In this episode of 'The Science of Self,' we welcome Mark Connor from St. Paul, Minnesota, a former competitive boxer turned boxing trainer and writer. Mark introduces his book, 'It's About Time: Millions of Copies Sold for Dad,' an autobiographical saga interwoven with poetry that explores his life, his relationship with his late father, and his spiritual journey. Mark discusses his re-embrace of his Catholic faith, the influence of his Irish heritage, and his deep connection with the Native American community through his work at a youth shelter. He also touches on the discipline and routine required in both writing and boxing, and the importance of taking the first step to achieve one's goals. Join us for a heartfelt conversation on faith, discipline, and the pursuit of personal excellence.00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction00:17 Mark Connor's Background and Book Overview01:43 Faith and Personal Journey01:58 Involvement with Native American Community06:47 Cultural and Spiritual Reflections15:28 Reading from the Book32:56 Writing and Discipline37:36 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsIt's About Time (Millions of Copies Sold for Dad) is a saga wrapped around a package of poems, guarded by Angels. With a narrative style that reads like a novel, contains a collection of poetry, and shares an autobiography, Mark Connor guides us through a journey of love, family, and life that is ours as much as his own, peaking at the point of merger of difference and unity. Following him from memory to memory, we feel the eyes upon us, defeat the empire of fear, embrace the kingdom of love, and find ten minutes a day to be grateful. All the while, we celebrate the city of Saint Paul (with a friendly nod to Minneapolis), experience Irish influence in neighborhood life, rooted in Catholic cohesion, embraced by indigenous America in the medicine wheel. We box the perfect metaphor with future world champions, love beauty in a moment of ambivalence, work on a fishing boat in Southeast Alaska, comfort a child in an American Indian shelter for kids, and guard American Indian buildings, with guns, in riots. Through it all, we honor Dad, mourning his death and remembering his love, sharing a story written for America, valuing fatherhood, defending family, encouraging marriage, and providing hope.Mark Connor is a Literary Pugilist from Saint Paul, Minnesota. A lifelong boxer and Boxing Trainer, he runs a service called, Fighting Chance/Boxing For Life. His writing about Boxing, as well as his training services, can be found at https: //BoxersAndWritersMagazine.com. He writes fiction, poetry, and journalism. This week on SUPERWOMEN, I'm joined by Cristina Mancini, CEO of Black Girls Code, the nonprofit on a mission to change the face of tech. Before joining Black Girls Code, Cristina built a career in film and television, where her curiosity about how to reach audiences between releases led her into the world of technology. What began as a quest to better engage fans soon evolved into a passion for using tech to drive impact and inclusion. Cristina is leading a powerful expansion of the organization's focus: beyond teaching girls to code, she's focused on launching them into the rooms where decisions are made. With her, Black Girls Code has grown to include not just education, but inspiration and real-world opportunity, ensuring that girls and women of color not only learn the skills, but build the confidence and community to thrive in tech. Mancini's vision is clear: access isn't enough, especially in a society in which “people are developing technologies that are not built with inclusion in mind.” Under her leadership, Black Girls Code has evolved beyond education, expanding into college campuses and adult programs that inspire, equip, and launch talent into real-world careers. Whether it's helping a girl build her first app or ensuring she lands a paid internship, Cristina is building a future where representation is the rule, not the exception. In a world where AI and emerging technologies are shaping everything from healthcare to hiring, Cristina is clear: inclusion isn't optional, it's crucial. From building out summer camps and national programming to creating pathways for paid internships and leadership, she's working to ensure no girl is left behind just because the tech world wasn't built with her in mind. Thank you for listening! Rosamaria is the author of the book SOS Podcasts. In the book she tells her unique story of being a woman, wife, and mother living abroad. In a refreshingly original, funny, assertive, and honest voice she lays it all out – from her tendency toward hyper protective parenting and Catholic guilt to her opinions on air conditioning, military wives, German food, and turning the big 4-0.Apart from being a writer Rosamaria Mancini is also a professor, and public relations and media manager based in Germany. She has worked for numerous news organizations including the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times where she wrote feature stories. She also spent a few years working in communications for the Vatican where she had the opportunity to accompany the Pope to the Holy Land. She recently earned her PhD in creative writing. Here is a “Sunny Song”, wherein the fleeting sunlight is a dappled reminder of the evanescence of existence. They're all gone now: Bill Evans (piano), Tony Bennett (vocals), Henry Mancini (Composer), and Johnny Mercer (Lyricist), but their beautiful creation lives on to remind us to gather our rosebuds while we may.Sadness, and gratitude run in equal measure throughout all of the song's manifestations. The title itself derives from an 1896 poem by Ernest Dowson, taken from the Roman poet, Horace, whose latin translates as:“The brief sum of life forbids us the hope of enduring long;” The film for which Mancini and Mercer furnished this deathless song, was so tragic in its portrayal of addiction, that, even as a 10 year old, I mourned for the hopelessness of Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick's doomed romance that should have produced nothing but happiness, but brought only sorrow. In the magician's hands of Bill Evans, the chordal melody seems to waft in the breeze, and Tony Bennett's voice, never more supple, interprets the wistfulness of unfulfilled longing with a seasoned perfection. The results: a collaborative triumph. Tony was quoted as saying that their recordings were “the most prestigious thing I ever did”. Quite a statement from the acknowledged master.

What's up, dudes? Merry Christmas 2!! “Santa Claus: The Movie” is a fantastic origin story, made better by Henry Mancini's score and a killer song of Sheena Easton. Thus, Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells joins me to really dig into a particular cue from the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and dish about the Christmas carol medley of it all as well.First, we get into the nostalgic synths with "It's Christmas All Over the World". Played during the end credits, the mid-tempo song set the stage for the emotions of Christmas, washing over the audience like a warm blanket. Written originally with Freddie Mercury in mind, the song eventually was recorded by Sheena Easton. Likewise, the film also features a track by Aled Jones of "The Snowman" fame.Mancini purposely chose to score and arrange the orchestra as traditionally as possible. Subsequently, his score evoked a sense of wistfulness and comfort, harking back to days of yore. According to an interview with Randall D Larson for CinemaScore in 1987, Mancini stated:"One thing we had to satisfy was that you can't have picture about Christmas or Santa Claus and not touch on the traditional. I decided that it would be a good idea to get all of those numbers in one place, rather than spotting them here and there throughout the film. So on Santa's first flight I used them in a piece by itself, and it all worked out well because the montage was well conceived and it made sense. But from there on we went to original music.”Of course, the piece he was speaking of was "Christmas Rhapsody." The cue begins with a triumphant rendition of Deck the Halls before segueing into Joy to the World. A melodic and intimate version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing follows, succeeded by The 12 Days of Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, and O Tannenbaum. Finally, the cue ends with majesty and serenity with The First Noel and Silent Night.Tchaikovsky-esque instrumentation? Check. Catchy Santa Claus theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if a pop star is singing! So grab your celesta, join the orchestra, and play along to this episode all about the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and soundtrack!Behind the BellsFB: @BehindtheBellsIG: @behind_the_bells_podcastGive us a buzz!
