Pam is one of my favorite teachers from the Midwest who has stretched and deepened my spiritual understanding of horses.  In this interview, she does not disappoint!  If you are curious about why we are here and your purpose in life or connection to the earth and to animals, you will want to tune in to this conversation. We connected through a poster of Pam with her horse at The Festival of The Horse and Drum outside of Chicago many years ago, on the hottest day of the year.  Later, I was a speaker at her Horses and Hearts Retreat at Coach Horse Ranch, and became an Equine Certified Facilitator with Pam over the years.  She was, and still is one of the pioneers in the industry of Equine Assisted Coaching.I loved hearing that Black Beauty was also a part of her story, as it is for many, and her deep connection with her mother in her formative years with horses and even today in her work with others.  It was her mom who read Black Beauty in the tub and that inspired her to buy 3 horses for her daughters, and eventually they had a herd of 15.  Later in life, the idea of "Equine Assisted Mental Health... was not even a thing, and then it fell in to [Pam's} lap."  As she says of her first course of study at Prescott College,  "we learned on the ranch, not from a book..." Pam's explanation of Skin Memory and Bone Memory around the 10-15 minute mark is fascinating.  She has studied with many tribes and was eventually called to bring a tipi to her own land, which she has also learned to work with and listen to.   Around the 23 minute mark, she talks about The Eagle Story with a herd of yearlings, and what eagles and young horses whinnying may represent spiritually. In the second half of this interview, we consider how to reach people who may not understand or know that horses have a spiritual dimension to them.  Pam talks about learning to work withe her horses at Liberty and studying with the trainers behind Cavalia, and addressing the more masculine training methods that have been passed down with these new ways we are learning that are universal.  We also talk about how to support animals in crossing over the rainbow bridge, and where we live and why.Connect with Pam here:Website: https://equineaca.com/Youtube: Pam Kachelmeier - https://www.youtube.com/@PamKachelmeierEquineACA/featured (this only has 3 videos and 19 subs last upload was 7 years ago, but the link of this channel is in her website navigation)Youtube: Pamela Kachelmeier: https://www.youtube.com/@coachhorse1 (this has the most recent upload and more subs the link for this channel is found on her video vlog)Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/equineaca/ (found her fb group page as well)Business email: support@equineaca.comIn case no one has told you today, we want to wish you a Happy Valentine's Day and remind you that WE LOVE YOU, and so does an animal in your home, or nearby - perhaps today is your "GOTCHA DAY!!"   Reach out to me to join my "Get Fit with Your Dog (or other animal)" program and we can embark on a three month journey of getting healthy and healing with your pet today.  We also have a new HAAH community coming soon.... stay tuned to Horses, MountaJust says "buy the book on Amazon!"Support the showUpcoming events:The 2024 Adventure Paradox Digital Course HOLIDAY PRESALEConnect with me here:www.catcaldwellmyers.com@catcaldwellmyersThe Adventure Paradox Podcast Page (Fb)

This is part two of an afternoon's conversation with Taylor Culbert. Taylor is a PhD candidate in Theatre and Performance at the Graduate Center at the City University of New York. She is writing her dissertation on 17th century animal performances in Europe, looking specifically at how cultural narratives about animals shaped the ways that humans and animals responded to one another. In Part 1 we began with stag hunts and some surprising revelations about animal intelligence. It was a conversation with many interesting twists and turns. Taylor described the challenge of finding accounts from the 17th century about the relationship performers developed with the animals they worked with. I invited Dominique to share what she had observed in the artists and trainers who performed in the Cavalia shows. It's been a few years since that show was on tour, so Dominique began by describing the show. Cavalia is like Cirque du Soleil only with horses. In traditional circuses, horses are worked in the round always within reach of a long whip. In Cavalia they wanted to break away from this traditional image of superiority of humans over animals to portray a relationship built around friendship. Part 2 begins with Dominique sharing some stories from the show describing the relationship that developed between the artists and their equine performing partners. From there we circled back into the 17th century to Taylor's research and that brought us back around to the importance of positive reinforcement training and the role it plays in creating safety nets under horses.

