Veel poppunk bands haten natuurlijk het dorp waar ze vandaan komen, maar één bepaalde stad komt wel heel veel voor in de songtitles van bands, namelijk Los Angeles. Daarom deze aflevering o.a. Sugarcult, Bad Religion en Less Than Jake met een nummer over Los Angeles. Daarnaast zijn er weer flink wat albums uit gekomen, maar ook losse singles. Daarom nieuwe muziek van Holding Absence, Taking Back Sunday en The Word Alive. Ook duiken Bart & Lesley deze aflevering weer terug in de tijdmachine en gaan we terug naar 2017, deze aflevering met muziek van The Smith Street Band. Platonic Sex: Live at Sonic Masala Fest, The Triffid, Newstead, 13 August 2022 Queer alt-rockers Platonic Sex are next up on the Live Delay roster. In 2018, a new Melbourne band arrived featuring ex-members of The Smith Street Band, The Bennies and Apart From This. With the self-deprecating name of LOSER, they hit the ground running with their debut single immediately added to triple j. Signed to Domestic La La, the label of Violent Soho's James Tidswell, a debut album from LOSER at the start of 2020 signalled a busy year ahead. Those plans soon disappeared, and in lockdown for much of the year, singer Tim Maxwell started to experience severe anxiety. With medication and some family help, the band ended up channelling their frustrations into building their own studio and writing a second album. All The Rage is the result, a consistent rock record that feeds off the riffs of Queens Of The Stone Age, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins and other seminal ‘90s and early noughties acts. Tim speaks here with Richard Kingsmill about what he went through last year, how he and his brother Will returned to their original family home to build the studio, and how aliens inspired one of the album's best moments.

Two bands with die-hard followings go up against each other this week on the pod! This week is a special one! We finally get to discuss the titanic slab of aggression that is the incredible debut full length from hardcore supergroup END. This week's episode is a beefy one! With a handful of big, highly anticipated albums coming out within weeks of each other, we definitely have a lot to keep us entertained during this sheltering time. The elephant in the room is, of course, the new album from Dance Gavin Dance, 'Afterburner', in which we give our track-by-track breakdown on - for what has seemingly become a divisive album online. We also give our final thoughts on 'Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible' by Enter Shikari and 'Don't Waste Your Anger' by The Smith Street Band; both of which were released the week prior. Additionally, we get excited for the first two episodes in the sports documentary, The Last Dance, starring Michael Jordan and members of the 90s era Chicago Bulls; and Adam shares his thoughts on two classic albums from The Smashing Pumpkins. Thanks so much for sharing your time with us once again! We very much appreciate your continue support. #DanceGavinDance #Afterburner #EnterShikari #TheSmithStreetBand #SmashingPumpkins #TheLastDance #MichaelJordan #ChicagoBulls --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theskinnywithmikeandadam/support

Outside of the land of the long white cloud, The Beths were somewhat of a well-kept secret up until about this time last year. With the release of their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, the Auckland band became an international commodity and one of the quickest rising indie-rock bands of 2018. They now have support slots with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Bloc Party under their belts, not to mention a string of sold-out gigs both at home and across the pond. Before all of that, though, Liz Stokes and Jonathan Pierce were just awkward indie kids trying to figure out where they fit in. They tell stories from all across their still-blossoming career here, before taking to the stage at the Lansdowne in Sydney. The Beths are touring nationally in March and April, playing theatre shows with The Smith Street Band and headliner club shows with Jess Locke. Press Club played their first show at the start of 2017. 18 months later, they'd opened for everyone from The Smith Street Band to Kingswood and sold out their first-ever headlining tour. Sure enough, this kind of thing just didn't happen overnight. The members of Press Club have been at it for years now - in fact, bassist Ian MacRae and drummer Frank Lees have been playing in bands together since they were in high school. Before a packed-out show at Sydney's Chippo Hotel, the rhythm section convened in a nearby park to talk about their unexpected background and the current wave of momentum they're riding. For years, Georgia's A.W. would write, record and play music in their bedroom; completely unaware of the impact their songs and albums were having on the world outside. The magic of the internet meant their unique, earnest and catchy music was heard across the world; and it's brought her a surefire cult fanbase along the way. In May, A.W. and their backing band toured Australia for the very first time in support of lifetime friends of the show The Smith Street Band. We were able to steal A.W. away for a hot minute before they took to the stage of the Enmore Theatre. With the precious time we had, we talked shop on MySpace days, getting in on the early days of crowdfunding and how A.W. was into Plain White T's BEFORE it was cool. (It was never cool.) One of the biggest questions this pre-season involves which ruckmen should make their way into your AFL Fantasy Classic team. Over the last few years the top two ruckmen from the previous season haven't backed it up. Will Max Gawn be the man again? Does Brodie Grundy start 2017 how he finished last year? Or do we see Stefan Martin and Todd Goldstein bounce back? Roy, Calvin and Warnie discuss different structures for your ruck line up and how best to spend your cash. Register for AFL Fantasy: http://fantasy.afl.com.au Also in this week's podcast: • Who is burning up the track and training the house down. • A look at Roy's team and his tips in selecting your squad. • Wil Wagner from The Smith Street Band discusses his Fantasy Classic team. • Fantasy question time from social media.

