bands, he played the drums on this track for us. We were in between drummers at the time, and he did an amazing job. The guy is a freak drummer, and he absolutely killed it. We have since got a new drummer, Damo, and had really, really good input from him, but we're super stoked with the track. Its about not listening to the bullshit; not listening to people's opinions - sometimes you've gotta listen to opinions - but the idea is to rise above it, use it as fuel, whatever you wanna do with it but don't take it to heart. That's kind of the point. It's hard to believe that around 10 years ago a native Australian bird that quietly went about its business identifying as a King Parrot was about to have its identity and status unceremoniously ripped from its majestic wings and would forevermore play second fiddle to its new namesake.Yes, people, Melbourne grindcore (for want of having to label the mayhem) outfit King Parrot this year celebrate a decade of destroying stages around not only their home country but also that of the world at large.It is a journey that has seen the band rub shoulders with and work alongside some of the biggest names in the business, but throughout the quartet have remained true to their roots and their ability to mix lashings of humor and finesse to an otherwise destructive form of music.HEAVY caught up with frontman and Carnivore of Chaos Matt Young (Youngy) to reminisce on the story so far…"It's pretty cool man,” Youngy smiled, the enormity of the occasion seemingly dawning upon him as we spoke. “Reflecting back on the last 10 years it's been a crazy sort of ride for a band doing what we do. We've been very lucky and grateful to have the opportunities we've had, and we have destroyed a lot of stages around the world (laughs). Hopefully, we can get out there a little bit over the next six months and continue doing that. The tour that we've planned is more of a gradual tour spaced out over the next six months because we figured that we wouldn't be doing much else in terms of touring overseas or anything like that so we just gave ourselves a chance - like everyone else we've had the last year off - so this gives us the opportunity to get back into things and hopefully get around the country and play some shows and see all our friends and people we haven't seen in quite some time now."King Parrot have left their mark, influence, and respect on audiences around the world, a surprising feat given the in-your-face and aggressive style of music that spews forth from the stage every time they perform. Their appeal – especially for a more extreme metal band – is universal and overwhelming, a point not lost on Youngy and the rest of the band.“Initially the idea with King Parrot was to... I guess recreate... or more pay homage to all the Aussie bands we grew up listening to and loved,” he measured, “or in Squiz's case were part of (laughs). That was the idea, to try and create a band that was really an underground sounding band, not necessarily any specific genre so to speak, but to incorporate the elements of grindcore and thrash and punk rock and hardcore stuff and put it all into a unique sounding band that was influenced by stuff like Blood Duster, Damaged, Sadistik Exekution, Alchemist, you name it, and of those bands that were there and at the forefront of the scene when we were growing up. We wanted to create our own version of that so I guess as the band developed we grew and we lost a member here and lost a member there we wanted to bring in people that were not only committed to touring but were also able to bring something to the table and the band. Having people like Squiz and Slatts - who's basically been there from the start anyway - and now Toddy as well who has been in the band a long time as well, but having those sorts of characters and people who could bring their own element and flavor without having to do anything... the beauty of King Parrot is that we're just ourselves. We don't have to put anything else on, don't have to wear a mask, or do anything other than be ourselves. I think that's probably what has held us in good stead over the years. We just do King Parrot and that's all we know how to do. You either like it or you don't. Adelaide shock rock/metal outfit KcaveMen is a musical project with a difference.Not only does the band take little except their music seriously, they also have developed an engrossing back story to their formation that is the perfect seguey to their music and appearance.With a menacing look and aura combining to create some seriously kick ass tunes, KcaveMen have finally released their second album Evolution, more than ten years after announcing their arrival on the metal landscape.Band member KC joined HEAVY for a chat about the myriad of wonders that is the band and their music."I can definitely just make it a generic metal band speel and talk about whow e are and what we do and something theatrical but to really go past the thearical is what I like to do. I used to be a wrestler so I was all about developing characters and I was out scouting for new characters for a wrestling company and i found these masks and got this image in my head. hey were funny looking caveman masks with wigs on and I could see them with guitars and drums and everything and I knew it had to happen. That was back in 2005 and the band didnt really take offu until 2010 when I met Todd Hansen, who is the drummer from King Parrot and bezerker and he actually wanted to drum for a different project I was doing and I pitched him Kcavemen and thats when stuff started to get real. Kcavemen is somewhat of a joke but at the same time we are still being serious. It is a side project for both of us so me and Todd are the two main guys behind the band but at the same time we're still trying to take it pretty serious while doing it."

