Savannah Guthrie returned to Today in a wave of emotion, sharing a tearful, lingering hug with Jenna Bush Hager that left the room hushed. Meanwhile, a new biography claims Carolyn Bessette had a sharp, private disdain for Gwyneth Paltrow during their Calvin Klein days. And high above it all, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey came face-to-face on the same flight — no smiles, no words, just palpable, ice-cold tension. Sometimes, silence says everything. Because lineworkers are heroes and first responders, they have been celebrated in songs, books and movies. For this episode of the T&D World Line Life Podcast, we are featuring an interview with William Wister Haines, Jr., the son of the author of Slim and the companion book, High Tension. During this episode, William shares the story of how his father's book, inspired by his work in the line trade, became not only a national bestseller, but also a Hollywood movie starring Henry Fonda. Years later, he continued his father's legacy by bringing both books back into print. He now personally inscribes and ships copies to training programs and lineworkers nationwide. On this week's episode, I'm very pleased to be rejoined by Rod Blackhurst (we had him on a couple of years back to discuss his indie crime drama Blood for Dust) and joined for the first time by Ethan Suplee, veteran character actor we all know and love from films like Mallrats, Remember the Titans, and The Wolf of Wall Street and TV shows like My Name Is Earl. We're discussing their new film, Dolly, a true indie endeavor made in the spirit of American classics like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Evil Dead or the New French Extremity's High Tension. Rod and his partners raised some money, brought some folks to the woods of Tennessee, and put together something he hopes will be memorable for the audiences who see it. It's hitting theaters this weekend, playing around 800 or so screens across the country, and if you're a horror head—or just someone looking for something different—I hope you'll check it out. (It is a horror movie, though, so I cannot provide any refunds if the onscreen terror sparks a walkout.)As I said, getting Ethan on the show is a real treat because I've been a fan for years and it's been interesting to watch him dip his toes into some darker waters in recent years in films like Dolly, Babylon, Blood for Dust, and God Is a Bullet. It was fun to pick his brain about consciously making that shift and why his film work often gives him a little more space to stretch than his TV work.

This week on the pod, we're taking a very stressful detour to a deserted island with Send Help. Sam Raimi is back behind the camera for the first time since Drag Me to Hell, and he did not come to play.Starring Rachel McAdams, this survival thriller delivers deserted-island chaos, nonstop tension, and plenty of nail-biting moments that had our anxiety levels sky-high. We break down what totally works, what didn't quite land for us, and why, despite the stress, we both agree this one is absolutely worth the price of a theater ticket. So grab your popcorn, take a deep breath, and press play… you're going to need it.
In My Skin (2002), Inside (2007), and Martyrs (2008) While the French aren't widely known for their horror films, when they do enter the genre, it's often something special. A perfect example is Georges Franju's Eyes Without a Face (1960). With its stark realism and dark themes, it established a tone of discomfort and unease that still feels powerful today. In the early 2000s, a new wave of younger filmmakers took that sense of unease and pushed it much further, deliberately testing the limits of what audiences could tolerate. These films were often graphic, sometimes over-the-top, and frequently dealt with disturbing subject matter that lingered even when the violence or gore wasn't shown onscreen. Often, it wasn't what you saw that was hardest to watch, but the subject itself and the way it was presented. In this episode, we take on three titles that demonstrate the range of this movement, from deeply subversive and uncomfortable subject matter to films that push gore to extreme levels, while still challenging the viewer intellectually and emotionally. These are films that don't just shock in the moment, they can leave you unsettled for days after they end. That's powerful filmmaking. Films mentioned in this episode: Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), Calvaire (2004), Dark Touch (2013), Diabolique (1955), Eyes Without A Face (1960), Frontier(s) (2007), Get Out (2017), High Tension (2003), The Horde (2009), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), In My Skin (2002), Inside (2007), Irreversible (2002), I Stand Alone (1998), Martyrs (2008), The Phantom of Liberty (1974), Raw (2016), Salo, or 120 Days of Sodom (1975), Scream (1996), The Shining (1980), The Tall Man (2012), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Them (2006), Trouble Every Day (2001)

What did the Boo Baby think of the twist? Is Kyle too trusting? Don't lose your head as the Boo Boys break it all down.