No Sister: Kicking off their career in Brisbane in 2014, No Sister are now calling Melbourne their home for their alt-rock noise making antics. Over the past two years, they have released four singles with a sound that has been compared to legendary noise rock artists Sonic Youth and The Velvet Underground. They released their self titled debut album on the 30th of August 2016, which was self-recorded and mixed by the band. Recorded live at the Greenslopes Bowls Club as part of Sonic Masala Fest on the 13th of August 2016. Recorded & mixed by Branko Cosic. Greyface: Kicking it since 2014, Greyface make catchy alternative rock that you can nod your head to. Sounding somewhere in between The Smith Street Band and The Gaslight Anthem, their songs are hard hitting punk tracks with well crafted lyrics shouted out with a raspy voice. Their debut album ‘Grey Hairs’ was released in November 2015 and has seen them win support slots for Australian punks BATPISS, Super Best Friends and The Bennies. Recorded live at Crowbar on the 10th of June 2016. Recorded & Mmixed by Reuben Aptroot. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 4th September 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
You can't keep Brad Fulton too far from a stage. The Melbourne native cut his teeth at the helm of a triple-pronged guitar attack in The Gun Runners before becoming a member of feminist hardcore renegades Outright. He's also subbed in as lead guitarist for Ceres, worshipped one of the dark lords of rock & roll with The Glenn Danzing Tapdanzig Extravadanzig and has most recently spent time as a stage-hand and guitar tech for the likes of The Smith Street Band, Luca Brasi and Violent Soho. In-between duties at the Enmore Theatre for the sold-out Violent Death Gooch Rats tour, Fullo pulled up a chair and shared tales from the road, from the guitar rack and from the top of the stairwell at Caringbah Bizzo's (RIP). I will not tire of listening to this episode. On June 19th this year, my wife and I made our way to Federation Square to see some live music from acts we love - Felix Riebl and The Smith Street Band. Earlier, Tripod and Waleed Aly's Robot Child had performed. It was an event to launch Refugee Week and the MC was Osamah Sami. After hearing him speak for just a few minutes on stage, I knew I would invite him to the podcast. Not only for his wit and humour, but his unique story which has seen much suffering but also fantastic success. A refugee who moves to Australia as a teenager knowing no English couldn't possibly win literary & acting awards twenty years later?? What amazing things to do in your third language! If you put your heart & soul in to anything, the goal is possible. He knows the English language better than those who've used it their entire lives. Listening to this you'll hear remarkable poetry, a few whole-hearted f bombs, real laughter, stories of war, families divided and reunited, sporting triumph, singing... think about what living in your country means to you and wonder what it would be like if you happened to be born elsewhere. How would life be different? How would your perspectives shift? This chat has the full spectrum. The episode is the longest so far in this series and I hope you can get through the whole thing - even if you hit pause and come back! I didn't anticipate adding any national anthem to the Ever-growing Playlist of Joy, but I think it's pretty cool to have one there now, especially after hearing some of Osamah's story. To learn more, grab his book. Also keep an eye out for Ali's Wedding and Two Refugees and a Blondehttps://play.spotify.com/user/thesongnerd/playlist/1PjMUX8R9cwbvl62O0HFpT If you download the apps, you can subscribe through iTunes and also follow the podcast at Whooshkaa, where you'll be kept in touch with new episodes as they're published. If you love it, share it! Thanks for your support. I hope you can do something today that makes you happy.