When she isn't writing, Taylor works part-time training horses at a rescue in upstate NY. Taylor is enrolled in my on-line clinics so I've been getting to know her. I asked recently what her PhD dissertation is on and was so intrigued by her answer, I knew I wanted to learn more, so I invited her to join us for an afternoon's conversation. We began with stag hunts and some surprising revelations about animal intelligence. It's a conversation with interesting twists and turns. We enter a time warp between 17th century Europe and our current time which prompts Dominique to share stories about Cavalia, the theater company she co-founded that brought horses, acrobats, and other artists together in performance. Taylor mentions several references during our conversation. Below are the references: "Horse and Man in Early Modern England" by Peter Edwards "The Accommodated Animal" by Laurie Shannon (talks about "birds and beasts and fish" vs human/animal binary) "Birds and Other Creatures in Renaissance Literature" by Rebecca Ann Back (talks about animals having morality/emotions and the role that Descartes played - or didn't - in early modern understandings of animals) La Vénerie de Jacques Du Fouilloux This is a digital copy of an early edition of one of the hunting manuals that Taylor is writing about.

I spoke with Elizabeth Kaye McCall on Oct 28, 2021 and we had a conversation that took us to many places following where her intuition has lead her over the years with her life working with horses in the publishing, film and entertainment industry. The stories were amazing which inspires me to say Just Say Yes when it feels right and goes easy!BioBased in California, Elizabeth Kaye McCall is an author, journalist, and media consultant, specializing in the horse industry, travel, and entertainment. She worked as the original horse industry liaison for the equestrian spectacle Cavalia.  Her book The Tao of Horses: Exploring How Horses Guide Us on Our Spiritual Path shows how horses can transform the way we see the world, interact with our environment, and handle challenges. RAJALIKA SPEAK is a young adult tale about a royally-bred Arabian stallion gone bad, who found redemption when he learned to talk.   Elizabeth's passion for the horse-human bond can be found in numerous articles for wide-ranging outlets including Los Angeles Times, Hana Hou!, Hemispheres, Cowboys & Indians, Horse Illustrated, Arabian Horse Life, America's Horse, USA Weekend, The Hollywood Reporter, and more. I believe in the power of conversation. By listening, we open the door to learning and by communicating, we open the door to connection. I've spent most of my childhood and adult life within the horse community, whether that was A circuit hunter jumper shows, traveling as a groom for Cavalia's Odysseo, or currently running my own business as a body worker. Within my years of experience I have felt more emphases put on the differences and less on the commonalities. Stable connections the Podcast is my quest in flipping the conversation to focus more on the things we have in common as individuals, as well as a community. Stable connections offers a space for personal perspective and creates room for both the speaker and listener to share, learn, and process together. Some of the guests interviewed, I've known personally for years and others I've never met. At the end of each conversation I'm surprised and humbled by how much can be learned by simply listening and I am reminded that we are all here doing the best we can with the cards we are dealt. Community requires collaboration and participation. I invite you to be part of each episode by liking, commenting, and sharing on both Instagram and Facebook. Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast Episode 13 An Interview with Juliette Cimetiere @jchorsetraining on her Horsemanship Journey with Cavalia, Liberty, & Classical Dressage In this episode, I talk with the incredible Juliette from @jchorsetrianing.  Juliette is a trainer based out of Redmond Washington. Her training methods focus on building a balanced, relaxed, relationship between horse and rider. She teaches dressage as well as liberty work (focusing on building a connection on the ground, on and offline).  Juliette has over 18 years of experience riding training and showing horses in dressage, eventing, hunter jumpers, English and western performance. She has been teaching in the Pacific Northwest for 9 years, and has recently started teaching clinics locally and internationally, in British Columbia. Her training methods combine Natural Horsemanship, and dressage,  to create balance and harmony with horse and rider.  In this episode we discuss: Juliette's broad horsemanship journey including vaulting and clicker training, liberty, and classical dressage, to where she is today training a large variety of breeds. Juliette's experience working for CAVALIA (the incredible international “horse circus”)- including how the horses go travelling internationally. Her journey into liberty training through experimentation. What lead her to look into classical dressage We discuss issues with “modern” / competition dressage The key to enriching your horse's life.  Mistakes she see's horse people making and mistakes she's made in the past  The bits vs bites debate Positive vs Negative reinforcement debate Juliette also tells us who inspires her and what she is reading & learning about today  Plus how social media can be a good thing! AND so much more!!!   