Every now and again, the horror genre produces a film that becomes a bona fide classic. In 1980, director William Lustig and co-writer and star Joe Spinell teamed up to make what may be the defining film of the 42nd Street grindhouse era: Maniac. The film has it all, a serial-killing protagonist who scalps women while sobbing about his mother, buckets of gore from an early-career Tom Savini, and all the usual suspects of late-'70s Times Square: hookers, drugs, and utter despair. A remake, directed by Franck Khalfoun, written by Alexandre Aja, and starring Elijah Wood, arrived in 2012. This time, the action shifts to Los Angeles and leans more heavily into the mannequins that served as surrogate girlfriends in the original. Does it rise to the occasion and meet its predecessor on its own terms? We dig into that question, and much more, on this Twice Told Tales edition of the show. Films mentioned in this episode: The Avengers (2012), Basket Case (1982), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Dawn of the Dead (2004), The Fly (1986), Friday the 13th (1980), The Godfather (1972), Halloween (1978), High Tension (2003), Inferno (1980), Jaws (1975), Last Horror Film (1982), Last House on the Left (1972), Maniac (1980), Maniac (2012), Pieces (1982), Taxi Driver (1976), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), The Warriors (1979)

In this episode, we break down Alexandre Aja's High Tension (2003), a ferocious entry in the New French Extremity movement that fuses raw brutality with psychological collapse. Join The Dale, Cea, and Twan as we dissect this blood-soaked slasher, a film that begins as a home-invasion shocker and ends as a hallucinatory study of obsession and repression. Tune in as we break down the film's legacy. We'll talk about its place in early-2000s horror, its controversial narrative pivot, and why High Tension still divides audiences two decades later.
What do you get when you combine a horror movie audience, a spiritualist séance, and a haunted house attraction? Beginning in the 1930s and lasting into the 1960s, midnight ghost shows were ghoulishly chaotic, wonderfully campy 4D theater performances that accompanied the scary movies of the era, beloved by a mostly-teenage audience who often became a part of the show themselves. Schlocky showman Chelsey Weber-Smith tells Sarah about how magicians-turned-ghostmasters used paranormal parlor tricks, gory skits, and marketing gimmicks to create a new form of vaudevillian dark comedy. As horror obsessives, Sarah and Chelsey muse about what it would have been like to attend one of these late night wacky fright fests that paved the way for the happily trashy theater camaraderie of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Digressions include the resilience of the horseshoe crab, dollar store competition, and plot holes in the movie High Tension (2003).More Chelsey Weber-Smith:Listen to American HysteriaOriginal music in this episode is produced + performed by Magpie Cinema Club(except for Harry Belafonte's Zombie Jamboree which is, in fact, from 1962.)Listen to their cover of Season of the VVitchProduced + edited by Miranda ZicklerMore You're Wrong About:Bonus Episodes on PatreonBuy cute merchYWA on InstagramSarah's other show, You Are GoodSupport the show

Synopsis Bring Her Back follows siblings Andy and Piper as they go into foster care after their father suddenly passes away. They are placed with a woman named Laura, who already has another foster child that seems a little bit off, somehow. As the kids try to stick together to mourn their father, Laura is trying to deal with her own grief in a shocking and disturbing way. Review This movie makes you feel really bad, like really really bad. I think some movies are exceptional at making you feel bad with no reprieve, i.e. Angst (1986), High Tension (2003), Funny Games (1997). But in order to properly achieve a good feel-bad movie, there needs to be some TLC put into the filmmaking and/or the viewer needs to care about the characters, whether they are good or bad people. In this film, I didn't see much love of the craft put into the style of editing or shooting, and although I hated seeing the kids get hurt in this movie, I didn't care that much for the characters. Maybe that's due to minimal backstory, or maybe the script was not connecting for me. That's not to say this isn't a good film, per-say, because it is a horror movie unlike I've seen in awhile, it makes you feel really bad and it is pretty original while also utilizing tried and true horror tropes. I wanted to cry at the end of this movie. There were a lot of times where I audibly said what the fuck. It's insane, vile, sad, and creepy but I just can't say it's amazing. It's more shocking than anything, it wants to shock, and shock it did. I kind of want to rate this higher but I was just so baffled by all of it, and by the time something happens I really didn't want to watch it anymore. I think this may be an evil film. Score 7/10