This is a very special episode for us as it features songs from Jess Locke, High Tension, Smith Street Band, during the legendary ‘Gig of The Century’ fundraising show for the #keepcommunityradio movement that took place at Crowbar in Brisbane on the 5th of June, 2016. a very big thank you for everybody who got involved in this show. The bands who dedicated their time, the venue who dedicated their business, and the patrons who donated their money. As you may be aware, The Federal Budget contains cuts of $1.4 million p.a., funding that currently keeps community radio stations like this one, broadcasting on digital radio in 5 capital cities. The good guys at The Smith Street Band helped organise this fundraising event and implemented a ‘pay what you feel’ payment model at the door, with all proceeds going to community radio. They managed to raise $3,500 on the day, and more importantly highlighted an important issue in our industry. The Smith Street Band: In only 5 years of existence The Smith Street Band have made a tremendous impact on the Australian music scene by revitalising the long forgotten genre that is a staple of our cultural identity; Pub Rock. Their raw punk rock sound with intelligent lyricism delivered in vocalist Wil Wagner's instantly recognisable, prominent and sharp Australian tone have made The Smith Street Band our new Pub Rock icons. High Tension: Coming from Collingwood in Victoria, High Tension are a brutal four piece that have been hitting it hard since their beginning in 2012. Fronted by the outright terrifying Jakarta born Karina Utomo, High tension will leave you in a dizzying state of disaster which is amplified ten fold during their live performances. Sounding like they’ve taken an influence from every possible style of heavy music and fused it together to make High Tension stand out in their own. They’ve released two albums so far through the Cooking Vinyl label, 2013’s ‘Death Beat’ and 2015’s ‘Bully’, both of which have received critical acclaim including ARIA award nominations, flawless reviews from music publications, and even the tick of approval from master of hardcore himself, Henry Rollins. The powerful thud behind the drum kit, with pounding fuzzed out bass lines, sharp erratic guitar, and the unpredictable howls, screams and slurs on the vocals make High Tension a band worth checking out. Jess Locke Band: Starting off as a solo project in 2009 and consisting of only her voice and acoustic guitar, Jess Locke recorded her first album ‘In the Bedroom’ literally in her bedroom, true DIY style. Over the years since, she has released another four DIY acoustic albums as well as a live album from The Old Bar in Melbourne. But in 2014 Jess decided to switch up her playing styles and bring in a few other elements like drums, percussion, bass, ukulele and even some good ol electric guitar. The lo-fi sounds of her DIY recordings, simple and effective melodies and blissful delivery of her sad girl lyricism create a powerful sound of her own that makes for very comfortable listening. Her latest track ‘Paper Planes’ was released at the start of June and is the first taste of her next album due for recording later in the year. All sets were Recorded at Crowbar on the 5th of June, 2016 by Branko Cosic. All sets mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 3rd July 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

Friend and frequent collaborator Lucas put his hand up to be our first recommendation recipient. To hear songs from these albums, and all the other music we discuss, check out this episode's playlist on Spotify here. That includes the Smith Street Band song Britt references, which is actually called "Wipe That Shit-Eating Grin Off Your Punchable Face", a legacy that we here at HRFY consider perfect for former PM Tony Abbott. If you'd like some personalised recommendations, email us (hrfypod@gmail.com) or tweet us (@hrfypodcast) with three songs you're digging right now, and a bit on why each track speaks to you.
A dislocated shoulder and a few happy accidents lead a punk part-timer into the role of the lifetime - the driving force of The Smith Street Band, who have evolved into one of the country's most respected and beloved contemporary rock bands. Chris Cowburn might not be up-front - either literally or figuratively - but he's been a part of the band since its formation, and has also moved into various managerial roles as well as founding his own label, Jackknife Music. At the top of another national tour, Chris shared his tales of unexpected European shenanigans, finding a home in Poison City and taking the world on one sweaty club show at a time. The Smith Street Band have just released a new single, "I Scare Myself Sometimes," featuring the vocals of Lucy Wilson of The Sugarcanes. The 7-inch can be purchased via Poison City Records here: http://poisoncityestore.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-smith-street-band-i-scare-myself-sometimes-7 The band end their national tour with a show tonight in Byron Bay and two sets at the Yours & Owls Festival in Wollongong on the 3rd and the 4th.