What I love about Juliette is that she emphasises the importance of experimentation in training, trusting your intuition, and tailoring your training to the individual horse.  I loved talking to Juliette and I hope you enjoy the interview!   Where to find out more about JC Horse Training: Website: www.jchorsetraining.com Instagram: @jchorsetraining Facebook: @jchorsetraining TikTok: @jchorsetraining YouTube: Oreoliberty [JC Horse Training]   Have questions or suggestions for future episodes? I’m back now and will be posting this new episode today, then I will do weekly playback of our most listened to episodes, then another new episode in a month then some more favourite episodes and then the following month I will get back into new weekly episodes. It’s time to dive back in and keep making the world a better place for horses! If you’d like to support the podcast and all the work that I do then you can! Just head on over to patreon.com/comealongfortheridepodcast and sign up. From as little as a cup of coffee a month, you can help me keep this podcast going. There are many tiers that you can choose from and if everyone who listens gave only $5 per month, it would make a massive positive difference to me. There is a tier in there for a small business subscription just like the one Peter Papp took up from Peter and the Herd, this is the one where your business gets a mention each week on the podcast. Peter works with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. Peter has had communication with my mare Gypsy, who is the mare with me in the podcast picture and he was spot on about everything so I can highly recommend his work personally. Click here to connect with Peter and the Herd. This weeks episode is with Dominique Day, Dominique has a business called Equiosity which she runs with Alexandra Kurland, who was one of the original people in the world to bring positive reinforcement training to the horse world. Together they do a podcast called Equiosity as well as online courses and webinars. Dominique was one of the creators of Cavalia and it’s a wonderful story to hear about how it all began, but it is certainly not the most interesting part of her story. She has had a wonderful progression from watching more traditional methods of horse training into positive reinforcement. Keeping strong with her gut feeling and knowing there must be a better way, you may very well be able to relate to this very closely. You are going to love this story as much as I did recording it.Dominique Day on FacebookEquiosity website where you will also find the Equiosity podcast.

Whoa Podcast Update 2018 Today I’ll be talking more about podcasting than horses, so if you tune out, I’ll understand. We wanted to get you a podcast update on what is happening at Whoa Podcast for 2018.  It’s our 6th year and, what started out as a conversation between Ranae and me about Downunder Horsemanship kept growing and growing.  I wanted it to be a place where regular folks could share their “equine experience” thus enhancing all of our knowledge. Not knowing anything about podcasting, I dove in head first.  I liked the technical aspects of producing the show.  The hard part was talking and interviewing.  My voice isn’t exactly made for radio as they say.  My interview style is stilted and a bit stiff.  Over the years these improved.  In 2017, I made it my goal to produce a show each and every week.  I succeeded. Producing a show week for the last year has been a daunting task.  Lining up guests, doing the research, scheduling, then editing takes a chunk of time.  Not to mention the writing and time on social media to promote the show.  Some of the shows weren’t as “groomed” as I would have liked them to be.  With just me as chief cook and bottle washer, sometimes quality suffered over the deadline to get a show published.  I tried to recruit other people into the task, but there’s no money and little fame for many podcasters.  But, don’t cry for me Argentina, I did and do it because I thoroughly enjoy the entire process. We've Been Around the World By offering a wide range of guests, talking about all aspects of horses, we covered a lot of ground.  We’ve interviewed veterinarians, farriers, dressage riders.  Through the podcast, Ranae and I have experienced Extreme Cowboy Racing, Working Equitation, Trail Trials, and much more. And, I’m proud that we were able to give the non-professional speakers a chance to share their horsemanship knowledge on the show.  Folks like Bernice Ende riding across the country and Dennis Dueker and his therapeutic riding ranch, and Alan Day talking about Mustangs. We took you along with us all over the place.  From the Ojai Valley Cowboy School, to a cutting lesson and out to Colorado to experience the Australian sport of Campdrafting.  You followed us along to the home of Doc Bar, the Horsemen’s Reunion, Cavalia, and the Vaquero Heritage Trainers Challenge.  We even took you to Mongolia and talked about what it would be like to ride one of those Mongolian horses through the countryside. Maybe the topics were too broad because we covered polocrosse with Paul Johnson, Western dressage with Jennifer Collman, roping with Denny Watkins, and working cow horse with legendary trainer Doug Williamson. When I began the podcast in 2012 I did not know much about horses.  I still don’t.  But, I know a lot more than I did 6 years ago.  If you’ve been listening, you do too.  It was through the podcast that I learned about a wild, privately managed herd of mustangs and got to start my own - and first - wild horse at the age of 61.  I survived the ordeal.  