As horror fans, it's hard enough trying to keep up with all the movies—let alone the memorabilia and collectibles—but just imagine having to live with one of us! In this episode, we've invited our wives onto the show to share their perspectives—not just on living with a slightly obsessive fan, but on how they've come to embrace the genre themselves. You'll hear how they became fans in their own right, and what kinds of films still give them the shivers. As you'll learn, being a horror fan has evolved into a shared experience—a communal passion that binds us together. While we might not all love the same titles, we all agree on one thing: this genre rules. We welcome Kat AuBuchon, Jenn Glonek, and Dawn Kitley as they join us to help Discover the Horror! Films Mentioned in this episode: August Underground (2001), August Underground's Mordum (2003), Cannibal Ferox (1981), Carcinoma (2014), Deadly Games aka Dial Code Santa Clause (1989), Demoniacs (1974), The Descent (2005), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), Frankenstein (1931), Friday the 13th (1980), Funny Games (1997), The Godfather (1972), Gods of the Deep (2023), Godzilla (1954), Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween V: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987), High Tension (2003), Hostel (2005), Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009), Inside (2007), Longlegs (2024), Mandy (2018), Nekromantik (1988), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Psycho (1960), Oddity (2024), One Missed Call (2008), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), The Redsin Tower (2006), The Rule of Jenny Penn (2025), Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975), Scream (1996), A Serbian Film (2010), Session 9 (2001), Sleepaway Camp (1983), Society (1989), Sting of Death (1966), The Substance (2024), The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014), Terrifier (2016), Terror Firmer (1999), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), Three on a Meathook (1972), Tromeo and Juliet (1996), Two Evil Eyes (1990), Without Warning (1980), Z.A.A.T. Hardware (1990), Death Machine (1994), and Event Horizon (1997) The 1990s are often thought of as a decade of dread for horror fans—not because of what was on the screen, but because nothing good supposedly came out of it. Or at least, that's the typical response. But as we continue down the path to Discover the Horror, we're starting to realize that what we remember about the past isn't always accurate—whether it's based on our own memories or what we were told. When you really dig into those ten years, there's actually a lot of great stuff that came out—even just here in the U.S. And when you look beyond to international horror, it gets even better. Browse through the list and you're bound to say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.” In this episode, we decided to tackle that decade and picked three titles that, as it turns out, share some very similar themes. And we think all three are well worth watching. Films mentioned in this episode: Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Batman Returns (1992), The Blair Witch Project (1999), The Boneyard (1991), Braindead (1992), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Candyman (1992), Cronos (1992), Day of the Dead (1985), Death Machine (1994), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Descent (2005), Dr. Giggles (1992), Dust Devil (1992), Event Horizon (1997), Evil Dead 2 (1987), The Exorcist (1973), Faces of Death (1978), Freeway (1996), Goodfellas (1990), Godzilla (1998), Gravity (2013), Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 (1998), Hardware (1990), Hellraiser (1987), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), High Tension (2003), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), Judge Dredd (1995), Jurassic Park (1993), Lord of Illusion (1995), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Meet the Feebles (1989), Mimic (1997), Misery (1990), The Mummy (1999), Nightbreed (1990), Pulp Fiction (1994), The Princess Bride (1987), Reign of Fire (2002), The Resurrected (1991), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Return to Splatter Farm (2020), Ringu (1998), Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Star Wars (1977), Thelma & Louise (1991), The Thing (1982), Valentine (2001), Warning Sign (1985), Willow (1988)