Newcastle modern melodic/thrash metal outfit PurEnvY are one of just four bands announced for next years Thrashville Festival on February 13.Alongside local sensations Astrodeath, Battlesnake and Scabz, PurEnvy are aiming to put their names alongside acts such as King Parrot, Frankenbok and Frenzal Rhomb to have headlined the prestigious Southern festival."I'm stoked,” enthused guitarist/vocalist Josip Malkoc about being part of the initial announcement. “Excited. It's gonna be a good show for everyone and it's pretty close to home! I've never actually been but I've wanted to go since the year King Parrot played. They do a couple of different festivals out there so it should be good.”Despite the current blow-up of Covid cases in N.S.W that has once again forced border closures, Malkoc remains optimistic about the festival going ahead.“Yeah absolutely,” he said, only half convincingly. “They're saying on the news 'has Sydney dodged the covid bullet for Christmas?' but you can't really say that. Every day is different. Sunshine Coast band New Clear Vision have sadly officially announced their separation, with a farewell show planned on the Gold Coast this weekend.Since 2015 the band have played with and alongside some of the best local, national and international band's in the business, winning over a loyal legion of fans and forging many friendships along the way.Frontman Brad Bromfield is no stranger to the music scene, having previously been with Messiam for a number of years, but this larger than life character has also been through good times and bad for the love of his art and sat down with HEAVY earlier this week for a chat about the break-up and plans for the future.In a sometimes emotional coversation, Brad opened up about his feelings of the end of another musical relationship – which is what being in a band is – and answered quite a few tough questions that were difficult for me to ask but even more difficult for him to answer.This is an interview everyone should listen to – musician or not – to give you a true gauge of the human side of these people that many of us only know from their stage persona. Things can, and often are, extremely difficult and take their toll physically and emotionally with often the person dealing with these demons having to do so alone.Big thanks to Brad for his honesty and conviction.I started by asking how he was feeling about the reality of this weekend possibly being the last time New Clear Vision perform together on stage."Yeah... We had shows and were gonna run things out which would have been pretty awesome but then Covid hit and shit hit the fan so all of them shows went and CJ moved to the Gold Coast so yeah, that really. There's no underlying anything, just separation. Shit happens and made it really hard. We had to travel to Caboolture and he had to travel also which was hard. I can only wish him well. We're still close which is good."New Clear Vision were a band that had to be seen live to fully appreciate, and one which, although gaining some form of success on the local front still fell far short of reaching their potential."No, fuck no, no way,” Brad agreed. “We were together for six years but we've only been out doing live shit from 2016 to pretty much the end of last year. We were only hitting our straps which fucken sucks. That's the hardest thing. I've already done that shit with Messiam before but we got further than we did with them.”Believe it or not, musicians feel the same as everyone else, sometimes harder. Losing a band is like losing a family and quite often respective members become down to the point of depression despite putting on a brave face.Brad is no exception, with the pain of the band coming to an end evident in his voice."Yeah I deal with those things like depression and anxiety as many musicians do,” he confessed. “People in the arts always do a lot because I don't know if we're taken seriously half the time. You do, you put your entire life into it - you know that because you talk to a lot of people that do bro. It fucken crushed me mate and I know it's disappointed the boys too... King Parrot today unleash their first new music since 2017, with "Banished, Flawed Then Docile" being lifted from the upcoming four-track E.P Holed Up In The Lair.It is a typical dose of frenetic madness from King Parrot and one is sure to creep into the live setlist when touring life kicks back into gear."All of the tracks on the E.P were written a few years ago," revealed frontman Matt Young. "We had a bit of time off between a US tour and a Europe tour. We had a couple of weeks to kill and we finished the tour and went and stayed in Florida and had a little holiday for a week and then we went down to Louisiana and visited Phillip and Kate who run Housecore and asked them if we could go in do some recording and make the most of our time while we were there and do stuff in the studio. We hung out with them and set out different ideas to try and write and record four tracks in the time that we had, just as a project to write and record them as good as we could and play it mostly live to give it that live kind of feel. I think that's what the tracks have. "Banished, Flawed Then Docile was probably the most gruesome thing I could think of at the time (laughs). The whole thing was a good exercise in trying to write and record as quickly as possible and do it as well as we possibly could."In the full interview, Matt talks about the diversity of each track musically, small musical nuances that often get lost in translation, experimenting with music, the limited-edition merchandise for the E.P, the joys of fatherhood and the possibility of a future King Parrot love song, the next music video that could surprise long time fans of the band and more.