Actually, because of all I learned on the show, I accomplished the task without any bodily injury.  My pride got hurt a few times, but my bones remain intact. The Business of Podcasting My goal was to never ask for money from my listeners.  I had hoped some sponsor would come along and help.  Maybe there was an outside chance for a syndication deal.  But, I was doing the podcast for me and all the people who owned horses because they loved them, not necessarily because they knew a lot about them. I listen to many other podcasts.  When I heard RadioLab can spend $100,000 on a single episode, I was astonished.  Of course, they have an army of editors, writers, production assistants, and reporters for their show, the whoa podcast has me and Ranae.  Yes, I have expenses, whew, a hundred grand - I could do a lot with that!  We started a Patreon Page where listeners could help out with expenses if they chose. This part of the “business” of podcasting is my biggest weakness.  I’m simply uncomfortable asking for money and don’t like to do it.  Not that what we’ve produced isn’t valuable.  It has been and I’ve gotten so much out of it. To make money through advertising the podcast needed to get to 20,000 downloads a month.  While we came close a couple of times, we could not sustain those numbers to attract advertisers. All this is the long way around telling you that the podcast will slow down in 2018.  We have a couple of commitments and look forward to a few shows, but there will not be one every week.  The episodes that have tickled my creative fancy the most were the two with old-time buckaroo, Bill Mooney and the story Bobby Kerr and Tom Hagwood had to tell.  They weren’t the most downloaded episodes, put preserving those stories, presenting them to you so you can share them, has made them very fun to produce.  I’m working on another project to find stories - perhaps in a shorter format - to bring to you in the future.  We’ll see if I can make that happen. Use the Archives In the meantime, the old episodes will still be available, all 175 of them.  You can find them at WhoaPodcast dot com.  We hope you’ll stay in touch, too.  If you subscribe to one of the services, you’ll get a notification if or when we produce another episode.  I want to personally thank you for sharing this journey with us, supporting the show through all the growing pains.  Ranae and I hope you got something valuable out of it.  We know we did.  If there is one underlying theme to our show, it’s been to follow your dream - no matter what it is - wherever it goes.  If you can’t see the whole path, go as far as you can and from there you’ll learn which direction to turn next.  Thanks again for listening and sharing this podcast with your friends and riding buddies.  Until next time, Go have some fun with your horses. Cavalia Odysseo Orange County Preview Cavalia Odysseo has arrived in Irvine, California.  We missed the Cavalia performance when it was in Southern California 9 years ago so when the publicist for Cavalia Odysseo invited us to media day and a preview of the show, Ranae and I jumped at the chance.  The 125' Big Top was set up in an open field in Irvine in Orange County.  The show had taken this open field and transformed it into a state-of-the-art facility.  Stables for 65 horses plus all the feed, pellets and bedding, a kitchen that prepares 600 meals a day, plus the gift shop, food concessions, and stage which includes a 3 story "hill" the horses make their grand entrance. We got to check out the grounds and meet the horses and trainers and grooms.  Everyone at Cavalia Odysseo is proud of the work they do and very welcoming to guests.  The patiently answered all our questions and showed us where the horses warm up and how some of the backstage mechanisms operated. An Intimate Performance Four or five days later the place was ready for a performance.  We got front seats in a truncated but very exciting show.  There were gymnasts, urban stilts, and horses, lots of horses.  An amazing performance of liberty using nine horses.  Yes NINE horses.  No whips or crops or anything other than hand signals and voice commands.  This was the highlight of the show until, near the end of the performance, the flood the stage and create a lake.  For the next 10 minutes we watch a high level dressage performance.  Horse and rider were one.  There were even flying lead changes through the water. If you live in the Southern California area, you won't want to miss Cavalia Odysseo.  Tickets are affordable and the show is so fabulous you will be talking about it for months.  You can find out more at the Cavalia Odysseo website. Interested in Helping the Show? It takes a lot of time an money to put on the podcast.  I've been willingly footing the bill on both for four years now.  My equipment is wearing out.  My travel budget is shrinking.  If yo want to help, there is a simple way to do it.  I've partnered with Patreon.  You can contribute any amount.  Anything you would care to send along would be greatly appreciate.  Thanks. About Us Welcome to the Whoa Podcast about Horses and Horsemanship.   I am your host  John Harrer.  Along with my wife, Ranae, each week on the show we talk about some aspect of owning a horse.  It could be feeding or supplementation.  It could be bits and bridles, tack, or cowboy boots.  We cover training problems, or competing in shows.  We talk to farriers and horse chiropractors.  We talk about movies, books and magazine articles.  And, we travel to places we think you would like to take your horse.   That’s what the Whoa Podcast is all about.
