Send us a textThe Marla Hanson Story is a dramatic retelling of a real-life tragedy. The film follows Marla Hanson, a young and ambitious model who moves to New York City to pursue her career. She rents an apartment from Steve Roth, a makeup artist with whom she initially forms a friendship. However, when Marla rebuffs his unwanted romantic advances, Roth's interest turns dark and obsessive.Consumed by rejection and jealousy, Roth arranges for two men to attack Marla. An ambush that leaves her face slashed with a razor permanently scarring her physically and emotionally. The film depicts her traumatic recovery, her courageous testimony in court, and the emotional toll of being re-victimized during a brutal cross-examination. When a white actor was recently announced to replace Darren Criss in Maybe Happy Ending, it sparked a fresh wave of debate over racial casting on Broadway. For Asian Americans like playwright David Henry Hwang and actor B.D. Wong, it felt like déjà vu, echoing a controversy they had spoken out against more than 30 years ago with Miss Saigon. That blockbuster musical became the center of a storm back in 1990 when Jonathan Pryce was chosen to reprise his Eurasian character from the London production when it transferred to Broadway. This decision ignited protests, ultimatums, and the first major reckoning with yellowface in American theater. In this episode, we look back at Miss Saigon, the clash between producer Cameron Mackintosh and Actors' Equity, and how that moment set the stage for Hwang's satirical play Face Value—and continues to reverberate today. --- Click here for a transcript and list of all resources used. Send us a textWhat version of yourself do you bring to work? To family gatherings? To your closest relationships? For many of us, these questions reveal uncomfortable truths about the different masks we wear throughout our lives. We don't put on these masks with malicious intent. They emerge from our deepest fears—fear of rejection, fear of inadequacy, fear that our authentic selves simply won't be enough. But what begins as self-protection gradually transforms into self-imprisonment. The exhaustion of juggling different personas, remembering which version of yourself you've shown to whom, and constantly monitoring your own behavior creates a crushing weight that few can sustain. The most revealing insight comes when we examine what bothers us in others. That colleague whose arrogance drives you crazy? That friend whose neediness feels suffocating? These triggers often reflect disowned aspects of ourselves—mirrors we'd rather not look into. Taking personal responsibility means asking the harder question: "What's my part in this dynamic?" The reflection may be uncomfortable, but it's where true growth begins.Freedom arrives when we commit to authenticity. One face. One truth. Just you. People intuitively sense incongruence between what you say and who you truly are, even if they can't articulate exactly what feels "off." Consistency builds trust far more effectively than perfection ever could. This week, try having just one honest conversation—with your spouse, your boss, or perhaps most importantly, with yourself. Take off just one mask and notice how much easier it becomes to breathe. Episode 170 Tom Brose of Confront After trying to dig in on the Chubby Fresh episode and not getting deep enough, we were pointed towards Tom Brose, who would eventually connect with and bring many of the great 80's Revelation Bands and more to the area. Confront was a band started by kids in high school and were invested in the straight edge bands that were growing in popularity. Having a direct line of traffic as a major stop for most touring bands, starting Confront gave Tom, Steve Murad (Mean Steve later of OLC) and others like Outface - Charlie Garriga of Civ, Derrick Green of Sepultura and later Tony Erba and Face Value ample opportunities to play with a host of out of town bands. We go deep in Cleveland hardcore from as early as Tom could recall and we walk our way up to the 1st Integrity 7" , which soon after Tom moved to DC. Tom's story is a classic and his ability to recollect details from the past allows the story to fully develop in the conversation. www.darkempire.bigcartel.com/product/pre-sale-confront-our-fight-87-90 www.instagram.com/theclevostyle www.instagram.com/crossfitdc www.instagram.com/jiujitsudc

Frank Aum, a senior expert on Northeast Asia at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), joins the podcast to talk about a recent event the institute hosted which focused on past efforts at Korean peace, as well as a retrospective he wrote on the 70th anniversary of the 1954 Geneva Peace Conference for USIP.  He also discusses why he believes the United States and South Korea's prioritization of denuclearization above all else needs to change to fit the new reality the region faces and how Washington should adjust its policy now that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced he has given up on the goal of reunification with South Korea. Frank Aum oversees the U.S. Institute of Peace's work on Northeast Asia and focuses on ways to strengthen diplomacy to reduce tensions and enhance peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. From 2010 to 2017, he worked at the Department of Defense, including as special counsel to the Army General Counsel, special assistant to the assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, and senior adviser on North Korea in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
