Today, I'm thrilled to announce my interview with four-time Tony winning director Jerry Zaks. Tune in to hear some of the stories of his wonderful career, including creating a three-part comedic bit in A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, helping Swoosie Kurtz find her character in THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES, his upcoming work on BOEING-BOEING, an audacious early audition, revising ANYTHING GOES for Lincoln Center, choosing the design for LEND ME A TENOR, how he collaborated with Christopher Durang, finding the heart of THE MUSIC MAN, what made him want to revive BIG FISH, the difficulty of working on THE CAPEMAN, how he avoids embarrassing actors, revising THE ADDAMS FAMILY for the national tour, the “Ma Nishtana” question in musical theater, commissioning a new book for SISTER ACT, bringing LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS to Broadway, creating STAIRWAY TO PARADISE for Encores!, collaborating with Neil Simon on LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR, making changes to FACE VALUE, finding out about the shutdown during MRS. DOUBTFIRE rehearsals, and so much more. Don't miss this candid conversation with one of Broadway's most brilliant directors. Back in 2016, the national tour of THE LION KING played a month-long engagement at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, North Carolina. Prior to that, I was able to interview actor Ben Lipitz for BroadwayWorld by phone. At the time, he was in the show as Pumbaa, a part he played for more than 6,000 performances through both the tour and Broadway productions. Ben recently passed away on April 18th at the age of 58. So what I decided to do is share with all of you the aforementioned interview. I've also included a snippet from a conversation I had with the tour's head carpenter at the time, Billy Kimbley, as the show was loading into DPAC a few days before the run began. Ben Lipitz's previous stage credits included RED, HOT, AND BLUE (Goodspeed Opera, Papermill Playhouse); JUST SO (Goodspeed Opera); ART; DIRTY BLONDE; LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR; A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM; Cleveland Playhouse, Kennedy Center, Walnut St. Theatre. TV: THE SOPRANOS, LAW & ORDER, 100 CENTRE ST., HOMICIDE. Film: THE GIRAFFE and FIND ME GUILTY (directed by Sidney Lumet). *I do not own any of the content used in this podcast. Coming to the Durham Performing Arts Center from May 21st-26th is the national tour of Broadway's classic musical comedy, HELLO, DOLLY! starring the legendary Tony Award winner Betty Buckley. I recently had the great pleasure of interviewing actor Lewis J. Stadlen, who stars opposite Betty as the wealthy half-a-millionaire Horace Vandergelder. Lewis J. Stadlen is the recipient of the Irish Times Award for his performance in Arthur Miller’s THE PRICE at Dublin’s Gate Theatre. His Broadway credits include THE FRONT PAGE, FISH IN THE DARK, THE NANCE, THE PRODUCERS, 45 SECONDS FROM BROADWAY, THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (Tony Award nomination), THE FEMALE ODD COUPLE, CANDIDE (Tony nomination), THE SUNSHINE BOYS, MINNIE’S BOYS (Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and Theatre World Award). He starred in the national tours of THE PRODUCERS, GUYS & DOLLS, THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR. His film credits include THE VERDICT, SERPICO, TO BE OR NOT TO BE, and IN & OUT. Television: Dr. Fried on THE SOPRANOS.