On the eve of their tour with Thrash, Blast & Grind tour with Phil Anselmo and the Illegals, King Parrot bass player and all-round​ nice guy Slatts Everyday took some time out from his 23 hour per day practice schedule to give us all the necessary information (and some you probably wish you didn't)...Kicking off tonight in Canberra all but three shows have sold out, with Slatts admitting Phil should be grateful to the King Parrot boys for generating such a fanatical fan response."He was actually saying to me just earlier I don't know where I'd be without King Parrot," Slatts affirmed, "and I said you're definitely fucken right there mate! Everyone knows the real headliner is on second last".To those three venues that have yet to sell out - and yes I'm going to name and shame - Canberra, Perth and Newcastle, Slatts could only shake his head and mumble."There's not much I can say but I will tell you what, if you come along and see you won't forget it. Geez, we're ugly".In an interview with HEAVY late last year Phil confirmed that he would be revisiting some of his Pantera classics but stopped short of revealing just which ones. After a year which promised so much New Clear Vision almost imploded not long after releasing their debut album due to the age-old problem of member changes, but after a period of reflection and renewed enthusiasm vocalist Brad Bromfield says the band is ready to pick up the pieces and make up for lost time."Both guitarists left, which was a shame, but there was fuck all we could do about it", he reflected. "The same thing happened with another of my bands a long time ago and it's a bit of a heartbreak mate so I didn't know if I was going to keep going and just sat in my own shit (laughs). I know C.J (drummer) was heartbroken too so we didn't do much for a while".Going from the high of releasing new music to being on the cusp of extinction was almost too much to bear for Bromfield, with him openly admitting it was hard to put on a brave face and keep going."It's crushing mate", he sighed. "As you know we had the King Parrot and Superheist shows at the start of the year and our last gig was with Darkcell at Psycho Circus so all in all we had a pretty good year. The album was cool and we had lots of plans but things didn't go that way. "Oh man, everything happens for a reason", laughed Phil Anselmo when pressed on why he has not brought himself or any of his projects to Australia in more than five years. "I'm surrounded by a great group. Oh God, I love 'em, I love 'em, I love 'em and just making music with them has been a journey. I've been in so many different bands but this one is probably the most comfortable I have been in for a while man. We've grown together and everybody's always busy with writing and bouncing ideas off each other... it's awesome; a great environment. We don't mean to let Australia hang, man. We're happy to be coming over with King Parrot, it's gonna be a blast"!While it has been half a decade since Anselmo has graced our shores, the Thrash, Blast & Grind tour starting in March will mark the first time his current band The Illegals has been here period and as such Australian fans are unsure what to expect."The Illegals stuff itself is crazy and bizarre and extreme", Anselmo measured, "and I guess for a specific audience. But this past year has been pretty rough as far as the Pantera camp goes and with Vinnie's passing recently I figured why not put in some of the old songs that people wanna hear and have been asking to hear for a long time so that's been a different spin on the set. "It's amazing how many times we've been over there now", expressed King Parrot bass player and all-round larrikin Slatts, talking about their recently completed tour of the U.S supporting Phil Anselmo and the Illegals. "It's ten tours we've done now and it's always nice to see the recognition more and more the more we go. We got to share a bus with Phil and the band and they're our mates so it was good fun".So surely there must be some tales of sin and debauchery to be told."The sad part about it is we're just old fucks", Slatts laughed, "it's not like we're twenty-one anymore. I'm always happy being in my pajamas after the show and getting to bed. Rob has taken full advantage of the demand by working with a wide range of artists from different genres, crafting his skills and expertise. He is continuously building his profile in Australia and now beyond as a versatile, highly experienced weapon on the skins. Most people will know Rob as the drummer in Hadal Maw and I Built the Sky, however also has a long history with bands such as Alarum, Teramaze, King Parrot, Dreadnaught, Descrator and many more.
